I just started Fallout 3 and have this version of Oblivion on order. So between those I'll be good until Skyrim comes out. Looks like the summer sun will not touch me this year.

^That's basically what got deleted earlier. Is that off topic?
And then there was me wishing you farewell, and pictures, and jokes. And I warned you about FO: NV's eventual GotY ruining you even further.

But best to not tempt the forum gods.

On-topic: I've never played any entries in Elder Scrolls before, will that affect my Oblivion experience? I know the 3rd game was Morrowind or something. Also, will the PS3 version have that Steam cloud stuff?

They are the mightiest of Gods. Holy in their virginity and striking fear into the hearts of reasonable people with their neackbeards. I KID!

On topic: No, you can pick up Oblivion and play without any worry of missing anything. They are different stories and whatnot. I wish we could play Oblivion together co-op, Bob. :bouncy:

Sounds like a blast. Could you imagine Skyrim with co-op?

Neckbeards unite! (Seriously, I love mine.) Damn, now I'm all excited for this release when I was more or less just curious about finally picking up this game earlier.
according to an ign review from 2007:
Dont want to start anything but I am seriously curious if anyone has any more recent info.

But despite the IGN article stating that the PS3 ver has a graphical upgrade, later reports state that the XBOX version recieved a Graphical update to bring it up to par with the PS3 version.

"Yes, there will be a graphics update. There will be a shader update as well as a draw distance update (same improvements added to the PS3). This will be no charge to the user."

Apparently this was done around the time Shivering Isles came out.

Now is this 100% accurate? I would imagine that if it is, then the updates would be on the GOTY discs already out.

What I want to know is whether the newer GOTY discs will have any other patches or improvements or are we just getting the same 100% exact copy of the original GOTY discs.

Well it will probably be the original copies. They really can't just add in new improvements without updating the previous goty release. So in other words, if they were to fix anything it would probably via patch which works on all GOTY editions, new or not. Now with that said the new GOTY edition could have a higher version of the game, meaning no patch needed and the other older GOTY editions would need to download it.

Regarding differences between PS3/360 versions.

I've played over 40 hours on both the PS3 and 360 versions of Oblivion and while there are differences, it's hard to pick one over another. My completely non-technical observation is this. Things look sharper on the 360. It makes the game look pretty sterile at times. The PS3 seems a bit fuzzier but it makes organic stuff look better. There are also fewer loading times on the PS3 version. Occasionally on 360 I'll be walking cross-country and the game will stop to load things. It only pops up when you're traveling quickly without doing things like picking herbs or poking around in above-ground ruins.

At the moment, I own the 360 GOTY version and I'll be getting this on PS3. I formerly owned the PS3 GOTY version and the vanilla 360 version.

Neither version looks great nowadays but it isn't due to laziness on the part of the developers, it's just that they were still new to programming 360/PS3 games in 2006.
Now with that said the new GOTY edition could have a higher version of the game, meaning no patch needed and the other older GOTY editions would need to download it.
Right exactly.

I would think that usually when the game hits GOTY status thats it for any patches. So I wouldnt expect this new release to have anything. But you never know. I'd rather have it all on disc already if possible. Especially since the original GOTY (360) is still sealed in my backlog.

Thats why I am thinking about the PS3 version since I havent started the game yet.

I know the IGN article claimed that the 360 ver had patches but I dont know if it meant the patches that supposedly were done to "bring it up to par" or if IGN made that statement before the patch came out.

I did read in a wiki that the PS3 would still have certain advantages exclusive to it, but didnt say exactly what. Given that the PS3 had shader and draw distance upgrades and that was it basically (graphics wise), if the patch resovled that on 360, I cant see what was meant...maybe faster loading times? If so, that must've been with the thinking back then that the 360 didnt let you install things on disc.

So all in all I am not sure if itd be worth swapping out my sealed goty 360 ver for the new goty PS3 release....

The PC version of this isn't even Steam enabled. And Steam PS3 support just came out a month ago for a grand total of one title.

Skyrim might if Valve can really sell it's usefulness, but nothing else right now uses it or has announced plans to use it.

Thanks for the comment on this.

Is there any specific reason though as to why your getting this again for the PS3 though?

It seems like you've been getting this release back and forth a lot so in your opinion, if you could only choose to get one specific release and thats it...which would you choose?

(regarding the ps3 ver....does it have access to DLC...or is that stuff xbox exclusive? Ive read that it had problems with the ability to get access to some of it...also as you guys have stated here about some kind of Vampire bug in the ps3 ver....is there a way to completely avoid that or what?)

DLC is all on the disc when i had the GOTY edition and from what i hear this will have the same disc so it should all work just fine. As soon as you install and load the game up you are able to access the DLC items.

AFAIK, you just gotta save often when you're at risk to getting infected. No way to completely avoid that other than caution and prior knowledge of vampirism risk. This is only for the PS3 version, though.

Edit: The PS3 version of the GotY contains the same DLC on disk as the 360 version of the GotY.

Actually the PS3 version GOTY doesn't have all the DLC that the 360 has. Yes, it has the big ones (Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine) but there are a variety of small dungeons, fortresses, and the ubiquitous horse armor that are not on the PS3 GOTY (and presumably not on this PS3 release).

I wound up selling off my PS3 GOTY version and reacquiring the 360 GOTY version because waaaaaay back in the day, I bought a bunch of those little DLC pieces (not the horse armor thank god) and I never got around to checking them out while I owned the 360 version. Now my main character lives in the fighter's stronghold and at some point I have a big DLC dungeon to go through. These things are not part of any of the DLC from the GOTY versions.

If I had to start all the way over right now, and assuming that neither of these 5th year anniversary versions have anything above and beyond Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles, I'd probably get the 360 version.

Here's why...
-The aforementioned little DLCs on Xbox Live. Yeah, they're not all that but I like to have the option available.
-Achievements (why not, I don't usually go out of my way to get them but I'm conditioned to like them popping up at this point)

ps3 didnt even get most of the dlc items tho, just knights of nine and shivering isles.
also i hope this gets trophy support and fixes the vampirism bug.
That would suck to trade in my original version for an upgrade solely for the case... but oh wells.

I'm really not liking the "$10 off Skyrim" advertisement on the slipcover. Does anybody know if it's a sticker or is it a non-removable part of the artwork? I cannot tell from the picture.

So the little DLCs on Xbox Live ARE included in the 360 GotY? I was aware of the little DLCs, I was unaware they were included for free in the GotY. Thanks for the heads-up, if so.

I'm gonna put my vote on them not really doing much for this release aside from re-packaging some old shit and selling it again. That said, I'll still get it since I don't own the game at this point. I'd shell out $30 for the GotY anyways.

I'm just going by the back of my sealed 360 copy and a faint recollection buzzing in my mind so you'll definitely want to double check on this, but I don't believe those smaller DLC are included in the GOTY version... they are definitely available for purchase on the marketplace for 360 (wheras you can't get them at all on PS3) but I don't believe they are included with the 360 version.

I too don't think the non-achievement earning DLC was part of GOTY, but I can't check the packaging on mine since I traded mine a while ago. I was unaware of their existence until this thread actually. I think it's just Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine. The other DLC never goes on sale which is lame. Are they any good though?

See, I knew I wasn't crazy. Guess I gotta re-edit the earlier post. Thanks to the last two posters for trying to clear that up.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that the little DLCs are included in the 360 GOTY. They aren't. That said, they went on sale at some point (2008?) and I bought some of them. Thus, one of the advantages of the 360 version is that (if you want) you can buy some more content than you can with the PS3 version. That said, the "exclusive" DLCs are pretty small. The only one that might take a few hours to get through is the dungeon one whose name I can't recall at the moment. (Mehrune's Razor - http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Mehrunes-Razor/00000000-0000-400c-80c0-0006425307d1 )

I wasn't aware they weren't on the PSN until you mentioned it. That might affect some buyers here, thank you.

That was already posted and it doesn't mean trophies. The disc is the same as the non trophy goty version and mgs4 said trophies on the case but doesn't have them.
Yay, the PS3 version is getting trophy support. Look in the Amazon page back artwork:

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/91h-5Ap6YzL._AA1500_.jpg

Knew I should have waited to play Oblivion. =D
I brought this find up earlier and we discussed how even if it says Trophies, there might not be trophies. MGS4 was the example given for this. If Trophies is your selling point, just wait on the confirmation after the game's released, there'll be plenty of leftover copies, I'm sure. But don't wait TOO long, Trophy support'll obviously make this rerelease sell like hotcakes.

Edit: Above poster beat me to it, damn.

Found a greatest hits PS3 copy of Oblivion at Target on clearance for $10, so I no longer have to consider whether to get this re-release for $30 with a map and some DLC.
Never played an elder scroll, so I'm sure the standard content will be more than enough for me. :D

Shivering Isles is actually better than the main game.
Shivering Isles is actually better than the main game.
I thought Shivering Isles was terrible. I still can't believe they released such a poor expansion to a great game.
I thought Shivering Isles was terrible. I still can't believe they released such a poor expansion to a great game.
I'm in the middle here, I didn't think it was terrible, but I didn't think it was better either. The main problem I did have with it though, was that there wasn't enough side-quests to do and what was there was kinda boring.

so i scored a pc goty version complete for $10 on craigs the other day and just watched 1 sell for $55 on ebay, is there any reason I shouldnt flip this now and get the steelbox version for pc? I have also installed this on my system so I have the expansions in there
Did this get moved up to 7/7/11 release date?
you mean moved back? I havent heard anything about it.
Any idea if the $10 off will work on Amazon or is it going to be B&M only?
It will likely be B&M only, as Amazon (or any online store that I know of) doesn't take paper coupons.
well originally it said 6/28/11
It still does on Amazon. Where are you seeing this new date? July 7th is a Thursday which is not when games typically release. Are you sure that's not just your Amazon shipping estimate?
now its saying 7/12/11

http://www.gamefaqs.com/xbox360/releases
That date at least makes sense, but it's Gamefaqs which isn't exactly the most reliable. Of course, a later date may explain why GS isn't taking pre-orders yet. It would also explain why Bethesda hasn't sent out a formal press release yet with a firm date. Maybe they are waiting for E3 next week.
According to the press release GameStop wouldn't be one of the retailers getting it.
Could you provide a link to the press release, I couldn't find it
According to the press release GameStop wouldn't be one of the retailers getting it.
I can't find any formal press release. All I see are repostings of the info from the website source (Nitrobeard) that formed the basis of the OP here and what's on Amazon's listing. It appears to me that no formal announcement has been made at all. If you have a link to the actual press release from Bethesda, please post it.

Is there a chance that a retailer might have a reduced price for this the week it comes out?

Or do special versions like this generally just go for MSRP?
Is there a chance that a retailer might have a reduced price for this the week it comes out?

The game is $30 and extremely limited in quantity. The only retailer that would do any kind of special is Kmart, and it's not very likely.

There is no firm proof this is extremely limited. There is also no reason that other retailers won't have a deal. Look at what TRU did with the Mario collectors edition.

I know it's probably been said, but I didn't want to read through 11 pages of text. Oblivion just wasn't as fun for me as Morrowind. I think I just enjoyed the setting a lot more, I was more immersed in the gameplay and I think the plot was more interesting. Oblivion had some parts that I did find more enjoyable but overall I was underwhelmed with it. Maybe I'll give it a shot again, who knows. I'm hoping Skyrim turns out to be better than Oblivion.
