Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek topic

Oh wow, Star Trek Next Gen started almost 20 years ago now...

Now that, that's making me feel old. When we hit the 20 year anniversary of Next Gen going off the air, I feel like I'm gonna be ready for a nursing home.

It's hard to believe it has been that long.
 That sentence could be taken all kinds of ways.
Heh heh yeah :D

It really is hard to believe that TNG is about as old as me, I have many memories of watching it with my Dad when I was really young, but it still doesn't seem that long ago.

I don't think this has been posted, it's Patrick Stewart's guest appearence on Extras. Very funny, and NSFW.

I watched the 2 hour documentary today and it was pretty good. I was really surprised that the Enterprise D went for almost double of the Enterprise A.
If I could only have one of those models it would have to the big Deep Space Nine (ok, and maybe a Defiant to go with it).

I got my sister to watch some of it. She liked it too. Amazing to see how much that stuff went for.

Well, I finally got a decent vid card and now I can play Star Trek: Elite Force II on my PC and it is AWESOME! I can already tell the one-player experience is going to be superior to that of the first Elite Force game, but the muliplayer in the first game is a lot better (and more active).

Now I just nee a nice monitor (LCD prefereably), and I am set.

its too bad I don't have that channel anymore so I can't see it :(

I held out too long for ST: EF2 to drop in price. Last time I saw it was at 29.99 everywhere before it went poof :( I was hoping to snag it for 19.99 but oh well :(

I know how you feel I was able to pick up EF2, but I waited too long for Bridge Commander and one day it just disappeared from store shelves. I hear it's good, especially with mods. I may have to obtain it illegally one of these days since I doubt it will ever get a reprint, and the ebay prices are way too high.
Enjoy Elite Force 2 Guile. It's a fun game, and it has some great bonus holodeck levels that you can unlock.

I was fortunate to get Bridge Commander when it was available at Wal-Mart. I need to re-install that now too. I want DS9: The Fallen but I haven't had any luck.

Too bad you guys don't have the first Elite Force. I'm part of an EF clan and we still play it quite a bit.

BTW, First Contact is on Sci-Fi right now.

I just thought of something. In First Contact they just showed the scene in which Worf says to Lily, "I am a Klingon". My question is this...

How can she understand him when she doesn't have a Universal Translator? Or am I missing something?

Bridge Commander is going for about $50+ on Ebay, I've been watching it for a while. The demo is really fun, but I second the "find another way to... obtain it" comment: if you can't keep the game on the shelves...

I just started catching up on my DVRed weeks of DS9. Just saw Tears of the Prophet. Great season finale, up there with the TNG season finales. Too bad Spike neglected to show the season premiere of season 7.

My gf and I just finished the 2nd season of TNG. And she likes it. So I informed her she is in for a real treat now that the show will get good. We've watched the first three episodes of Season 3 tonight, can't wait to get to the good stuff this season.

damn BC was pretty good but then I gave up after that mission where data gets off the ship and disappears? Stopped playing it like 5 years ago. Yea just like armada 2, its going for 50 bucks on ebay right now :O

Graphic wise, I think Legacy has better graphics. :)

I was actually wondering how the people in Montana understood the Vulcans who made first contact (and vice-versa) while I was watching the movie earlier...

Remember, that one vulcan stayed behind during carbon creek and that happened BEFORE first contact :p

I have the ultimate Star Trek gaming collection thing something or other. I think it's called the action pack, and it includes:

- Armada
- Armada II
- Elite Force
- Elite Force Expansion

I installed Armada II over XMas break, and found that not only is it a poor game, it aged very poorly. $50? That's out of control. Bridge Commander is at least fun.

The ST game I miss playing the most is "A Final Unity" for PC. It only runs on DOS (why...), and therefore you can't play it on an XP machine, just a Windows 95/8 machine, which I don't have.

If the episode "Little Green Men" is any indication, only one party need possess a universal translator.

Truthfully though, it's just a story contrivance that the writers themselves seem content to discard on a whim. I recall a TNG episode where one Klingon said to another "speak their language," as if the Klingons of all people would bother to learn english.

And, if you think about it at all, even a universal translator doesn't explain what we see.

I can imagine a device that would translate what you hear, but it would be like being in a dubbed movie. Unless the universal translator is embedded in your brain, controlling what you speak when you speak it, people watching and listening to you would notice something is up. I find it incredibly distracting when something on TV is synchronized incorrectly.

I just had a wonderful image of Sisko, Odo, and O'Brien disguised as Klingons in that DS9 episode where they have to infiltrate a competition run by Gowron. Could you imagine ongoing translations by Babelfish? They wouldn't last five minutes.

I recently read "The Corridors of Time" by Poul Anderson, which contained a device called a "diaglossa" that actually did interface with one's brain, causing you to learn language and cultural information for as long as you wore it. This was a time travel story, so no cross-species stuff, but it was an interesting idea. Wouldn't recommend the book, though.

A Final Unity came out before 95. You might try searching around and find some user made patch to make it work.

Maybe you're right. I didn't get it till well after 95 came out though.

wow they are showing voyager episodes on Spike tv at 1am in the morning :O

Weird thing is that they moved up episode showing of star trek so trek ends at 6pm :(
It was announceda few days ago that Star Trek XI will begin filming this fall for a Christmas 08 release, with Abrams as a producer and the director.
good luck to that.

Found this on StarTrek.com.

Minor news, but interesting IMO.

Masterson's "Robotech" on DVD

Chase Masterson ("Leeta") is the female lead voice in "Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles," an anime film which has been playing in select theaters across the country over the last month and is now on DVD. "Shadow Chronicles" is a continuation of the "Robotech" animated TV series and movies of the 1980s. Masterson plays "J.A.N.I.C.E." ("Junctioned Artificial Neuro-Integrated Cybernetic Entity"), an android created from both alien and human technology, in a tale about a decades-long war between Earth and an enigmatic race known as the Invid, which began after the human race reached the stars through the miracle of "Robotechnology." Mark Hamill is the male lead. The DVD is now available at Amazon and includes a "making of" documentary and other special features.

I really am not into Robotech at all, but I'll be willing to give it a chance since she is in it.
good luck to that.
Didn't that show have a good wishlist?

Matt Damon - Kirk
Adrian Brody - Spock
? - Bones

Adrien Brody as Spock sounds pretty good to me. So far that's the only part of the direction of the movie I somewhat approve of :D

Oh yeah, Gary Sinise as Bones. :applause:

I think Mike Myers should play Scotty, too. :D

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070309/od_uk_nm/oukoe_uk_finland_klingon

A Finnish member of parliament is aiming for re-election by campaigning with a translation of his Web site into Klingon, used in the TV series Star Trek.

"Some have thought it is blasphemy to mix politics and Klingon," said Jyrki Kasvi, an ardent Trekkie. "Others say it is good if politicians can laugh at themselves."

He said his politics posed some translation difficulties, since Klingon does not have words for matters such as tolerance, or for many colours, including green -- the party under whose banner he is running in the national elections on March 18.

Non-warriors can also access the site, www.kasvi.org, in English, Swedish and Finnish.

Despite the fact I know little Klingon, this is awesome. :) *edit* Looks like the site is down.
Man I haven't been able to watch DS9 (or any Trek, for that matter) in a long time. Stupid work. :bomb:
Even though I've been working a lot lately, I still don't make enough money for those things. ;)

If I didn't just blow $300 on anime I'd get DS9 right now.

It was worth it though. I got some titles I really want at some cheap prices. DS9 still has volumes available at my Wal-Mart all the time.
Tommorow is the last DS9 episode before it reboots, I am keeping these two episodes on my DVR permanently.
This might be a stupid question but when is DS9 on? I used to watch it at 1 or 2pm eastern when I could but now Spike just shows TNG and Voyager. It pissed me off because they were biulding up to the series finale!

And there contract for DS9 might be getting older and they might not want to renew it.

And I have been watching Enterprise on Sci-fi Mondays. The show looks so amazing! It's like watching a movie the special effects are so great. Sadly the stories are mostly bad and the charaters are completely bad.

The stories pick up during the third season, except for Voyager because Seven was annnoying, but that doesn't change the fact that the stories are boring and rehashes of old Star Trek and it really doesn't change the fact the the crew on the shit is useless and can't act. I watched almost 2 parts of the episode dealing with Data's great great great grandpa. Data, I forgot the actors name, id a wonderful job! Within 10 minutes he had more backstory than the whole main cast combined, and I liked him more and wished he could stay. I didn't make it to the third part of that arch because the main actors were so bad!
