Ghostbusters - Gen. Discussion & Info

Wow sucks to hear everyone hating on this game but oh well one good thing about it is that Gamefly bumped up the release date to tomorrow rather than thursday like they had it.. :D

Got to play it/beat it tonight as a friend of mine is a manager of a store that got it in early and went over to his to check it out.

I thought it was pretty lame gameplay wise, but Bill Murray (per usual) was cracking me up. I had high hopes for it, but oh well. I kind of expected it after the relative development hell it went through and the fact it ended up at Atari was not very comforting.

Definitely rent it before buying it and if you have it preordered, consider switching. I've only got 10 bucks on it and am switching it.

Its really short (we beat it in one 5-6 hour sitting) and really easy. Unless you care about achievements/trophies and are a Ghostbusters fanatic, I'd say pass on it until it drops big time.

Yeah...thats why I'll be picking it up this afternoon

I hated the way you always had to revive peeps 24/7 during every major battle.....really annoying and it made it a no-buy for me. The story is very well written however!

Yeah, I think you have to view this game for what it is (and the reason for why it was ever written). It's just a third movie, in a different format. Whether or not that makes it worth $60 depends on how big of a fan you are. Even IGN stated in their review that it's basically just a loveletter to GB fans.

I'll be picking up my copy in the next 20 minutes, and really doubt I'll be too let down. 1. I took advantage of the 30% trade in bonus by flipping $3 PS2 games from BBV, so that helps my "cost" significantly. 2. I'll enjoy the moviecash ticket that I'll be getting, so that gives me another $8-9 in value.

As a game, Ghostbusters won't be the strongest thing we'll see this year. But considering it allowed for something most people thought was impossible, you have to give it credit. I mean, I think most people would love to see their favorite movie franchises from growing up...that only ever had a crappy NES version, get remade with current generation technology. Personally, I'd go apeshit for a true Rambo game.
the head-to-head comparisons is just weird. how can the game look that worse on the Ps3? wild.
Considering how much time they talked up the PS3 version it is very surprising.

This broke the game for me. Its absolutely excruciating in some places. The non-controlled Ghostbuster AI is horrible.

But yes, the story is easily the best part, the graphics aren't too shabby either. Its just too short and the gameplay mechanics are bad.

This is why I'm still in, even though I know I could just rent it. Besides, I have GS credit to burn.

Wooooooooooooooooooooooooow. This is awesome. I'm a big GB fan, so I suppose I understand why non-fans or people who just like GBs would not be falling over this title. But damn, I just started, and there are already a bunch of funny ass references from the previous films. God, I love this game/movie.

Ok, I'm not crazy, someone else remembers that too.
For those that don't know, if you buy it at Toys R Us this week, you get a free $20 GC.
Slight warning on that, according to the TRU website the GC expires 7/31/09, so you don't have that long to spend it.
Someone posted on GF that it's a recorded message from Dan Akroyd! Call this number to hear it: 1-888-212-7672.
Cute touch, I just called to hear if it was; methinks I'll be stopping by GS to pick this up today.

As "easy" as everybody seems to think this game is, how the hell do I destroy all of Stay Puft's minions in the art room (or whatever it is) of that one building? The only back up I have is Ray, and he's mostly useless, and seems to get incapacitated within 60 seconds. I've tried staying near him and babysitting him, but then I get jacked from behind. Anybody got any tips for this?

I'm currently on the library level and I'm really enjoying the game so far. I really feel like I'm a Ghostbuster, which is great since Ghostbusters is my favorite movie of all time.

They just used a normal gift card for me with no expiration date listed on it. When I bought RE5 the gift card had the expiration date listed on it. Anyone know if this means my gift card doesn't expire?

Did that happen at the end of the game?... I always got to Gozer and then couldn't beat it.

How is this game? worth the money?... I'd love to play it, but I think it has to have some decent online play for me to pick it up this early.

At the end of the NES game, yes. I never beat it either. I never even played it, actually.

After playing it for about an hour.. I dig it, but I don't think I would pay full price for it. It's definitely pretty fun, it's something new.. I'd say the $20 GC offer at TRU this week is the best deal for it if you absolutely have to have it.

Looks like it would be a pretty fun few days but I think I'm going to have to put this in my Goozex list and wait on it rather than purchase.

Also, please tell me this game has "On Our Own" in it. Even if it doesn't, tell me that it does.

Im satisfied paying the full price for this.

Everything is really well put together. Very good details for fans and some great voice work from almost everyone involved.

I just finished the library level and back at the firehouse. Will continue playing tomorrow.
Can't wait to try out the multiplayer on this.

Man do I love this game. This game is exactly what a movie based game, and what video games should be in general: pure fun. I've laughed and jumped, and just enjoyed myself immensely.

Oh and for everyone complaining about having to revive the GB, well you must not have played Jericho. Now that game was horrible when it came to reviving.
lol @ the "Conglaturations!" message from the original Ghostbusters on NES on the computer screen in the station
Now people might know what my sig has been about for a while now, ha.

Been playing the game for awhile now, just finished the 3rd mission/section or whatever of the game. The game in my opinion is...OK. Its really obvious that Terminal Reality took a lot of time into taking the source material seriously and putting it to good use. They did a great job with putting in a lot of detail that Ghostbusters fans would appreciate. If you haven't spent time talking to Viggo at the station, please do. I was really amazed at the number of lines they recorded for him. I was also surprised by the game's creepy atmosphere in the Library level. Given the goofy nature of the films (despite the 2nd movie's darker tone) that particular level was legitimately atmospheric.

But besides the obvious attention to detail the game is still just OK. Combat is frustrating at times, and is very often insane and hectic. There's been several points in the game where I've been surrounded by 5-6 ghosts, and with 5-6 ghosts throwing stuff at you and 4-5 total Proton Guns going off, the game just gets entirely too hectic and I often have no idea WTF is going on. Because of that chaos, it's very hard to keep track of who is hitting you and where the damage is coming from, which is where the frustration factor comes in.

In addition to that, it's often very difficult to dodge the attacks of ghosts for some reason. However, the more I played it, the more I was able to use cover to protect myself, still though, dodging attacks is still needlessly frustrating and sometimes even unavoidable. There was a point where I even got knocked onto my back, only to get stuck against a wall and get continuously knocked down until I died...pretty lame. Besides myself getting knocked down, like other posters have mentioned, having to revive a teammate almost every 60 seconds is another big annoyance in the game.

Also, some of the physics can be a little janky. There's a part in the game where Egon and Ray ask you to use your capture beam to move some wood 2x4s out of the way. I had no trouble removing the first one, but the 2nd and 3rd ones seem to have gotten stuck in the environment and I had to wrestle the game for awhile to get them out. Besides that one instance, I've noticed several times LARGE objects hitting my character, yet he doesn't react...at all. On more than one occasion, something as large as a Taxi driver side door or a huge cement chunk have hit me, but simply bounce off. This is a small gripe, but I think that when I notice something that huge hitting my character and nothing happens...its just kind of weird to see, but thats just a very very small complaint.

Lastly, I personally do not find the graphics to be all that great. The destructibility of the environment is cool, besides what I mentioned before about the physics. Walking into a room that is fully furnished then fighting and capturing a ghost in that same room and seeing the aftermath is pretty cool. But I find the textures to be pretty bland, and sometimes blurry/just plain ugly. The graphics are certainly passable, but its noticeably worse-looking than a lot of other 360 games.

Now, that sounds like a lot of complaining, but I'm still enjoying the game. However I'll admit, I'm mostly enjoying the game because of the source material. The story is slowly unfolding itself and coming into its own after what I thought was going to be a rehash of the first two movies (once you play it you'll see what I mean) and is generally light hearted and humorous. But every time I pop the game in and experience the overly hectic, needlessly frustrating game play I can't help but think how much better this game would've been with an extra few months of dev time.

Overall, I'd give the game a C+. Its a better than average licensed video game with a good, fun source material to build from but marred with enough slight game play and technical issues that you can't ignore them and ultimately will negatively affect your enjoyment of the game.

So... is this a game to
wait for $10
or
get it at $30?

Im leaning toward $30 I loved the movies, (getting the first one on br from amazon) and it sounds pretty fun.

I am pretty much where you are and I feel pretty much as you do.

It's not a terrible game by any stretch. It just isn't a very good one either.

I think this game is GREAT! Anyone who is truly a fan of the movies will agree. I understand what your saying about it being hectic at times... but I think that is one of the best parts! There are some negative things... I also had a hard time pulling the beams out of the doorway, and sometimes I got stuck on rubble in the hallways of the hotel... but I think it's on par with any other decent game out there. On top of that, you get to be a fucking Ghostbuster!

just rented this game and played for a bit...its an ok game but one main problem is that trapping ghosts isnt that fun...the story/cutscenes all are pretty good but im not sure if ill finish this...
Beat it.

I heard the multiplayer is a blast(I've yet to try it) which automatically makes it more than just a rental.

If this is how you feel, there's no helping you. Did you enjoy Luigi's Mansion?

N8, what's your opinion... since I play online with you in a lot of games, is this something we could really get into online? or is it the GTA online thing, kind of there to be there and not much fun.

Seriously? They did a dang good job with the catching ghost's mechanic in the game. Someone compared it to fishing and that's basically what it is. I actually always felt a sense of accomplishment after catching a ghost because of the struggles they were putting up.
N8, what's your opinion... since I play online with you in a lot of games, is this something we could really get into online? or is it the GTA online thing, kind of there to be there and not much fun.
Well, I haven't touched the multiplayer yet (didn't really get a chance to since Live was down all day yesterday). From what I've read though, the online is co-op...but you still compete for score. I don't think it's like the campaign though, but more like various "jobs" or something that you have to complete.

And knowing that, I could see it being pretty good. The main problem I've had with the game is that your AI teammates are worthless and what the game throws at you is too much to take care of by yourself. I started out on the "experienced" difficulty, but went down to casual because I found myself getting pissed off and yelling obscenities due to things that were out of my control.

In these kinds of games, I feel like your AI teammates should perform AT LEAST at the level the game expects you to perform at. Having to revive them and finish off all of their ghosts is just a cheap way to make the game harder.

As A Happy Panda mentioned, there are many times in the game where it's just chaos. You've got like 5-6 (or more for Stay Puft's stupid ass minions) enemies on the screen, objects being thrown around, 2-4 Ghostbusters with proton packs, and you. What makes it crazier than, say a game like Halo, is the fact that most of these enemies can fly. So, you're constantly spinning the camera up/down/around. On experienced, I would sometimes try to take a second to evaluate where everybody was and where I needed to be, then I'd get annihilated from behind.

There's a GoW style charge/run button, but it's almost pointless because the ghosts can keep up with you or just throw shit at you. Ultimately, I decided this is not the kind of game I want to be frustrated by, and I really just want to enjoy the story and the characters. So, I started over on easy. Maybe I just suck at the game, but I'm not a professional gamer, so what do I care? But, I think with all human players, you could probably balance things out, and having to revive a teammate because he was legitimately overwhelmed would be far less frustrating than because he's just a fucking idiot, haha.

I did an MP game last night. Pretty fun. Kind of hectic, but at the very least, with all the shit going on, there wasn't any lag or slowdown. I like. I can see myself playing that consistently for at least a week or two, which is more than I can say for most MP components. With a game like this, I expected the MP to be rushed shit, but it doesn't seem that bad.

never played luigis mansion...but like mario brothers

for people that have played a lot does the catching ghosts get any more fun or is it pretty much the same as the beginning of the game?
