Grand Theft Auto IV - Gen. Discussion & Info

The achievements are pretty normal, few of them are ridiculous though but expected. Not a fan of the multiplayer ones and the 100% but I understand. The one I hate the most is beat the game in 30 hours. Going for 100% and beating the game completely could give this game over 100 hours of game time.

From GTA-4.net
The movies that we watch, the games that we play... they just wouldn't be the same if it wasn't for the audio. The Grand Theft Auto series is no exception; the ambiance of the city is as important to Grand Theft Auto as the Imperial March is to Star Wars. GTA IV aims to maintain this healthy balance of audio and visual, and on that note, I'm happy to say that GamesRadar has just recently posted a multi-page Audio Q&A for Grand Theft Auto IV.
The Q&A includes Matthew Smith, Craig Conner and Will Morton, all of whom are senior employees with the Rockstar North audio team. Some quotes that we found particularly interesting:
 • "Stand in the street and you’ll hear three different radio stations at any one time coming from passing vehicles, all sounding appropriately tinny or boomy, depending on the type of vehicle and whether its doors are open, its windows broken, etc."
 • "It was our aim that you could place the player in a random position on the map, shut your eyes and listen, and be able to tell where you are, and what time of day it is, and I think we’ve achieved that pretty well."
 • "For multiplayer, we balance [the sound of gunfire] so that guns only really sound dangerously beefy when they’re at a distance you can be hit from, so it’s intuitive what’s threatening and what’s someone else’s private war."
 • "It’s difficult to quantify how many speaking parts there are, but at our last count there were over 740 unique voices in the game. There are over 80,000 individual lines of dialogue, more than 7000 of which are Niko’s lines. If you were to listen to each line back to back, it would take over 29 hours. Also, these figures don’t take the radio, TV, and mo-capped cut-scene dialogue into consideration."
 • "We also decided to make the pedestrian dialogue more realistic in GTA4. As an example, peds in previous games would walk around and randomly chat to themselves if they weren’t doing much else. In real life, people (generally!) don’t go around talking to themselves, so we dropped this behavior from GTA4. However, we realized that the random chat of old GTA games was a good way for the player to pick-up on what sort of personality a ped has, so we created the cell-phone conversations in GTA4 as one realistic way of portraying personality."
Great stuff Joe. Lol. Nice captions BTW. Also is that last pic Niko's cousin falling off?!
I don't think so. Roman is a bit fat...

Is it just me, or is Saints Row 2 looking like it's trying WAY too hard to be GTA.
I actually sort of enjoyed the first for what it was, but this looks like a step DOWN from the original game. I mean... the lacking humor and everything.

At one point I thought I saw Ronald McDonald getting a choke slam.

What achievements? Link?
What achievements? Link?
Here's the list: http://www.thegtaplace.com/gta4/achievements.php

I'm not crazy about all the multiplayer ones either, especially the one where you have to be playing someone from Rockstar. I doubt I'll get the 30 hour one either, I like to take my sweet time and have no plans to rush through the missions for an achievement.
I'm still going to cough those up as fake till I see the actual confirmed list.
Those were just from someone posting on the GameSpot forums.
Some of those achievements were mentioned in the OXM review, so they're pretty much confirmed.

Some. So i'm still going to wait and see.
I find it impossible that "kill a Rockstar Dev" would even make that list.

Perhaps it's one of those achievements were you can kill someone that killed someone that killed someone that killed a Rockstar Dev? But even those achievements are hard. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Yeah, if it is just kill a Rockstar Dev that would be near impossible as I'm sure most of them won't be playing a whole lot of the game, but if its kill a Rockstar Dev or someone who has then that would be easy. If you wait long enough that will basically automatically happen as those achievements spread like wildfire.

Also, that Saints Row 2 trailer looked so horrible. The graphics look terrible compared to the first one.
Need some advice guys.

GTA IV or Textbooks? As a student I am extremely cheap. If I buy GTA IV first, then my aunt is going to have to pay for them. (Kinda awkward and not exactly great making your relatives pay for something.) If I buy textbooks first then I can't get GTA IV until 2-4 months.

Ha, I never bought textbooks during my entire college career. You probably don't even need them until halfway thru grad school.

Than again, I suppose it depends on the person.

I just finished reading the interview I linked and it seems all this talk about the episodic downloads is actually pure speculation: aka media crap.

rockstar has yet to even decide on what it will be and won't know until after the game's release.
I think it is going to suck.
I really hope not. :whistle2:( I love Call of Duty 4 like a lovable, non-redheaded bastard son, but I need something to play relief for when I get exhausted of the game. At very least, Grand Theft Auto 4's story mode should be entertaining. Plus, it has individually-separated fingers. What's not to like? ;)

Okay, okay, I understand the skepticism. I really didn't like San Andreas, and felt I had more fun when it was a 2-D overhead game, but Vice City was fun. The series has that bit of optimism from me. :)

I was kidding! This game is almost a sure-fire winner, imo. Now will it live up to everyone's expectations? No, because no game could. But its going to be one helluvah game.

Oh, I absolutely agree, Help. The expectation is incredible. The hype could fill the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. It seems it's inevitable that some people will be let down - due to their own unreasonable expectations. This is why I kept my expectations very low. :D If I find it more enjoyable than San Andreas, and comparable to Vice City, then it's a win situation for me. :)

I just put $5 down on a pre-order. I never pre-order because I never have trouble finding games (systems are another story) but I figured it would be easiest since I work near the Gamestop and plan on getting it on launch day. This way, I can go on my lunch break and not have to worry about it.

I seldom/never pre-order, either...but GS got my $5.00 on this one. Goddamn I want that special edition.

If anyone works at a retail store, could you kindly post here when you have the games in the back? I'm trying to figure out when I should hit up the local game store here that broke street date on Halo 3 to see if they'll have it early.

I intentionally stayed in the dark about the game for the most part. Aside from screenshots, that's about it. I remembered back when I first picked up GTA3 on a whim and it blew me away. That's the same kind of feeling I'm expecting to get the first time I play this one.

I'm so busy finishing up my classes I decided I'm just going to wait for my order online. I was pretty tempted to pre-order it in store so I could pick it up on day one but again I wouldn't have the time to play it.

The Summer is going to kick ass, Mario Kart and GTAIV and a dash of COD4 since I haven't had time to play it as well. HELL YES!

I'm nervous that I got caught in the hype train here. I don't want to be getting too excited and then be dissappointed.....but man those screen shots are looking amazing. I'm purposely not clicking on links that show information I don't want to know just yet....can't wait to get my hands on this.

I may go and pre-order this. My friend's BB got a memo stating that they are expecting to sell out all of their copies with pre-orders, and may not have any that morning/afternoon. I don't know how accurate it is, but it was the memo they put out.

Bah, I was going to BB since I never had trouble getting games from them on Day 1. I'll guess I have to pre order it now.

I am purposely keeping my hype down for this. It really isnt that hard, since all I know if that there is a new aiming system.

Agreed. These new screens look beautiful. Maybe the other ones were stretched out of their native resolution?

The ones that look bad seemed to be from the Multiplayer side of the game. I wonder if they pulled a page out of Ubisoft's book and "toned" down the MP graphics to make the game run smoother.

They did.

No way they could get the game to look as good with 16 players in the city vs 1 player in the city.

Hopefully the difference between SP and MP isn't too bad during gameplay.
Hopefully the difference between SP and MP isn't too bad during gameplay.
At least with MP I hope that so much is going on that I won't notice. Still, there is no denying that SP is where this game is going to shine. For me, I am going to think as MP as purely a nice bonus, that is until I beat the game. ;)

So as long as things look good on the SP side of the game, I will be more than happy.

oh and I know it's weird to say this, but Liberty City Stories still stands as my favorite and the best IMHO. Yes, people consider it to be minimal, but less is more with this game IMHO and it had the best story.

anyone elses favorites?

also, what hooks you about GTA?

for me it's the gameplay and the humor, with 90% of it being the humor. No other medium has touched this complexity and level of humor ever.

I just ordered the strategy guide off of Amazon. I'm not a fan of strategy guides (partly because I don't like to use them and you can find a lot of the material online), but GTA4 is going to be huge. No way am I finding all of the hidden things without a guide with a good large color map. I'm not going to use it for storyline missions however.

Well, we got our allocation numbers today. They're sending us over a hundred strategy guides, and about 50 extra copies beyond preorders on the X360. For PS3 regular edition and SE on both systems, it'll be just the amount of preorders. More will come quick, though. Hollywood Video is also getting over 60 copies for rent.. holy crap.
