Metal Gear Solid 4 & Metal Gear Online - 8/6: Rumored Trophy Update Out Now? Rumor!
I don't bother with grabs, I just use the stun knife as it's an instant knockout
True. But I don't like just doing, Stun Knife + Headshots all the time.

And how do you grab people and hold them on the floor? And what is the use to that?

Well it's more of a single player move. Basically, you grab someone, then crouch, then I forget the next button press. It's a sleeper hold that'll put your target to sleep.

In multiplayer, players who are asleep take a lot longer to get up than simply being killed. However, I'm not sure if it takes longer for people who are knocked out (stars above their head) or sleeping (Zs above their head) to become conscious.

However, the move takes so long, and the maps are so small, and the SOP system works so well that you rarely have the chance to use the move.

My biggest problem with playing snake is that the inventory selection system just doesn't work for an online game. To truly be able to use Snake, you have to quickly switch between his arsenal as situations arise. In single player, the classic scrolling menu works because the game pauses while you're selecting the next item. In multiplayer, if you don't have the exact item set on your quick switch options you're dead. Even worse, there's no option to set a quick switch item/weapon set just for when you're playing Snake.

Anyone know if you can Hold Up and enemy player just by aiming at them at close range? I saw in a screenshot of someone with their hands up, but I don't know if it's in game or not.

It's not messed up, it's one great way to do it. You get one shot to take down as many guys as you can before you die. If you're any good, you can last awhile regardless of how much health you have left and if you're not, you'll get the chance to get back at those that are better than you. It at least makes me more cautious when I head out to make sure I'm aware of my surroundings so I don't get ambushed or caught off-guard.

Regenerating doesn't really make sense in the MGS universe, I don't think, though I wouldn't mind if the game allowed you to refill your health bar once when you're alive at the base. I could also see rations working if they're rare (in that you'll never have more than one and they won't just appear in front of you when you're low on health) and you actually have to deal with an animation of a few seconds while your character opens and eats the ration to make it more important to be in a safe spot to get back your health. Something where it's doesn't emphasize wussing out of skirmishes just to get your health back and turn the tide of that fight in a split second, like regenerating or having health packs all around the level.

Edit: Yes, you can hold up people as Snake. It's not hard if you're hiding near high-traffic areas, as you'll see someone stop and hold their arms up, which you can then frisk them and take their dog tag. What weapons/items you're given as Snake works fine, as it is all you need to play the part you're given (the outsider observing a battle that can't get in the middle of the fight) if/once you know what you're doing.

Not to be rude or anything but is it necessary for you to defend your stance/put down everyone else's opinions about the game? We get it, you think it is awesome, but others may feel it needs tweaking.

Who, me? I'm not putting down anybody's opinions, just offering up counterpoints to things people think are wrong with the game to facilitate discussion about the game. If it comes off that way, I apologize, but that's not what I intended.

I don't think FT can be any more polite with his disagreements.

I was wrong earlier, shotgun is still the cheapest shit ever. People have just not been using it much, for whatever reason. It's still essentially a one-hit kill in that once you're hit with it, you're down, and its easy to kill you when you're down. Stupid.

The shotgun is incredibly short ranged. Just be mindful of weapon ranges as you move about. A good player keeps note of what his weapon's intended fighting range is and tries to move so that any enemies he faces appear in that range bracket.

Thus, take corners wide, etc... Also, the slower firing rate on the shotgun means that it's easy for a teammate to take out the shotgunner if he knocks you down.

Agreed. Shotguns only work in close quarters and have awful reload time. On a map like GG, Shotguns are almost useless as they have zero range. At that point, you'd have to play a shotgun like you'd play CQC/knife.

Crouch, let go of R1, then push the left stick and R1 in a direction at the same time. The higher your CQC level, the faster you'll knock them out. CQC grabs are pretty useless in multi. The throwdown is the only useful one and you don't need CQC equipped to use it. You do need CQC 1 to use the Scanning plug in, but I don't think scanning stops working if you or the injected victim die.
And how do you grab people and hold them on the floor? And what is the use to that?
If people don't have SOP enabled, it lowers your vertical profile making you harder to spot but in my experience, people always see you.

My biggest problem with playing snake is that the inventory selection system just doesn't work for an online game.

I agree somewhat. While it would be nice to be able to switch between the four useful weapons he has, chances are if you're seen by more than one person you'll be dead soon regardless of what you're using.

I don't bother with grabs, I just use the stun knife as it's an instant knockout

Snake's throw is an instant knockout, and it doesn't have a recharge time.

Seriously the health system is messed up. You get in a gun fight and you kill the guy but he manages to get a few shots off at you then you are low on health, and basically all you can do is either hide or die. Or maybe get the jump on someone.

I agree with Tanuki. I like that it forces you to be more careful or at the very least, get killed as often as you kill if you aren't. I think it's a more accurate reflection of your ability to win without being killed, versus your ability to win, and go hide/get health packs. I think it's the same reason why it shows you who killed you, so that if you were sniped, you know where the sniper is so you can force him to camp somewhere else. Any map I play on I always notice snipers never stay in one spot long because they tend to be killed if they do.

The throwdown is deadly. People used to use it all the time in the first MGO since that was the only CQC move, but I don't think anybody has done it on me.

If you're in a CQC situation, throw the guy down, maneuver so that he's facing the opposite way while in OTS mode, and pop an easy headshot. If the guy starts rolling, just be patient and pop him in the head. This is so quick and effective, but nobody uses it. I seriously cannot recall ever being killed by a guy that I threw down. Easy headshot every time.

Are you sure no one's done it to you? I remember playing with you a few times, and I do that to pretty much everyone unless of course they're on my team.

I've also killed about 5% (not a big number but better than nothing) of the guys that have thrown me down so it isn't foolproof.

Oh I'm sure you're right about it not being foolproof but its a hell of a lot better option than what some other guys do.

I don't ever remember playing with you espy :whistle2:# but I really want to check out your ninja skills :applause:

wow... just read the Official PS mag special on this game and I never realized that (huge spoilers... unless I'm slow)
the guy wearing sunglasses in the trailers and that isn't affected by the nano-tech is actually Johnny Sasaki... whoa! if it's true that this new character is the character for the next wave of metal gear games after 4, then this makes me superbly happier than I use to be.
very deserving if true.

I actually figured that out from the trailers because of the goofy way he acts. He isn't affected by the nano-tech problems because he's the only combat character in the game that doesn't have any. METAL GEAR JOHNNY.

There are four basic players online.
1. Sniper/camper
2. Headshot experts
3. CQC enthusiasts
4. People testing out everything

Most CQC people in the game are terrible, so you will kill most people doing what you said, except the CQC people that think stun knifing someone instead of grabbing them is better because they will most likely stun you the same time you grab them (happens to me a lot).

However, 99% of all players I throw in the game freak out when being CQCd and their first instinct is to try to get back up which means 95% of the time means they'll just die since they're taking bullet fire the whole time. I leveled my handgun to Level 3 this way.

Attacking while laying down, I think, is the best defense when being thrown. If the CQCer has a knife you're pretty much dead, but if they're lining up a headshot, you have a small chance of killing them.

Anyway, my ninja skills have been greatly exaggerated. As I've said, I usually die as much if not more than the number of kills I make. I mainly play this way because I find it impossible to headshot people.

Yea, are we going to have another MGO night before the beta is up. I haven't seen anybody else from the clan on for the past few days at all.

After putting enough time in, I think they need to change the sneaking mission, all it becomes is a team deathmatch with Snake as the odd man out doing whatever. For people who aren't playing as Snake treat it as a regular TDM since we don't see Snake or where he's going unless he's like right next to you. Kinda pointless since these matches always last a while and only a couple of people get to play as him. While the old sneaking mission had a new purpose for those playing as Snake or against him to prevent him from reaching the goal. It was short and quick and many people got a chance to play as Snake. A nice break from the usual TDM or Capture.

Also I perfer the old Capture style with just the frog and holding it at your base for ten seconds. With both the duck and frog it just isn't as fun and with a 30 second timer that doesn't seem to reset, might be wrong it's kinda boring since you only need to capture one and than hold it and make sure the other just isn't at their base.

Than finally, while SOP Destab is nice it should cost more than 5000 points, around 7500-10000 would make more since, than you would have to earn it and than can try to use it, as is, It doesn't take much skill to get enough points to earn it and people usually don't guard their spawn point since they're going after the bases and you kinda have to randomly find the guy who has the Destab.

Hi all! In the most recent Metal Gear Monday post, I mentioned that we were working on a Metal Gear Online Beta-related surprise this week. As the Beta nears its end this weekend, we are pleased to be able to offer a very special, one-time opportunity to the top ranking participants.

A select number of top clans will receive an invite to play the MGO Beta competitively against the Konami team. The invites will start going out tonight (Wednesday May 7, 2008) through tomorrow morning, via the MGO Beta in-game mail system, to the selected clan leaders. If you receive an invite, Konami will communicate with you regarding your entry status, steps to participate, and scheduling of the match should your clan be selected. Invites will be coming from me personally, my character, named simply, “Brandon”. Do not communicate with or provide any information to anyone else who may claim to be representing Konami.

The matches will take place tomorrow night Thursday May 8, 2008 starting at 7pm PST. If you qualify for entry, your clan will be given a time slot between 7pm PST and 9pm PST. We will also provide match details in advance. Matches will be 5v5, 5 on the Konami team, so if your clan has more than 5 members, you will need to select and coordinate who will be playing.

Please stay tuned to the MGO Beta site for all the latest news on this special MGO Beta Competition - psblog

Not a chance of it being us, but did you check FriskyTanuki?

Actually, we were selected. I got about 5 mails from them about it within a few minutes, so it seems like they weren't sure they sent it or not, I guess. Like it says in the quote above. We can have five people play against the MGO developers sometime between 7-9 PM PST, so we just have to wait for their response with a time slot. I'm definitely in, so we need to pick four more people that are available for 7-9 PM PST/10-12 PM EST and I'll let you guys know what's up when I get it.

I didn't play the old MGO but it looks like the new sneaking mission is reflective of how MGS4 Snake's role was (sneak by two armies) versus MGS3's Snake (1 man versus the Soviet Union). I do agree though that you rarely get to be snake, and sometimes the same person gets to be Snake twice before your turn in the rotation comes up.

I think the timer resets sometimes, but it's hard to tell what makes it reset. Also, only the frog or duck works for your own base, if you capture the enemy's totem, you'd be better off avoiding everyone instead of taking it back to your base to protect. When I get it, I run all over the map (which I find more fun than holding your own totem).

Most games I've played disable the SOP Destab, and even if people don't guard it, in a big multiplayer game, people die so often that they'll respawn their to kill you anyway. Plus only one person can carry it on a team at a time, and since it takes a primary weapon spot, it leaves you a little more vulnerable when carrying it.

I volunteer. =) How are we going to select the four remaining people, since you obviously get a spot?

That's awesome news! I'd love to volunteer but I'm no good and haven't been on the beta much at all. I'll probably play more when the full game is out.

Good luck, everyone!

Same here, but it's nice to know our clan was invited :D

What is our clan ranked? I can't seem to log into the MGO stats page (or maybe I forgot my password).

Answer: #17.

I like how NeoGAF has three clans in the top ten.

I like the stat tracking, I have twice as many deaths as you Tanuki, haha, and almost as many rolls. 361 knife kills with 6 consecutive kills!

I'm the clan CQC champ, too!

So very cool. Go CAG clan! :)

Hrm, I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong at the Konami community page. It refuses to log me in.

Edit: Got it. A little snooping around on message boards got me the correct URL.

I'll make time for MGO. Is it just TDM against Konami or what?

I'm about to hop on for a little bit to play some TDMs at my usual time.

Alright, sent a few more PMs out to get two more members. If we still need people, I'll take the first PM's for sign-ups and then give you guys the details on what's going on.

Edit: Just reply to my PM, primetime, and you're in.

Thanks. Any chance we could get a halfway decent emblem by tonight?

Communication is going to be very important tonight. I just added a couple of presets.
I just did a little tweaking to Rolento's backwards emblem, like turning it around, and put it up, so let me know what you think.
Looks good to me.

Ouch for Rolento!

I can barely hear anyone over the bluetooth just to let everyone know.
Ouch for Rolento!

I just turned my mic output setting up to 10, so I hope that works. I usually have trouble hearing people too.

EDIT: That wasn't a knock against RR-we just didn't have an emblem up at all.

We finally have an emblem. :D That'll show Konami this is no 2-bit operation.

I just got my first chance to play as the Mk.II and that is a LOT of fun. Helped Snake grab all the dog tags.

 I still think it's silly that after working on the emblem I still never realized it was backwards. After doing so much typography projects you forget how letters are suppose to look >_<

Hope you guys enjoyed the "proper" emblem :)
I am pleasantly surprised that I've never seen it in this beta.
Just happened to me today, in fact. Killed a guy 3 or 4 times in a row but the next time he gets me, whaddya know? He teabags me

I noticed that 1up and a few other clans ahead of us got shut out of the clan games by taking too long to get set-up, so I'm glad we managed to get a team together quickly to not get the same treatment.

I caught some guy in my Battlefield squad teabagging, so I killed him myself. Leave that stuff to the CS players.

When's the Konami match supposed to go down? I wish there was a spectator mode. Or is there one hidden away?

Edit: Just noticed the title. Good luck, guys.
