I picked up the series late with THPS3 and moved to THPS4 for "bigger/badder/more".
I gave it up after Underground.
I played a bit of THPS1 enjoyed it. Then I got into THPS2 and really liked that game and played it fair amount, even got the fairly hard to play isometric THPS2 for GBA. Then THPS3 came out and it really perfected being able to chain almost every move in the game together combined with some fairly sweet levels and an awesome soundtrack.
No game after THPS3 added anything meaningful to the general gameplay. I mean sure THPS4 added an open world but that didn't really change the main core focus of the game, namely the skateboarding and trick system. From there you had all the Underground games which were much of the same (so I skipped all of them). I played THPS Project 8 which supposedly added a new mode for tricks, but overall it felt fairly pointless to me since it was easy to score insane amounts just using the old system and so the game felt like the same thing they'd been pumping out since THPS4. And, I wasn't going to touch Ride with a 20 foot pole.
