Nah, that's just some new and old info from yesterday.

I don't expect Warner to choose a side until after the holidays.
Should be interesting though
Either way, All that saying is that K-mart will only be carrying HD-DVD stand alones, which is nothing newsworthy. But ZOMG HD-DVD will win now. :)
Funny, my K-Mart just put in a nice 4 foot Blu-Ray section, no HD-DVD's anywhere. Odd that they'd go exclusive with the players but exclusive on the other format's movies.

just noticed in my local BJ's a big Blu-ray display in the dvd section...not bad prices but not great either

Spiderman set-62.99
the boxsets with 4 diff movies was 59.99 and most other movies were either $27.99 or 19.99...

no sign of HD-DVD though

According to the SD link, which links to an AVS post by a supposed Walmart manager. He claims that this Friday, when they'll have their "secret" sale that's being advertised all over, they'll have the A2's for only $99. This is in addition to select HD DVD's being $15, the Acer laptop for $380 something, and the 50" Sanyo plasma for $999. Then again, he does only have one post under his belt.

If this is true I'll be laughing my ass off when HD DVD crushes BR sales numbers for the week.

For the week Spiderman came out?

If y'all didn't succeed with Transformers, I think it's high time to abandon this "beating" idea, and instead try to work towards narrowing the gap.

You mean a sequel that didn't live up to the previous one's? Also of note is the two included with the trilogy are barebones. Can we say ripoff? Especially in the price of 3 by itself.

i just bought my first three blu rays

halloween, day of the dead, dawn of the dead

horrible quality

starz really dropped the ball on them :(

Spidey 3 costs just as much as Transformers. 30 extra bucks for 2 movies in HD is pretty fair IMO. Then again I am like dallow and don't care for special features all that much.

Also quality of the feature has nothing to do with how many sales it has.

I agree. I could really care less about the special features. The one thing I did require about the trilogy (Spiderman 2 and Spiderman 2.1) are both included so I'm happy.

Really? I just bought Halloween and I thought the PQ was pretty good. Although, I rented Dawn of the Dead and I definetly agree about that, the PQ was kinda weak.

Since when did the quality of a movie affect sales? It seems like people will buy/watch anything that has well known actors, enough hype, and proper marketing. Just take a look at some of the 'blockbusters' for the past few years.
Wasn't Motorstorm,Lair & Warhawk supposed to change the tides of the system war, instead of helping maintain the status quo and sending PS3 fans on a quest to find yet another holy grail in the form of "Heaveny Sword"?

I don't think Warner would make a drastic decision like that now , when they can use Spiderman 3 as a litmus test .
You're forgetting that the typical Sony fanboy response is "Just Wait!!!!"
Well, its been a year, and these are the top titles....
But...JUST WAIT!!! MGS4 will sell, like, 8 million PS3s!!! Just Wait!!!!

I guess BB moved a couple of 360 addons last week. Heroes was the #2 selling HD DVD, two months after its last appearance on the top 10.

You're nuts!
Halloween and Day were pretty damn good for movies that are 25+ years old.
Dawn...eh. Not BAD, but could have been better (that 'smearing' is pretty bad though)

I would like to know more about this 50' Plasma. If it's a secret sale, then it probably won't do so hot.

But, it sounds more like a clearance sale than anything else.
..and I'll be pulling a Gizmogc, by saying "it's quite sad HD-DVD has to drop their price to $99 just to gain sales".
Nope, that's pretty damn awesome if true...but its a 5 hour sale, not a permanent price (if true, seems VERY doubtful).

Edit: Holy SHIT it IS true!!!! I work, damnit!

Hmm...I'll just go buy one tomorrow and price match later in the day....
Nope, that's pretty damn awesome if true...but its a 5 hour sale, not a permanent price (if true, seems VERY doubtful).
How is it awesome? Any sort of discount from companies that helps them gain marketshare is sad, regardless of how beneficial it is to consumers, right? Getting a BD movie free when you buy one was sad, and that was just a $20-$25 discount. This $100 discount is extremely sad.
Walmart advertises HD DVD players on TV:

Go to the very end of the video for commercial.

$99 HD DVD players....holly crap...I might get one.

EDIT: Confirmed
http://holiday.ri-walmart.com/?sect...y&povid=cat14503-env15844-module117144-lLink1
Yea, actually just saw an ad not too long ago. Caught my attention, since I believe its the first time I've seen an actual player advertised on TV (for both BD/HD). In all seriousness though, Holy crap at the $99 HD-DVD player. To think these things were about $500 a year ago. Guess the format war does have its benefits. I think I'm at a point where, the only way I'd get HD-DVDs is with a combo player. It really seems like it will be a two format gen, so I'll wait it out and get a combo player sometime down the road.

With the A2 being $99 at Wal-Mart Friday...and if all stores sell out (which I'm sure they will) that just makes 60,000+ new HD DVD owners in ONE day. Holy shit.
With $15 titles...if each person buys 1 or 2 thats 120k titles sold in ONE DAY.
Of course Nielsen does not count Wal-Mart...

Not if Wal-Mart is eating the $100 discount. That's there choice.
We know the BDA/studios ate all the the lost revenue from the BOGO sales

Let's hope these players don't come with the 5 free movies, though. How sad would that be?

They do, by mail, just like your good friends at the BDA offer with every Blu-ray/PS3 sold.

Which is, of course, 1/150th as sad as the Paramount bribe, seeing as how the revenues lost from the BOGO amounted to roughly $1 million. So, by your logic, buying Paramount's exclusivity is 150 times as sad, no?

Interesting maneuver on WM's part. I don't think it will amount to all that much, personally (which is different from saying they won't sell at that price, since they certainly will). Between this and the sub-$200 standalones, it seems the war is at this point, centered around reacting to the $400 PS3 that's coming on Friday.

The only other comment I'll make right now is this: if you think that this is anything but the beginning of a massive, massive holiday battle (i.e., that deals won't continue to amaze your eyes and harm your pocketbook), you're not paying attention. This winter is gonna get NASTY, since HD DVD needs to show signs of survival. It's critical for them, while BR can weather such losses (irrespective of studio allegiances, of course).

Had I not bought many BRs over the past week, even I may have been coerced to go to WM Friday morning. Truth be told, there's not enough to sell me on at this point, and I really don't need another thing to plug into the TV. Besides, unlike Gizmo, I'm not interested in prolonging this war and more interested in seeing all movies released on BR. I can do a tiny part by not buying HD DVD movies.

EDIT: I just noticed that Heroes season 1 is selling for under $30 (before shipping) on eBay rather regularly. How's that for attach rate?
They do, by mail, just like your good friends at the BDA offer with every Blu-ray/PS3 sold.
Ouch.. how sad. I don't mind the free movies as I never really thought of discounts as 'sad'. I believe it was you who was looking at every discount as a 'sad' way to gain market share, rather than benefiting off of them like the rest of us.
Let's hope these players don't come with the 5 free movies, though. How sad would that be?
They do, actually. Every model number of the A2 (HD-A2, HD-A2W, HD-D2, HD-A2C) are all explicitly included in the 5-free promotion. These will likely be HD-A2Ws, since that's the Wal-Mart specific SKU.

Heh, I figured. Was just mocking Gizmogc hypocrisy.

I couldn't give a shit about Paramount being paid or not, its only an issue for the BDA only people who cry 'foul!'. HD DVD has another studio that Blu-ray does not. Sucks for BDA only people.

Its amazing, 2 out of the 5 deals this Friday at Wal-Mart are HD DVD. No Blu-ray at all...interesting. I'm sure Target will have an awesome sale...BDP-300 for only $399.99! What a value for an obsolete player!

Heroes is selling for that price because so many people bought the 360 AO last week at Best Buy and got it for free (and the glitch giving away 2 other boxsets for the same price). Many people are selling the extra stuff and keeping the AO as it would essentially be free if they sold the boxsets for decent money. Now the market is FLOODED with these.
I just noticed that Heroes season 1 is selling for under $30 (before shipping) on eBay rather regularly.
Like I mentioned before, it's probably FW/SD guys who abused the BB 360 add-on deal last week.
Heh, I figured. Was just mocking Gizmogc hypocrisy.
Both formats offer 5 free by mail. Not sure I get what you're trying to say. Hell, its not like Sony is giving away Spider-Man 3 with their Playstation 3, which is suppose to a video game system. Oh wait...
Like I mentioned before, it's probably FW/SD guys who abused the BB 360 add-on deal last week.
Look around this forum, AVS, DVDTalk etc. EVERYONE is trying to sell Heroes, Planet Earth, Sopranos, Matrix, Mission Impossible Trilogy etc. at $50-$60. A lot of people got in this deal and are trying to make the AO "free" to them by selling the extras.

I'm just saying that your consideration of what the HDG and BDA are doing, and labeling what one does with their promotional money (or other actions that intentionally cut revenue) as "sad" came down on the BR end *exclusively*, when in reality they got more discs in peoples' hands, and at a cost that was 0.66% of what HDG spent. I don't recall you calling that "sad," even if it was 15000% greater than what BDA ate up. ;)

I'm aware of the *why* - but still find it funny that people seem to have looked at the deal as a place to take BB to the cleaners and sell off the items a la carte, rather than as an investment.

Maybe some of the people thought they could sell these $60-$90 boxsets for near retail and use that money to buy other movies?

Which, if they've ever been on eBay before, should goddamn know jolly well that the price will sink due to hundreds of other cats doing the same thing.

As for your $15 HD movies, it's your choice of *drumroll*
12 Monkeys
Blood Diamond
The Big Lebowski

You get to choose from THREE! WHOOPIE DOO! HD DVD IS GONNA WIN THIS WEEK!

WRONG. Full list is...

Clerks 2
Lucky # S7even
Pulse
Failure to Launch
4 Brothers
Italian Job
Sleepy Hollow
Casino
12 Monkeys
Backdraft
Big Lebowski
Sea Biscuit
Alexander Revisted
Blood Diamond
Full Metal Jacket
The Last Samurai
Swordfish

And NONE of these titles count for the Nielsens either.

Actually the internal list (provided by a walmart manager on AVS) is a bit longer:

Clerks 2
Lucky # Sleven
Pulse
Failure to Launch
4 Brothers
Italian Job
Sleepy Hollow
Casino
12 Monkeys
Backdraft
Big Lebowski
Sea Biscuit
Alexander Revisted
Blood Diamond
Full Metal Jacket
The Last Samurai
Swordfish
Unforgiven

Edit: LOL simultaneous postage.

For some laughs, check out the Blu-ray.com forum.

The "Blu-Bloods" as they like to call themselves are going NUTS. The $99 player posts are getting delete so damn fast.

I'm not sure it's all that funny. They know it's a substantial threat to their preferred format. I'm seeing more panic than actual spinning of facts (something you could learn a thing or two about), as they know that this is the real deal.

Many of them have been clamoring for ages to reduce the price of BR players, and for a good reason. Now they simply have a better reason.
