In my opinion Halo 2's multiplayer is superior in terms of weapons, balance, maps, gametypes, and even online interface.
I definitely agree the maps suck balls. Lockdown, Midship, Zanzibar... these maps are absolute classics, and Halo 2 blew me away in the multiplayer-map-design aspect. Halo 3 hasn't impressed me much so far.
I do like the equipment in Halo 3, though. Nothing rocks more than effectively using a bubble-shield.
There are obviously some problems, but just like with Halo 2, I expect later updates to solve some balancing issues.
I agree that almost all of Halo 2's maps are superior. I like most of the the maps in Halo 3, but they aren't as good as the H2 ones. The terrain is too random, not enough right angles in the map design. Hopefully they'll have a classic map pack available with all the Halo 2 maps. I'd enjoy that a great deal.
Other than that, I have gotten used to the differences in the sword and sniper so I have few complaints.
