Fox News EXPOSES the FULL FRONTAL NUDITY and GRAPHIC SEX in Mass Effect!
I must be in the minority here but I don't think "Have you ever played Mass Effect?" is all that fair of a question. You don't need to play it to be able to make a judgement on it.
Without playing it you might be able to decide whether or not something like this would interest you (we do it all the time based on the games we choose not to play, movies we choose not to see, etc.) but you sure as hell can't go on TV purporting to know what you are talking about and start spouting outright lies about its content.

I just realized I don't know what the fundamental point of the argument is? What do they want to accomplish? We have a rating system, what else is it that they need? Do they want people to stop putting sex in games? Or is there no point? Just bitching for the sake of bitching.

I love the thing about the reviews.

What is funny how bad this will hurt her sales. If there are other consumers like me, they all try to find reviews on everything they buy.

Yeah might as well leave her a crappy review of her book that I didn't read since she gave a crappy review to a game she didn't play.

I wonder if there's some sort of legal recourse that EA could take. Libel, slander, something else? They could make a case that the false report is hurting sales of the game because uninformed parents could believe all the garbage that they spewed about the game.

EDIT - Nevermind, the point was already made. Still EA vs. Fox News. I wonder who has more money to hire lawyers with.

Fox has more money. dude. rupert murdoch. EA will need to sell Madden for the next 200 years to catch up to that guy.

that's awesome. See, between this and helping with the attempt at setting up a lobby for the game industry, EA looks like it's finally taking some responsibility as top dog. I'll never buy Madden, but respect +1.

i read some of the reviews for Cooper Lawrence's book. they are very well written, and funny at the same time. this is my favorite:

Lacking in practical value, January 22, 2008
By M. Sanchez
After reading this book it doesn't seem to offer anything that average people don't already know. I get the feeling that Mrs. Lawrence is quite out of touch with reality.

There some chapters in this book that leave me wondering whether she does any research at all.

I'm also quite disappointed that Mrs. Lawrence would use sex appeal (the cover) to sell her book. Whether she realizes it or not there are a lot of kids in book stores today that will see this and get the wrong impression.

Image means a lot Mrs. Lawrence, and you are damaging the youth of America.
i love the last quote, lol.

some of the titles for the comments are hilarious too..

This book needs an "Adult Only" rating
This book should offer refunds.
Terrible book. Not worth the paper it's written on

Oh no - if Fox gets wind that it was made by "foreigners" that will bring a whole 'nother angle to their story - "Fox News uncovers a dark secret - a Canadian game maker is bent on corrupting American's youth! Just who is making your children's games and do they have ties to terrorist organizations? Why hasn't the do-nothing Democrat Congress stepped in to do something about this?".

OK, back to seriousness. While I don't think it would be necessary to play the game all the way through to be able to comment on it, if you do choose to comment on it (especially ON THE AIR) you had better make sure you do much more thorough research. I mean, at least watch the videos and talk to someone who HAS played it (e.g., to find out it ain't interactive if nothing else). But yeah, everyone else pretty much has this one covered here. It's good to see CAG come together over an issue ;). Hopefully Cheapy will make this a big topic in the next CAGcast.
foxnews is dying for attention. they have no choice but to apologize. they're making themselves look like fools.
To the gaming community they look like fools. To everyone else it's more like: who cares. It wouldn't surprise me if FOX did nothing. It's a video game story and they probably could care less. To them it was just some shit story to fill 15 minutes of time slot.

probably true but fox's ratings would probably suffer more than it did before. i find their news topics to be biased and uninteresting. but isnt that what news in america is all about?

anyways, the bad reviews made it to barnesandnoble.com, check it out.

That's why EA is going after FN for slander.
Yeah, I couldn't remember which was for spoken and which was for written.
"Slandar is spoken, libel is ledgered." And with that, you shall never forget again.

Actually, if you just know your word roots you'd rarely ever forget the differences between words. "Libel" obviously comes from the same word as "liber", "libra", "library", etc.

EA should sue. This segment was an absolute atrocity and someone needs to answer for it.

The argument that EA doesn't have the money to sue fox is silly. No, they aren't Rupert Murdoch, but it shouldn't be the most complex and expensive lawsuit, and the free publicity for EA would far outweigh any costs.

Just look at all the EA love for that letter, and compare it to general perceptions about EA around here.

Just remember that EA won't see a cent of the profits from Mass Effect. It was published by MGS. EA should be applauded for standing up for Bioware.

FOX doesn't get it yet:

http://kotaku.com/348791/fox-responds-to-ea-invites-onto-news-show
Fox News Channel has extended several invitations to EA through a company representative to appear on Live Desk With Martha MacCallum to discuss Mass Effect and the segment which aired on Monday. We have received no response.
Why the hell would someone from EA want to appear on your shitty show, after you'e already soffed a highly-regarded video game personality on the same show, about the same topic.

Just apologize.

"This book was not as Massively Effective as I had hoped"

Awesome post title on Barnes and Noble.

And can't EA just sue their ass already? This IS America! ;-)

Is it just me, or is anyone else offended by these book titles?

One sounds like a manual for women about how to be a gold-digger, and the other is the worst strategy for finding love I have heard in a while. She calls herself a "relationship expert", but I can't imagine many experts agreeing with this tripe.

Seriously, this kind of crap is way more offensive to me, as a male, than any depiction of consensual, non-abusive adult sex.

Yet as a female, I can see how these titles could appeal to certain types of women. I never went in for this sort of bullshit myself.

when did anyone say they couldn't sue? someone asked who has more money and I said Rupert Murdoch does (by a light year, despite how big EA is.)

kind of related but not really, check out our old friend Jack Thompson's book Out of Harms Way. they did the same thing to his book, review it at 1 star and completely shot it down until they stopped carrying the book.

i actually bought one of those books for my mom, the kept the jewlery thing, the title is pretty mis-leading, its basically about how to stay away from asshole-type men. it also puts men into "classes" such as "the party guy" "the way older guy" "the clingy guy" etc...it seriously isnt as bad as it sounds, but it does make you ask yourself...how stupid are (most) women that they keep making the mistake of purposely finding guys like this and then expecting them to change..the second book you listed just sounds stupid.

i finally got to see the video with sound, and i left very upset..i agree with the fact that geoff represented himself very well and completely owned miss lawrence, it annoyed me to no end how miss lawrence came off incredibly arrogant, but at the same token, never even played the game, i seriously wish a segment like this would get more time other than
sex = bad
or lol, video game? only boys play those!
Is it just me, or is anyone else offended by these book titles?
It reminds me of "Knocked Up". Debbie was telling Allison that if you really love someone you nag and nag and nag at them until they change their annoying habits and they'll thank you in the end. I'm still not sure if I'm supposed to like or hate her.

I just watched the "sex" scene on youtube... seriously, that's all it is?

Didn't God of War have a scene much worse than that (it has been a while so maybe I'm mistaken). Perhaps the fact that it's 2 females is really what pisses them off so much (although my memory is that GOW also had two females just the addition of a male character).

Listened to the IGN three red light podcast the other day, and one of the editors, can't remember which one, said that the footage they use in this story is actually his footage from IGN. They took it from there site and just edited out the IGN watermark, they both are owned by the same company, but they were discussing how you still aren't allowed to just take footages like that. If I were him I would take action.
If I were him I would take action.
 Yeah, News Corp should totally sue itself.

"Your honor! I stole that footage from myself! I demand that I pay myself restitution!"
 Yeah, News Corp should totally sue itself.

By take action, I don't mean sue, I mean contact Fox News and request that they remove the video since it isn't actually theirs. Its not like IGN can just start playing Fox movies or episodes of Modern Marvels from the history channel, just because they are all owned by News Corp.

this is whats going to happen to EA if they show themselves up on fox news. fast forward to 1:13

doesn't that look very familiar to you? thats what they did to geoff..

Funny that the apology is published in the NYtimes rather than foxnews. She's probably fairly innocent and got a call from fox saying come on promote your book by talking about a video game with explicit nudity and sex which is marketed to kids just before the show. It would be interesting to know how long they gave her to prepare and what they told her/sent her to do so.

That's probably why EA is a bit reluctant to go on FOX to debat this, it almost seems like a trap (considering FOX NEWs' reputation). Possibly to set them up and try to make EA look bad (on a totally unrelated subject) and FOX look like journalistic heroes. And right when the debat turns against FOX it "Thank you for your time" cuts mic.

There's really nothing to talk about anyways. FOX is in the wrong, all EA wants is a public apology. I'm sure it doesn't even have to be "on air" just a statement.

she had watched someone play the game for about two and a half hours. "I recognize that I misspoke," she said. "I really regret saying that, and now that I've seen the game and seen the sex scenes it's kind of a joke.
That's all I'm saying. She didn't have to play the game. Seeing actual footage is good enough. It was clear she hadn't seen anything before.

I like how before she went on the show she just asked someone what the game was about, I guess for her that is enough research to go on television and debate on the topic.

In an interview on Friday, Ms. Lawrence said that since the controversy over her remarks erupted she had watched someone play the game for about two and a half hours. “I recognize that I misspoke,” she said. “I really regret saying that, and now that I’ve seen the game and seen the sex scenes it’s kind of a joke.

“Before the show I had asked somebody about what they had heard, and they had said it’s like pornography,” she added. “But it’s not like pornography. I’ve seen episodes of ‘Lost’ that are more sexually explicit.”
She's still a stupid ignorant bitch for what she did, but at least she has the decency to apologize and realize she was blatantly wrong.

I would have hoped for a more sincere apology personally directed at the people at BioWare who she slandered, and an apology to the good people at the ESRB ratings board.

Of course, even with that I still won't be satisfied until Martha MacCallum and every single member of that Fox News Panel are homeless and destitute.

In other news: I love the New York Times.
Ms. Lawrence has apologized:

Pwnt, she should be forced to play through the entire game.

Everyone on FOX should. That would be awesome. You'd see them having discussions like, "What sort of engineering should I spec in!?" or "what was your starting class?!"

Oh, and to add. I purchased Mass Effect yesterday. All this talk made me wana get it! Hehe.

I can imagine how many kids are watching Fox News and are going to be disappointed when they find the lack of full frontal controlable sex with girls you can custom design. Now they should sue Fox for lying.
