Grand Theft Auto IV - Gen. Discussion & Info
Well, we got our allocation numbers today. They're sending us over a hundred strategy guides, and about 50 extra copies beyond preorders on the X360. For PS3 regular edition and SE on both systems, it'll be just the amount of preorders. More will come quick, though. Hollywood Video is also getting over 60 copies for rent.. holy crap.
Just out of curiosity, was the number of Halo 3 copies more or less compared to GTA IV? Just a rough comparison. Sorry don't really know the numbers.
:dunce:

I recommend no one check any gaming websites after the strategy guide comes out the 24th because there's definitely going to be those people that try to ruin for everyone.

It's YMMV, but Halo 3 had less preorders (GTA4 is winning by 3 or 4, that number will increase as the date draws closer), but they sent us.. if memory serves, they sent 197 or 198 copies of Halo 3.. every single one sold. That was one huge shipment. With GTA4, the initial shipment will be a litte over 150, with a "quick turn" shipment the next day and the day after. This is gonna be huuuge.

good point. I really prefer to be surprised in this game.

Are a lot of cags going to be playing this online. I think the multiplayer seems very interesting, but in GTA. I dont know, I feel that it is a solo experience. But the free mode might be fun with a bunch of cags messing around. Nevertheless I'll try out the online, and I hope it ends up being very good. I'll have the game on release so add me if you want...

And whats this sh*t about the dlc being much larger than expected, a new city... That sealed the deal for me. Until a few days ago I was debating which console to get it for, I originally ordered it for the ps3 and the main reason I'd buy the ps3 version is because of all the cags and friends that I already know on psn. But I just got my 360 today, too bad its a POS model (Hitachi drive and non-falcon), but it was dirt cheap so I dont have the right to bitch. But I don't know anyone on xbl yet, besides my real world friends, but they are all Halo fanboys. So add me, I could use some cag friends on xbl.

Considering there are 16 MP modes...there will be at least a handful that CAGs will want to play. The Crooks and Cops mode sounds like a blast.

yeah, it does. I sort of like the gta race mode. Racing + gta mahem = fun
I do hope it becomes a regular cag multiplayer game. Since I don't play Halo and am not a regular cod4 cag player, I hope this gets popular on cag and I will definitely participate.
Wow...the strategy guide was only $12.91 at Amazon.com, I had to get one.
Snagged one, too...thanks for the tip.
Are you guys getting the strategy guides to collect or to use?
To use. I don't collect strategy guides...usually just trade/sell/give them away after I'm done playing through the game.

I'm wondering why you'd get a strategy guide at this point, however cheap.

Just easier to have at hand than the internet? Something to read when you have to take a bathroom break?

There are a few reasons to buy a strategy guide, for high-quality information/maps/etc, so you don't have to print stuff, and for collection reasons. I prefer just GameFAQing, but a lot of people on here buy strategy guides.

I like the pictures, and the maps. Sometimes online guides just don't do the trick. When you're searching for the hidden shit, it's easier to actually see where they are with the physical guide.

Gotcha'.

Y'know, one thing I always mean to do, but always forget, when getting a new open world game is having a map of hidden crap handy.

Not to follow it point-to-point, but to mark off whenever I find a package at a given location.

Usually by the end of the game, when I'm hunting down all packages, I end up being one short and not remembering which spots I'd happened to pick one up. That becomes really tedious.

It sure would be nice if they marked on your in-game map all of the spots you'd already found something ..

Anyhow, must remember to do that this time.

Say, is it Monday yet?

I had a whole system down for San Andreas. My guide was filled with Post-it notes with packages numbered and crossed out when I found them. It was a little disheveled, but it certainly helped.

I tend to just print out a map from GameFaqs and simply X the dots off as I hit each one.

Again, though, because some are in goofy spots I'm never sure which one I'd already collected incidentally throughout the game.

I'd get myself a guide, but I don't quite trust myself to not pull it out whenever I get a little stumped in the main game.

Believe me. I have no issues with pulling out a guide the moment I get stymied at any point in any game. I just don't have the time to be frustrated with attempting a mission several times when I can just read a hint anytime I want.:D

I probably won't even look at it until I get stuck somewhere...I'll inevitably get frustrated on some challenge at 4am and I'll be happy to have the guide around. For

That brings up another open world dilemma ..

Do I kill myself to do side-missions earlier in my game, and thus reap the advantages they provide in the main storyline? This seems like a good strategy from a logical standpoint, but tends to get a bit dull, though it might extend the life of the game.

I end up doing a blend of main story and side missions, which is probably the best way ultimately - rather than to come at it like a fucking chore.

It does sound like the mission structure of this game will be rather looser, as it carries on a mission over time, rather than having a single-mission tunnel vision. Likely this will really facilitate the blend method.

I agree with this. I don't have time to sit there and get frustrated. I'll try and figure it out, but if I can't I'll look it up. I'm thinking about getting the guide from Amazon for that reason.

Anyone considering getting the guide from Amazon should do so this week. The price will inevitably go back up once the game releases. There's a thread somewhere that if you add another guide (get $25 in books), you can get a $19.80 rebate from Us Weekly.:bouncy:

That's what I'm going to do. I'm getting the game from YF360G.com, and the guide cheap too. Can't beat that.

Well, I haven't had so much trouble with very many missions that I couldn't get through the worst in a few tries. And I tend to enjoy playing enough that multiple playthroughs don't bother me.

The only one that I can remember ever absolutely destroying me mentally was The Driver mission in Vice City, for which I doubt a strategy guide could give any useful advice.

Godfuckhell, I hated that mission!

How does that site work? Don't you have to sign up for offers, and such? Is it a mailing list?

I'm pretty skeptical ..

I still haven't completed that mission.:bomb:
I still haven't completed that mission.:bomb:
You know, it's an interesting exercise in psychology. The first few times I tried to race him, and was so absolutely devastated that I assumed I was doing something completely wrong, and the next hundred thousand or so successive attempts involved trying to ram him first, or get the cops to knock him over.

One time I actually managed to get him stuck in some spot, and then booked it to the finish line, but he actually still managed to get through and beat me by the end.

Around about the third million or so try, I tried to go back and just race as carefully and intently as I could, completely ignoring him, and I made it, with a bit of a lead.

Not sure if that was a challenge-scaling mechanic, but it was excruciating.

I saw someone make a recommendation of getting out of the car immediately, picking up a nearby slow-motion pill and trying to take him out as he made his way back to the finish line. Novel approach. Don't know if that works, but if you're still interested it's worth a shot.

What really, really, really fucking annoyed me about the mission .. Why the fuck do I need a getaway driver that I can outrace?!
Wow...the strategy guide was only $12.91 at Amazon.com, I had to get one.
Thanks for posting this, Linkin. I grabbed one, too, mainly for the reasons that have already been discussed here- the map and help with the hidden packages. Best part is that my wife is still in the middle of a 30 day free trial of Amazon Prime, so that free 2 day shipping will be nice.

It did not take me long to pass the driver i just bumped him so that he would spin out.

I hope the map doesnt change too much for this one, I knew my way around liberty city like the back of my hand. In San Andreas I could not even make it to my first safe house, I had to constantly look at the map which would then freeze the game for me.

what are you guys adding to your shipments at amazon? I had an order all ready to go with 25$ and i pushed 1 click buy and then i realized that every item wasnt eligible but the guide. Geez. I usually just buy a DVD but im holding off on those at the moment.
It did not take me long to pass the driver i just bumped him so that he would spin out.
Then you got massively lucky or have incredible GTA driving skills. I had numerous attempts in which I'd bump him, but he'd always straighten out right away, and beat me to the line. This isn't an uncommon issue we're talking about here - lots of people had problems with that mission. Again, I think there's a psychological edge to this.

Well, for one the map is going to be like New York, not really mapped to the original Liberty City. Which is the advantage, because NYC is laid out in a pretty simple grid, and not having to worry about one-way streets and staying off of sidewalks should make it even easier than the eral version.

As for the San Andreas, I completely agree. I always had a miserable time getting back to the cul-de-sac - always went down the wrong street and ended up awkwardly going down that stupid back alley pretty consistently.

Any games you wanna buy? Accessories? MS points?
If this were the first game in the series to be released, do you think the high marks would be warranted?
If it were the first game, wouldn't it be even more epic?

If this were the first game in the series, there probably wouldn't be as many similar games, we would have no idea what we were about to be hit with, and the expectations would be so low that the scores would be astounding.
