Diamond; Pearl; Platinum 1-B (General Discussion; Strategies, Metagame, etc.)
Definitely some funny and true parts about that.

I think it is a bit too harsh on the game not doing much new though. I for one like it to be most of the same each time because that is why I play Pokemon, for the things it does best.
QFT!!!
Wow, that is quite a lot of reading to do at once, especially since forum posts get crazy at times. The only reason I read every page when I get behind is to make sure that (A) I get all the friend codes and (B) that any other issues with the threads are addressed. I also do read them for my own enjoyment though as well! :)
i read the thread so i don't get yelled at for asking something that was already talked about
whew finally finished reading this whole thread. and i'm not going to be able to get online much either, since i'm going to japan saturday. probably another 400 posts before i get back
I feel your pain about not going to be online much. I'm heading to Germany for six weeks sunday afternoon and the DS will be staying home. My DS will be so lonely, but its ac adaptor isn't designed up for european voltages and I don't want to buy a step-down transformer.

It's a shame Darkrai will likely be frowned upon for competitive use. His ability and move set makes for a pretty unique annoyer. Of course the Japanesse give away one is too powerful with both the Dragon legendary attacks. I'd really like to try a Dark Void, Nightmare, WoW, Dark Pulse or similar Darkrai.
so I know I'm double posting, but I think this deserves a separate post.

So, I was just walking around in victory road today fighting wild pokemon and training my wifi battle team like usual when I decided to check out my alakazam's stats and see where I was in comparison to another alakazam I have of the same level and I notice that somehow he contracted pokerus! and then I looked at the rest of my team and noticed it spread to all of them too! and then I remembered I had been walking around and fighting with some of my other pokemon and they all got it too. Wow, I didn't know it spread that fast and the best thing is, all my wifi battle team has pokerus which is really going to help out in EV training and getting them ready for battle faster. and on top of that, more than half of all my legendary pokemon that I've acquired from all of the pokemon games now have pokerus.
Move fast with training, pokerus only lasts a couple days at most. If you can't, make sure all your pokerus pokemon are in the box before midnight.

^pokerus effect lasts forever once a poke is infected but it can only infect others in a day so u only need 1 infected poke in a box to infect others
^pokerus effect lasts forever once a poke is infected but it can only infect others in a day so u only need 1 infected poke in a box to infect others
? THe pokerus doesn't spread in the box.

The only ways of spreading the pokerus is having the pokerus pokemon in question be the first poke in the party and battle. That and walking around. I think there's a third way, but I'm pretty sure pokerus doesn't spread in the box. Also the pokerus disappears almost randomly, but it is definitely affected by walking and battling with the infected pokemon in your party.

Generally, it's a good idea to keep one or two pokemon infected with the pokerus to be designated pokerus spreaders.

i ment by the box thing that it wont lose the status of being able to infect others in a box and take it out when u want to infect new pokes >< lol

well so far everyone in my party has lost their infectious nature of it, but fortunately I also have about 30 abra's and all 30+ of my legendary pokemon in the boxes all still have the contaigious aspects of pokerus.

So, I'm thinking of getting this game, but which version do you guys like more and recommend after playing and owning these pokemon games for awhile? Diamond or Pearl??

lol ok so there is no difference? Haven't played a pokemon game on console since the first one for GBA, and I didnt even own that one either.
lol ok so there is no difference? Haven't played a pokemon game on console since the first one for GBA, and I didnt even own that one either.
Just the Pokemon that you can capture in the wild. For the ones that are in the version you didn't get, you can get them easily by trading. People here are generally nice and would be glad to help you get the Pokemon you want. Oh, and the Pokemon on the cover art are also exclusive to that version.

aaah ok cool. Well think I'll go Pearl then... I like that dude on the cover more than the 4 legged dog one :D

Think I'm lacking a wall/tank type, but how does this team look? Most of it is all copied movesets, so credit due where needed. =P

if you get the metagross to learn magnet rise, it becomes impervious to ground moves, thus making it have virtually no real weakness.
if you get the metagross to learn magnet rise, it becomes impervious to ground moves, thus making it have virtually no real weakness.
Well Metagross' only weaknesses are Ground and Fire, so if you have Magnet Rise (like myself ;)) you just have to worry about Fire, which is usually easy to fight on most wellrounded teams.
Magnet Rise in place of Explosion probably then?
that would be the best because earthquake gets rid of fire weakness, and magnet rise eliminates ground weakness, then metagross has no weakness!

Just saw this over on gamefaqs, seems to be legit.

It's a trick to see the nature of an unhatched poke before it hatches. Should be able to save some time.

To do this trick you must have your order set up in a certain way, remember that numerically your party is set up like this:

1....2
3....4
5....6

The egg you wish to check the nature of MUST follow a hatched pokemon. So this trick can't be done if the egg is in the first slot. So anyway heres how it's done....

Go onto any PC and enter the deposit pokemon screen.

In the lower left hand side of the top screen you should see a box that scrolls information in a pattern like this:

Item the pokemon is holding |
The pokemon's type(s) |
The pokemon's nature |
The pokemon's ability V
and then it repeats...

Anyway USUALLY when you have your cursor over an egg that box blanks out, however this trick momentarily confuses that box into showing for an egg! Hence revealing the nature or ability (so long as the scroll is on that information).

From the deposit box RELEASE the pokemon directly before the egg (so you know, don't save if it's worth anything). After the "bye-bye" message the box will MOMENTARILY flare the stats of the egg before correcting itself and blanking out. If you have the right stats up then you can learn the nature or ability of the egg WITHOUT THE WALKING.

Somethings to note:

I haven't gotten this trick to work with simple depositing, but it might be possible.
The box will continue to cycle EVEN WHEN IT'S NOT VISIBLE. So learn how long it stays on each stat before moving on, and time your presses accordingly.

Ok guys... I've been reading through the Pokemon threads, and I'm confused about a lot of the things everyon is mentioning, simply because I haven't played a lot of Pokemon in the past... so let me ask one question - is there anything in the game I can screw up that I should know about? For instance, in crystal, I screwed up the egg I was given and got a crummy pokemon from it... but my saves were too far in to do anything about the mistake.

So, are there any things like that in this game that I need to be on the lookout for? I like to learn by doing to some extent, because I don't really get a lot out of trying to read the posts here or the strat guide (it seems like everything is in some foreign language!)... but I also don't want to miss out on game content.

Thanks :D

Couldn't you always screw up in Pokemon say if you write over good moves a pokemon gets with a crappy HM one or something? (If I remember the one game i played years ago right lol). Unless you can get those back or something...

well If you teach it an HM move you don't want it to learn, you could always go to the move deleter and get it removed.

Theres a move deleter person that will remove any move, even HMs and TMs. And then theres another person who will let your Poke relearn any move it once had, I think any move on its move list, even if you 'gave up' on it and never learned it. You need a heartscale to do this tho, they can be mined in the underground. So between those two people, you should be able to get your Poke setup with the moves you want.

P.S. Completely unrelated, but I had to share this. Last night I had the hardest time ever catching a Poke. A Chansey popped up and I hadnt captured one yet. I tried a quick ball, no luck. Then I beat it down into the red and tried a reg ball, then the better balls, nothing! Chansey kept healing, so I kept beating it down and trying to capture it. It broke out of dusk balls (it was outside, but nightime) and everything else I tried. The battle went on so long I started using timer balls, no luck. I finally got it , i forget which type of ball did the trick, but no lie I used about 10-12 balls to catch the effin Chansey. So I nicknamed him 'Houdini' =D

nice catch puffa. I know how hard those chanseys are to catch. eevee's are the exact same way. I get them down to 1 hp with false swipe, then I have to throw atleast 6 or 7 ultra/dusk balls before they stay in the ball. Now the only thing harder than that is actually getting it to evolve into blissey

I got this item for him to hold, a something bell, that makes him happy, thats how he evolves right?

Let me ask you, when a poke breaks out of capture attempt, does your chance to catch it increase with the next ball? I know each ball type has its own % chance, but I wonder if multiple misses wear the Poke down so I eventually get him?

I don't know about that. sometimes I think it does, and other times I think it doesn't. for example, when I've fought legendaries, the catch rate increased as I threw more balls, but when I was catching eevee's in the garden, one time I had 2 rolls then it broke out and about the next 3 balls after that is just rolled onced then broke out.

Thanks for the inpurt, guys... this game is so friggin addicting. I just got to the underground bit... I'm sure it will only get worse now!!

Has anyone purchased one of the new pokedexes? I'm wondering which is better, Nintendo or Prima? I have an Amazon GC and thought I'd bite, but don't know which to get.

personally, whatever you need help on or need to know about pokemon, there are two sites that I use and alot of other CAG's on here use as well. one is www.serebii.net, they have an uber amount of information on everything that is pokemon, with full detailed pokedexes on every one of the 493 pokemon. the other site I go to for help is www.mycheats.com. search for pokemon diamond/pearl there and it brings up a super guide which is basically a full blown strategy guide with picture and videos up on the internet for free!

I caught I Poke I had never seen before last night. It was in the Safari marsh place, and the Poke was called a 'Carnivine' or something similar. Grass type that looks like a Venus Flytrap.

I have 7 badges right now, and Im just working my thru Mt. Coronet looking for that Team Galactic jerk. I want to hurry up and finish the main story so I can start building a team for online battle. Ive been reading up a little on breeding and EV training, etc... all the cool endgame stuff.

thanks for the websites

wow. I'm currently going through the battle tower right now and I'm using mismagius, dragonite and heracross. and wow. I built my mismagius to be an annoyer, and I'm not only trapping and causing status ailements like crazy, but I'm sweeping everybody with it. dang.

SL4IN (and everybody)... how do you recommend sahping a team, I'm curious. It sounds like you have one pokemon that focuses on status sorts of attacks... so the rest of your pokemon just use physical/special attacks? I never know what moves my pokemon should keep when leveling them up, and I'm not very good with the status moves, so especially never know what to do with those... they don't seem like they do much for me right now... but I'm thinking status attacks will probably end up becoming really important the higher up I go, and then I'll be screwed ;P

Thanks for the links you mentioned. I'd been to serebii, but not the other! I think I might still like to pick up a pokedex, though... for some reason it just seems like it;s easer for me to refer to a book?

My final team is looking to be like this:
Physical Sweeper (Weavile)
Special Sweeper (Gardevoir)
Physical Tank? (Rhyperior or Donphan)
Special Tank (Blissey)
Annoyer (Crobat)
Wall (LifeStealing Venasaur)

Most teams seem to have 2 tanks and 2-3 sweepers, whether they be physical/special or mixed, then 1-2 support pokes such as an annoyer or baton passer or something similar.

I need help picking an electric pokemon for my team. I'm torn between working up a Pikachu and evolving it. Or I could use my thunderstone on my Eevee and use Jolteon. Is there a better electric type that I'm missing? Any helpful tips on this?

I saw them both at stores, and would definitely recommend the Prima one over the Nintendo one. Though the Nintendo one has a little continuation of what to do past the Elite 4. Still Pokedex wise I preferred how the Prima one was made. Not only that, the Nintendo one doesn't include moves learned by breeding. The Prima guide has moves learned, TM & HMs, and bred moves just like at Serebii.

So, I thought it's nice to have, instead of being near your comp all the time.

Electivire is pretty much overall rape. Fast and strong to bat.

Jolteon is good too if you feel like Baton passing agility and want a very fast special sweeper of sorts.

Hmm, thanks... I think my team probably sucks =)) I haven;t gottend own all the strategy of this yet. Right now, I'm playing with...

Prinplup (Metal Claw, Bubble Beam, Brine, and... umm... his original attack)
Staravia (Wing Attack, Double Team, Quick Attack, and... growl? leer?)
Luxio (Spark, Bite, Charge, and Roar)
Roselia (Giga Drain, Poison Spikes, Worry Seed, and - growth, maybe)
Ponyta (not sure what moves she has... L20, though)
Onix (Bind, Harden, Screech, and Rock Throw)

I don't want this to be one of those "r8 my teamz!" posts, but I would like some input :p I'm only at Hearthome city (the first time) right now, so I'm still early on. I haven't used any HM's or TM's yet either... I'm afraid I'll screw that up. Though I did teach cut and rock smash to some storage type pokes I don't use otherwise.

I spent Friday night (hey, I'm married :p) grinding to get all of the above to 20+... Prinplup is about L36, and Luxio and Roselia are mid 25ish. I'm not so sure about (well, any of them, but...) Onix... I couldn't decide if I should hold onto him or Geodude, and decided to go with him. I also have a L20 Craindos I dug up in the underground, though it's not a two typer, obviously.

I'm just not sure if I should be focusing a lot of the current pokemon I have, or if I should just be using them until I get further and catch better ones... does later in the game necessarily = better?

I still need to find a good ghost/psychic too... any recommendations?

I don't necessarily need to the *greatest* ones... I just want to make sure I can make it all the way through the game!

I can't really provide any input for those pokemon because I don't know any good movesets for them. But if you are looking to build a new team, it's good to grasp general concepts about team making. This link here is an excellent short concise guide to the general roles in pokemon teams. Though they only give examples of older pokemon, the same concepts still apply to the PD generation. And much of the links provided by the OP in the first post are very good in supplementing the more advanced aspects of the game.

Well, what I can say is that Prinplup when evolved to Empoleon can play as a special wall support of sorts.

And as for ghost/psychic there's always Gengar (evolved from Gastly) and Alakazam (evolved from Abra). Gengar has a huge movepool (but most of the good ones come from TMs) and Alakazam is just a fast and strong special sweeper(attacker).

And on a general note, it's usually best to have one move per type. Say Prinplup has watergun and bubblebeam, that'd be a little redundant. So it'd be better to take out the weaker of the two and put another move in that either causes status ailments or generates a different type damage.
