Mass Effect - Gen. Discussion & Info - Pinnacle Station DLC Now Available 400pts

I got this game for 30 bucks a year ago. I'd say for the most part it was worth it, but for games like these you need to have time to play...only complaint in the whole game was the perversion they just had to include, but at least it was avoidable. If the second one contains such things, I won't be buying....especially if its unavoidable.

Prude?

If by 'perversion' he/she meant some of the speech options/situations made available while pursuing a romantic relationship with one of your shipmates then LOL. To each their own I suppose. I thought if anything they could have used a little more depth though for the most part were done with reasonable taste.

For example, the part with involving the asari -- consort or something-- towards the beginning of the game could get on the perverted side. I was mashing through buttons and suddenly was disgusted to see such material in my video game. Needless to say, I fully made sure to avoid getting the pervert achievement worth 10 points.

LOL! @ "pervert achievement."

Wow. Well... again... to each his or her own. Asari are wildly known as both a powerful and intelligent yet unmistakably sensuous alien race and the game does a solid job of informing (or forewarning in your case...) you via text. Unless you weren't paying attention I can't imagine why her mildly suggestive body language managed to shock and alarm you. Hell... if you didn't get the 411 from the conversation with the soldiers in the bar then her assistant at the front desk was more than happy to inform you of her coworkers and their variety of 'services'.

Besides as you pointed out this 'perversion' is of the optional persuasion and the only way you could truly engage in PG-13 sexual relations with that gorgeous blueberry bombshell is if you took the Renegade approach (which hilariously enough proves once again nice guys finish last... even in a damn video game, haha).

The second ME book is very good, for any of you considering picking it up. If you enjoyed the first one I don't see any reason you wouldn't enjoy this one too, although it does have very little to do with the game itself. I'd definitely read it if you are interested in the Quarians, as the book delves pretty deeply into their culture and way of life.

Ugh... why did you mention THAT WONDROUS INTERESTING ALIEN RACE!?

I was already planning on buying all of the books but now you've officially kicked my lazy ass purchasing habits into high gear. I thank you. :D

To be blunt, how old are you? You write like someone who is quite mature, but your attitude reminds me of someone who is 12 going "Ewwwww cooties"
Uh...pervert achievement? Come on. Let's not exaggerate. What...are sexual relationships icky?
Those that don't involve marriage are, yes. I know it's still a game, so I'm not going to fight this like people are making life decisions or something cause it's nowhere even close to something like that...and really shouldn't even be mentioned in the same paragraph together. But, at least that first statement gives you an idea of where I'm coming from and what my morals are. I mean, I do play shooters, which displays acts that are obviously for the most part wrong also, so I wouldn't judge people by their achievements or anything, lol. There's just two things I can't stand in video games: This form of perversion, and the use of God's name in vain. If it can be avoided, then I'll avoid it when I play or just sell the game off quickly if it includes such content.

Wow this game sure sounds fun...can we move on?

I just picked up the 2 disc version, is it longer than Bioshock? I'm trying to figure out which one to play first (I know I'm behind the times)

Hard to say. I still haven't beat Bioshock but ME's main story is about 8 - 15 hour long ride game depending on your style of play. Otherwise I've easily gotten 35 - 40 hours out of it just focusing on completing nearly every side quest I came across without a guide. Then again I like to take my time through games I enjoy or scare the utter crap out of me. ;'(

Honestly I'd start Bioshock if you aren't sure you'll have the time to dedicate to ME due to its straight forward pick up and play design. Just don't be surprised if you chuck Mass Effect on the backburner since Shock's storyline and environment is equally immersive.

As for Spade, I honestly respect their opinion and hope they'll be more selective in the future.

And don't forget that, if you dig achievements, you'll need to play Mass Effect 3 times to get them all, so that also adds some value to it.

I'm on my third playthrough already. I'd recommend playing first as a Renegade, than as a Paragon, and finally as a Jerk - just punch people whenever you get the chance! ;)

In the end though, most RPGs are as big as you want them to be: they can be finished pretty quickly if you just focus on the main storyline, or extremely time consuming if you trully want to experience it all.

I'd also say if you're planning on playing it more than once to also choose the extremes at first (i.e. engineer, biotic, soldier), that way on the subsequent playthroughs it'll feel a lot fresher :D (Well it did for me anyways...)

Ditto. I'm currently on my my fifth play through with a female Engineer on Hardcore. Oh my holy goodness was leveling up challenging. ;\ It seems like Infiltrator is the best of both worlds with a Bastion/Adept (Max Stasis is too good) / Nemesis/Vanguard (You feel like a damn superhero with maxed biotics) running a close second depending on your style of play.

I will say it's becoming increasingly difficult for me to start a new playthrough without Shotgun as my bonus talent. I can never get enough of killing Geth from long range in less than three shots with the right mods + stat allocation.

I'm going for the lv 60 achievement and I've done the game 3 or 4 times now. I don't know why but it never gets old lol. Really that whole alien sex thing was over discussed. You could see more in a HBO show these days, lighten up.

Yeah, I thought the Quarians might interest you. :)

Just don't expect any of them in the first book, although that is absolutely worth a read too (and definitely before the second one).

And I can also vouch for Drew Karpyshyn's Star Wars stuff too (or at least the first book, haven't gotten around to the second one yet) and you don't even have to be a Star Wars nerd to enjoy it, as chronologically they take place looong before any of the other Star Wars books.

Hey, it's just my opinion. You can see that kind of crap in practically any movie and many shows these days, which is precisely why I don't watch them. This was the first game I had bought which contained such content, so I've been much more wary to observe the back of the box or check online for what mature content a game actually holds before deciding on a purchase. Didn't think I'd have to defend such a mild comment again though...

About the game though...I had played the game offline, and uploaded my profile onto another persons 360, and then most of them were gone for the game. This was awhile ago, but I was wondering if there was some easy way to get them back. I know for a few games if you load at a particular point the achievements pop back.

I don't get why people are so...close-minded about sex. It's one of the most natural things in life, yet it's treated as a taboo in some places, especially the US. Sad...

Y'know, sex IN MARRIAGE is perfectly fine and was made for a man and a woman to enjoy IN MARRIAGE. I have nothing wrong with it. I really don't even want to discuss this here, cause I know 99% of the people on this forum will disagree with me and eventually it'll lead to long arguments like it always does. And btw, I'm talking about real life here. Video games are a different ballgame, and the boundaries on what is actually acceptable isn't always fully clear in video games, so I actually don't really care about what games people play exactly. I just stated my opinion on what I disliked about the game, and look how it unfolded .

Here's the thing. You're saying it's only okay in marriage, and yet, wouldn't the first people have done it without marriage just fine? Marriage is an idea created by man to impose rules upon life, and was probably created hundreds, if not more, years after humans started having sex and reproducing. Would you feel sex was wrong had marriage never been created? Animals have sex all the time. Are you trying to say that it's wrong? You want species to die out because the animals don't marry?

EDIT: Hmm, I propose that we move this discussion elsewhere and continue it, as it is pretty interesting.

Also, to stay on topic, I've been working through my 5th playthrough. Finally gonna hit level 60 this time methinks.

Don't give me that marriage bullshit, i don't preach to you or others about my beliefs do I? No, i don't. I've been with my girlfriend for over 5 years (and i'm only 22), i've been faithful, and yes, we have sex. It's good, i like it, and i'm going to do it again...and again...and again. God can suck it for all i care, he should have taught Adam and Eve better ;)

EDIT: what YodaEXE said about the concept of marriage :)

EDIT2: on-topic, i have the Platinum Hits version, once i beat army of two (this weekend perhaps?) i plan on starting up my second playthrough sometime next week, i'd like to try the Hard this time..it took me until the final boss fight in my first playthrough to realize while in the skills menu i had to use the analog stick to aim at the enemy i wanted to use a skill on, d'oh.

I just finished a second playthrough and used Tali and Ashley as my squadmates for the entire game (except where not possible) and it did not give me the achievements for doing so. On my first playthrough I did the same with Garrus and Wrex and only got the Turian ally achievement. Anyone else have this problem? I guess I will just start a third playthrough on insane and just use whomever I want.

Those achievements carry over to play throughs. Just use Tali, Ashley and Wrex in your third one until you get the achievements for them. You should get them pretty early on. Have to do a set number of missions with each as an ally--and it's a pretty high number had to do a lot of sidequests etc. to get them.

I recommend this link @ Gamefaqs : http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/xbox360/file/930279/50960 . Just check the part that says "Asari Ally".

Basically, you should avoid doing any sidequests until you get the squadmates you'll use to get the achievements, and then use them to do the sidequests.

The reason you only got one achievement is because each squad member has to complete their own specific amount of side quest assignments and participate in main storyline missions.

Conveniently enough they leave the player to figure it out on their own. ;\

Ashley "Don't I Remind You Of Your Ex?" Williams - 15 Main Story Missions and 50 Assignments to complete.

Kaidan "Is This Awkward Yet? I Could Make It Awkward You Know. Just Give Me A Chance!" Alenko - 15 Main Story Missions and 42 Assignments to complete.

Urdnot "If Only MacGuyver Were A Bounty Hunter... In Space!" Wrex - 15 Main Story Missions and 41 Assignments to complete.

Garrus "Itching To Follow In A Certain Sith Lord's Footsteps" Vakarian - 15 Main Story Missions and 51 Assignments to complete.

Tali'Zorah "Fresher Than Photosynthesis" nar Rayya - 15 Main Story Missions and 46 Assignments to complete.

Liara "The Every Man's Other Woman" T'soni - 13 Missions and 51 Assignments to complete.

Thank you ME Wiki! I love you.

I love that Garrus was the Bad Cop. He was always like, "Yeah! Let's just kill 'em!" and then my paragon Shepard would straighten him out. I'd like to see some new squadmates in ME2, but if they have to reuse one I hope it's him.

Lol, great descriptions.

The NPC that I liked the most were both Wrex and Tali. The others, I didn't really care much for them. But, I do like the fact that, at least according to the Mass Effect manual, Ashley was born in Brazil ; ) .

One thing they HAVE to do in the next Mass Effect is have some pigmy salarian called "Jan Jansen" who is a great inventor and strangely found of turnips. Man, if they made this character a DLC, I'd pay for it!

Yea the ally achievements suck but I guess they're there for the hardcore. I believe I only got the soldier one. I'm using Wrex and Garrus in my current playthrough, we make a good group.

Haha, thanks. I can't even begin to tell you how excruciating it was forcing myself to play side by side with Kaiden for the entire game. Ugh. No disrespect to his VA (given the circumstances I think he did a bang up job assuming he was forced to voice him in such an subtle yet obnoxious manner) but oh my goodness I doubt even Tara Strong, Steven Blum or Phil LaMarr could have made the character bearable for me.

A picture perfect example of a nice intelligent though thoroughly stale kind of guy who for the life of him couldn't woo a plastic plant to save his life. Completely transparent. The guy people instinctually ignore and generally only invite to parties as a designated driver, you know? Maybe that's why I just don't LIKE him. Although they managed to flesh him out... it still seems like they had an extra spot to fill and just decided to throw him in there for the hell of it.

Everyone else hit the mark dead on and were pretty damn organic. If you couldn't relate to some aspect of their personalities then you surely knew of someone in your social circle that fit the mold, but him? Cardboard. If you knew of someone like him you probably wouldn't WANT to remember them. Unfortunately I've known plenty... so... it just wasn't working for me.

Honestly... half of the time it wasn't even necessarily his script or a pinpointable line of blue cheese (although there were many... believe me) to blame, but rather the nauesatingly psuedo-nonchalant delivery behind it. Even his face annoys the utter hell out of me. I found myself wishing there were an option to tell him to shut the hell up whether or not he had planned to make a statement. After five different runs of this game he STILL remains the only person I glance at and think to myself "Why are you here?"

Everyone complains about how awkward Williams spouting out poetry was but have they actually subjected themselves to an Alenko play through? ...Seriously. I don't hate the guy... I just... ugh. You almost want to help him fit in... somewhere despite the sinking feeling in your gut that deep down your guidance will probably fall on deaf ears and you'll feel worse in the long run for failing.

I felt pretty much the same way. Since he comes along to Eden Prime I figured he was just a redshirt type of character (especially considering
Jenkins eats it immediately
), but then when he tags along on the Citadel I was like WTF? That guy's still here?

It was also pretty funny (yet fitting) that he had the same voiceover actor as Carth from KOTOR, since they're both kind of their games' generic white male characters. Carth was slightly more interesting, though.

I never planned on "preaching" to anyone. I said my opinion and it got people interested on the topic and it just went from there. (Talking to gamer and yoda from here on in response). I never was talking, or meant to, talk directly to anyone here. I was just stating my opinion, which yes, comes from the Bible, since that is God's word, so why wouldn't I use it to illustrate my opinion? Marriage isn't an idea created by man at all, it's created by God and was created in the beginning of time. Just read Genesis 2:23-24. Anyway, to gamer, I'm not judging anyone here at all so don't take it personally by any means. I didn't say anything specifically about your life or anything. God is the judge......so if you disagree with that then read it (The Bible) or take it up with him. And you shouldn't start using derogatory terms. These guidelines are to make life better and more abundant, not worse or more difficult. People ultimately have to make their own decision, God can only direct it. But whatever, we can discuss this elsewhere if people like...
Again though, this was supposed to be about video games... A lot different than real life

EDIT: BTW about the ally achievements I think I got them for 4 characters. Sadly all the achievements I got for em were wiped out after the upload to another console, and I was so close to getting the ally achievements for the asari also

Spades, I think the reason people jumped on you is because you started out throwing words like "perverted" around. If you had just said something like, "I didn't appreciate the sexual content of the story" I doubt you would have drawn as much attention.

On topic, I don't think I really disliked Kaidan as much as everyone else but man was he boring. You would think somewhere along the line they would have realized how bland he was--I guess his backstory was supposed to spice him up but he needed more than that. I thought Liara was pretty boring too, which I think had a lot to do with her voice-acting. Tali was far and away my favorite--I wouldn't have thought that a character whose face was covered the entire game could be so...cute.

Ha, I once considered letting Kaiden live and sacrificing Ashley but then I got worried that I might see his naked ass instead of Ashley's. And yes he is a boring character making an already easy decision even easier.

Spolier alert dude, spoiler alert. Please edit it ;).

sorry for re-bumping this thread but yesterday I picked the platinum edition up since it had the DLC on it. Had this game before but traded it in...

I did install it on my harddrive and played it but it seems really laggy and choppy when I'm running around more so than if I played in on the Disc anybody else notice that?

Also how was the DLC that was available?

The DLC is awesome dude, not everyday can you stop a falling asteroid from crashing into a planet. The combat area at the end of the DLC is also pretty cool followed by a typical infamous Mass Effect decision.

Game runs much smoother with it installed. Have you tried clearing your cache? I also noticed, and this may just be a rare case for me, but i have a 120GB HDD and the more games i have installed, the laggier my Dashboard is...

I started playing this again, got my first character at level 46 so i'm trying to get him up a little and i've started a second character thats Adept at level 7 at the moment.

If you get your first character up to level 50 and get the achievement for doing so I am pretty sure you get an experience bonus of 10% even with new characters, so it might be worth your time play a little more with your first character.

you quoted it and everyone can still see it after he spoiler tagged it, genius

Finally got Lvl 60 with my first character, haven't been playing constantly but on and off again for a long time. Prob my 3rd or 4th playthrough. I'm so happy I got the Extreme Power Gamer and Paragon achievements. I still need the hardcore, insane playthroughs and hell I might do it all over again since I need the tech and bionic achievements as well. Coming back to this game from a while ago actually made some parts feel fresh again haha.
