gkleinman, founder of DVDTalk, will provide details at midnight tonight (6/16). I will update this topic as more information develops. Odds are that it is this weekend, but I don't know for certain. Sorry to jump the gun and post with so little information, but I know not everyone here reads DVDTalk, and I wanted to provide a heads-up.

Anyone interested in the sale should prepare their wishlist as soon as possible. DDD slows down considerably during these sales (at least, it has in the past), so it is best to have a list of what you want before it starts.

It is less a set and more a flimsy paper box holding the 4 dvds, identical to if you had bought them individually (but at a better price). The films themselves are indeed outstanding, funny, great swordplay engaging, as the case with older stuff though, sometimes you have to be in the right state to enjoy b&w, subtitled and mono.

I picked up Seven Samurai in last year's sale. Its one of the best movies I've seen. Subtitled, black and white, and 3 hours long, but still amazing. That set is a great deal.

Come on man, you know that the changes from the SNES to a N64 are no where near the changes of VHS to DVD. It's a really bad example, plus the damn dvd companies are already double diping us to death. Do you really think the changes from DVD to HD is going to be like VHS to DVD? Thats a bag example.

The home format is only as good as its source. So only the movies actually filmed in HD or Digital (like, say. Star Wars) are going to see a jump in quality. And, personally, i dont know if most consumers would notice.
 
You're forgetting that the jump in quality from VHS to DVD was also a matter of packaging quality. Other than scratched surfaces, I've never heard of a problem with DVDs. With VHS you had to worry about the tape getting stuck, dust, and with how cumbersome the casing was.

I have all but the Cunningham disc, because I got the other 2 at release and the store didn't carry Cunningham and I'm lazy, heh. But, the Gondry and Jonze discs are works of art. In case you didn't know, wave 2 has been announced: http://www.directorslabel.com/
 
Seems like a lot of stuff is starting to go out of stock and stay out of stock. Finally got permition to pick up the Big O 2 Complete Collection and Jib Jab DVD, but they're both out of stock. Most of the stuff that was going out of stock in the early days came right back in. Hopefully the same will happen for these two.

That's the same thing I'm wondering... I mean I'm not even getting the best picture out of my dvd's yet (I don't have an hdtv to use progressive scan)

DVD has tons of advantages over VHS (all of the stuff already mentioned, indexed scenes, special features, sweet packaging, portability, zooming, high quality frame by frame, etc.) I just don't see how hd-dvd or blu-ray can make a substantial improvement on normal dvds. Also, We wouldn't have many more multi-disc sets because of increased storage space, is that an advantage?.

I'm really excited about wave 2, but I'm not sure if I am going to buy it at launch or wait for another box set. I like the extra disc they're throwing in with the current box set, so we'll have to see how impulsive I get when they come out. As soon as I receive the set, I'll be getting rid of my extra Chris Cunningham dvd, in case you might be interested.

$674.06 was the total after the 20% discount. Before the discount it was $842.58.

Ouch. I still have DVDs in their shrinkwrap from the last sale too. Where will I keep them all? Something is wrong with me... :(

I know the feeling. I've already got several DVD sets piled up on a bookcase in my computer room because the three cabinets we have in the living room are all full. Didn't stop me from loading up with another $344.96 worth on this sale. If there were any way at all I could afford it, there would be another $400 worth or so, but I just don't have the money right now. So my wishlist for the next sale around Thanksgiving is already getting long.

I picked up the WWE DVD on the Road Warriors for $10.82 after discount, a lot better than the $24.99 price that I seen at the Best Buy in Phoenix.

Thanks for the head's up Guessed. Was finally able to pick up The Incredible Hulk TV Series which retails in stores at $70 for $40 with free shipping after the coupon code DVDTALK. A perfect Father's Day present for myself, lol. :)

It can take a few days or a few weeks... and also, they don't always email you to tell you when your backordered item has shipped. It took a few extra days for me to get season 3 of Strangers with Candy last Christmas, but took3 weeks for the Seinfeld box set to arrive.
 
So here's my question:

If I place another order on items ONLY on backorder ... and I place it on 6/25, the discount will still work, right? If they're on backorder it'll probably take a week+ to get more in ... so maybe by the time they charge my credit card, it'll be after 7/1 (payday) and I'll still get the discount. Right?

The best value I saw was the only one that I bought -- Firefly season 1 for $23.91 after discount. Best Buy's price on it -- and I had thought about buying it there several times -- is $39.99. It's an excellent show, I need to watch it again before the movie comes out, and it was almost half BB's price. Can't beat that.
