I was hoping for the metal case version to hit Best Buy again... oh well. The art book better be worth it.

Even the artwork for the regular version is nice:

And the 8th manga volume finally hits on July 25th.
I'm confused. So Transworld is getting a cheaper one but it's missing the artbook?
I'm confused. So Transworld is getting a cheaper one but it's missing the artbook?
Basically. Best Buy got the exact same deal for volume 1 (a metal case with two discs, but no Alucard figure; I think they sold this instead of the basic version).

Though the special edition with artbook is $37.49 at Amazon, so I'm not too mad about paying extra. I love the art style in Hellsing, so it's worth it for me.

What gundam series should I like at? I have seen gundam seed, and gundam seed destiny and gundam wing. Any other gundam series I might enjoy?

Also, dont you think how it is kind of ridiculous in gundam wing a single gundam can kill 50 zaku's while in a different series it takes so much time to kill a few zaku's and other mechs.

Well not sure how much you know about Gundam, so I'll start with some basics.

There are two main types of Gundam series. Universal Century and Alternate Universe. UC Gundam is the original, and all takes place in the same timeline. And almost all of them can be traced back to the One Year War which took place in 0079, and is told in the original "Mobile Suit Gundam." A lot of them have the year in their title. Such as "Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket." The UC series focus on war itself, and how it affects people. The main UC series are as follows in order of their place in the timeline:

Mobile Suit Gundam
8th MS Team
Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket
Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory
Zeta Gundam
ZZ Gundam
Char's Counterattack
Gundam F91
V Gundam

Now all the series you've listed that you've seen are AU shows. They don't have anything to do with UC, and for the most part with each other. Therefore many of them lack the realism found in the UC timeline. As you mentioned, in many AU shows a single suit will wipe out hundreds of other suits, whereas in a UC show a single suit defeating more than 5 in a single battle is an accomplishment (I believe Amuro holds the record for most suits destroyed in a battle in a UC show. It's around 20 I believe).

I'll be honest, not a fan of AU Gundam. So I'd higly advise you check out some UC stuff. Preferably you're going to want to start with Mobile Suit Gundam. It's really the basis of the UC timeline. Almost everything else that happens is a ripple caused by the One Year War. Plus the rivalry between Amuro and Char is second to none.

I can easily recommend anything from the UC list with the exception of 0083 (the most AU of them. Also Kou Uraki is the worst mobile suit pilot in the history of Gundam. He makes Fa Yuiri look like a fucking Newtype), and Gundam F91 because it was never finished. Zeta Gundam especially is a treat. Sits in my top 5 anime of all time. Nice and depressing. About 95% of the main cast is killed off. That's what I like to see.

Cool thanks, ill try to check out those OU gundam shows youve talked about, also do you know which one of those series has the best artistic style?

G-Gundam and the original series with Amarao and Char were the only ones I semi-enjoyed, and I HATE giant robot anime.

I remember loving the limited amount of what I saw of 8th MS Team. The animation was great and I liked how the story centered on the regular soldiers.

I liked 8th MS Team the first couple times I saw it... though when I finally bought the DVDs, I remember being bored to the point where I couldn't even finish it.

Unrelated: The conclusion of FMP TSR was fantastic... and that Tessa OVA -- very cool. Definitely a worthwhile bonus feature.

I loved 8th MS Team. It was nice to see the OYW from that prespective. I love Newtypes as much as the next guy, but they do have a tendency to dominate the plot. I also liked the love story aspect of it.

I asked 4chan's mecha board (the hugest Gundam nerds I know of) once whether there were any great Gundam pilots that got buy only on skill (i.e. no special MS, no genetic hax.) Turns out there were only, like, two in the entire history of Gundam that did.

I debate that a lot with various people, and it is a good point. It also depends on what one considers great. For example, Yazan was an excellent pilot who even gave Kamille (possibly the best pilot in Gundam history) a run for his money, and he wasn't a Newtype. Yazan is an exception though.

There are a lot of Oldtype pilots who are really good. Emma Sheen, Shiro Amada, The Black Tristars, Jerid Messa and many others. But yeah, if you talk about the best of the best they're going to be the ones with that extra edge. Even then you still need skill. All the Newtype powers in the world can't help you if you have no skill (see Quess).

One of the few comedies I actually like. This and Jubei-chan anyway. Speaking of which, still need to see Jubei-chan 2...

Anyway, I went out on a limb and ordered the FMP! boxset. Finished the first two DVDs, and my opinion of it is definitely higher than my initial one. Though it's still not in the "great" category. Hopefully it improves.

I picked up a few DVDs today...

Street Fighter Alpha: The Movie
Sakura Wars: The Movie
Karas: The Prophecy

Also, I finished the first volume of Azumanga. Friggin' awesome show. Gonna star the second volume tonight.
Also, my Harhui box + first volume is shipping!
Ditto. Happened yesterday, and it's already in Cincy, so I should have it Tuesday or Wednesday. If not for Memorial Day, I could maybe have gotten it a day early.

EDIT: How much did you get Azumanga for? I've been meaning to pick it up cheap. I think Right Stuf had a decent price.

So what's so great about Haruhi? Everyone seems to be saying ZOMG ITS THE GREAT but I have no idea what it's about or why I should consider buying it.

I'll let someone else field that one since I'm apparently no good at explaining it. I tried to get a friend to watch the fansubs, but he was very disinterested. Keep in mind this friend has absolutely no taste regarding nearly everything, but he was at least open to the series for about ten minutes.

I got it for $50 from rodeojones903 here on CAG. It was the regular set, not the thinpak. I hate ADV's stripped down thinpaks.

Chacrana, Haruhi is about a bunch of different things. A crazy ass girl, the usual school fare, the universe, magic, even love. It defies a singular description. The characters are quite endearing IMO.

Haruhi is dope just for this: (might be spoiler)

Depends on the commentary. The commentary on the Boogiepop DVDs is excellent. They talk about the show and discuss various plot points. While the one for the Eva movies was disappointing. I don't like commentaries where they just chat, not even discussing the show itself.

I like it when it is a mixture of the two. Chat and humour mixed with comments about the show work great for me.

Haruhi came out today and no one's posting about it?!

Got the box + DVD in the mail. Pretty decent box with lots of movement and such. Doors open, drawers come out. It's nifty. The extras are kinda lame, but I'm in it for the box mostly.

DVD itself has TONS of extras on it. It's got three or four of the (A)SOS brigade episodes and bunch of TV specials along with the standard clean opening and ending.

Disappointed by the lack of a 5.1 Japanese track though. They will probably put it on the bonus DVDs coming out in the next two limited sets.

Video quality is superb. Looks just as good as the 720p RAWs that were floating around.

I haven't decided if I like the dub yet. I think Freeman is an excellent choice for Kyon, and he plays his part well... but... he isn't Kyon. Same with all the rest of them. While they may be good VAs and sound similar to the originals, they simply aren't the originals. Having watched the fansubs half-a-dozen times, I'm almost too familiar with how they all sound, so they dub just sounds weird, even if they are trying very hard to match that level of performance.

Like I said, I'm fine with Freeman. Bosch even sounds decent. I guess my problems are with the female leads, specifically Lee. She just isn't Hirano. The other two sound like their Japanese counterparts, but Sheh in particular sounds like she's really forcing that squeaky voice out.

Keep in mind I've only watched the first two episodes, so my opinion could drastically change, but so far, Japanese > English dub, but the dub isn't bad by any means.

I need to pick up the Haruhi box sometime.

But today, I was happy to receive Yu Yu Hakusho Collection 5. Watched it for the better part of afternoon and I finally got to see the end of the
Toguro fight
. What a good show.

Apart from that though... still waiting for that damn Hellsing Ultimate Vol. 2 LE to ship. Jan Valentine, your profanity is so close, yet so far.

Just two more weeks. You'll survive.

On another note, the packaging for the unedited Afro Samurai was the first time I've ever seen a magnetic case for DVD's.

I just went to the post office on my lunch break and my Haruhi LE box was waiting for me. I can't wait to play it tonight!

I want Afro Samurai too. I never heard of a magnetic case either.

I have an anime related question and thought this might be the spot for an answer. Would anyone know if or where I could find an EVA poster with the NERV logo on it similar to the design on the Perfect Collection boxset? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I looked on Rightstuf and estarland and neither had anything.

I watched my Haruhi DVD last night! I think the English voice actors were perfectly cast. Espisode 00 makes it hard to judge since they are fake acting beccause of that particular episode, but the other three episodes were outstanding.

I just noticed the special edition vol. 2 is coming out July 3rd. I'm glad that isn't too far away.

Honestly, after watching the last two episodes on the disc, the dub grew on me. I still think Wendee Lee is a little too loud, but otherwise, she started to fit to me during the last episode. Michelle Ruff really came through in the last one as well, during the beginning where she goes through all that Data Integration Thought Entity babble. Still completely digging Crispin Freeman. I especially loved Bosch's "I'm afraid of the consequences" line. The a.f.k. sub didn't get any response from me at that point, but Bosch made me laugh.

Now... about the subtitles...

WHAT THE HECK?! What happened? I'm not complaining about being too used to the a.f.k. translation (since it's probably true), but it seems that the guy who did the a.f.k. subbing and whatever company did the official release heard two different things. Either the a.f.k. dude took some huge liberties or whoever did this DVD purposefully wanted to make it significantly different from the a.f.k. subs. I mean, there are lots lines that have completely different meanings and some of the phrasing is totally unnatural. I'd say the dub and the a.f.k. sub are similar in most regards, but the official subtitles are way off from the two of them.

Again, I only watched the first two episodes (and I secretly prayed during the first one that they intentionally butchered the subs to make the crappiness of Haruhi's film stand out like a kung-fu flick with a bad translation, though that ended up not being the case), so my opinion is based on an incomplete viewing, but if this keeps up, I'm going to seriously considering going back to the fansubs for the Japanese audio and superior subtitles rather than watching this official piece of crap. I'll still get the rest of the DVDs for the dubs, however.

All that aside, I forgot to mention something in my pseudo-review. They've added new scenes. Not a ton, but every episode has at least one new scene, and some have even more. They're nothing hugely special, but it's still cool that they've extended the episodes a bit.

Just ordered the first Gunbuster 2 DVD. I actually haven't seen the series yet, and hope it's even half as good as the original was. Granted Anno didn't direct it, but it was directed by Tsurumaki (FLCL) and that's really the next best thing.

It's an excellent show, you really should watch it. Good proof that they just don't make anime like they used to *sigh*

It's nice to know they went with the broadcast order instead of the Haruhi order. Now I wonder how they handled episode 12.

I'm going to add that to my "to buy" list. I traded away the VHS a long time ago.

Speaking of VHS, I was watching some of my Akira DVD and compared it to my Akira VHS (because I wanted to see the differences in the dubs). Holy crap, I take DVD for granted sometimes. Trying to watch the VHS was BRUTAL after looking at the gorgeous DVD.

I'm gonna have to figure out a way to get the a.f.k. sub onto the DVDs. The last two eps weren't as bad as the first two, but they were still considerably worse than the dub and a.f.k. translations.

Gawd, was it awesome. This is exactly why Naruto is the highlight of my Fridays. This one just blew me away. It had very cool scenes, and addressed some very important details. I think also think Kishimoto likes Kingdom Hearts 2.
Ok! Let's put everybody in stylish cloaks!
