what I wouldn't give for Windjammers on PS2 though...
ggaaaayzzzz

do you think SNK (U.S) is hesitating to bring their good fighters here because of the state of the mainstream appeal of fighters?

most people still see fighting games as "nostalgic", something they played at one point of their life and moved on. how many times have I heard someone say to me, "3S/MVC2, I remember playing that in _____". WTF? I just played it yesterday.

I'm sure no one bought KOF 02'/KOF 03', SVC Chaos, KOF Neowave, or how many Metal Slug iterations on X amount of consoles. SNK gave us KOF 00-03 on PS2, which are FAR better than all the AOF games combined. No one seemed to be supporting them then, why would we deserve to get good SNK games here in the U.S. How many people in the DS forums declined to buy Card Fighters DS, simply because it didn't play like the NGPC one. A lot of the non-fighting game thread dudes who are "buying to support" are downright hypocritical.

If SNK took a note from the Atlus/Nippon Ichi playbook, they'd probably be better off.

They should pack in a bunch of fan service extras, give good pre-order bonuses (even a Terry Bogard hat would be nice at this point  ), give the games nice packaging with lots of unlockable stuff, and advertise the collection all over game sites. maybe even bring over obscure Japanese games that no one has heard of. that would get people excited.

No one bought those games, that's why every store that ever stocked them had to clearance them to get them the fuck out of there, so you're right on that.

I'd go so far as to say everything SNK has ever put out in the US flopped.

No one bought Card Fighters DS because it had a game ending glitch, shitty translation, and a half ass presentation. The fact it didn't play like the old one is the least of their concerns.

SNK gave us games like KoF 02 / 03 at $40 a pop... no one, except for the few hardcore fans out there, is going to buy a "game that looks like an SNES game" (I heard that a few times) for the cost of something that was designed for the graphics of the PS2. This is why most people just kind of glossed over them, the high price tag and most people don't know shit about SNK's back catalog - it was never as popular as SF or MK here in the states and it still affects them to this day. Hell, even non gamers know what Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat are.

I gave up on SNK bringing their shit out to the US, so I just import them... I also gave up because SNK usually halfasses their ports to the US as well.

At least now SNK finally realized most people aren't going to pay $40 for their games, but I guess they realized it too late. I honestly just think they are wasting their money on a US branch to begin with.

I like that idea the best. They should release them in low print quantities so that they don't get burned. People that have no interest in fighting games will buy them because they're "rare" and they might even get some new blood into fighting games because of it.

EDIT -- Sammy should've done that with Guilty Gear #Reload on the Xbox. They printed out so many copies that many sat on store shelves for years. This gave the perception that the game was crap. For some reason, people equate a game being out of stock as it being a quality game. Disgaea wasn't the greatest SRPG but it was hard to come by and it come good reviews. People heard about this funny little game with exploding penguins but could never find it a couple weeks after release. Not saying that KOF or Guilty Gear add exploding demon penguins but their respective companies should seriously look into limited print runs.

I agree with both Roufuss and Apossum.

Apossum, do you think that strategy would work? Do you think that RPG fans are less picky than fighting game fans, or vice versa?

Roufuss, good points. You know I'm not bashing you for buying AOF, since we all know you are importing good fighting games :)

My problem comes with the finger pointing all the lurk CAG members and others are doing. So I want my fighting game collection full of quality and not quantity, I save $15 and all of a sudden I'm not supporting SNK/Playmore. I'm done with the days of buying shit because it's cheap.

Bringing up MK and SF was nice as well. When I used to work at TRU, people would come in and buy any MK game just because it was MK. The same went with a lot of people asking us if we had the SFA collection or copies of Alpha Anthology flying off our shelves for the first month+ it was out. I worked there for over 2 years and we only had 1 person buy a KOF game, and 1 couple ask about KOF, even then the couple got a Japanese PS2 and wondered what my favorites were.

I sound like a dick, but with the ability to import it's easier to not care anymore. I'm done with the days of relying on my favorite U.S companies to bring shit here to the U.S.

I do think the shitfest that is AOF Collection is the result of both the state of fighting games in the US and the whole "BAKA GAIJINS won't pay more than $20 for anything 2D." In fact, I think that second thing is the biggest factor. Consumers in the US simply won't pay much for something that looks old, and by typical consumer standards, even Guilty Gear XX looks old... so really, SNK probably doesn't see bringing over newer games as beneficial since they'd have to translate them (since that hasn't been done at all) and release them for barely any money.

Random OT, does anyone here watch Japanese Drama shows? I feel like such a wussy asking, but they're very entertaining for me... :)

This post has been brought to you by the council of MarkMan losing his manliness.

You mean like Soap Operas? Or movies? The only movie I have seen that might qualify is The Princess Blade.

Oh God.... Princess Blade. That was the one with no real ending, right? I'm not sure how I finished it but... wow. I do recall enjoying Versus though, but that's not quite a Japanese Drama.

Oh, more on topic: I picked up Senko no Rondo. Well... sorta. Play Asia has the game for $49.90 and I used a $5 off coupon, so I feel good about waiting not quite a week to save $15.

It's not in stock, but I'm sure it will be soon enough. It's on teh way though. West Side.

RPG fans love extras and are really in to fan art and OST's or any swag associated with a game. I think fighting game fans are similar in this respect--if the art of fighting collection had a box detailed with character art, an OST, an art booklet, a molestable Yuri figure, a silicone Yuri mouse pad, as well as lots of in game extras i.e. a REAL tribute to the series-- people would care more about it. I know I would be more intrigued and want to pick it up to support SNK. the game isn't better but there's that psychological thing. for example, SFAA wasn't that appealing to me but the extras, even though I never play them, made me want to get it on launch. I still only play SFA3, but I still like owning the whole game.

but the difference is that RPG fans are more into any RPG that comes out, where fighting game fans will have strong criticisms about a game if it isn't up to tournament standards. I think tournament quality can be forgotten if a game is really fun though. If it has lots of good supporting art and extras, people will like it more for that collectable aspect.

of course it isn't fool proof-- working designs were the masters of the "make your game look important and cool" trick and they're dead. but their games consistently sucked, so that's what happened there. SNK has much more to draw on. ;)

definitely gotta get in some online matches when you get it. I'm burnt out on 3S online right now.

Apossum, I think KOF 94' Rebout (PS2) was a step in the right direction. Didn't that set come with some limited/collectors items? I also remember there was another version of it that came with a Neo-Geo style PS2 pad.

I still desperately want that Neo Geo gamepad for PS2... it's thumbsitck reminds me so much of the thumbstick on NGPC... and that was probably the best non stick pad I have ever played a fighter on. 360s were easy as hell, all command inputs were like butter, and the clicking noise it made is a classic to me.

Regarding Japanese Drama shows... A couple years ago I watched Densha Otoko and ended up loving it... and I just recently watched Hana Yori Dango.... something about Japanese girls makes me want to plant seeds in Japan.... mmm....

The Densha Otoko one is pretty cool, has a lot of geeky/otaku references all over it...

AND!!

EVO WEST!!!!!!!!

densha otoko is awesome, but i thought the movie adaptation sucked. the drama had a cool tv special that had a cool ending that makes you beg for more.

I haven't heard of that other one. is it any good?

EVO west! I had such high hopes of going, but I've got a wedding on that very weekend in mexico city.

anyone think that the Final Fantasy PSP game will be a true fighter or a brawler?

why can't square resurrect eghriez!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! damn you! plus I loved the mishima tie in!

MM: Is the live action GTO show considered a drama, because I want to see that.

OT: Just watched Devil's Backbone... good movie. Mi es fantismo

note to Roufuss: Cardfighters actually plays damn good. The game feels alot the same once you put in a good amount of time. The reason why the gameplay sucked more than the original is all due to AI that dosn't give a shit about anything.

WITNESS THE POWER OF MUGEN!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey SFII fighting partners... About our discussion on kids...

Korn shirts.

Sorry I bailed, had to make a phone call. GG's to everyone.

i saw some of the first episode of hana yori dango, the japanese live action. it was alright, but not something i really found myself engrossed into. when my brothers went to the philippines a few years ago, they said it was kinda big... only it was the chinese adaptation called "meteor garden." and all the girls thought those f5 guys were like super hot. =P

densha otoko... i saw the 2ch posts and thought it was a cool story, but then i watched the first episode and i couldn't stand the terrible acting. i wanted to sock that otaku in the face everytime he fawned over that one chick.

i keep trying to get back into anime but i always get bored after the first few episodes. and then when i meet anime convention people, i get so mad at their stupidity that i feel ashamed to be an anime fan.

I can relate, except I barely watch animes intentionally. I'm super picky when it comes to what I watch, same goes for gaming. I can't feel like I'm wasting my time. Only full anime series I've stuck to were: Golden Boy (best damn anime period, plus best damn US voice acting period), Berserk (would be a great fighter), GTO, Robotech (original one)... and that's it. I've recently downloaded Desert Punk and been meaning to watch that. I also am 90% done with texhonilze and enjoy it, but need to finish.

but other than those, anime is losing my interest... plus I would rather be stabbed (preferably by Chac) then ever watch Naruto... please let it die!

I'm still waiting for the rise of cartoons in the style of Ashley Wood (ie. MGS: Digital Graphic Novel and MGS PO).

on that note: Project Justice has to become an anime someday... I'll probably do a quick piece of art sometime soon on my obsession with it.

To be honest, Hana Yori Dango didn't pick up for me until the 3rd episode of the first season... Same with Densha Otoko, it took me awhile to appreciate it... if I looked at the main girls of each show without watching the episodes I'd be like bleh... but as I watched and watched, man they grew on me...

And the GTO live action is awesome, if you loved the manga/anime I think you'd like it.... there are some drastic changes from the manga/anime storyline but overall it's entertaining....

Also I agree the Densha Otoko movie was lame, I don't like the manga/movie/novel or any of that, I prefer the TV Drama more...

I apologize for OT'n the OT Fighting Thread....

And while we're on the subject of Anime... I tend to stray from anime because I'm so lazy to sift through and watch a bunch of episodes, but at least with manga I can go at my own pace... I really wish they would rerelease Hokuto No Ken here... I'm glad they're releasing uncut editions of the original Dragon Ball Z though... :)

The only anime I've gotten into since the original Robotech was Gungrave. That was the last good show that G4 showed on Anime Unleashed.

As for Final Fantasy Dissidia, I'm thinking it's going to be a poorly done fighting game. It'll be incredibly broken and I'm guessing it'll be because guys like Squall and Tidus will incredibly powerful.

That pad is okay. I much prefer the PS2 Saturn pads. The above pad feels very fragile, I'm worried that it'll break if I use it too much.

i'm hoping that NCSX actually ships my copy of Accent Core tomorrow so that I have it for the weekend. I really wanna get back into the game.
Playing Guilty Gear Accent core. So far so good although what the hell happened to Baiken's voice. She sounds weird now
growth hormones?

Im Thinking FF dissidia will end up playing like a juiced up Ehrgeiz. Which for all intents and purposes would be awesome.

Anyone play Hokuto no ken?

I recently purchased it and originally I thought it was going to make me stop playing Melty blood, and just own my soul, but man is it a bit lackluster. I just wish that there were more characters and a little more fleshing for others. Oh and to answer your resolution question chacrana, Melty blood AC ver.b PC will allow you to change resolution, though I do not think it was a option in Re-act
I haven't put as much time into HnK as I'd like, but yeah, I've got it and have played it quite a bit. Shin FTW.
Same here. I've been sidetracked with the combo of GRAW2 and MVC2. I gotta learn how to play Juda and Mr. Heart better. I don't even know why I'm trying to play other stuff, come end of June KOFXI will own my soul.

I really don't mind the lack of a huge cast of characters in HnK. There are too many fighting games that have a ton of characters and you end up using maybe 3.

So we've got Final Fantasy Dissidia coming out sometime next year. What are the other major stateside releases for this year?

Virtua Fighter (360)
Tekken 6 (PS3) -- sometime at the end of this year?
Guilty Gear (PS2/Wii) -- Are we ever gonna get Slash or Accent Core stateside?
Neo Geo Battle Coliseum (360) -- Anyone seriously think this is gonna come out when it's still relevant?
Fatal Fury Special (360) -- I'll throw down 400 points but I'd think twice before spending 800.
Fatal Fury Battle Archives -- Stateside release sometime next year?

Anything else? Melty Blood? Rumble Fish?
. I don't even know why I'm trying to play other stuff, come end of June KOFXI will own my soul.

.
are you going to buy the PAL version?

Wow. Surprising. Perhaps we'll see it in 2009.

After some of SNKPUSA's fuck ups though, I'm not sure how much faith I have in them merely bringing something to the US.

ahhh nice, always love The Best editions. Im hoping to grab Naruto Shippuden Accel once it drops in price.

on to depascal's list isnt there supposed to be a new 3d Capcom fighting game coming out? the name eludes me but there is a preview in the japan section of the new play magazine
Nope. Japanese version drops to $34 at the end of June, so I'm going to pick up that.

KOFXI coming the U.S? (courtesy of the SRK boards)

If it indeed is coming out in the future, EVERYONE better buy it....or stop yer bitchin'
That would be hot fire if it came out for $15 - $20 too, like AoF and I assume Fatal Fury (which is 2007 depascal, not next year ;) )

I'll get it but they better not charge $50 for them when they finally do release. If Fatal Fury Battle Archives comes in at $15-$20, I'll be all over it like Chacrana on some transvestite hookers. KOF XI would be sweet at $20-$30 but I won't be surprised to see it at $40.

I wonder if AOF is selling well enough to justify bringing KOF XI out here... I mean, am I the only person who remembers KOF 94 Rebout? That game was just around the corner and it got canned for no apparent reason... though it was probably lackluster sales of Samsho V and everything else SNK's put out over the last 5 years. So yeah, it'd be good if KOF XI came out in the US so people could stop trying to convince themselves that they like AOF Collection, but my faith in SNKPUSA is nearly nonexistant.
