I was looking forward to that Capcom all stars gave however it got canned...it looked interesting, it was a 3d fighter with characters such as Chun-Li, Mike Haggar (Final Fight), Ryu, Alex (Street Fighter III), Batsu (Rival Schools), Charlie, Hiryu (Strider).

According to gamespot it was canceled because "The gameplay mechanics would have revolved around a five-button setup with two punch buttons, two kick buttons, and a side-step button for avoiding attacks. In addition basic attacks would have canceled each other out if executed at the same time."

Actually when you think about it Capcom All-Stars sounded like it was gonna turn out to be like Rival Schools. 2 punch, 2 kick, 1 side-step button, basic attacks cancel each other out. Exactly like rival schools.

Speaking about "schools" the school year starts today in south Fla. Ha ha kids go back to school, I love being an adult, cause I'm just gonna sit around playing Groove on Fight and MegaTen Nocturne while most people below the age of 18 have their worst day of the year. I love life!!!
In regards to Xiaoyu's b+1 and b+2 quick chops... you can use them as an interrupter during certain poke strings... also by holding ~B you can go into BT state(also known as RND[Raindance] stance) and mixup from there. It's not something to be abused but it's good to know it's range and what it can beat out.

Also for DoA... it will not be an official EVO game. Sure people are welcome to play it on Thursday while we are setting up etc. But it will not have an official tournament.

And I'm fully aware of the DoA scene and talk to some of the best players in the nation for the game. A lot of people agree that the game lacks depth and could be improved upon. Let's just hope there is some sort of dramatic change in DoA4 that competitive gamers can appreciate.

The main thing I dislike about DoA isn't the game itself, but the mentality of the game's creator... Itagaki. A coworker of mine went to a private party during E3 with Itagaki and some moderators from DoACentral... and all they did was talk trash about how lame Tekken was... Now I know everyone is entitled to his opinion... but I hate it when people talk trash about a game because of false accusations and lack of knowledge of the real level the game is at.

That's real talk.
thanks for the help with Xiaoyu. it seems like a good strat to get her out of a tight spot. I'll have to read more about it at TZ.

That E3 doacentral interview with itagaki was kind of weird. From what I could tell from the thread, it sounded like the doacentral guys were fighting more with each other than talking with him  the general maturity level of that site makes it hard to hang around...for one thing, there's a lot of fan service kids there and it's just a hassle to weed through it all. It is a start, but DoA4 will make or break whether the game will ever have a long term serious scene.

that is a shame....they have so many new franchises to pull characters from-- they should just make a 2-D fighter with an improved M vs. C 2 engine and put in Dante, Viewtiful Joe, someone from Killer 7, maybe someone from RE4, as well as the new girl in CFE etc.

Xiaoyu is tough to learn. As you may have guessed, the downward poke is a counter move and is used to stop quick chain hits. Since you're a DOA guy, I'm sure you're familiar with counters. Give Asuka a try. Her b+1+3 and b+2+4 are extremely useful. Always remember to buffer a button. Jin also has the same counter but it's not nearly as effective. Nina also has a counter (I think it's done the same way) but it's not a staple move of hers, her other moves are just better to use.

yeah, Asuka is the only other character that I can hang with in T5 because of her counters and modular combos. To tell ya the truth, I kinda prefer Xiaoyus reversals that set the other guy up for a combo, rather than the insta-damage counters.

I've gotta find a T5 machine(and scene) around here.

Aw the fighter threads have gone down the shitter. All this talk about DOA and Tekken makes my penis soft.

Yeah, let's get it back on track with some VF talk. ;)

Jin's b+1+3 and b+2+4 are way better than a regular reversal. Asuka's reversal can be re-reversed upon as can Nina's unless she goes into the qcf+1+2 multi throw(from reversing left punches)...

Jin's is simple parry which can lead to some good damage. You're way safer whiffing a Jin parry than a regular reversal. Especially in a game where everyone pretty much has 50% juggles.
Yeah, let's get it back on track with some VF talk. ;)
...hmm.

ok, let's talk about more general of a subject: do you think the level of damage done to characters in a fighting game really plays a big part in how fun most fighters play (remember to factor in fast paced games, as sometimes less damage may be better, as well as how long fights tend to last)?

some notes:

Higher end damage games: Tekken series, Soul Calibur/Edge series, Marvel Vs Capcom, King of Fighters series, Samurai Showdown series... etc...

Lower end damage games: Marvel Vs Capcom 2, Virtua Fighter series... etc...

(I know I am not accurate with the above games, but I am generalizing)

One other thing I miss about fighters: Where have all the fun sensless fighters gone? Last one that probably was ever released and didn't need any depth to be fun (even though it did have depth) was Project Justice... games like Waku Waku 7 (did I get the name right?) and Mattrimelee (still looking for this for MAME, please help!) as well as Rival Schools seem to have vanished. I miss them.

I will once I go pick up another $5 copy of Evolution from BB. Best $5 game ever? I think so.

I think they should definately decrease the damage handed out in Soul Calibur. Most matches in arcade mode last less than 10-15 seconds for me.

personally I like the short matches in Soul Calibur. It makes the whole fight alot more intense and very fast paced. If it realyl bothers you so muc, the options allow you to raise the amoutn of health available.

I bought a copy of VF4 just so I could put my copy of evo in its case. (I have no other GH/PH/PC titles).

Then when you open the case the red label on the disc laughs at you.

Yeah, that little bastard. :bomb:

If I didn't use Brad I'd just get rid of Evo and keep the original.

Kage is your friend.
Kage is your friend.
No, The Shredder is my mortal enemy. One of my friends always used Kage while I usually used Pai or Jacky, so naturally I never spent much time with him myself.

I should though, he's a good character. I just didn't like Kage vs. Kage matches, especially against someone with far more experience.

I love the short matches, as it makes it more necessary to get the first attack and keep it going. As long as the game is fun, I could care less about the damage that is done.
It kinda make sense for shorter matches in a weapon based fighter IMO.
it would also make sense to have instant kills since weapons of those types would kill you like nothing, but then again the game would be no fun then.
ANybody liked the slowed-down version of Marvel Super heroes for ps1?
No. Slow = retarded. Turbo 2 all the way.

That's why VF is so great. ;)

Speaking of which I played for a little while today ... started a new quest thing in evo, played 31 matches (just enough to get up to 1st Dan) before I got bored and quit.

Most of the fun sensless fighters were 2D, and as we all know 2D fighters are a rare breed these days. Back in the day 2D fighters were a dime a dozen (mostly thanks to SNK) and you were bound to find a few diamonds in the coal mines that were just fun for everyone.

These days it seems like companies are trying to target the more hardcore fighter fans (the ones who are into the tournament scene and high-level play) instead of trying to draw in new audiences (the ones who are just looking to have a good time), thus alienating the latter demographic.

could it be argued that MK Deception is a "fun senseless fighter?" The game was easily broken by "hardcore" players, but it's very enjoyable for "low-level" play. You've got great characters with those multi-level stages. Cheap deathtrap wins are awesome. And the whole FINISH HIM... oh no you don't... HARA-KIRI!!! HA HA I SHOWED YOU!!! factor is good fun.

To me MK Deception (along with DOA) are guilty pleasures. They have thier moments, but they seem to geared torwards the "casual" gamer more than the "hardcore" gamer.

And Rolento was talking earlier about "sensless fighters" I have another great one to add to the list. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. I was playing this last night with a couple friends and we had alot of fun. Definatly one of the most overlooked fighters. It's kinda in the middle of MVC2 and Alpha 3. Not too over-the-top but not too old-school. Plus a bunch of intresting characters. Too bad the manga isn't out over here, I'd really like to read the story.

Unless it's set up with huge, multi-tiered arenas and lots of defensive moves, like Bushido Blade. Matches can go on forever in that game.

Anyone here ever play Kengo for the PS2? It was a sword fighting game like Bushido Blade, and I absolutely loved it. It was slow, methodical, and required a lot of strategy. Reviews weren't too hot, though. Controls took some getting used to.

EDIT: And I went and asked the shoryuken.com forum about what the best arcade stick is, and they're all really down on the X-Arcade stick. They seem to favor the Hori Real Arcade Pro. They also say it's easily modable. Any opinions?

Hori Real Arcade Pro. Without a doubt hands down.

I'm getting a shipment of a lot of them by next week. I'm gonna be selling it for a little less than retail if anyone here is interested.

I really think we should have a big gathering (anybody lives in SF & Bay area?). I want to challenge anybody who can play Capcom Vs SNk 2.

hey, thanks for reminding me to pick this game up! I've been meaning to for awhile but always forget. I think it's made by the same team as bushido blade, and is kind of a spiritual sequel. Can't wait to try it out. It's only $6 at Ebgames too.

Yeah, I have yet to play that game, but I am totally intrigued by it. The amount of snsless stuff in that game is a huge appeal for me.

as for MK and DOA, i have to agree about them being guilty pleasures. I have a blast playing them, but no where near other fighters.

One game I think that can turn off casual gamers from fighitng games is Darkstalkers, since there is alot of depth to that game... I would love to keep playing that series, but all the games seem to feel the same after a while.

I hope some company notknown for fighters comes out with a good title soon. We really need new stuff.

I played the original Darkstalkers alot on my PSX and I own Chronicles for Dreamcast, but like you said, it feels the same through the entire series. To me it's a very boring 2D fighter that I can't play for more than 5 minutes before I start to fall asleep. Also the character design seems to "light" and "happy" for a series based on old-school monsters. I would prefer the game to be more dark and serious.
I played MvC 2 and Beats of Rage with my sister Sunday night. Good times.
i would join in also... if you lived near me.

yo Rodimus... PM me about getting together sometime. I only have a week till college starts... I may set something up with the zaibatsu guys too if it works at all. remember though, i lack good transportation. Public transportation all the way :(

Just played more Beats of Rage a bit ago with her. We got to the final boss Rugal (or whatever they renamed him as) before we died. :bomb:

::is from Maryland and goes to school in North Carolina::

Oh well, there's always Kaillera and Xbox Live (when I get a subscription that is)

Oh yea, regarding the HRAP... the original one has Sanwa buttons and a Seimetsu stick... I'm also going to be getting a few of the IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND HRAP Special Addition which is the red one with both Sanwa sticks/buttons. I'll keep you guys updated when I get back from EVO.

went to an arcade tonight to try out Tekken 5-- got completely WRECKED. I don't think I won a single round! I usually kick the crap out of my friends cause I know a few strats, but NOBODY took any of that shit from me  Can't wait to play some more later this week.

also, it's cool that you can plug in a PS2 controller, cause I suck with the stick. that's a great idea and all fighting games should do it!
we all can dream on about a CAG tournament... oh well
yeah, i'm in chicago and will be going to school around here or madison, WI....

I still have no idea who plays live in this thread.
You play VF4, what do you need a stick for.
Well, no one really needs a stick, but I'd like one. And I do play other games.
