Let's talk about Comic Books (And read some inside)
My top 3 on-going comics are:

Y The Last Man
Walking Dead
Runaways

ex machina im enjoying, and suggest it. Im just enjoying the other 3 more.

And yeah, the Runaways hardcover is great, and uncensored unlike the mini digest ones.
I really just didn't want to pick up the mini-digest, because it's just not the same to me. But I'll pick up the hardcover eventually.

And I've only read one issue of Y: The Last Man and I thought it was great. But titles like that, Ex Machina, and Walking (which I hear a lot of praise for as well), are pretty much new territory for me. I've been reluctant to pick any of them up because their totally different from what I normally read.
....
....
Wolverine?
I picked up the "Enemy of the State" arc and thought it was good. I shoud probably pick up the issues following that as well. And issue #32 looks really cool. I might pick that up next week.

If your own the east coast... Cartoon Network is showing 2 episodes of Justice League right now, 2 AM. I hope they release the show as boxsets on DVD, instead of those 3 or 4 episode compilations.

I read almost every comic that comes in, unless im pretty sure its crap or just not for me (Aquaman, forgotten realms, savage dragon, spawn, uncanny x-men...).

"Something Different" is what keeps me sane. Runaways is superhero crap, but fun. Ex is political without taking on anyone directly. Walking dead is a great look into how people act...with zombies.
X-men is good artwise with Larroca, and Uncanny is okay too. Wolverine is the best bet.
Quick question: What happened to Jean? And what's up with her daughter?

Question for a comic book store owner: Do you pay for your comics that you keep?
Quick question: What happened to Jean? And what's up with her daughter?
Jean is dead, was temporary reborn and was dead again. In X-men : The End she alive again but that is a future story.

Rachel is the new Marvel Girl and in the Uncanny X-men books.

Wow. Thanks for putting that in a nutshell for me. I miss reading X-men comics. When I was young, it was the X-Men cartoon that really got me interested in comic books.

I jsut finished the second Astonishing X-Men arc. Very, very good. Unfortunately, it's going to be at least December before they start the next arc. Maybe this will at least give John Cassaday some time to do a couple of issues of Planetary.
Are you referring to when they were doing comics for Awesome Entertainment? And Churchill did The Coven, while Liefield did that Fighting American title which was basically Captain America, and the Avengers. I wonder if he got sued for that.

But speaking of Churchill, if the first issue of Supergirl is a sign of things to come, it might just become my favorite series. And issue #2 has been delayed by a week. Along with these titles:
I know what you mean...I uhh...love the artwork they're doing for her now. Plus I read the preview online like two weeks ago and it seemed awesome. Just thrilling.
If your own the east coast... Cartoon Network is showing 2 episodes of Justice League right now, 2 AM. I hope they release the show as boxsets on DVD, instead of those 3 or 4 episode compilations.
I've been hoping for boxsets of JLA/U, Teen Titans, Spider-Man (basically any series after the 80's one), and the Fox X-Men to have boxsets. Yet, I must say as none have come.

And shit, I just noticed it's on now. Time to Go Watch.

Yaeh, you basically summed it up. I'd have to go look it up again through my stockpiles of comics, but Rachel came into this universe/dimension through some warp correct? She wasn't originally in this universe if I'm not mistaken.

And yes, I know I'm probably doing too many back to back to posts (used to be and still am King of them ;)) but here's a great comic topic since I don't feel like making another topic, What's your favorite Comic artists? We already know who the great writers are (well most of us), but who's your favorite artist?

My favorite is probably Mike Mignola. I just love his artwork. Some of the best, if not the best, I've seen.

I also like basically any artist that works with Alan Moore. From the moment Moore works with them, their artwork seems to go to the next level and it is just so in cue with his writing. Watchmen's artwork is simply stunning and still holds up to this day unlike other older comics.

Can't think of his name, but the guy that did the artwork for Sin City was/is also excellent.

And then there's my man Salvador Larroca. His artwork in X-Men is probably some of the best runs I have seen. Just stunning. Some of the best since Mike Mignola's I want to say.

Joe mad (when he works), Mark Bagley ( is he ever late) Larroca, J. Scott Campbell, Al Rio (?), The Kubert bros, Jim Lee, Jae Lee, Pat Lee, Ramos, Chris bachalo, Alan davis (excalibur was the greatest when he drew it), David Finch, Carlos Pacheco and Marc Silvestri.

Wow thats a list.
Question for a comic book store owner: Do you pay for your comics that you keep?
I'm a comic shop manager, and i do pay for comics. As far as i know, the owner doesnt actually get any comics himself. He'll read them as they come in, but ive never notice/heard about any he's taken home.
I'm a comic shop manager, and i do pay for comics. As far as i know, the owner doesnt actually get any comics himself. He'll read them as they come in, but ive never notice/heard about any he's taken home.
If I were a comic book store owner, I'd turn the store into my own personal comic book buffet.
Can't think of his name, but the guy that did the artwork for Sin City was/is also excellent.
Frank Miller.
What's your favorite Comic artists? We already know who the great writers are (well most of us), but who's your favorite artist?
Jim Lee and Joe Mad. 'Nuff said, but I'll emphasize anyways.

Jim Lee is without a doubt my favorite artist. And I think his artwork has only gotten better with time. One of my personal favorite series was Divine Right. It never received any critical praise, and the response to it wasn't too positive, but I thought it was great. And when I stopped reading comic books (again), it was Batman: Hush that ultimately drew me back. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: If Jim Lee released a comic book full of just his drawings of stick figures I would still buy it.

Joe Mad's style is just so unique to me, and I wish he would get more recognition for how great his art is, instead of how late it is. But his run on Uncanny X-Men was remarkable to me. I started reading X-Men comics because they were X-Men comics, and soon figured out that I was also reading them because of Joe Mad's art. When he went on to do Battle Chasers, I thought it was great. I don't remember the story too well, but I thought the characters and the artwork were amazing. So after taking such a long absence from the comic book world, I was absolutely thrilled when I read the announcement of his return. I was hoping he would be returning to an X-Men title, so I could as well. But even though I'm not the biggest fan of the Ultimates, I'm already sold. The guy is that good.

Honorable mentions have to go to: Michael Turner, Alex Ross, George Perez, David Finch, Salvador Larocca, and Ian Churchill.

I used to really like Turner's work alot back when he was doing Witchblade. Now he's definitely hit the big time with Superman/Batman, and his exclusive with Marvel. His artwork doesn't have the same effect it used to, but he still gets kudos.

The same goes for Alex Ross' work as well. I remember seeing Kingdom Come for the first time, and being absolutely mezmerized by it. Nowadays his work doesn't have the same awe-inspiring touch to it, but he still deserves recognition for what he's done.

When I think about George Perez I'll always think of the covers he did, where there were hundreds of characters, and absolutely no spaces left empty. The man just amazes me.

I really like Finch's style. Their's something very dark, and realistic about it to me. His art is an absolute show stopper.

Salvador Larocca is such a solid artist. I remember seeing X-Treme X-Men for the first time, and thinking about how gorgeous the art was. And his stuff now is just as great. He's definitely a very underrated talent.

Ian Churchill, to me, is as consistent as an artist can possibly get. I don't think he's drawn anything that I haven't liked. From The Coven to Supergirl, the guy can do no wrong. I'd buy his books just to check out at the artwork.

I'm pretty sure that I'm missing some people. But I've said too much already.
I jsut finished the second Astonishing X-Men arc. Very, very good. Unfortunately, it's going to be at least December before they start the next arc. Maybe this will at least give John Cassaday some time to do a couple of issues of Planetary.
I've heard only high praise about Astonishing X-Men. As in "It's the only good X-Men title out there." I usually try to stay away from picking up trades, but I'm going to have to for this series.
I've been hoping for boxsets of JLA/U, Teen Titans, Spider-Man (basically any series after the 80's one), and the Fox X-Men to have boxsets. Yet, I must say as none have come.
Their have been rumors that Warner Bros. might release Justice League and Batman Beyond on DVD boxsets, mainly because of how well the Batman and Superman animated series have done on dvd. I don't see X-Men or Spider-Man making it to DVD anytime soon. Theirs some legal issues betwen Marvel and Disney over the Marvel cartoons that Disney are still airing. And I remember Marvel was trying to sue Disney over the rights to the shows because they felt Disney wasnt handling the property correctly, and it was causing Marvel to lose money from it. Which is true being that the dvd sets would sell quite well. But their is hope, since they released the Fantastic Four animated series on DVD just a few months ago, and I believe Disney is airing the show as well. So hopefully we get X-Men and Spider-Man sometime down the road. Until then, I have to admit that I recently downloaded a torrent that had the entire first season of X-Men. The show is even better then I remembered it.
And yes, I know I'm probably doing too many back to back to posts (used to be and still am King of them ;)) but here's a great comic topic since I don't feel like making another topic
Bump this thread as much as possible. It's the only place I actually post about comic books. I just wish we could rename the thread to "DC's Infinite Crisis Comic Book Thread."
If I were a comic book store owner, I'd turn the store into my own personal comic book buffet.
But, just like any buffet, you'd get sick of it after a while. Besides that, when you have to start worrying about the quantity you have to buy, wether or not its actually a good comic, it gets easier to distance yourself from the product

Whoa, hold up, that kind of thinking could be dangerous! Seriously it could. That kind of thinking is basically what gets me out of comics for periods of time. And I try to save money by not trying something new at the buffet. I could talk like this all day, but I'm starting to confuse myself now.

By the way, whats your store called? And does it have a web site?

I'm not usually a Green Arrow fan but I looked at the preview for #54 on dccomics.com and it looks pretty interesting, an Infinite Crisis tie in, of course. I've said it once and I'll say it again, that $1 Countdown to Infinite Crisis has ended up costing me a LOT of money.

Comic City, located in Pontiac, Novi and Canton MI. We have a web-site that is insanely shitty, filled with pics from 5+ years ago, and you cant buy anything from it. Sad really.

Speaking of Infinity Crisis, lets direct the conversation towards that.

Just think of all the people that have died so far.
Sephanie Brown, Max Lord, Plastic Man's wife, Tim Drake's dad, Blue Beetle, Firestorm, Indigo... I know I'm missing a bunch, and the Crisis hasn't even begun yet.

Complete insanity!

It's an Infinite Crisis. People are just going to keep dying non-stop! Well, not really. But I did make a post before about how someone always has to die when theirs a big comic book mega event.
I've been out of the loop for a while but I popped in B & N and just read up on 1602. GFS - Good f*cking shit.
The thing that pisses me off with these big events is that no one seems to stay dead (with a few notable exceptions like Uncle Ben or Gwen Stacy). You lose the emotional impact. Jason Todd was better off dead. I haven't read that far beyond War Games but I've heard he comes back as another Hush type nemesis. Good idea but it would've been nicer had I not read about the concept when I was reading HUSH the first time around. With Jason dead, you get a Batman who's even more morose and self-punishing due to the event. Same with Hal Jordan. I think that some ppl just have a hard time letting go. How come Wally West can make a successful transition and Kyle Rayner can't? If you can make/find a loophole and make it work (like K Smith's Green Arrow), then resurrection is fine. Same with Bucky (if it's done well) but killing people for shock value isn't going to work anymore for me. They need to die and stay dead - that would be more shocking to me.

If you have the means, I highly suggest getting it - it's writing at one of it's finest.

You absolutely read my mind on the Jason Todd issue. His death had such meaning and significance simply based on the impact it had on Batman. I thought bringing him back was such a cheap, and obvious move by Winick. But he'll end up dead again, or something else that will somehow be explained after Infinite Crisis is over.

It IS highly cheap. It cheapens the whole darkness of Batman. Even it's to bring that Dun Dun DUNN! moment, it still feels cheap in comparison to how grim Batman is. He was dark (but campy) before jason's death but when he died, it just brought him to a whole new level that you can see personified in Miller's Dark Knight Returns. Very gritty and... and... dark. His whole methodology is about inspiring fear by dwelling in the shadows. And to throw Jason back in just makes Batman cheesy. Leave the cheese factor for the sidekick comics and keep batman the way he is - dark.
Leave the cheese factor for the sidekick comics and keep batman the way he is - dark.
The description you just made is also the same way I feel about the Batman movies. The two films prior to Batman Begins were just so cheesy and goofy. And it was Batman Begins that got it right, because it was so dark.

I won't be reading Inifinity Crisis until the last issue is released so I'm asking for a favor. I would appreciate it if you guys would give spoiler alerts on any posts that might give away a plot twist or relevant information. Thanks for the consideration.

Yeah, you can distill what Batman's essence is supposed to be in one word - dark. There's nothing that describes it as simply.

Whoa Whoa Whoa back up just a damn minute, when did Firestorm die? He was alive in Villians United #4, and quite pissed if I remember correctly.

As far as other dead but not staying dead characters, what about Darla Aquista? She was dead for a little over a year (less in comic-time) and now she's back...

There have been a hell of a lot of deaths lately though. Ever since Identity Crisis its been open season on any B-listers.

I had to go to 4 stores and when I finally found it they only had 3 issues left. I couldn't believe how fast that sucker went. It is a really good issue, it doesn't have the same WTF moment but the end shows a very lasting moment, and somewhat powerful as well.

Ahhh that biased piece of garbage! Actually I'm just too cheap to spend $6 a month on a magazine which, more or less, has the same information that's available online. $6, that's like 2 more comics I can follow a month.

It looks like some interesting stuff. What appears to be the opening page looks like a great moment between the trinity. The art looks like it'll be top-notch.

Its going to be out Oct. 12, I can't believe how fast the past 7 months (since Countdown) have gone by.
I refuse to look at that preview! Ok, well I skimmed it real quick. But I usually only check out previews for comics that I'm not sure I want to pick up or not. And that definitely doesn't apply to Infinite Crisis.
that was in last months issue of Wizard :) hopefully everyone can enjoy it now
Was that the one with the Joe Mad/Ultimates preview, or the one before it? I wanted to pick up a copy of Wizard, then noticed that the magazine has gotten a lot thinner, their were no extra's, and it cost $6 now.

Did you ever read that Frank Miller speech where he ended up ripping an issue of Wizard on stage?

HA! Are you serious? I was just joking when I said what I did about Wizard.
Oh, I know. I was just wondering, because I only recently read it.
I googled it and skimmed the transcript. Sounds like he was pissed at Wizard cause they're too mainstream and portray too much of a stereotypical comic book fan. Oh well, some of those old school comic people take themselves too seriously. Another one is Alan Moore and the huge deal he's made over the V for Vendetta movie. I know its these guy's livelihoods, but to me, its entertainment and when you make such a huge deal about it you make the rest of the community look silly as well.

Yeah, but I look at how great the Sin City movie was and think about how it would have turned out if Frank Miller had just let anyone turn it into a movie so many years ago.

Comic book movies, while entertaining, are never much of a concern to me. Sure I'll see most of them, but the storylines in comic books are sooo much better and more entertaining because they can draw on (sometimes) 30+ years of already established mythology.
