 That's the first thing I thought when I read the press release.
I'm sure XBL has brought LG a ton of money...why not release on HD DVD? Oooh....I can't wait!!!!

Especially when i see lions gate and new line on xbl... ive always thought they need to get with it and go neutral.

Also.. i prob would have just released the bluray discs they already had pressed... i don't think they can lose money by just releasing them if they were done.. but w.e who cares..

They now need to atleast drop to the 23.95 for new releases instead of sticking to that combo disk price

I noticed top gun has a 19.95 price so thats great.

I really dont care that wb supports both as they are probably the only company that gives us great deals. Their 20% is probably doty material for me. I dont really see "total hd" as a bad idea. I rather have a disc that can be played on a br/hd player over hd/dvd
Those discs have to be ready somewhere in a factory....

Super valuable.

Like the Commando BD.
I know. I plan on going to every damn store next week and buying Blades....its pressed...ready to be sold...on eBay!

If you have an FYE/Suncoast type store I'm sure they 'didn't get the memo'.

anyword if they actually shipped those br copies? i also don't see blades as a huge title that people will be after..

get prepared to overpay as it is at a fye.

If they didnt ship then dont bother..
Yeah, keep arguing this point. Maybe it will help you forget about Transformers.
I don't think he cares about transformers.. he has an "old school" taste.. :) Maybe hes mad about top gun

What's to remember? I haven't seen it, and don't really care to. I won't say it's not a significant loss for BR, but for me personally, I couldn't care less. You may as well try to rub it in that I won't get to see "Throw Momma From the Train."
Maybe hes mad about top gun
 Nah, not quite. As I've said before, there are only two HD releases that I'd like to own, and those are "Chinatown" and "The Big Lebowski." I don't see any other current or future releases that sway me at all.

I'm getting my wife to check her store tonight to see if they've got Blades Blu-ray in the back.

She said she's speculating that they'll go out on the shelf for next Tuesday, but have it marked as a send back for Wednesday morning.

8 days away...I imagine it has already shipped as Blockbuster for example gets movies 2 weeks early.

I imagine some will leak out and go for $70+ on ebay for a 'Recalled OOP' movie. I plan on buying every single copy I can find.

How many Blu-ray movies do you own? Which ones?
I find it amazing on on format like HD DVD that has more exclusive titles on it that you have only 2 you would buy.

Blu-Ray users thank you for your support.

Hmm. Off the top of my head:
Elvis Costello in Concert
Blazing Saddles
The Searchers
Goodfellas
The Departed
Casino Royale
300
Planet Earth
The Fifth Element
Layercake
Talladega Nights
Corpse Bride

And about 4 or 5 others I can't remember.

All but two of my BD movies I bought merely for the "ooooh, nice picture... drool drool, and it's cheap!" factory rather than really wanting that movie.

I'd say there are less than 10 titles on both BD and HD DVD that I would want truly in my movie collection.

And as for Blades...I will make a mint off that silly movie. Mwuahahaha!

Is it you sporadic that had something like 44 discs?
Didn't someone here have 80+?

Do you actually like all these movies, or just kinda like, and want to see in HD?
I'm hardpressed to find 10 I would like to own, much less 40+!

i admit that ive bought a few titles that i would have not normally bought on dvd.. but then again i think i have almost bought as much hi def discs that i did dvd's (not including wrestling.

it has made movie watching fun again

I own 45 HD DVDs as of today and 22 Blu-rays.

Yes, I enjoy nearly all the movies I own and the ones I don't will either be sold or traded soon. I don't see movies in theaters so spending $20 for a movie and owning it is OK in my book. If I find out I didn't care for it I can usually recoup 80% of the cost if not more.

Seeing guyver's sig reminds me about something peculiar concerning Smallville Season 6 on HD DVD and BD. Why is it the HD DVD version has a longer running time? They both list the same content. Might we be seeing something exclusive on the HD DVD set?

You know what, I'll give you that.
The few BDs I've bought of movies I wouldn't buy on DVD were fun to watch at the very least.

Hmm.
I never even thought about this.

Putting the stupid format war behind me, movies are fun now.
I enjoy watching HD content.

They both list the same content. Might we be seeing something exclusive on the HD DVD set?
The HD DVD version has an extra disc and 80mins more content.

Yeah, I'm the one with 44 movies.

Yes, I like all of the movies I own. I blind buy alot so a few have been sold but the 44 listed should be here to stay.

I've abandoned DVD all together. If a movie I own is out on HD, I sell the DVD and upgrade. If not, I rent from Blockbuster Online.

I have even more that I want to buy before the year ends. Dawn Of The Dead, Tremors, Next, The Omega Man, Enter The Dragon, The Complete Matrix Collection. My wallet weeps

My pictured got buried with all the responses...

I have 3 HD DVD movies to buy next week for sure, 2 Blu-Rays in the mail I bought, and there are still several titles I have yet to buy but will shortly.
I stopped buying video games so my money goes towards these red and blue cases.
The HD DVD version has an extra disc and 80mins more content.
Yeah, but I want to know what the extra content will be. Maybe the Aquaman pilot in HD? I know that it's been available on XBLM in HD for some time, but I don't have a 360.

I have to give big ups to Microsoft/Toshiba.

Them buying out Paramount's support has saved us from Michael Bay directing another Transformer's movie.

"TRANSFORMERS! Roll out and product place!!"

I'm the one with 80-ish. Can't remember them all off the top of my head, and there's still 15-20 I haven't watched yet, with 3 or 4 of those being movies I've never seen. Thus far, my only disappointment is "Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow". I wanted to see it in the theater but never did, and figured it would look great in HD (it does, but is a tad soft). But the movie sucks, unfortunately. A few favorites:

Batman Begins
Planet Earth
Fearless
V for Vendetta
The Searchers
Adventures of Robin Hood
Blood Diamond
Breach
The Big Lebowski
A Scanner Darkly
Children of Men
12 Monkeys
The Thing
Serenity
Unforgiven
Bourne Supremacy

I haven't bought much lately (7 titles since April) because of recent expenses (baby, chiropractor, new receiver). Hopefully will get back into the swing of things by the end of September because I've missed out on a lot of movies I'm interested in (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, Bourne Identity, Shooter, Darkman, Scent of a Woman) and I'll miss out on a few more upcoming ones (Dawn of the Dead, Disturbia, Face/Off, etc) in the next month or so. I couldn't resist Heroes, though, and I did preorder the Blade Runner Collection in case they come to their senses and raise the price :)

So what's the deal? We put that question to the source for all things Spielberg -- his longtime spokesman and DreamWorks marketing exec Marvin Levy. Speaking exclusively with High-Def Digest, Levy confirmed Spielberg's active support of Blu-ray with the selection of 'Close Encounters' for his next-gen debut.

"It was important to Steven that if any of his films were to be released [first] on high-definition, that it would be a classic," said Levy. "Steven is big supporter of Blu-ray, and chose 'Close Encounters' to be the first of his films on either format."

Spielberg approved the new high-def transfer made for the film, and among the Blu-ray's supplements is a new introduction recorded by the director specifically for the release, as well as a storyboard comparison.

Levy further clarified the Paramount/DreamWorks press release, saying that "...his movies, like 'Saving Private Ryan' and 'War of the Worlds,' are not included in that deal. They are not exclusive to HD DVD, nor [are they] planned for that format at this time.'"

Levy went on emphasize that beyond 'Close Encounters,' Spielberg has no other films in the high-def pipeline on either format. "At this moment, there are no plans for something further [on either format]. Anything in the future will be decided on a title-by-title basis. There certainly won't be more titles in 2007."

Wasn't Spielberg also one of the driving forces behind DIVX? ;)
and I did preorder the Blade Runner Collection in case they come to their senses and raise the price :)
Hehe, same.

The only thing I find unusual about the Spielberg is that he has a less than stellar relationship with Columbia (and by extension Sony). I know that he certainly did not have any formal control over his movie when he made Close Encounters. Sure, he could have made some phone calls and put pressure on Sony to not release it...but legally they could still without his blessing. So he probably just hopped on board and offered up some help. He's going to make a killing on it. It and Sleeping Beauty are going to be the two Blu-ray discs I'll own long before I even buy the player.

His working relationship with Universal is supposed to be excellent, which is one of the reasons I think they were so quickly to apologize for announcing Jaws and Jurrassic Park without his formal blessing. If he ever gets around to releasing his movies in HiDef (sans alterations), we'll be in for a treat...regardless of format.

Like all the directors, I doubt he has a preference. The money he earns from a Blu-ray release is just as green as the money from an HD DVD release. He realizes this whole thing is political and probably wants to avoid burning bridges.

I own 16 HD DVD movies (About 24 as of tomorrow). I'll buy it on HD DVD if 1) I can get it cheap enough 2) There's a noticible difference between the standard release and HD visuals 3) more content or 4) I skipped out buying it on DVD format.

I won't go out buy copies of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation because I'm trying to stick it to Sony and their format. That's just insane. But I won't skip out on a high definition release like Hot Fuzz because I don't want to pay an extra $5 (Technically $10, but with my wife's discount its about $5). Even with the Paramount announcement, I'm not going to go out and pick up Blades of Glory just because its going to be HD DVD only.

I will. I was on the fence about buying it, but because of the announcement, its my way of saying 'Thanks'. I hope to also thank them by buying tons of Blu-ray copies that leak out and ebay them...

I'm not going to lie, I definitely told me wife to save me a copy next week. But after getting a rest...I don't really feel like buying it as a thank you movie.

Grease will end up being my thank you movie, if it ever shows up.

Any word on whether current Blu-ray movies released by paramount will be pulled from shelves? I read they canceled the sku's for upcoming release, just wondering if they are going to pull the older releases. I know my wife's Best Buy does their send backs on Wednesday (not sure if its a national thing or not), so I'll ask to check if they are pulling them from the shelf.

If I had to venture a guess, I'd wager no.

Unless Paramount threatened a lawsuit if these movies were sold to the public, it'd be in a retail store's best interest to earn the full sale price instead of the pittance they'd get for returning the product.

It'll be like a clearance sale, I suppose, once its gone...its gone. Or until the exclusivity deals runs out.
http://movies.ign.com/articles/814/814159p1.html

Yeah, but it's a drop in the bucket compared to DVD sales.

Let's be super nice and say that Transformers is going to sell on par with 300, they are going to miss out on 200,000 sales and still sell 100,000 copies. Well the grande sized check Paramount got should cover the 200,000 sales they missed out on plus just about everything else they sell because honastly the HD market isn't a cash cow yet.

DVD sales on the other hand are going to be in the millions.

For him to flip his shit over 200,000 copies (which he could have easily made up for by asking for a raise to do Transformers 2 or you know the box office/DVD sales of Transformers 2), he's going to walk away? What a retard.

my bad only scanned a page back (and I missed it) lol
No problem. Though, I will say that the fact it's gotten as much press is why the post has sorta disappeared. I think he's realized what he said and what problems it could caused and removed it till further notice.
Actually he had Nelson do some damage control: http://www.shootfortheedit.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2300
After damage control the statement looks more like the same thing Bay originally said, but run through the dishwasher. The only thing that looks like it has changed is his promise to not work on Transformers 2; that was a major league speed flip-flop.

Now, all of you people who seem to live in a world where you can *LOVE* the Transformers movie and *HATE* Michael Bay, you can rest easy and remain anxious all at once. Again. ;)

Josh,

Thank you for your email. I will answer your questions as best I can.

1 - As far as we can tell here in marketing, this exclusive deal could last as long as 18 months. I spoke to my director earlier today and even she does not have all the details of this agreement. She did mention we have a lot of clauses which would allow us to release certain films on Blu-ray during this time period.

2 - I cannot comment on this question.

3 - Right now it looks like all announced Blu-ray titles will be or have been canceled. As I mentioned before you still may see some Blu-ray releases in the next 18 months though. I can not get in to the details of that possibility though.

4 - Actually we were as surprised as everyone else today when we found out about agreement with HD-DVD. We found out when we arrived to work today and there had been no rumors at all circulating. I think it surprised us all because we have been working on producing and marketing Blu-ray versions of films such Blades, Face/Off, Top Gun, etc. through the end of last week. I can tell you we have received many calls today from various talent and certain directors voicing their displeasure with this decision. We even had VP's of other studios calling in from what I hear. I have never seen this type of atmosphere in the office. In a way we were on damage control throughout the day. That is really all I can tell you for now.

Take care Josh!

XXXXXX,

I have a couple of questions regarding you guys going HD-DVD exclusive today. As you can imagine it was a big surprise to many of us.

1. Is this exclusivity indefinite or for a limited time frame?

2. The rumor circulating AVS is that Microsoft has contributed money to Paramount to go exclusive. Is this true?

3. Will certain announced movies still be released on Blu-ray? What about Transformers & Indiana Jones?

4. How long have you or your department known that this deal was being negotiated?

Thanks!

~Josh

To me the Paramount annoucnement sucks, it takes HD optical further away from being the standard by increasing the probabilty of have two formats. Regardless of which format wins, I always have and always will want one format to have all movies be it HD DVD or Blu-ray.

Ultimately though, I think Blu-ray still wins it in the long run. 18 months of Paramount being HD DVD exclusive isn't enough to revitalize the entire format..... now if they could get Warner Bros on the other hand. Personally, it doesn't impact me at all, Transformers is the only title I was interested in I don't care for any other annouced Paramount flick. Everything else I'll go for with upscaled DVD, and spend my time watching the many Blu-ray exclusives coming out this holiday season especially with Fox releasing so many titles.
