MMA (UFC, Strikeforce, Bellator, Invicta, etc.) Discussion Thread -- Version II

Personally, I liked Chael and was looking forward to seeing him fight on my birthday.  I was also excited to see Vitor fight, as I grew up watching him and I was glad to see him back. I think it would've been a good match up.  I know they both got in trouble for TRT usage but they were also both in the process of going off of it.  When it comes to Sonnen - love him or hate him, he had a huge draw and made the UFC  lot of money.  He was entertaining to the people who liked him and entertaining to the people who hated him because he ususally lost the fights talked his way into.

Regardless, I'm glad to see see Arlovski is back and curious to see how he does against Schuab.  My overactive imagination sees Schuab getting knocked out fast and the UFC having a NELSON VS. ARLOVSKI rematach, promoting it as "the only man who has knocked out Roy Nelson".

Weidman VS Machida could potentially be a good fight...or a snooze-fest if it's a run and gun points battle.

OSP is a monster. That guys scares me because he doesn't even seem to know how good he could be. Looking forward to seeing him moving up the ladder.

zzzzzzzzz....Heavyweights. I love me some old school Andrei Arlovski...but God damn, I hate heavyweight fights. So sloppy and amateurish.

Sure, Schaub probably outfought Andrei, but that one dimensional haymaker shit wss pissing me off. Neither one is a potential title challenger, so at the end of the day, who cares? lol. And if Arlovski winning leads to a rematch with Roy Nelson (or hell...I'd even take Frank Mir), at least it makes for an interesting story in a boring division.

Wow...good for Ryan Bader. I wasn't expecting that, but he looked really good. Striking was solid and his wrestling was outstanding. Those power doubles were no joke. That's nice to see.

I wasn't sure about Rory's development after the Ellenberger and Lawler fights...but he's looked great in his last two. I'd say he's ready to challenge for the title.

After an exciting day of soccer, I was pretty disappointed with the UFC fights.  Really couldn't hold my attention very well.

Biggest disappointment was Tyron Woodley.  I'm not a Rory fan so I wanted Woodley but he fought a really poor fight.

coker and kimbo are in!?!?!?

interesting, i think it was front row brian that said bjorns firing was because he disagreed with viacoms desire to go head to head with the ufc. I wasnt a big bellator fan but i felt at least their format gave them something to offer without having top tier fighters.

Yeah Rousey just keeps going and may end up being the Silva of the women's division. Carrano has too much cage rust IMO and Cyborg and roids is like Manny or Sin Cara with roids.

Yeah good on Uriah for going all the way through that fight, especially after the Struve fight was canceled.  Dana has questions Uriah's desire to fight so I think he probably scored some major points with Dana.

Not a Rousey fan but her fight was sweet.  Loved seeing Machida come out of his shell a little bit.  He could be a super entertaining fighter if he wanted to. Weidman looked human for the first time in a while.

BJ better stay retired now.  Have no idea why they brought him back as he looked bad in his last few fights before tonight and he was totally outclassed tonight.

Yeah I'm disappointed that Gus is out too.  Jones vs. DC is another fight I wanted to see, but Jones/Gus 2 I was more excited for.

Pettis also said he is fighting December 6th now.  Originally he was gonna fight Gil in January.  We'll see if he can actually make it to the fight...

Can't believe Gustafsson is out. Dana should have just listened to Bones in the first place. Bones knows! lol.

Im happy to see the gus/jones rematch put off. I dont like the super quick title fight rematches. at least they had fights inbetween unlike tj/renan.

They trivialize the first fight by doing that. I miss when the challeneger would need 2-3 wins to get their rematch.

DAMN! I said it after his last fight, but Anthony Johnson is everything that used to be great about Rampage Jackson right now. That is one scary dude. Lil Nog looked like he didn't even want to be in there.

Damn fine KO by Rumble. Looks like the Light Heavyweight division is getting interesting again.

No surprise that Lawler won but Brown put up a good fight.

They're calling it a Super Fight. Both of them are coming off back to back loses and I imagine Diaz is going up to 185. He's going to get wrecked by Silva. It'll be a slug fest for sure but I feel this would have probably been more exciting a while back.

Yeah, I kind of laughed when I saw "super fight" too. I would imagine both of them are going to look rusty. It's really going to be tough to know what to expect from either of them. I guess it's a big fight because it's two big names that people have been anxious to see fight AT ALL for over a year (at that point). Just feels like one of those fights that has no chance of living up to the hype though.

Wow...the Jones-Cormier circus just keeps going, lol. Off the air footage from their ESPN interview.

Obviously, it shouldn't really come as a shock that they said worse things when they were off the air than when they were on the air. I guess at least this shows you the hate is real though. It's also amusing seeing people trying to once again put all of this on Jones (he and Ronda seem to get the same kind of hate). Yes, Jones told Cormier he would kill him...after Cormier said he would spit in Jones's face. Jones's exact words were "You know I would absolutely kill you IF YOU EVER DID SOMETHING LIKE THAT, right?"

He didn't try to one up him with "Well, I wish they would let me next door so I could murder you." Cormier said a shitty thing. Jones said a shitty thing. They were both talking out of their asses, lol. It happens. It blows my mind how naive the media can be. Nothing like this has EVER been said in professional sports before. Not in like boxing...or football...or even tennis, lol (John McEnroe anyone?)

Yeah I hope that "I'd kill you" thing doesn't get blown out of proportion.  He clearly didn't mean it as an actual threat, and DC obviously didn't take it that way.

Not to mention spitting in someone's face is just about the most disrespectful think you can do to someone.  I'd much rather have someone punch me in the face then spit in my face.

Can't wait for them to actually fight.  Please God let them stay healthy for another 45 days!

I've seen plenty of fake rivalries in mma but not sure how I feel about this one. They both come off as stand-up guys so not sure what all the hate is about.

At least to me, the difference is jones is trying to portray himself as something hes not, and with ronda she is what she is.

I dont have any issue with what jones and dc have said to each other, they obviously do not like each other whatsoever. the media is the media, it doesnt matter if they believes what theyre presenting, they are trying to make stories.

Yeah, but I guess my thing is, why care about what Jones is "trying to portray himself as"? He's a fighter. He's not my doctor or a politician even. I want to see him wreck people's faces. As long as he's not a dick to the people who make him a millionaire, that's good enough for me. But then again, I also understand that even celebrities are human and don't really expect him to be perfect either. Just seems like people ride the guy for petty reasons.

Now Jones is out with a leg injury so the fight got pushed back to Jan. 3rd.  The Mighty Mouse Johnson-Cariaso fight got moved to take over the 178 main event.

At least it is a minor enough injury to push the fight back instead of completely killing it.

Was just coming here to post this as well. Sucks...but yeah, at least it's only 3 months. Conversely, it feels like for damn ever since Cain Velasquez has fought. So many belts not being defended. The UFC really needs to get serious about interim belts.

Great.....just great....

I had a feeling something like this was going to happen. At least Dillashaw and Barao are still on.

Posted this on August 9th. fuck they didn't even make it 3 full days.

I'm not sure how the UFC can possibly solve the problem of people getting injured outside the cage, but they should look into it as best as possible. This is getting ridiculous.

They really can't, these guys train everyday and sometimes sh*t just happens. I'm sure their contracts ban them from doing certain things that may cause injury to themselves but getting hurt while training is just something that isn't going to change.

Yeah, I think the best they could do is just be more active with interim belts. It gets really aggravating when the champion is out so long that the #1 contender ends up changing 2-3 before the next title defense. There was once a time when even Jon Fitch got screwed by this back when GSP was recovering from his first surgery.

The UFC roster is a bit thin on stars as it is. Finding a better way to promote the 2-5 guys would do a lot to help the UFC's brand. Having some extra prize on the line to hype these #1 contender bouts would definitely make things more interesting.

And now for something totally different. Apparently, Shaq used to jump on his Phoenix Suns teammates while naked and make them do Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with him.

Yes...that's probably the most hilarious and awesome thing I've heard all day. fuck indeed, lol.

Looks like Gustafsson is pissed as he will be healed up and ready to fight before January 3rd.  He posted this on his facebook.

"I just heard the news that Jones is injured and the fight is rescheduled to January 3????
Until then, I will be more than ready, it was MY fight to begin with and I WANT the fight as the number 1 contender. End of story!"

Oh boy...

Is it just me or does anybody else really, really want to see Dog the Bounty Hunter actually track down War Machine? I want it on camera...and I want to hear Dog yell "Get on the ground boy!" and then pepper spray his ass. It needs to happen so bad.

In other MMA news, Mike King (TUF 19 contestant) destroyed his career by failing his drug test from the UFC Dublin card. Here's his direct quote on it.

"The consequences for my conduct are truly significant," King said in a statement toMMA Fighting. "The life changing $50,000 Fight of The Night bonus I was awarded has been taken away, I have been informed that my UFC promotional agreement is being terminated, I have been placed on a nine month suspension, and I have publicly humiliated myself. I accept full responsibility for my actions and decisions and make no excuses."
Ouch...what an idiot. Here's an artist's interpretation of King's career.

This would/will make an amazing south park episode.

I feel bad, the girl was really beaten to hell, but holy cow, the whole bounty hunter, twitter exchanges have been pretty funny.

Yeah, what he did to her and the other guy is freaking horrifying. And he claims he was "fighting for his life". Bull-freaking shit. Even a legitimate self-defense claim wouldn't hold up with the amount of damage he did. You can't just mercilessly beat the shit out of somebody until they're on the edge of death.

Once they're no longer a threat, you're supposed to...you know...get away (since you are defending yourself after all). It doesn't take 18 broken bones in the face, broken ribs, and a ruptured liver to get away...from your girlfriend. I mean, that could seriously be an attempted murder charge.

But yeah...I'm sure people think Dog is corny as hell, but I enjoy the guy. When my daughter was born, I discovered that Netflix had all the seasons of his show on Instant Stream. That got me through a lot of sleepless nights, lol.

This article is also fantastic.

How in the hell did I not know this show existed?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAVBx6wzdpU

Some of it is rehashed from Bas's old self defense videos, but he's still as hilarious as ever. And as always...nothing beats a punch to the pills, lol.

Just finished the UFC show from last night. Bendo got fucking dropped hard.
He finally got punished for being so laid back in his fights. I'm not sure any fighter has ever brought it to Henderson like that (maybe Edgar...but he didn't have the same kind of power/strength to stay on him). I'll say it again, Henderson needs a new gym. He has all the potential in the world...but his fighting style just comes across as lazy. I got the sense that he's not really used to being bullied. Because he didn't handle it well at all.

The Jones hate is ridiculous at this point. He had freaking surgery. And Cormier's "tough guy" bullshit of "I would have fought anyway..." Yeah, well, that makes you dumb...

Meanwhile, TJ Dillashaw is talking hilarious shit.

"I don't even know if Renan Barao has had enough time to fully recover from the beating I gave him in May" - TJ Dillashaw
Love it. :)
