Ah, I see. So how does one obtain incense?
You just find them in the environment in pokeballs like every other item. I wish I could tell you specifics but i haven't even found all the new incenses yet :bomb:

Though one of the ones I do have is the munchlax one
Anyone else collecting Unowns?
Yeah, and I'm going to have a double battle with the letter seal things. Like, spell out things to offend people.

I see. So I'm assuming they aren't used up?

Looking for a decent fire type other than a Chimchar line, any suggestions? Hopefully something I can catch with Diamond, or at least keep an eye out for on the GTS. =)
What's this about not being able to breed Munchlax? Of course you can breed Munchlax you just have to attach the proper incense to the mother snorlax. You had to do the same thing in R/S to get Wynauts and Azurils. The incenses are used to explain why these babies were not previously obtainable in the past few generations when breeding was available.
I do wish that Game Freak would stop obsessing over evolutionary continuity so we wouldn't have to have all of these more convuluted methods so as to explain why it was not possible in previous gens. Aipom is probably the worst offenders of this effect, apparantly he could never evolve earlier because he couldn't learn a move that hadn't been created yet

http://www.serebii.net/diamondpearl/breed.shtml breeding info
wow. I didn't know it was that in depth. thanks alot yertle :)

Houndoom is pretty solid. I don't really use him much anymore tho since I am going to go with the evolved form of sneasel for my dark type choice.

while I love houndoom, sneasel's evolved form would be the smarter battle choice seeing as how it has super physical attack.

Already a step ahead of you, though I never thought of doing a double battle. Unfortunately you can only attach 8 letters per ball.
Legendaries are a pain, but trust me on the fact you want to say your master ball for the runners
Diagla/Palkia is not that bad to catch, at least for me I did it with an Ultra Ball many times. I cannot verify how the other ones are, but the trio is only level 50, so that is not that bad. I am worried about the level 70 ones, and if I ever get the special promotional flute or whatever it is, there is a level 80 one. You better have the master ball for that!

As for the runners I am just going to mean look them.
The runners are Mesprit and Cresentlia or whatever it's called. They're runners because they run away after your first encounter and then will appear in random battle in the field where they'll automatically run unless you mean look/block them. A massive pain
This is the sole purpose I trained a Ghasly into a Haunter and then made him a Gengar.
congrats. it was pretty tough for me the first time through, but of course, I only had lvl 55's when I went through.
Did I just not train effectively or is your experience unique. When I went through I believe my levels were 40, 45, 50, 50 (this was just a steelix I raised 2 level from Victory Road), 52, 60

i only went through with 5 pokemon.

lvl 53 gastrodon
lvl 54 torterra
lvl 54 infernape
lvl 55 gengar
lvl 52 dialga

I'm really big on training though. I usually have like lvl 18 pokemon before I even fight the first gym leader.

I was thinking of doing that too. But I said screw it. Since Mespirit always maintained whatever conditions and dmg he had, there was no real need for Mean Look or Block. And all one needed to do was stay on the edge of town and walk back and forth until the "runners" ended up in the same spot as you. Catching Mespirit took only a matter of minutes this way.

The only trouble I'm having right now is catching Uxie. I paralyzed him/her and even got them down to the red zone with Super Fang. I even got them down to one pixel of health and even used super fang two more times after that to make sure they were at least in the single digits. I still can't catch it. I use Ultra Balls, although it's suggested to use dusk balls. But I want to use ultra since I caught the other two with them. Besides, Ultra Balls look cooler;) . I've gone through about two resets and 60 ultra balls and haven't come up with anything.

I agree the Ultra Balls look cool.

The thing which I did not hear you mention at all was giving them a status condition. Have them be paralyzed or asleep. These are both easy to do and will not hurt them any more. Freezing is also really good but no surefire way to do it.

I said paralyzed, but anyways, I did the same thing and just caught 'em. I dunno, the only diff this time was I had Azelf up while I caught it, whereas before I had mespirit. It's most likely luck, but wow, these legendary can make a person go through a lot of pokeballs before they're caught.

Sorry. Indeed you did. That is what I get for trying to read all the pages I missed!

These legendaries can and have made people go CRAZY!!! :bouncy:

Just so everybody knows the old thread got too big so it was closed. I have created a new thread that will serve the same purpose. Please use that one.

Reading these posts is reminding me--where the heck is my Official Guide? Too bad Nintendo uses the slowest possible shipping for their stuff... :p

Do not expect too much out of the guide aside from guiding you through the main quest. For some reason they do not even show the big island after the Elite 4 is defeated!

There is also no Pokedex in the back. This may be because it would be too big, but if that is the case they should have made it cheaper.

I have heard that the Prima guide is about the same.

Yup, and both nintendo and prima are releasing big super pokedex guides in may.

On the bright side though sites like Psypokes and Serebii have all the information one needs. Granted it takes longer but at least it is free. I of course, being a person who like everything in book form, will buy the Pokedex.

Does anybody know when the Pokedexes (what is the plural!?) are to be released in May?

I bought the Nintendo Guide and am just happy that it has route-by-route-by-cave-by-whatever info on what Pokemon are found where and when. Some people think it ruins the experience using a guide like that, but personally I get more enjoyment knowing what there is to catch and wherE I have to go, doing it and donig it well than running around having no idea what the fuck I'm doing, only to figure it out 30 mntues later. That doesn't give me a "ah, I did it by myself, I am so proud!" feeling, it just pisses me off.

That is how I am well. I play the games to have fun not to run around and get frustrated. I get plenty pissed off being attacked in caves (the higher level ones) every ten steps even with repel on, and I sure do not want to be in those any longer than I have to be. That also applies to water.

The Nintendo guide IMO does all of this well enough. I am still upset though that they do not show the islands that you can go to after the Elite 4. There is that big massive island along with some smaller ones. There are also new areas explorable on the main land. I guess I will be wandering around frustrated for a while.

Once I finish the game I suppose I'll turn to online guides for that. That's quite dumb that the guide only covers the main story and not places you go afterwords.

This thread is for n00b questions, right? (I'm like a bajillion posts behind, so sorry if these are repeat questions.) I've never played a Pokemon game before; are the DS games a good place to start? Am I missing anything from not playing any of the older ones?

Also, is it worth getting both versions (assuming I eventually find a good deal and have some expendable cash)? I like to collect games as well as play them, plus I've got a significant other I can use as an excuse for a second copy. Otherwise, we just share games. (Does it have multiple save slots?)

You can start with the GBA games. FireRed and LeafGreen are GBA remake of the Gameboy color versions of Red and Blue. And in my opinion they are much more simpler than the latter versions. And ruby and Saphire are pretty much the same thing of Diamond and Pearl except for the DS functionality and different pokemon(Fanboys can correct me if I'm wrong). But you're just fine starting where you are.

I'm in the same boat you are. It's good to have both version if you "gotta catch 'em all". I have diamond and my gf has pearl. And both games only have one save slot. This is the way Nintendo makes their money.
Ruby and Sapphire don't have a day and night system so that's a huge difference right there
that was a big thing. it would have been really helpful if it did too.

To be fair the save files on pokemon games are probably fairly large considering how much data is in the game and the sheer amount of time any file is probably going to ultimately receive, upwards in the hundreds are not unheard of

do you need to have a ds headset to talk online? or can you do the stupid thing and have the mic on the ds like 2 inches from your face?
To be fair the save files on pokemon games are probably fairly large considering how much data is in the game and the sheer amount of time any file is probably going to ultimately receive, upwards in the hundreds are not unheard of
yeah have you noticed that when you do a lot of things then save, it says "hold saving a lot of data" and it takes longer to save?

yay i've breeded my first pokemon: female combee :)

so once an egg pops out you can trade it without hatching right?

& yes - you can trade eggs w/o having it hatch first!

Well, I'm nearing the end of the game. So far It's a great game. My only gripe is how often wild pokemon jump out to get you. It seems pretty ridiculous. Although this would be ideal for people leveling up off of wild pokemon, it makes the main game a chore to get through. I swear they could've made 3 second background music and gotten away with it.

yeah, too many wild pokemon does get kinda annoying.

OK, how come Palkia was easy to catch over and over with Ultra Balls but those three Psychic Pokemon are giving me so much trouble. I am facing Azelf as I type and as of right now have thrown 28 Dusk Balls, 6 Ultra Balls, and 1 Poke Ball just for kicks. Lets see how it ends. Curses! Make that another Ultra Ball.

Repel works in most areas quite nicely.

I have a question...a guy gave me an egg near the city w/ the third gym. I was wondering what pokemon this is and how many steps it takes for it to hatch.
Where exactly is this egg? I've been looking and I don't know exactly where...
you can catch them at the pokemon mansion when the owner says he's seen one, or you can the egg at the hearthrome city gate. and they take roughly 10,240 steps to hatch.

Dialga/Palkia have a catch rate of 30 while the three psychic pokemon have a catchrate of 3. Pretty crazy.

yeah. I've also noticed that palkia and dialga are by far more easier to catch than any other legendary ever.
