Nintendo 3DS - General Discussion Thread

Not sure if I like the artstyle for Smash Bros. 3DS. Not sure why they didn't just use the same style as the WiiU version.

A little disappointing on the 3DS front in regards to E3 though.

Another Special Mii Aonuma, again cosplaying as Luigi. These guys do know there's about 50 hats to choose from, right?

Yeah, but it's the Year of Luigi.

You just have to have your SpotPass set-up for whenever others are sent out. You can't retroactively get Miis that you've missed.
I think I have it set up. Took a while to update my 3ds and got Swapnote from the eShop but still no green light to show I got something yet. I did disable sharing info with Nintendo though. Also I read that the Iwata Mii is still available (came out around Friday from what I've read). How long is a particular special Mii available for?

Usually at least 48 hours. I think this Iwata is all week, since my newest 3DS just got him yesterday, while the others got him when he was first announced.

Not really sure, so I'd probably enable what I could to get him, then disable it later.

These Spotpass specials have been my best way of getting those damned pink pieces.

Oh, and apparently that special Mii referred to earlier in the thread is an invitation via Swapnote Mii, not a gold pant one. Got my hopes up there. (Unless It's non-NA, in which case it still doesn't help)

Even my local Gamestops have no pink pieces on the puzzles.

Edit: Confirmed in EU. Nothing yet NA.

Store demo units are not set up for any of the pink piece puzzles. For that they need SpotPass enabled which is usually not.

To get the Special Miis, enable SpotPass on your StreetPass after updating. Swapnote has nothing to do with Special Miis.

You do need WiFi to get Special Miis, though. If you do not have wireless at your house, head to a Best Buy, McDonalds, or any place that has "attwifi" or you can connect to the Nintendo Zone (which you automatically download) to.

Actually, Store demo units are usually regular 3DS units with an adapted battery and fixed into a case. My local Gamestops don't even have demo carts, they tend to have the full games in them, since the employees usually use the units to boost their puzzle pieces too.

Swapnote can and does send Mii's to your Streetpass Plaza. They just don't have gold pants.

EDIT: Aonuma now confirmed for NA regions. Level 5 Green Mii. All puzzles/pieces available.

Ok I think I had to access the Plaza after updating.  Once I did I got over a dozen messages.  After that the screen reloaded and said someone visited.  I check and it's Aonuma.  Also after reading up on pink puzzle pieces Iooked to see what piece I should select from Aonuma.  I don't see any pinks so does that mean I'm screwed out of a pink?

Lastly that bastard Iwata still hasn't visited!

If you have any puzzles that have pink pieces available, you should be able to get one. Otherwise, take a middle piece of an unclaimed puzzle after scrolling for a bit. Should be pink.

Pinks can only be acquired through Streetpass (or Spotpass). You can't buy them with play coins.

Iwata might not show now that Aonuma is available. I'm not sure. Don't think they'd have two overlap like that.

Okay I'll just pick a middle piece for one of the last puzzles.  It'd be nice if there was some message about pink pieces.  I found some images of where pink pieces are.

So there's no way to get Iwata?  I read somewhere that people kept changing their region/resetting 3ds to get Iwata again and again to get multiple pink pieces and then tag a Mii on their main 3ds system.  If an area hasn't gotten Aonuma yet maybe I can still get Iwata?

Edit for above: okay apparently not.  what I read was how people just exploit the fact that they have 2 systems and gain "fake" tags with fake info to get accomplishments.

I'm not that concerned with pinks as I'm sure to find many people with pieces I don't have as I'm still new - though I did get over 30 tags last week and one guy had all panels completed (though I didn't update so no idea how many there were).

I have no idea but tonight when I went out I got a StreetPass but no green light came on, which is odd, person was playing AC of course!

If you have style savvy trendsetters there is an animal crossing shirt you can download from the main menu today.

I think you've misunderstood me.

A 3DS needs to be able to connect to the Internet in order to download all puzzles after the initial 7. Most store units are not set up to receive WiFi and thus cannot connect to the Internet. Therefore, they cannot receive pink pieces or attempt Find Mii 2. Some store employees may set it up without their bosses knowing, but that is rare.

And while Swapnote does send Miis to your Plaza, they do not count as Special Miis, nor do you need Swapnote in order to receive any Special Miis.

As for receiving new puzzles, the initial pink piece batch is set up like the first batch, you get a random piece and the other puzzles you need StreetPass for. Every other puzzle comes through SpotPass, so keep checking when in WiFi every so often and you will get them all eventually.

What do you mean by "batch"? I just updated my 3ds a few hours ago; I never updated before so I think I only saw around 8 puzzle panels. As I just updated (USA 3ds and info), I should have 25 puzzle panels displayed according to

StreetPass has 7 basic puzzles when you start (Mario Galaxy, Metroid: Other M, Mario Bros. Wii, Kirby, Mario/Luigi/Bowser, Pikmin, Zelda: Twilight Princess). You get a piece for one puzzle and get the others via StreetPass. The first pink puzzles were sent in a second batch of 7 (DKC Returns, Mario Kart 7, Rhythm Heaven, StarFox 64 3D, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Mario 3D Land, Pilotwings). You get a piece for one of them and need to get the rest via StreetPass. Every other puzzle you will eventually get via SpotPass.

Again one more post.

After checking the new (for me) options in the Plaza I went to the Puzzle Swap so I could get a piece from Aonuma.  Instead I got messages about the update Puzzle Swap and got a "random" piece to a 'new' puzzle panel (Zelda OoT) but it wasn't a pink.  Afterward I tried to see if Aonuma would appear to give me a piece but apparently not.  All current puzzle panels should at least be viewable as ??? just like when getting a piece through a StreetPass tag.  So I lost out on a pink.

If a friend has completed all 20+ puzzles, can I get a piece from any puzzle panel for example a pink from Luigi's Mansion when I have 0/XX pieces or would I have to unlock access to the panel as it seems some puzzles suchas LM are released via SpotPass?

Find Mii also had update message when I selected it; however I was able to use Aonuma.  No idea why I couldn't in Puzzle Swap.

Yea, you need to have access to the puzzle in order to get a piece from it. You will automatically get a piece from SpotPass-exclusive puzzles, but rarely will you get a pink piece.

so I guess the SpotPass puzzles will appear "randomly" and can't get a first piece by tagging someone via StreetPass? Some of this stuff is really confusing (Street vs Spot). Makes me slightly more upset that I got screwed out of a piece from Aonuma.

when I was getting tons of StreetPasses a week ago, one day a friend got the green light notification but I didn't. So in his plaza it showed he had one more tag than in my plaza (thus me missing out on puzzle/findmii). I think I "fixed" the tag count discrepancy later when I got another tag but turned his system off.

another glitch. Some guy my friend and I tagged a few times has a hat on in my friend's plaza but not in mine. the first time I tagged this guy he had a hat on in the plaza.

has anyone tested the StreetPass range? searching online various people say it's 100ft but that doesn't seem right to me. my friend and I were waiting in an area and I paced around a bit maybe getting 20 feet away at most. a few minutes later we get seated for dinner with the rest of our group. he checks and got 2 tags and I only got 1 tag. the tag I got matched with one he got. both of these people we tagged before as well.

There are some quirks with Streetpass. I have multiple systems, and have had instances where something like Unit 1 tagged Unit 2, but Unit 2 did not tag Unit 1 back.

It's rare, but happens.

As for range, I believe it's like any other signal strength. It depends on a number of factors. 50-75 Ft seems the norm, but certain things decrease even that. Gamestop, for instance, I can't tag machines inside the store unless I walk in. So anything that would block a regular wifi signal probably blocks Streetpass.

Hats are dependent on your progress in Find Mii 1/2. It takes around 10 times beating Find Mii 2's extra quest to get them all. (I did it once, and that was with multiple Mii's maxed out at level 7).

To clarify on my comment about the hat:

One day my friend and I tagged someone. The Mii had a pirate hat in both of our Plazas. We tagged him several times. Either the 2nd or 3rd time, he did not have the pirate hat on. My friend's plaza had the guy with the pirate hat on. My friend said it may be becuase I didn't unlock the pirate hat but that can't be the case as I saw it the first time. I noticed this guy's last activity was Mii Maker for both my friend and my Plaza so maybe this guy was changing his Mii. All the other times we tagged him however, my friend had the guy with the pirate hat and my plaza had him hatless. I think I got around 6/7 tags of him and my friend one more (2 of my tags were when my friend was not with me but the rest we got at the same time).

There must be some issues especially since my 3ds was basically factory operating system (though I did do an "update" via MHU cartridge). I can image the shitstorm if trades go awry when X/Y come out.

As for range, I expect connection issues typical of WiFi etc. The thing is my friend was right behind me while we're walking around the place when he got a tag I didn't (8+ hours elapsed since we both tagged this person too). Also it took several minutes before we got each others tag one day when we were staying in the same room. My system was charging while in sleep and I went to check the time. Just noticed plaza updated to 8hrs since tag. My friend turns the wireless switch on and we wait a good several minutes.

Anyway I got Special Mii Konno as well. I had to Google the name as it wasn't familar

Confirmed Konna for NA. Might knock a few more puzzles out now.

I've tried to force Streetpass hits and never have any luck. Odd about the hat thing. Never saw that before.

None of mine tag at the same time. Usually about an hour before all tag each other after the 6-8 hour wait. (I think it's as soon as 6. No earlier.)

Is Yoshi's New Island coming out this year? There are so many 3DS games coming out that I have to buy.

Just got Tezuka, playing New Super Mario Bros. 2. That's, what, 5 since E3 started?
4, I think. None of mine got him yet, but I'm also in the middle of a cycle with my 3DS units so I can't check without screwing it up.

Iwata, Aonuma, Konna, and now Tezuka makes 4.

I'll bet Reggie will be in there soon. Maybe Miyamoto

Has anyone else read about the improved streetpass?

They said they were launching a kind of streetpass bank at McDonald's and Starbucks, and you wouldn't have to physically pass another player.

StreetPass is very common in crowded Japan. In contrast, our American and European users seem to meet each other via StreetPass less frequently, and as a result, we have not seen a significant rise in the number of people who carry their Nintendo 3DS systems in Sleep Mode. When compared with our Japanese users, it seems that fewer people are experiencing the StreetPass feature on a daily basis.

This year we will release software that opens doors for new ways to play through the StreetPass feature, such as “Animal Crossing: New Leaf,” and I hope that more people around the world will be able to experience the benefits that StreetPass provides.

We will achieve that by taking advantage of Wi-Fi access points and implementing a StreetPass relay feature into the Nintendo 3DS hardware.

Starbucks and McDonald’s, among others, provide about 28,000 Wi-Fi access points, which are connected automatically to Nintendo 3DS, in the U.S. and 24,000 in Europe.

We are going to perform a system update that introduces a framework that uses these access points as StreetPass relay stations by this autumn.

This will involve taking a Nintendo 3DS system in Sleep Mode to an access point which will then connect automatically and send StreetPass data to a server. At the same time, the Nintendo 3DS system also receives the StreetPass data of another user from the server. In this setting, data is not exchanged directly, but rather through a StreetPass relay station. Hence, as opposed to, say, Person A and Person B directly exchanging game data, data will be transmitted in sequence from Person A to Person B, and then onto Person C and so on.

But the surprising and magical feeling of exchanging data with someone you simply shared a location with is as real as before.

Previously the StreetPass feature required multiple Nintendo 3DS systems in Sleep Mode to be in the same location at the same time, but in this framework, you can exchange data with others by visiting the same location even at a different time, so we can certainly expect the use rate of the StreetPass feature to grow significantly.

Well, shit. I guess I'll be hitting McD's more frequently if this happens.

Still can't bring myself to drink the sludge at Starbucks.

I wonder if the Nintendo Zone trick will work on this.

^^ nice update. so i can drop by mcdos/starbucks and get streetpass from miis that went to the same location at any time? I can do that everyday and hopefully get puzzle pieces from it everyday too!

I only have 200+/600+pieces right now. Hopefully nintendo increases the number of play coins one can earn each day. 10 is just plain cheap! With each use requires 2 coins.

Depends on if you get one hit per visit, or several. I'm going to guess one hit per machine per visit, otherwise it'll get screwed up quick.

That is really sick! It is similar to what I was suggesting that Nintendo should set up StreetPass demo units in places. There are plenty of McD's and Starbucks around here and I stop by them frequently.

Street passes at these locations are apparently blocked by the Nintendo Zone network, which is basically any AT&T hotspot, so if someone is playing a DS game and you see them playing you can't get their pass since their system has to be closed. This is a problem because I often see people playing at Sams club and I can't get the pass because they are playing and my system is sitting in my purse in sleep mode, because Sam's has the AT&T hotspot. I can't exactly walk up to the person and tell them to close their DS because they are kids and it would be creepy for an adult to do that.

This will definitely help out a lot of people.  I wonder if they'll have a list of stores as well, but then again, I don't know how many McDonald's the US has.

Did Mario Golf really get pushed to next year? I thought it was supposed to be out this summer.
Seems that way. That slide was from Nintendo's Analyst Briefing today. Plus, they don't even mention Mario Golf on their E3 page.

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/library/events/130612/02.html

As for the Streetpass Relay feature, which was also announced during the briefing (Page 3), it should be interesting to see how much this improves things for people in less densely-populated areas. Too bad it won't launch until the Fall system update.

It sounds like the feature works at any AT&T hotspots, if you can connect to Nintendo Zone at the spot, it will likely work there. There are a ton of these hotspots in my area, you can also often reach the hotspot just by being outside of the store or even close to it. I have connected to lots of these spots and they usually work very well. If it catches the data by just passing by with your 3DS its going to pick up an awful lot of 3DS's especially for locations next to a highway or major roadway. Sometimes there is enough time to connect even if you are just driving by so this has the potential to pick up a lot of data. The motto here is basically just to continue to take your 3DS everywhere you go and leave it in sleep mode. You should pick up a lot more hits.

I don't know how many hits you would get at a time on your system but even if it was one per day per hotspot you could still get a lot of hits because here its easy to pass several of these hotspots in just one day.

I don't know if you have to open the system or not the last time I was at Sam's I had to open my 3DS to connect to Nintendo Zone but maybe they will change it and make the data exchange automatic when the system is closed.

You can only hold 10 StreetPasses at a time for the Plaza though.  But it will definitely help for games.

I hope this means Nintendo's going to increase the amount of games you can hold StreetPass data for at once as well.

I got Tezuka, wonder if people that didn't get Konno by that time if they would just get Tezuka or both.

Also I got a Mii in my Plaza 2 minutes prior to Konno.  The Mii is a woman named Reiko with purple shirt, apparently "Met via Invitation".  Thing is I never played any game online so no idea what that means.

Note: I didn't get any StreetPass Miis.  All I did was check the apps/appgames and got the SpotPass Miis and their Swapnotes

You would have to check your 3DS periodically to see if you got any passes if you knew you were going to be going by a lot of the hotspots.

Met by Invitation means you played a game online and got their Mii.
But I didn't play any games at all for the day. I only used Mii Plaza, Swapnote, Activity Log, System Settings, etc.

The only 3ds games I have are Fire Emblem (very early so I didn't unlock Spotpass), MHU (never played coop but did get unlock spotpass and hunter card), and Kid Icarus (played only first level).

I wasted my friend's Mii (lv 7) and around 40 coins until a white shirt appeared :bomb:. I kept telling my friend to change his Mii to white shirt but he didn't listen and I forgot to remind him when we streetpassed. There should be a way to order the Heroes prior to entering.

Also I heard the hired Heroes are either cats or dogs but I only get cats - I left the "Cats or Dogs" part in profile blank.

Another also, I got Hayashida earlier today.
