Metal Gear Solid 4 & Metal Gear Online - 8/6: Rumored Trophy Update Out Now? Rumor!
In act five, in the beginning
when you land on Outer Haven, I was able to get to and through the water tight door without getting an alert. Camouflage and the tranquilizer pistol are your friends.
Indeed. I played most of the game just going in guns blazing. Got my head handed to me on that part, though. Played through carefully, though, and it was pretty easy.

I'm probably going to finish this second play through just exploring each area thoroughly. I was going for zero kills but somehow I ended up with two kills at the end of Act 1. I am going for all the figurines as well so I can get the
Gun Del Sol.

Hopefully for a third play through, I can beat the game on The Boss difficulty and receive the Big Boss emblem. Maybe.

I don't know what I am going to do about getting Snake Eater though because getting all 40 emblems sounds excruciating.
Same here.
Eva bike chase, Drebin chase, and opening the water tight door on Outer Haven.
Yes, those parts will be a bitch.

I'm so lame, because I'm playing on Naked Normal (I usually suck at games). I think I could handle this on a greater difficulty. What exactly gets harder?

Also, the
water-tight door
I was able to get to by just running past, killing tons of enemies, but then hiding behind where it is with 99% camo until the alerts went away. Then snuck around everyone to get back there and open it. I'd like to not get any alerts in that section next time, though.

You can get pretty far by
climbing the first ladder, waiting to drop down, climb the next ladder, and stun the next 2 frogs to the left once you drop down. After that it's just getting to the door

I don't really know how the difficulties compare since I've only played it once, but I know you can't take very many bullets on hard.

I'm done with Act 2, and have 0 alerts, going for
Stealth Camo and Altair Camo
. With Act 3, I'm in the clear since I did it on my first playthrough.

I was thinking about a 0 kill run, but I don't know how I'd not kill
Liquid
.

Is there any way to have all installs on your hdd at all times? It's really annoying that I have to install each time I want to go to a different section of the game.

Afraid not. People are hoping it comes with a patch, along with a Mission Mode of some sort. You can go to all the Mission Briefings from the menu, but not the Missions.

That "kill" does not count as a kill.
Punching a man to death never meant you'd kill him. try it in real life.
At the end of act 5,
you don't punch him to death, Snake's mutated FOXDIE kills Ocelot.

I get bored sometimes because all I use is the traq pistol and stun knife. Its been that way for a long while in the MGS series if you want to go without killing. All those cool weapons, which you can't really use non-lethally. One traq rifle I unlocked just to play with which is nice but don't need it yet so I went back a bit.

I've even beating the 1st 2 B&B with nothing but stun/traq
both armored/armorless sections
. Takes a while but I just wanted to see if it was possible.

Also, I wonder what kind of trophies or even if there will be any when 2.4 comes around.

It's not the mutated Foxdie. It's the new Foxdie that was injected into him that kills Ocelot and Big Boss.

My qualm about the ending:

Did anybody feel the ending got a bit too sci-fi-ish? The whole AI thing, I mean. It sounds like something from Halo: an AI going rampant and destroying the world. I mean it fits into the MGS story fine, but sounds like a recurring theme in video games lately. Just that little tidbit felt unoriginal.

Bad, AI ;)

But still, a good story. Still judging the gameplay length. It's fun, but felt too short. Perhaps my opinion will change with this second play.

I took out all the regular bosses with non-lethal means, and not just the stun knife and MK22: there's stun grenades, stun grenades for the grenade launcher, the mosin nagant, the
syringe
, CQC, tumbling, holdups, nutgrabs, falling atop an enemy below... there were tons of ways to go about it. If it weren't for the
accidental shooting of quite a few zombie troopers in act 2 (I thought they'd be free kills like other chase sequences in the past),
I'd have had zero kills. I'll know that now on the second playthrough.

I got 1 kill in the third act but I have no idea what it was. =(

Looks like there is a new firmware update, 2.36.

I want to play this game again but honestly, I don't know if I can go through all the cut scenes and installing all over again. I might go back and play MGS2 though. Or perhaps I need to go and finish portable ops.. yeahhhh that's a good idea. I'm amazed at how you guys can just run through a game 2 and 3 times.
Wow does like no one talk on MGO? Place feels like a ghost town.
Well, not too many people actually have headsets. I have the PS2 USB headset, but I barely use it.

Question about the story....

big spoilers.

1) why did vamp help out liquid ocelot?
2) where was ray the whole time?
3) why does sunny say " solidus must have taken the day off today?" in the breifing #1?
4) wait who was dr.madnar?

I know that metal gear ray was on Outer Haven the entire time since that thing carries multiple Rays like what you saw at the end of MGSII

1. Ocelot probably hired him. He most likely became a merc after MGS2
2. Ray was on Haven. You can see where it had a docking bay during the sequence where Haven surfaces.
3. Solid, Liquid, and Solidus are the names of the chickens on the Nomad.
4. He was a scientist who made his first appearance in the first Metal Gear. He built that game's version of Metal Gear, and helped build another in MG2.

Couple of Questions:

What the hell is up with Naomi? First shes in love with Otacon, then shes betraying him, then she's loyal to Ocelot, then shes in love with vamp and acts like a vampire and tells vamp to kill everyone, then she tells Otacon that shes sorry and she admires him, and then she leaves a video telling snake and otacon how awesome they are...

Is she crazy? Or just bad character development?

Also, whats wrong with the flash lights on guns? They only stay on for like 3 seconds for me. Is it just to blind the dudes or what?

So to get this straight. FoxDie kills whoever it is programmed to kill... who programs it? The Patriots? Why was it programmed to kill Big Boss?

Also, I was so burnt out by the end of the game that I couldn't really follow Big Bosses 30 minute explanation. Is there a summary of it somewhere? He was saying something like the Patriot AI turned people into the patriots... or...I dunno.

Naomi was working with Ocelot the whole time. She only got close to Otacon because she thought he could help her improve her virus. She instead chose Sunny to help her. She did really fall in love with Otacon though.

As for Foxdie, the Patriots programmed it to kill Big Boss because they wanted him dead. Remember, the Patriots at the time of MGS4 are just AI programs following their intepretation of Zero's will. Zero was "at war" with Big Boss. So the Patriots used Snake again to kill him and Ocelot.

Oh ok...

...but what the hell was that moment where she acted like a vampire and was licking vamp and telling him to kill everyone... then was like... "SORRY!" lol.
Oh ok...

I didn't get that either...
I'd guess nanomachines? the word "nanomachines" is becomign like the excuse star wars has when it can't explain something... it's "the force"

also, I didn't know iPod music has actual affect over gameplay and stats. cool!

I'm not too sure on that one part myself. In a way she felt sorry for Vamp because she was the one who made him into a "monster." Maybe that had something to do with it.

FOXDIE was Naomi's invention from MGS1. She made it and programmed it. Snake was injected it before the Shadow Moses mission. It's been lingering in his body since then. In Act 2, Naomi tells Snake that the FOXDIE was mutating, making it possible to kill anyone once it was completely mutated. The syringes had nanomachine/FOXDIE suppressors so that the nanomachines would shut off since they reacted badly for Snake because they were connected to the System. That is also why Naomi began to die from her cancer since the nanomachines were keeping them in check, and Vamp became "mortal." I'm also pretty sure their nanomachines aren't connected to the System since you never see them react whenever Liquid to control of the System. Drebin also injected you with the new FOXDIE so that you could use the blank ID guns, which plays a small role at the end. Big Boss explains at the end that new FOXDIE was uprooting the old, so Snake was no longer going to produce a deadly strand of mutated FOXDIE. However, he did imply the new FOXDIE was going to mutate eventually, but obviously not in Snake's lifetime and probably not that all an important a detail.

The new FOXDIE killed the founding members of the Patriots, not the old FOXDIE.

As for watching the last cutscene, it should be on YouTube.

To summarize, Major Zero created the Patriot AI's to keep the Patriots' ideas alive forever. Unfortunately, some of the AI went haywire and basically made it so that war exists to make money. Hence destroying the AI freed the world of the Patriots. Basically the AI went rampant a la Halo.

Naomi tries to get close to Otacon, because she believes he can help her finish the program that can destroy GW. She realizes, though, that Sunny can be of more help.
I'm not too sure on that one part myself. In a way she
It was also a matter of Beauty and the Beast with her and Vamp respectively. She created him essentially, so she also felt badly when her abomination died.
wtf? I get six kills at the end of chapter 2...? I didn't kill anyone but I'm guessing it's during the
car chase... any way to avoid the 6 kills?
You didn't shoot the armored vehicles or the powered suit guys during the chase did you? Both contain people.

zewone, I've been using a knife only since the beta. I played the same way when we played against Konami, too.

2-3 minute installs in between acts is too long for you to go to the bathroom, get a drink or just to stretch out?

You can skip all the briefings/codec calls/cutscenes btw.

Beginning of Act 5 destroyed me last night. Remind me why they haven't changed the checkpoint system since 1987?

Because of it, every time I die I need to:
Crawl into the hatch to pick up the ipod song, and crawl all the way to the other end otherwise I'll be caught when I exit the hatch, go into Camouflage and put on the FaceCamo, go into Weapons and switch out the guns they stuck me with for tranq weapons, go into Drebin's shop and buy everything in there (since now I have enough points to buy all weapons,) and hear the grating monkey noise for every purchase.
So basically 2 minutes of "catch-up" and shrieking monkey noises after every death.

And Alerts don't seem to go away. None of the enemies can see me, but the Alert countdown stays at 99, and everyone constantly knows where I am. Very annoying.

People need to set up their blue tooth headsets properly for MGO:
 1. in the XMB under Accessories change your bluetooth mic level to "5".
 2. in MGS4, at the Main Menu (before you load your game or go to MGO), select OPTIONS. Find the setting for your Mic and change it to "10".
 3. in MGO, in a Lobby, hold down the SELECT button until you see VOICE CHAT on the left. Once you see this do not touch the SELECT button again.
 4. Done

just got to act 4 and this game has my heart.

Absolutely amazing.

I love how reading through this thread is very simple for me since I haven't beaten the game yet. Its just spoiler tags everywhere :) I'm excited to beat it so I can read everyones opinions on everything.

Just finished the game and it was amazing! The entire game, especially the final scenes, will hold tremendous weight for series vets... but I'm curious as to how newcomers are finding the game? I really loved the game because it wrapped up an interesting story that I found highly entertaining (and lasted the better part of my life span), but I wonder if someone that hasn't been as involved with the series will be able to enjoy the game as much.

BTW - to those who want an over view of the storyline, I heavily recommend purchasing (or reading a book store) the strategy guide which has a great overview of the entire storyline at the end.

Also, does Konami have a public ranking system to see how many others have recieved certain rankings? I'm curious to see how many people can earn the big boss emblem

Don't forget the Mk.II
and III
. Did you use that very often? Wish it had a few more functions.

Anyway, I just meant that you grab all those weapons and you kind of lock yourself into a section of using maybe 3-5 of them. It is boring in the sense that I'm keeping my self from playing with all of those shiny guns and have a huge mound of DP for nothing.

a reply to part of your... explanation more of a question though

but did drebin knowingly inject snake with the new FOXDIE to intentionally kill the founding members of the Patriots? It doesnt make sense because why would the Patriots who hired Drebin want to kill their own founding members? I know there was a failsafe to prevent the original members from entering the AI but why kill your own founding members?

The Patriots wanted Big Boss and Ocelot dead because they rebelled against them. Remember the huge explanation where Eva explains how Big Boss and Zero had a falling out? Not to mention Big Boss's own explanation.
