NFL 2010-2011 Season Discussion Thread

What a crazy game last night between the Packers and the Vikings. Every single Packers game this season has to come down to the wire, it seems. If not for injuries (and a shit ton of penalties against the Bears), the team could well be 7-0 right now.

Both teams kind of got screwed over by the refs at points in the game. I hate to admit it, but Visanthe Shiancoe had possession on that overturned touchdown catch. However, the catch would not have been possible without the ridiculous "late hit" call that preceded it. As for the notion that the Quarless TD shouldn't have counted, I have no idea what the announcers were talking about. He had possession and only lost it after hitting the ground. Quarless really messed up when he tripped while wide open later on, though.

Brad Childress made a terrible decision to let the clock run down with 27 seconds left in the half and two timeouts remaining. They have one of the best quarterbacks of all time and one of the best receivers of all time, both of whom specialize in the long ball, and they didn't even try. It made no sense. Also, I was kind of hoping for an interception. ;)

There were other questionable calls. Greg Jennings got screwed out of that first down on forward progress, and with 2:30 left, Clay Matthews just got slammed to the ground and there was no penalty. That would have stung, had the Packers lost.

All in all, it was a very entertaining game. The Packers finally beat Favre, sacking him for the first time and forcing 3 interceptions. Brandon Jackson actually looked like a competent starting running back, too! Oh, and I have to give credit where cerdit is due: that hesitation zig zag run from Percy Harvin for the TD was a thing of beauty. Just perfect timing and execution by Harvin and the blockers there.

Next Sunday's going to be incredible for televised football:
10 A.M.: Packers at Jets
1 P.M.: Titans at Chargers; Vikings at Patriots
5:20 P.M.: Steelers at Saints

Rofl Mike Singletary and Jed York still think they can win the division, they are doing the wrong playoff rant at these press conferences if you know what I mean.
"I've played against him before - there's no reason to shy away from him. That's hard to say after throwing four picks at a guy, but if we had to play him tomorrow, I'd go at him every time." - Jay Cutler on his performance in the Redskins loss.

Cutler proceeded to pass the interview to Johnny Knox. Knox was out of position and the interview was promptly taken over by DeAngelo Hall. Cutler responded, "Damn, didn't see that coming".
Favre has 2 fractures in his ankle. Conspiracy time - this will allow him to retire and get the hell out of this miserable season and handle all the Sterger stuff out of the spotlight.
You know, Sterger spelled backwards is "regrets". :whistle2:#
It was nice to win another close game, but I'm sick of these games going down the last minute every week!

Yeah, the Skins are the cardiac team in the league this year by a mile.

Also, thought I'd share. NSFW.

The current rules for what a player needs to do to catch a touchdown pass are ridiculous and need to be changed.

However, under the current NFL rules, that wasn't a TD catch because the ball was moving around after he hit the ground. If it would've been reviewed, it would have been overturned easily.
Lol, the one game Dallas doesn't do a lot of turnovers and penalties, they gain next to no yards and can't stop anything.
Two short fields due to interceptions, a kick return for a TD, and a hurt QB would result into not many yards.
Romo has a broken clavicle.
Romo is flawed and can't play under pressure, but he's the QB of Dallas. Without him, they basically have nobody because their backups are quite bad.

dunno wtf they r thinking
1st and 6, u should run it at least once

it's was almost as stupid as that first half fumble recovered for td earlier in the season with 20 seconds left on the clock

Saw some interesting facts about the Browns/Saints game, which was that Cleveland has beaten the defending Super Bowl champs for the third straight year (Giants, Steelers, and Saints). The Browns are also 12-4 all-time against the Saints (8-2 on the road) and have won three straight against them in the Superdome.

As a Dallas fan, the only QB's I would take over Romo are Manning, Brady, or Brees. Aside from that there really isn't another QB I'd want.

Although, I'm glad Dallas is losing, because maybe JJ will finally see Wade Phillips and Jason Garret are terrible.

You can't possibly be a Dallas fan if you are glad they are losing. Also, you are crazy if you think Romo is the 4th best QB in the league. Get those beer goggles off! :D

Exactly, its exactly what cost the Lions the game against the Bears. The sad part is whether or not the receiver controlled the ball upon getting up was much more questionable with Quarless's catch than Calvin Johnson's catch was.

Regardless of the control of the ball, I'm still not even convinced he was in bounds when he caught it. One foot hit the ground and then his back hit the white on the back of the endzone. I agree with Childress all the way about being a horribly officiated game. The poor officiating did affect both sides, it certainly affected the outcome of the game, and more than likely cost the Vikings a win.

I will say that it looks like the time is over for Favre. He tried another run at it but its time to move on I feel. He's too injured to be effective anymore and the Vikings need to move to Tavaris. Give T-Jack another shot at starting QB for a while and its time to look toward the future which I'm optimistic will be Joe Webb.

I know someone's gonna yell bandwagon so I'm gonna make it clear right now that even with Tavaris as QB, I haven't given up on the Vikings. Tavaris has a legitimate shot at being a decent quarterback so we might as well give him a shot.

every year i say we need a good 2nd QB just in case remo gets taking out of the game and look at it now and we had alot of chance to get one too

Dallas D makes Eli look like Peyton.

It seems like QB's this season are throwing picks like there's no tomorrow.
Eli is throwing lots of TD's but he's also leading the league in picks and fumbles lost, it's gonna cost him when his team can't bail him out vs a good team.

I don't think he is the fourth best QB in the league, but I also don't agree with the assessment that he is as over rated as people act like he is. His O line has always been a penalty ridden piece of shit and they frequently have not been able to protect. Most QBs playing behind his line would have been destroyed long ago. He also gets a lot of shit for making bad plays, but he gets put in position to do so a lot of the time. Jason Garrett is a fucking hack. I really wish someone with have given him at HC job after 2007. He gives up on the run all the fucking time, his teams never have any discipline, and he doesn't have any real philosophy behind his offense.

What it boils down to is that Romo gets all the heat no matter how awful the other players are. People act like he is terrible in the playoffs, but if Terry Glenn doesn't fumble on the 1 there is no need for the FGA at the end of the Seattle game in 06. The same goes for the running game evaporating in the second half and Crayton not catching balls against the Giants in 07.

A down year for the Boys could be the best thing for them. Someone like Cowher or Gruden would relish getting their hands on a job like this. Jerry is going to end up giving up player personnel control again and things will start to right themselves. With a little discipline and some focus on areas that aren't skill positions they could be good again.

Also Jerry deserves a lot of the blame for this season. His hubris and unwillingness to go out and upgrade areas and spend money put him in this position. Cheaping out on a kicker and on the line shows he doesn't have the knack for building teams like he thinks he does.

All in all this season has sucked for me. The Panthers and the Cowboys have a combined two wins seven weeks into the season. Shit is fucking rough. Just glad that basketball starts tonight and the Rangers are in the World Series.

I hate how the Packers keep playing very close games this season. I wish the Packers would get that running game going again.

I can agree with all of this. Romo is an above average QB in the league for sure. He's definitely top 10 but probably near the bottom of that list. Any QB who can roll out of the pocket and make my heart skip three beats must be at least pretty good.

My biggest fear for the Giants is that Cowher takes the Cowboys job next year or some other big name coach who you know will get the job done. Gruden can have it - I never thought he was that great since he basically won with what Tony Dungy left him. I love Wade Phillips though!

Well, I would like them to be winning, but Dallas is in need of a coaching change. Wade Phillips is not good enough to take any team to the SB. He would need to discipline in order to do that.

I think Romo is good, but not the 4th best QB, its just the three I mentioned have quick releases, so even with Dallas bad Offensive line, they could do alright.

QB's like Rivers or Big Ben would probably hold on to long and get sacked.

I'm not high on Brees. I would take him over Romo, but not by much. Brees is overrated without a doubt.

But in any case Dallas needs to remake their team now. They've been trying to roll with basically the same team for a while now and their veterans just obviously aren't getting it done these days. They need to pull a Detroit Lions and build up a team of young guys you can teach and grow and in a few years, be a beast.

Look at the Lions, going from looking like no hopers for the next 1000 years to making practically every game they've played super close.

If they can protect Jon Kitna he can win some games for them. He had some good years with the Bengals and one good year with the Lions. Plus there is a lot of talent on that Dallas offense, so if they give him time they will be competitive. I say the Cowboys finish 7-9 this year, most of the league is so injury ridden it will be hard not to win 6 out of 10.

So you think a team that has a .167 winning percentage so far will play .600 football the rest of the season? I think that is highly unlikely at this point. The Cowboys only have 2 games left against teams below .500 - Jacksonville and Detroit. Kitna hasn't played in a meaningful game in like 3 or 4 years. Also, when he was in his prime he was a below-average QB and he is 38 now - 38!! There's no chance!!

I actually hope they can get to 7-9 because then Wade could make a case to stick around if he can get them there with their upcoming schedule and Romo on the DL. :D

Not to mention that they will have to march in and face the Giants again next month. If the OL couldn't keep Romo from doom, I don't like Kitna's chances at all. If Kitna gets hurt, Dallas is left with a green as hell Stephen McGee which is when the Cowboys might as well deadman's float their way up the draft board.

On further inspection I think the Lions have a good shot against Dallas, which tells you what I think of Dallas. I don't get why people think Kitna is any good either? He can't play under pressure and has terrible accuracy. Decent arm, but not great.

NFL admits it screwed up some calls on Sunday ie the Favre to Shiancoe TD

and you know the Bills got screwed on that play where it should of been blown dead but half a dozen Ravens raised him in the air and stripped him

Miami got screwed too

The Farve and Miami calls were BS but I kind of agree with the Ravens call. If someone from the Bills came in from behind and pushed the pile forward 5 yards they would have given him forward progress.

I thought only four teams were off in any given week, but I'm missing huge chunks of my offense on both of my teams (9/14 off this week on one team and 6/12 in the other). Atlanta, New York Giants, Philly, Cleveland, Baltimore, and Chicago are all off and I'm crippled this week.

Cleveland being off shouldn't affect you ( ), but yeah, I have a crapload of byes this week too. In my money league, it was my kicker, defense, two of my three QBs, Turner, Knox. Plus I have Malcom Floyd out with an injury.

Dallas is catching a fat beatdown from the Jags right now. No Tony Romo, and they're still not running the ball as much as they should be when they've got THREE capable backs. Ridiculous.
Broncos can't even beat a shitty team like the Niners? LOL
Well, to be fair, the niners finally got a competent performance out of their QB.

I think they need to let Troy Smith start next week, too. Maybe they'll finally figure out that Smith isn't fit to be starting.

Even though it was tight till the end, the Packers played a great game in beating the Jets 9-0. This was the first game on the schedule I thought the Packers would lose going into it, but their defense, which has been a huge reason for their 3 losses with all the injuries and penalties, was dominant for the most part.

As for the offense, several passes went just off the fingertips of Jennings and Jones, and Green Bay got screwed out of at least 3 points when no PI was called when Jordy Nelson was shoved down halfway through the 3rd quarter.

The Titans/Chargers game, which should be good, is blacked out here, so we got a second early game in the form of Dallas and Jacksonville. I didn't see much of that due to the Packers being on, but I like the result. Now it's Vikings/Patriots and Steelers/Saints.
