How were we supposed to find out about this? I appreciate that they at least made it available in the U.S., but not when so many were left out of the loop.

Unfortunately, I've taken to checking a few sites daily for LEGO news, otherwise it's easy to miss out:
http://www.brickset.com
Brickset is what I use to track my collection, it also has pretty good news, though it's based in Europe (England I believe), so they're a little slow on news for here.
http://www.brothers-brick.com
I'm not entirely sure, but I think this is an American blog. They are the most up to date blog, and they were one of two sites that worked on the petition and ended up with the "exclusive deal" for the Castle advent (the other site was classic-castle.com, which focuses just on Castle sets)
http://www.eurobricks.com
Eurobricks is another European site, it's got some interest creations and such, but I mainly read it for the message board, it's definitely the most active forum for LEGO that I've seen.
At least bookmark those (or better yet, add them to you rss feeds if you use them).
Another good site is
http://www.e-klocki.com which focuses on Adult Fans of LEGO (AFOL), but is updated less frequently and focuses on the crazy creations people make.
I (well, my wife) had a weird shipping experience with LEGO last summer. She ordered the Green Grocer set direct for my birthday. As of a couple of days before my birthday, it still hadn't arrived. She called and they apologized profusely and offered to overnight another set, which arrived in time.
I'm curious... did you ever get the 2nd one?
