To the haters: Why let it get your panties in an uproar? Ignore Smashboards & don't bother with the troll topics on SRK. I just don't get why people let it bother them whether it's considered a fighting game or not.
Well I know both me and Mark have experience running tourneys or even just having casuals.
It is a huuuuuuuuuuge bitch running them. You will receive complaints like no other. Set rules one way, complaints. Set them another way, complaints. And they will demand EVERYTHING from you, they will suck your soul dry.
"$5 entry with $2 venue fee? That $2 is a ripoff! We're hosting our own tournament at someone's house."
"Only 4 setups? WTF WE WANT MORE"
"I can't use my Wiimote? WHY NOT"
"They're playing 2v2 casuals and they're not letting me play! Make them switch it to FFA!"
"They're playing FFA and I want to play 1v1!"
"There's approximately 3 frames of lag!"
Seriously, the complaints against Smash are against the noisy and whiny community more than the actual game.
Also, the fact that it uses specialized equipment makes it really annoying. No other fighting game requires CRTs (because there's no 720p output, there's gonna be lag on an HDTV). No other fighting game plays on the Wii, and TvC doesn't count for now because the scene is small and because it's imported. You need to stock GC controllers which are no longer manufactured, not Wiimotes, not Nunchucks, not Joysticks.
Then you need to manually adjust and check the rules all the time. All the other games were fire and forget, I only had one issue when someone changed characters in SF4, but it was too late to do anything because he didn't bring it up when it happened. You have to account for double blind selection, stage counterpicking, keep track of who selects characters first. And sure it doesn't sound like a lot but when you have 1 or 2 people trying to run 4 setups and not all of them are aware of the rules (both Staff and entrants), it's quite difficult. It's made that much worse with the complaining, and it's really obvious when I hosted the tournaments.
