Final Fantasy XIII-2 Announced. Coming out 2011 in Japan

I'll get it. From what I've read, it sounds like they're going to pick up where they left off (i.e. when the game got fun). At least it's not another disaster like FFX-2 lol.

So another information release http://www.siliconera.com/2011/09/08/historia-crux-is-final-fantasy-xiii-2s-home-menu-according-to-director-toriyama/ with some interesting screen shots. What do people think of the time travel idea? I think it could be interesting, although I admit to never having played chrono trigger, which a lot of people seem to be comparing it to.

The one criticism of XIII I unequivocally agree with is that it took to long for them to end the "tutorial" stage of combat.

I'm cautiously optimistic about the time travel portion. I never played FFXIII and hoped it wouldn't be too necessary to appreciate XII-2, but now it's almost a requirement for anything to make sense from a character perspective.

Looks great so far!
First of all, it would cost tons of money, whether they re-used everything or not. And we all know they would have to revamp the battle system and other parts of the game considering the game is a decade old -- it has aged. A shiny new FFVII for PS3, battle for battle and line for line wouldn't be that impressive of an RPG. Spending years on something like that is a colossal waste of creative resource, not even just money.

Plus it would look bad, releasing an already made game with the full HD treatment when they could be pushing new ideas.
We're talking about a company that NEEDS to string along a few hits in order to regain consumer trust. The past few years have been nothing but shit. FFXIII is a shining example of that. Yes it sold, but only because of the name. Overall, one of the worst FF games I've ever played.

With a remake of FFVII, they have most of the resources in the early stages already done. They'll need to to create a lot of new assets, but the foundation is already there, something most games spend quite a bit of time on. If I needed a guaranteed hit (3+ million copies sold), I'd remake FFVII in a heartbeat, for both PS3 and 360. It's worth the effort and resources and not many games get a second chance to improve upon their initial release, especially not a decade. A development team should be so luck to work on a game and fine-tune it.

I imagine a quick trip to the Final Fantasy Wiki article on XIII could give you a pretty good grounding in the character stories if you don't want to put the time into playing the game right now. On the other hand you can buy the game for less than $20 new now and could doubtless get it for a little less used. It had its flaws but it is hard to argue that FFXIII wasn't worth that.

I'm not so sure a FFVII remake would be all that well received once people got their hands on it. Look at the oftentimes contradictory criticism of FFXII, for example I've heard some people say the paradigm shift system was the only redeeming element of the game where as other people say they could have enjoyed the game if only it didn't have the paradigm system. If they remade FFVII everyone would be excited in advance and then once they played it half the people would be complaining about every itty bitty change while the rest would be complaining that they didn't change enough to make it worth paying for again.

Personally, I am extremely excited for this sequel. I wholeheartedly enjoyed FFXIII. It had its flaws, but overall, I thought the game was fantastic. Everything I've seen about XIII-2 looks great and I'm looking forward to playing it. I'm sure after this fall however my backlog will be huge, so I likely won't get around to it until next summer or so.

Amazing to see such a polarizing game. I'll give XIII a whirl and see if I enjoy the game enough to work through the whole thing. Otherwise, I'll read the Wiki like you suggest.

I just bought it for $20 off Amazon.

Besides, if I do complete the whole game, it'll take me 1-2 months and by then the fall releases should have a price drop or two.

Square Enix could give a shit less about what some gaming community boards say about their products. Every FF released since gaming forums have become so mainstream have been met with large amounts of negative feedback. Everyone is still on their FF nostalgia ride they started with FF[Insert number here], and most of these hardcore fans are the ones typing on forums, no? I heard the same forum rage when FF12 came out, oh and remember X-2? Forums hated those games and both were huge money makers. Why do you bring up your personal opinion on a game's quality when we're strictly talking business decisions here? The only game that was a major bomb for Square recently was FFXIV, not surprising because it did actually suck. Why didn't all the FF zombies buy that game because of the name? Hmmmmmmm

Square does not care about us, whether you enjoyed their latest product or not. They care about feedback from the market. XIII was a success, millions out there want more of it. If it really is the worst game ever made, then how about we place a bet on how many units it will push with the sequel? Logically no one will want that shit, right? People bought it because of the name, right? They won't fall for the same trick twice!

But they fell for X-2, they fell for XII, and they came back for more with XIII. The brainwash is so strong! I hate these games and RAWWWWR BRING ME FFVII IT WAS SO GOOD.

Or perhaps it's more reasonable to conclude that Square Enix is still putting out great software, just games directed at new audiences?

Every FF is polarizing. Unless you're talking to a bunch of 25+ year olds about FFVI. Then it's just a circle jerk.

FFIV (FFII) is also, pretty much universally praised from what I've read.

Still -- FFVI is my favorite RPG ever (with Chrono Trigger and Suikoden II being a very close second and third, respectively).

I'd include Valkyria Chronicles in that list but it's more SRPG than straight RPG.

Just a brief note for those interested in importing the system from Japan. I put the details in my trade list, but to summarize...

Since I'm here in Japan and have my site, I do package forwarding for a really low price.
Basically, the system would be cost, shipping and my fee which is around $30 or so only. Considering most JP exclusive PS3 systems reach about $200 markup right after release, I think it's fair to offer my services here. ;)

Fan subtitled version of the new trailer is on youtube http://youtu.be/VaJvsW3ez-4. I look forward to an official English version but we see Hope & Snow. We get a name for the purple guy, Kaias. Also I read on one message board that one of the commands in the battle section translates to "leader change" indicating we will be able to change the party leader in battle.
Day one buy.
I like your thinking!

And having a Chocobo in your party is icing on an already tasty looking cake.
Personally, I found Snow's hair more distracting. Time to put the hat back on.
You're not the only one, a bunch of comments I've seen(me including) are about Snow's hair. I wonder if they're going to even show Sazh

On the monster adding I want to add a cactur to my team(if that's possible)
Lol, the day we pay for DLC hats is the day I mourn the death of the FF franchise.
Well I didn't mean it quite literally, but I've seen several people suggest they'd like a DLC option to pick the XIII costumes for the repeat characters and making the new costumes look wildly different would make those more marketable. I really don't think this is unusual with JRPGs. Doesn't the PS3 version of Tales of Vesperia have a bunch of downloadable costumes (I own this one on the XBOX so I'm not sure). Personally, I see it the same way I see the auto battle feature. If it bothers you don't use it. The fact that it exists for someone else who wants it doesn't hurt me any.

Apparent death scenes for multiple characters was a little more than I was expecting. Didn't bother me but considering that I saw people complaining that some of the trailers for XIII-2 included part of the final movie sequence from XIII I thought I'd mention it.

People may have seen it elsewhere, but preorder bonuses have been announced. Best Buy is the only physical item, a hardcover copy of Final Fantasy XIII: Episode -i. Gamestop and Amazon are both downloadable items, a costume for Serah and a Boss Battle/recruitable Omega.

I think if Amazon stacks this with Amazon credit I just might bite on my first preorder in years. On the other hand if they don't I think I'll just watch for a sale and trust that the Omega download will be available as regular DLC.
Yeah I wonder if it will truly be retailer-exclusive DLC... If not, and the book looks nice enough, I'll go with Best Buy.
It's looking like the book will be the only collectible and everything else is just paid DLC early.

Who's getting the Chinese version here (Japanese voices with English subtitles)? I'm just wondering where's the best place you can pre-order it.

I was thinking of Play-Asia, but I'm worried about their shipping since I heard it could take weeks.

So, anybody else aside from me who's interested in getting the Chinese version? Curious to see where you'll be preordering it.

Heyo, Ill be importing the AUS/Uk Crystal version as it looks to sweet to pass up.
And we dont know if we will get that version here in the states. Comes with a lot of cool swag including the steelbook and the Best Buy pre order book.

Ill be getting an american copy which will most likely be the Amazon for the Omega DLC
Famitsu gave XIII a 39/40, soooo....
While that might be slightly higher than was warranted there is a lot of exaggeration over how bad the game is. It had some flaws, primarily the excessively long "tutorial" period. Most of the other things people complain about were legitimate game design decisions even if they weren't to your taste. For example the linearity made a lot of sense from a story standpoint. Quite frankly, a lot more sense story wise than "Weapons have been released, Meteor is falling, let's go breed some chocobos to race at the casino." People complain about the auto battle making it boring but frankly if you were to lazy to change the default position of the cursor it is your own fault you were bored. I hardly used it once I had more than 2 commands to pick between.

Personally, I have to grade any game that I liked enough to get 1000 gamerscore and then platinum as a solid A.

Getting the LE at Amazon, hopefully Omega won't be some dude you can unlock in the first 5 minutes or something.

New Game Plus is confirmed as well, which is pretty nice. You'll probably need it to unlock all the endings I would imagine, since theres multiple paths to take supposedly?

That's what it sounded like in this article http://www.gamingunion.net/news/square-enix-talks-about-final-fantasy-xiii-2s-new-game-plus--7021.html

Plus the list of trophies on http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_Final_Fantasy_XIII-2_Achievements_and_Trophies includes "Witness all Paradox Endings"

I finally listened to the Crazy Chocobo song in full and it brings out the nerd in me. I can't help but laugh and enjoy it for what it is, a well timed grab at the Chocobo heart strings. If you're going to exploit something that nerdy and get away with it, this would be the way. I love hearing the 8/16 bit Chocobo theme, such a throw back.

It's pretty awful but it is a nice attempt. Waiting for a good House version of the Chocobo song to pop its head up.

I have a question for anyone with experience with an Amazon pre-order. I originally placed my order with a credit card but I know have some gift card credit that I am thinking of using on this game. When is the latest I can switch it over?

I think anytime before it ships, once it ships you get charged for the order.

Anyone know what bonuses you get if you finished FF13/have a FF13 save file finished?

Thanks. I was kind of asking how soon before the release date it will enter the shipping process. I guess I'll just make sure I switch it at least a week in advance.

As for the bonus - The bonuses for FFXIII owners keep on increasing. Now Toriyama says that if you have FFXIII save data (it doesn't have to be clear data, just save data), you'll get special monster decorations. Additionally, you'll get higher success rates in the game's casino area. The title screen will also have some sort of bonus. http://andriasang.com/comz7j/ffxiii2_dengeki/
