You do know that some owners pocket money instead of spending it on their teams? A team like the Marlins, for example, probably got more money from the luxury tax than they spent on their payroll. Don't blame the Yankees for wanting to win. Spending it on good players means better product on field, higher attendance, more revenue, and more money to spend the next year. Good business strategy, good baseball strategy.
Besides, money =/= championships.
Exactly. People like to cry, "The Yankees are ruining baseball." But it's funny, because no one was crying that when they blew the ALCS against the Sox. No one cried it, either, when they lost in the first round three years in a row. And I sure as hell didn't hear a single tear drop hit the floor when they didn't even make the playoffs in '08. And they spent a shit load in every, single one of the years, the same as they are paying out now.
At the end of the day, even if baseball had a salary cap (not happening...the MLBPA is too powerful and organized to ever let that happen), the Yankees would still spend the absolute max, and a bunch of other teams would still spend $40 million. Also, the Yankees would still get most of the major talent they wanted, because plenty of players want to win.
