If one format loses early on do your really think the price drops on hardware and specials on some dvd's would continue at this rate.
Yes, I honestly do.

They won't make money until it reaches DVD level prices. Why in the world would they keep them high forever?

As for the Fox press release.

Robocop day 1!!!!!!!!!
Guilty pleasure since I was a child.
WB is currently at the top of the HD pile with 30% of the pie and they are working on their TotalHD disc (Blu one side/HD the other)

They want studios to go neutral (sweet sweet royalities) not exclusive.
I like the TotalHD concept, although not sure about the execution.

With Paramount leveling the studio format playing field a little by going HD-DVD exclusive, I think it will make the industry work harder to bring prices down and innovate sooner as now the dual format confusion is going to continue to be a barrier to entry for many potential HD software consumers.

As a casual AV hobbyist, I'm grateful I'm able to support both formats, and for me, both formats can co-exist even in this "war".
Love the 2:1 mention at the top. Gotta keep doing that!

Awesome! BD-J features that only PS3 owners and people that buy new players can use! Unfinished Format FTW!
28 Days Later?

Why the hell would they release that? Wasn't part of it filmed with Canon XL1 digital video camera which (I believe) is non high-def?

Not shot on film. :(

Yeah, same here.

Thankfully, I know for a fact that The Twilight Zone was completely filmed on film except for 3 episodes.

That is one of my all-time favorite shows along with Six Feet Under.

Pretty unspectacular lineup from FOX, IMO. "A Bridge Too Far" or "From Hell" are of interest, but not the rest (for me, anyway: I know Die Hard is a popular series).

Maybe I'm just no longer in love with mainsteam movie companies to an extent. I took a look at my BR collection, saw I don't own a single Paramount film, looked at their BR release list, and felt no remorse about it. I feel somewhat the same about the FOX list, though I admit that many of their scheduled releases are very popular.

Eh. The last thing I'll say about Paramount is that you HD DVD supporters better buy 3 copies of every movie they put out from now on, in order to compensate for the long term losses of shutting themselves off from 67% of the market.

I'm not hugely enthusiastic about Paramount. I haven't looked at their list, but the big thing for me is Star Trek. And with the exorbitant amounts they are charging now, I don't even want to think about what HD versions will cost. Die Hard? Hell yeah. Otherwise?

Color me feh.
Can't say I'm looking forward to a TotalHD disc. Seems rather pointless to me.
Same here especially considering the fact Warner is already neutral.

I know they are doing it to cut down on manufacturing cost and so stores can save shelf space but I hate spending extra money on something I will never use (at least with combos I can use the DVD side) unless it happens to convinces a exclusive studio to go neutral.

A giant chunk of my current collection is Warner.

I'll be lucky if they release half of that list.

Transformers was all I was excited about from Paramount (I don't know what movie comes out from who but all I know is what this is what I was looking forward to lol)...I'm kind of sad but that's ok. I'll just....find some other way to watch it in HD lol

I'm not about to drop another 2 to 4 bills just to watch one movie.

Indy and SPR are the only ones I'd be interested in upgrading for, and it's already been commented on for Spielberg.

Here's hoping he edits in hippie peace signs instead of swastikas, too.

I am a little dissapointed about the Transformers coming out only in HD-DVD, but I happen to have my 360 add-on, so no big deal. I do like the blu-ray versions better. I do see a difference on my set, but I have to admit, my PS3 goes through the hdmi and my 360 goes through component cables.

Does anybody think WB will be able to turn studios toward their TotalHD format? I understand why WB is doing it seeing they are neutral, but I can't see TotalHD converting studios like Disney or Universal to a neutral status.

I think it may swing a studio like Lionsgate but I really don't see anybody else jumping on the bandwagon.

Yeah, I forgot about DreamWorks in that list, which mainly is Gladator.
How would you TotalHD a movie like Face Off?

Which is coming on 1 BD disc, and 2 HD DVD discs with the same features.
Just the movie on each side and then the extras on a extra DVD?

Transformers and Star Trek are about the only things I'm really interested in from Paramount, although I'm sure there are a few other things worth owning that I haven't thought of.

Not sure if this is enough for me to pick-up the HD-DVD add-on; I have a PS3 but am pretty apathetic to both formats.

Smaller ones like TWC, I could see. I think most companies are happy with what camp they aligned with.

I'm not even remotely subscribing to Digital Bits' Bill's crazy conspiracy that the Paramount change or TotalHD is going to cause two distinct groups to form will cause the format war to explode into a million pieces.

After CES, I'm sure we'll see smaller studios go more neutral than they have in the past.
I own a whopping two titles - Departed and 300. It's just too expensive to expand right now.
Too expensive?

It's 20 and under most of the time if you know where to look.

I'm currently at 44
Just the movie on each side and then the extras on a extra DVD?
What? And let you HD DVD guys brag about how the total HD version has two discs and only one BR?
Star Trek (at least the show) was not shot on film.

HD wouldn't do a thing to it I'm afraid.
Um, yeah it was.

All live action footage was scanned in high definition from its original 35 mm film elements, while visual effects shots have been digitally reproduced.

Nah, it isn't that bad.

That's including pre-orders and my 3 from Toshiba

I'm more interested in the movies.

There's no way HD sets of the shows are going to be close to affordable given Paramount's pricing strategy with the all the other Trek season sets :hot:

Face Off has been canceled on Blu-ray as of today I reckon.
It is Paramount, right?

Doesn't matter to me.
I just found the 2 discs to 1 thing interesting.

If people are dying for Face Off, better import it while you can.

I'm at about just 15 movies.

Movie selection is way too limited for my tastes for me to seriously start buying.

Plus I spent much more money on CDs, and games.
im probably close to 30 titles but thats including both formats.. not including preorders...
45 for HD DVD and 24 for Blu-Ray as of right now. That will change in a few days as I am buying a crapload on August 28th and still waiting for my 5 Free from Toshiba.

nice independence day and day after tomorrow

can finally throw the D-VHS tapes for those two into a box in the basement where they belongs

now just need Xmen 1, 2, and True Lies and my D-VHS tapes will be obsolete and I can get the ugly deck out of my set up
ewww.. you still have a vhs in your setup..

i seriously want to just throw them all out and set them on fire
720p/1080i VHS Tapes tho, 50 gigs of data!

wave of the future!! in 1998

Fox missed their chance to announce 24 on blu-ray. In my informal world experience that would turn more heads than anything they listed. (If it already exists I apologize, but I assume from the wording about Prison Break it does not)

Almost no one knew about them.

format war= consumer win

Do you think we would be getting "get 5 movies free" promotions if blu-ray was the sole format? Or $199 hd-dvd players?

No, we would have to pay $1,000+ for an hd player and $35+ for movies.

And yes, dvd is still kicking everyone's ass, but the only market growth is in the HD market.

So what it boils down to is, two neutal studios picked a side today..... :)

For those who don't get the joke, it's one studio who released on both formats, and one who released on neither.

Yeah good point, there should be 10 different formats, think of how great that would be.

Sure, you'd have to buy 10 different players, but they'd all be cheaper

Although I am extremely dissapointed that I am not going to see Transformers on Blu-ray, as that is one of my favorite movies, And Paramount is a big studio, to me, this is stupid as it makes no financial sense for Paramount as Blu-ray sells more and all this does is prolong this war which is good for people who own HD as it drives prices down, but also makes people mroe reluctant to buy into the HD format with 2 competing formats. Fortunally, we don't ahve to worry about Indiana Jones on HD-DVD because thats a George Lucas/Speilberg movie and they aren't going to pick a side.

And thank god this got Fox started, the Die hard movies and Indenpendence Day are awesome. All we need now is Sony to release Ghostbusters, and Rambo on Blu-ray.

I think high definition players are still out of reach of some Americans, or they are not willing to fork over the money for a player and extra for movies (which could be had cheaper on the regular dvd format).

You can buy a cheap dvd player for around $50 or less (sure they don't last long). If you want to buy a newly released dvd they cost you around $15 at Wal-Mart. That doesn't count the number of dvds found in bargin bins for next to nothing prices.

I don't really think the format war is going to be over soon. I am choosing to buy movies I really want and right now, I can either go HD-DVD or Blu-ray (I prefer Blu-ray format).

How long do you think before a format winner is announced? 1 year, 2 years, 6 months?
IHow long do you think before a format winner is announced? 1 year, 2 years, 6 months?
At this rate...never. A lot of Pro Blu-Ray backers will say the same thing as of today. You either get 2 different players or wait for a combo. I'll get a combo once they get down to $600 or so, until then I have my PS3 Blu-Ray player or my A2.
