The Nintendo DS will be $129.99 just in time for Nintendogs. I believe the drop occurs 8/21, but it might be sooner. More info soon.

Update - TRU is sending out a flyer for it. It's advertised $129.99, but will be $129.95. The ad is basically for Nintendogs and includes a $10 off $50 NINTENDO purchase coupon(should work on the hardware, so you could get it for $119.95 - last years worked on hardware and I don't think it says excludes hardware). The flyer is only going out to R-zone best guests, though, and should arrive at homes next week. The coupon SKN is 913747.

Update 2 - I figured I might as well post this here, too, since it's more Nintendo news. There are two new items listed in the TRU computer. There is a "GC Ltd Ed PK XD Bundle" listed. The Bundle is priced at $99.99 with no date yet, but at least it looks like Nintendo is going to be trying this Christmas. Also, a GBA SP Sponge Bob system is listed.

Update 3 - The price drop is actually occuring this week. Probably Wednesday or Thursday. It is universal, also. Second, if you do get the $10 off coupon from TRU in the mail it WILL work on the system, so you can get it for $119.95 making it an even better deal. Also, TRU is going to do a special bundle deal for the drop that might make it even better(probably with the Pro Gamers Kit and something else).

Update 4 - Alright this should be the last update for this deal. Here is the bundle TRU is doing for the drop. On Sunday you can get a DS + Spiderman + the Starter Kit (normally $15 and includes headphones, car charger, and screen protector) for only $150 (normally $175). On Tuesday for Nintendogs its the same deal except substitute any Nintendogs game for Spiderman. Hopefully somewhere else has an even better deal, but for now that might be the best. Normally the DS + Nintendogs would cost $160, so you save $10 off the bat plus you get the Starter Kit free basically and if you have the $10 off coupon it would only be $140 making it that much better.

Bundle is only $130 online:

And thanks to everyone in this thread. I honestly think CAG did make Nintendo announce it earlier as usually the drops have been announced by Nintendo around a day before. Thanks and I'm sure to have even more news first for you guys.
Actually, while Nintendo doesn't need to beg for money, this strategy is really, really smart. Nintendo's pulling out all the stops to build a huge user base for the DS which could potentially crush the PSP if people lose interest in watching movies on the go.
thats the main reason I got rid of my PSP...
I didn't need a movie player...

I only liked lumines & thats not enuff reason for me to keep the thing... beside DS has meteos which I enjoyed more...

with a price drop, Nintendogs & Lunar... I'll pick up another DS for my GF...
I doubt they'll have the Metroid Prime Hunters Bundle for $130... it's more likey that $130 for a DS alone or $150 for DS w/ Hunters.
I agree. It makes sense from a marketing perspective.
Is it safe to assume that this is a universal price drop? It would seem so.
The reason I'm skeptical is because it would seem like a poor time to lower the price when Nintendogs is coming out. I personally know of many who will be buying a new DS just for Nintendogs. Nintendo could make more money if they keep it at $150 for a while longer.
Sure, Nintendogs was a big hit in Japan, but the average American gamer may not be so big on the dog sims.

i also bought mine at launch, but since i already have 7 DS games, i am definatly getting my money out of it. I plan to pick up Advance Wars also when it comes out!

Sony is in a little trouble now. They are going to have to pull something out of their asses, and soon!

Just look at everyone in this thread who are saying they are going to pick one up or buy one for someone else. ITS INSANITY!
I want a ds, but i'm a left handed writter and when using the stylus w/ my left hand it makes it very difficult to use the dpad... Wonder if Nintendo ever thought about us lefties?

:(
I can't think of a game that needs the stylus and the D pad to be used at the same time. Also, I'm pretty sure all the stylus use games have a left or right handed option.

I still won't get it even with the price drop, what I want is one of those new colors they have in japan. I just don't want to pay the extra price to get it.
That's true.. what you lose in hardware, you make up for it in software. But if they give away Hunters, then they're losing potential money right there.
Not as much as you might think. Metroid has a lot of competition coming up (Nintendogs, Mario Kart, Tony Hawk, Animal Crossing, Advance Wars, Castlevania), so it may end up getting ignored a bit. Typically Metroid hasn't been as strong of a franchise as Mario Kart and Tony Hawk, and Hunters isn't as suited for handhelds as Advance Wars and Castlevania. Had Nintendo bundled one of those games, it probably would have hurt them a lot more. I don't really expect Metroid to be one of the top five sellers for the DS this holiday, although the bundle may help it out quite a bit.
does this include the colored ones?
I'm sure both the Platinum and the Electric Blue will be included. Unfortunately, that is all America has for colors right now.

couldnt agree more. Metroid Prime: Hunters looks likes its going to be a pain in the ass to play. I never even considered buying it. Castlevania and Advance Wars on the otherhand, i plan on buying both, soon after release!

I sort of regret buying my DS at launch, because I haven't put much time into Mario 64 DS, and the only other good game for me was Feel the Magic. The deal with Mario 64DS was pretty good, now you just get the choice to use that extra cash for whatever game you want.

Now that the DS has been out for over a half year, there are alot of good titles for it: Meteos, Kirby's Canvas Curse, Nanostray, Zoo Keeper, Polarium, Wario Ware Touched etc. Not to mention by Christmas; Mario Kart, Metroid Prime Hunters, Advance Wars, Lunar Dragon Song, Castlevania DS will all be out and the system will be easily worth $100.

Let us not forget Tamagotchi, people ate that up.

I have a question. I received a Nintendo DS for Chrismas. The DS was purchased at Toys R Us and I have the 1 year replacement plan (or whatever it's called).

Do you guys think I'll get the difference back? The DS was $150 then and if theres a price drop do you think I can get $20 in return?

I'm not sure about that one ^^^^ Usually replacement plans are only for anything defective, and price matching is usually only for 30-90 days tops. You could try it though.

I'd like to comment on Nintendo's success with the DS. I think it's safe to say that the DS is wiping the floor with PSP now, and even I thought it would be the other way around. When the PSP was arriving I thought every single gamer out there would be toting one around on the street, and it turns out I don't know anyone who has a PSP. And with that extreme price I dont blame them.

I have criticized some of Nintendo's decisions in the past regarding their consoles, but I do have to say they chose the right marketing strategy for DS. By selling it at a lower price they are extending their user base even further. And now, the good games we've been waiting for are coming around the corner, like Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Castlevania.

Cute Puppys Sim... Nintendo can't go wrong... Nintendogs is all the rave around my workplace... this is coming from non-gamer who is talking about this...

Great Marketing on nintendos part... A price drop & Nintendogs on the same week.... than a kick-ass bundle in the fall.. along with free online-play plan... & lets not forgetting the other great DS game line up....

Nintendo in business... and still king of the handheld...

I just want Sony in raise the bar... and get off their high horse....

Yeah, I think Sony is asking for way too much. $50 games is still way too much.

If someone asked me 6 months ago who would be winning, I would've taken PSP over DS. Now it turns out Nintendo's quieter approach is actually better than Sony's more "aggresive" marketing campaign. The meek shall inherit the Earth?
might be worth buying when it hits $50 :D
buying a NINTENDO DS FOR 50 BUCKS!?!? pshh... maybe if the top screen didn't work.

OH great so its now confirmed that I wasted an extra $20 this week. fucking figures that less than 2 weeks after I buy mine that they would do a price drop.

DAMN YOU NINTENDO, DAMN YOUUUUUUUUUUU!

my cousin really wants one and had been begging me to take him to buy one. Something told me to wait and now he can thank me for saving him some money.

Thanks for the heads up tubtub, I'll probably get it before Animal Crossing comes out now. Of course now I'll have another system to hunt cheap games for, such pressure.

After selling my SP for $60 and buying a used DS+2 games for $100, I'm relatively happy with my upgrade for very little money. Unfortunately, my Ebayed DS's touchscreen is scratched up, but it seems to play fine. Until it's a major problem, I'll live with a few scratches.

I'll have to disagree with that. I really think price is overated when it comes to hardware sales. If people want games like Grand Theft Auto, they'll pay whatever is necessary to play it.

Over the last month the DS was $100 cheaper and plus you could get a free Mario game with it and the PSP still outsold the DS here in the States. Just wait until games like Grand Theft Auto are released this fall.

Also, many uninformed consumers take price drops as a sign of weakness and cheapness. It happened with the GameCube as people thought it was cheaper than the other consoles because it wasn't as powerful or good.

Anyway, I'm not trying to paint a doom and gloom picture for the DS (I have one and don't have a PSP) but a $20 price drop in no way is going to put Sony in trouble.
Let us not forget Tamagotchi, people ate that up.
People eat that up. They were hot last spring and a new version launched in late June/early July. We can barely keep them in stock.

Nope. There's only 45 days for a price match. The BPP is to protect you against a manufacturer defect. Becuase we all know Nintendo makes crappy hardware. o_O

Anyone interested in this, here is what you need to try doing.

Go to Wal-Mart where you'll likely find an Electric Blue DS still bundled with SM64DS. Put it in lay-a-way for $20-ish.

When the DS drops in a week or so, go back and try to get the $130 price on the bundle. :)

$1 says it'll work. :)
fuck gamestop.... give credit where it's due...
GameStop? You mean GameSpot.

I assume that's a typo and not the absence of the ability to read. ;)

Hey that is a good idea

what's this 20 dollar thing?
So you think people will pay $250 for a PSP plus $50 for GTA....just to play a new GTA? Doubtful. Some will, I'm sure, but not the masses.

This is a great deal for those who don't have a DS.

I wish I could somehow get $20 back from the DS I received on Christmas (I have the receipt and the replacement plan). *cries* $150 for the DS is worth it ofcourse but I could use the $20 to buy a game.
I don't mean to get off topic, but do you know anything about any new colors?
I was holding off getting a DS until it dropped in price and now that it will be, Im really wanting to get a black one, but they only come in that color in Japan. : ( Any news on whether the u.s. gets black soon or not?
Probably the earliest a new color will be out is Christmas... Based on their patterns thus far, it seems like Nintendo is rolling out one new color every 6-months or so (in the US).

There's probably no incentive for them to release more frequently then that because the DS is selling quite well already... I'm sure Nintendo will conter-act if Sony does something that spikes PSP sales (new colors, price drop, etc.).

Like you, I was holding out for the black (jet) DS but I got the Electric Blue DS recently. $150 with Mario 64 was too good a deal for me to pass up. Plus, there was little hope of the black DS getting released here any time soon. I didn't want to wait 6-months to a year just for a "color."

129.99 isn't too bad.. the whole duel screen thing is confusing to me. I did play the Nintendogs demo the other day at TRU and i was like impressed.... The only problem is that i see it going to be fun for awhile then get boring quick...I was amazed at SEAMAN for awhile, then I finally got him to evolve and escape into the jungle....never saw the poor guy again *sniff*

As someone mentioned above, it's possible to buy a $150 DS now (packaged with Super Mario DS) and then, when the price drops, go back and get the price difference.

AND

Go and sell Super Mario 64 DS for game credit, or maybe Walmart credit, if you're extra brave.

That's like getting a DS for around $100 then.

Hot deal if true!

I jumped on the $150 + Super Mario 64. I'm really glad I got it, i love this system, and there's tons of really good games to play on it already (and Advance Wars is coming out pretty soon). I'd definitely get one at $129 if i didn't already have one. My friend is picking up one when the price drops as well.
So you think people will pay $250 for a PSP plus $50 for GTA....just to play a new GTA? Doubtful. Some will, I'm sure, but not the masses.
Are you talking about the same masses that dished out $299.99 and 49.99 for a PS2 and GTA3 after hearing it was the "bomb-diggity" from their homes? Simple fact of life: never doubt the stupidity of the masses. GTA will sell PSPs, by the boat load.

I would agree with the PS2 example. A ton of people bought it, but for some reason I think the sceanrio is different for the PSP.

A console seems to just sell better than portables. I think portables is still considered a niche market and I am reluctant to say that the masses will buy PSP. (But the new GTA: Liberty City Stories might sell quite a few when it comes out)
I predict by Monday night this news will be on Gamspot.com.
Well, it's not on GameSpot just yet, but it is on Joystiq right now. My name's Dan Choi, and I'm one of the new bloggers for the site. Here's the link:

Before I get seriously flamed for posting this deal, however, I did talk directly to both CheapyD and tubtub to get their okays before posting. Hopefully, you'll find the proper credit given to the original poster and this site, as I've been a part of CAG a lot longer than I've been a part of Joystiq.com. I probably won't go to the lengths that I did to get people's permission before posting similar deals in the future, but it was good to get guidelines that were as official as guidelines can get before getting started.

Now I realize that not everyone's questions will be answered by this post, so I'll try to be as forthcoming as I can to those who respond to this message. Unfortunately, I won't be able to check messages again until sometime Sunday afternoon most likely, so please don't demand an immediate answer until then. You may have seen other entries I posted in a different thread on this site (which concerned a certain user by the name of manimal) to get a feel for what kind of reposting on a different site is acceptable and what's not. I hope that we can maintain that friendly level of discourse regarding any issues that are brought up.

Thanks for reading, and feel free to send me the best, hopefully well-referenced, news stories and scoops that you come across. As my PM inbox here at CAG could possibly fill up and stop accepting new messages, please send any ideas you may have to [email protected]. Have a good night, y'all, and I'm sure I'll hear back from you (in both good and bad ways) later. Sunday should be an interesting day.
PSP is expensive because of the movie features and others of course now if they took those out...
Sure. The screen or hardware that's pretty much on par with a PS2, only portable, has nothing to do with that.
