I thought FFXIII had a pretty fun battle system that happened to be poorly utilized for the majority of the game.

My biggest problem with FFXIII is that I didn't care for the pacing. The game felt very repetitive to me in a way that other RPGs don't. I guess if I was more vested in the story, some of that tediousness could have been alleviated. But I think the larger cause of that for me was that it's hard for me to stay interested in a game for 40 hours when it feels like there's nothing to do except walk forward and battle.
What do you do in other RPG's? Walk to the side and battle?

FFXIII is really no more linear than most other JRPG's. There's only ever one right path.

Not to mention FFXIII is really no more linear than most of the games this gen that people love. Uncharted, Gears of War, God of War, etc are all just as corridory as FFXIII. I haven't played The Last of Us yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case as well.
Other RPGs tend to have NPCs, towns, some puzzles, open environments, or at least something else to take up your time than walking, battling, and cutscenes. And while I'm not a huge fan of those other games you mentioned, it's worth noting that those games are very different experiences compared to FFXIII. For one, they don't have to stretch their gameplay over 40+ hours. And secondly, I'd still argue that they have more variation in gameplay than FFXIII, even if the story paths are linear.
I still don't know where the hell you're getting 40 hours from. The game opens up and gives you options no later than 25 hours in. Then you can do whatever you want. You're acting like the whole game is just one corridor and you're never given an option to do anything.

Again, the first... I don't know, however long until you get the paradigm system, those hours suck. Once you get the paradigms and stuff starts to open up in terms of battles, it's a lot more interesting and then you hit Gran Pulse where you can do whatever you want. There's no gun to your head forcing you to continue the story immediately before you can go back and do all the excellent stuff (first game where I ever did "hunting" quests...)

The hardest enemy in Kingdom Hearts is the camera.
I think the hardest enemy is the story.

Makes me cry. Like The Last of Us. Which is a total ripoff of Kingdom Hearts.
Story was some generic anime tripe with Disney and Final Fantasy characters tossed in randomly. I'm sure nobody save TMK would give two shits about KH if it lacked those characters.

Gummi ship shit was hilariously bad too. Need moar lazerz.

Best part of KH1 is its OST.

I'd take a KH with Disney characters only. Let me play as Mickey or something instead.

I think they already made that. It's called Epic Mickey or something.

Even KH is better than that game.

Yeah, running up to cover, shooting an entire army and then running up to the next area with cover and doing the same thing is an experience with a lot of variety. I couldn't imagine a game like Gears or Uncharted being 40 hours. The 6 or 7 hours they last for already feels like too much. The fact that I played through FFXIII and didn't get bored says something about it. I don't think it took 40 hours though.

Those games go for the extremely linear and cinematic experiences which is something I'm personally getting tired of. Besides, even though XIII doesn't have towns there's still a ton to do in the game besides the story. Can easily spend more time doing the extra stuff than it takes to beat the story.
Last time I checked, Uncharted had more to it then what you described (and hell, even Gears for that matter). And I agree that those games couldn't last 40 hours and still be fun. That's part of my point. I'm not even a big fan of those series. And I'm not saying that you can't dig FFXIII. I was just explaining the feeling it gave me personally.

40 hours was a general estimate I was giving for the game's length. And the hunting quests didn't do it for me. To me it felt like mostly the same thing with the addition of having to find the thing you need to battle. And by that point, while the battles were picking up in terms of strategies, I was growing tired of battling in general, so those things sort of balanced each other out.

Not to mention the hunts had the same empty feeling for me as the rest of the game. It was just stones telling you to kill things. To me, that's not a good replacement or substitution for NPCs or towns or whatever.

I must have missed the parts with the variety. Unless you count a couple minutes of platforming or puzzle solving variety. For the vast vast majority of Uncharted you're committing mass murder.

With Gears I have no idea what you're talking about. On rails shooting maybe? I really can't think of much variety in those games.

So what 3DS games do I need to get? For sure I'm gettin that Fire Emblem, and that SMT IV when its out.
My favorites:

Luigi's Mansion 2

Ghost Recon Shadow Wars

Animal Crossing New Leaf

Professor Layton 5

Rhythm Thief

DKCR

Mario 3D Land

Pushmo

Sakura Samurai

Aeroporter

A few minutes of puzzle solving and platforming go long way to break up the monotony of combat. With that said, those things take up more than a few minutes, and a lot of the time they are interspersed in a complimentary way with the combat. And Uncharted is known for it's setpieces more than it's combat. I'd say that helps break up the pace. Fighting on a train or exploring a cave make the game more varied. And the combat itself becomes varied when you mix it with different setpieces and environments.

And in Gears, I remember riding a Brumak, flying on a [whatever that thing was called], dodging mortars, and riding on vehicles to name a few things. And on top of that, the combat isn't as simple as you described (well, maybe in the first game...). When it's at its best, Gears has you flanking enemies, coordinating with teammates, and finding good positions to support yourself, such as places with turrets or ammo. There are different smaller open environments where battles take place in different ways. Movement is important during battles. I'm not saying Gears isn't at all repetitive (it is, and I wish it were better), I'm just saying it has enough variety to keep my interest for the 6-8 hours it lasts.

Conversely, Final Fantasy XIII did not offer as much variety to me, and it quickly felt far more repetitive than other games to me, especially because it lasted a lot longer than games like Gears and Uncharted.

Hey guys, here's a tip. Stop arguing with whoknows.

Also, let's keep this thread on topic, there is an RPG thread where you can have this discussion. I don't want to have to report anyone.

Amazon is having a sale.

So far, I have:

Starfox 64 3D

Ocarina of Time 3D

Super Mario 3D Land

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon

Shinobi

RE:Revelations

New Super Mario Bros 2

Mario Kart 7

I've only really played Luigi's Mansion, and it's good so far, but I'd think the rest are good too (it's why I bough them).

I also want DKCR 3D. But not until it hits under $30.

Eh, I have Zelda OoT on Gamecube, and since I'm not a Zelda nut I'd rather not rebuy.

RE:Revelations looks interesting.

How is MGS 3D? Or should I just wait for dat legacy collection?

A lot of good games have already been listed, there's a lot of good games out on the 3DS though. If you like Fire Emblem that Ghost Recon game does have a similar style of play so you might like that. Ocarina of Time 3d and Tales of Abyss are great games but you might have played them before (both are still worth getting though), it would be cool if enough people got Mario Kart 7 that we could play it online. Since you listed RPGs only you might like Devil Survivor Overclocked, Etrian Odyssey 4, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Soul Hackers, or even Heroes of Ruin if you like ARPGs (although it's pretty easy, it does have online coop though!). Not sure if you are into fighters but I know they are big in this thread and both DoA Dimensions and

Street Fighter are pretty fun as well.

I have the original DS version of Devil Survivor that I still haven't played. Is Overclocked that much different?
I never played the original so I can't directly answer that.

This is whats listed on the Megami Wiki under differences, but since you haven't played it before either I'm not sure how much it helps.

Aside from the story expansion with the 8th Day scenarios, the Demon Compendium makes a return in Overclocked, allowing the player to register and resummon his own customised demons rather than continuously repurchase them from auctions. Over 20 new demons have also been added to the game, including several powerful demons of races like Fairy and Beast to give the player a suitably high-leveled demon from those races to feasibly use in the endgame and 8th Days.

More skills are also implemented, including a larger variety of Physical skills to encourage use of strength-oriented playable characters. Training team leaders has also become less of a hassle as, like in Devil Survivor 2, all team leaders, active or not, receive some EXP when one team wins a battle. The Watchful and Vigilant skills, when cracked and assigned, can boost the EXP gain to speed up the leveling of those behind in levels.

A title and rewards system is also implemented to reward players for good performance during the game and also to slowly unlock post-game bonuses as the player accumulates these points. Along with these new changes, the player can now choose the game's difficulty level (Easy or Normal) depending on his or her tastes.

MGS without that circle pro is pretty hard to play and it has frame drops. Unless you really need your MGS 3 fix just skip it

I'm personally skipping the legacy collection. I own 4 and the HD collection no real reason to drop another $50 on it

Let me know what you think of Shinobi. It is extremely straight forward but challenging. Also, where is this fabled sale?

I've been having a lot of fun with Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars.

Unrelated, but I'm going to reply to your GoW:A post by quoting this.

No I don't hate you... I just thought I said all I needed to on the game previously and I didn't see a direct question or anything.

It's not a bad game by far. The story is weak though, compared to 1-3 and it feels like one of the PSP games in that regard to me. Having the world weapon system (kind of necessary to make the best use of the multiplayer portion's development) didn't feel as good as the rest of the series with the blades+subweapons for me. Visuals looked pretty good, but overall it was just lacking some of the spark for me. I think it would have done better on the whole if the scale had been smaller and they had made it a GoW game for Vita. All the Vita owners would have picked it up without a doubt and the expectations would have been tempered because there wouldn't have been the idea that the team had inherited the GoW3 engine so they could focus on something awesome (and instead focused on adding multiplayer to another series that didn't really need it.)

Solid game. I'd give it like... a 7?

Well, I guess I just received a lesson in how my patience has changed over the years. Three or four years ago I could spend hours abusing stupid contests and the like just for a 1/10,000 chance at winning some MS Points or something. Today, I went ahead and turned PS Home right the fuck off when I got to "collect these four keys around the showfloor!"

Only NSMB 2 for me since I have the others that interest me (SM3DL, FE:A, KI:I, MK7)

I was kidding about the hate part. Also if
Kratos didn't kill Orkos there wouldn't have been a GOW 1-3

I hated Troy Baker in ninja gaiden but hes pretty fucking great in last of us. The next ocelot!

Good timing on the post: my MK 3DS, NSMB2, and AC 3DS arrived today.

I have animal crossing but havent played that much of it. Im still in my ghetto tent waiting for my house to be built :(

survived bonnaroo, came home to a beta invite to FFXIV :whee:
I didn't get to play much of it but I was enjoying it a good amount, if anyone else has it and want's to potentially play a bit during the beta I was on the Midgardsormr server.
