The switch 2 is not region locked. Nintendo is giving their home country a $100 discount if they elect to purchase a version that will only play Japanese region games. Regarding the back and forth joke, I don’t think it shows hate for America, the rest of the world, or themselves. It does kind of seem like a case of Japanese favoritism though. Also makes the pricing seem more questionable. How does putting in a region lock save $100? If it’s still profitable at that price, why is Nintendo charging the rest of the world more?

It's already been covered that companies are importing Switches (no region lock) from regions with lower prices to profit in regions with higher prices. The region lock is an attempt to prevent that as a practice so they can maintain price differences in other regions (and I'm sure they know some folks will find a way around it, but those don't wind up being sold directly by Amazon/woot in significant numbers).

Maybe its good will nationally for them to keep their home prices lower? Maybe in that region they sell more software so they can offset the price of the console? Do they get some incentive there? Who knows...

The bottom line is that Nintendo's data/finance analysts have run the sales projections and profits by region and this made the most financial sense to their analysts to maximize profits. They predict total profits will be higher with these prices.

It's not fun. Fun is Mario and Luigi sitting in a back room somewhere arguing about prices when Bowser bursts in, makes the US region an extra $100, and humorously kidnaps a lady to force her to marry him... you know. For kids.
 
I think there is a sort of illogical reasoning applied to a decision that may have also been cultural in nature versus rational.

Japan protects the the home market in multiple methods, to include incredibly harsh tariffs on any industry that may damage their own (ex. rice).

Therefore, I think NOJ may just be doing themselves a solid that they have more right to do so than any other country. It is a traditional isolationist approach to a nation that is traditionally isolationist in nature.
 
Really not hard to understand why a Japanese gaming company would want to bolster Japanese sales. and domestic install base. While also putting a damper on reverse-importation.

But you could explain it to people, the comparative unit sales numbers, and it would just go in one ear and out the other.
 
I don’t think Nintendo would actually care if people in Japan played their own games from different regions. So really, the region lock is just so the rest of the world cannot get the same discount they are giving Japan.

And can we take the shit talk to neogaf or resetera respectively, as your aligned echo chamber of choice.

Amazing there are still defenders of the logic of Iraq War 2 in 2025 (that was reference of the Poland joke ICYMI)

The region lock on the Japanese switch because of woot or consumers triangulating regional prices of Switch makes 0 sense. Japan already tends to have the cheapest games of any region. Makes absolutely no sense.

I still think the price difference has more to do with a more limited warranty than anything else, or perhaps a dash of cultural favoritism as kbob mentioned.

What did I misunderstand? I get what your latest shit post is referring to. In it’s context, let’s say Poland did justifiably feel slighted back then from a state leaders oversight. It is good that was immediately corrected by another state leader whose job it is to maintain diplomatic relations, even if you hate them. Poland is an important bulwark in containing Russia right now. Talk about butterfly effect, that could have been a pretty big butterfly actually.

Your failing to mention woot as an increasingly viable option for cheap switch imports is nowhere near as bad, so no, it’s not just like forgetting Poland. Go ahead and use some wacky alternate interpretation of the English language to misconstrue this as justifying warfare though, from your false high horse. You get what you give? You gave shit posts and you got Harambe posts back, thanks.

Every woot order I've had fulfilled has been a North American copy, how many people are honestly getting import versions of them, let alone the specifically Japanese ones?

Still cracking up at the idea of Nintendo bean counters shitting their pants over the amazon offshoot site that's difficult to navigate, or the average consumer who can somehow afford an international trip to freaking Japan of all places yet is worried about ten bucks or so here or there on a switch cart

Resetera has the same dumb requirement neogaf had where you can only sign up with a non-free email. So.. no Gmail allowed. Most people literally can't use resetera either. I guess it's one of the reasons it's an echo chamber, because the community is highly restricted, despite it being a popular forum.

Same way as Sony with the PS5. A ton of cross gen games that satisfies the need for large sales figures, but undermines the titles in such a fashion that makes the desire to buy the more powerful system reduced in some of the player base.

The PS5 still feels like the PS4 Pro Pro edition and it still doesn't have some of the features I liked, such as custom interfaces. I don't feel any of the games on it "couldn't have been done on PS4" except for maybe some of the very recent stuff, and that's only because the devs chose to use raytracing as the default render method or cranked the UE5 graphics to unnecessary levels.

Same thing will happen with Switch 2 likely, but now they'll be more cross gen ports where you go "yea, that's the Switch 2 version" if you have a PS5, XSX, or gaming PC, but also Switch 1 owners will get a lesser fidelity version and probably be like "yea, that's good enough."

That's a weird take given all of their headliners this year aside from Pokemon are exclusive, including Mario Kart, their best seller.

And even then Pokemon is ironically subverting expectations as GameFreak is normally slow when it comes to embracing next-gen. (Remember the disappointment of getting Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon?)

I don't know what they'll decide will be cross-gen, but their strategy is definitely to make their big guns exclusive so people are compelled to buy the Switch 2.

I have very little faith that this is true but according to a Walmart employee/ insider Switch 1 versions will get clearance pricing after Switch 2 launch. If this dudes not full of it that would be a pretty great deal. Never worked a retail job so not sure how this type of thing works. VIA NVC Facebook group

Also, Fantasy Life i having a $2.59 Switch 2 upgrade price is kind of more insulting than the others because it's just so gross. It released just a bit ago, has a PC/PS5 version, therefore should already have a "higher res" build.

So why nickel and dime your early adopters?

That's just "we can get await with it" pricing because it's "not as bad as the rest."

We're so cooked.

Meanwhile I got the Steam deluxe version for $45 and it runs great on steamdeck at max settings. Rune Factory might be another situation where I buy the steam version if it ends up being $60 vs $70 on switch 2.

Lite has been around for a while so the battery condition/deterioration of a used Lite (or switch for that matter) is an unknown.

My first switch was a Lite. If $100 for a new one is real (I have my doubts) I would buy one again. The lack of TV out is a serious weakness, but it's so portable and nice I would happily buy one again.

Something anecdotal, the walmart I mainly shop at removed about half of the stuff from the xbox section and moved the switch hardware to that area. So Switch section greatly expanded. They have everything up where the switch hardware was for Switch 2 but only took one case of the 3 or 4 from the switch games part for Switch 2 physicals. I was surprised they actually expanded the area for a game system. I'm not surprised XBox got cut back as it had already been known that stores were going to cut back stocking that stuff since it doesn't sell well at retail.

Does anyone else find it crazy that the NS2 is dropping in like a few days...? I honestly feels like from when it was revealed to its release, it's such a short window.

I'm not an early adopter for any console (I think the first and only console I got day 1 was the DS Lite) but just unreal how there's a new system coming out in a few days.

Nintendo may be having a hubris moment, and their pricing sucks, but PC gaming isn't a value proposition right now. And I think the NSW2 is likely more powerful than the Steam Deck.

The real deal, as you can even see here, is that people will buy it for the promise of Nintendo's first party offerings. Your favor of those series pretty much determines a large buy in from a faithful crowd.

Will watch the video a bit later. Everyone's aware I'm critical of buying in on promises and zero reviews, but I expect the main release to sell out. Whether they maintain the inertia of the original Switch is partially dependent on large economic variability in the world's largest gaming market (for now; is China #1 now?).

No one who wants COD, FIFA, 2K Sports, etc. will be getting it unless the want Mario, Zelda, etc. I just wonder if Gen Z and Gen Alpha have a similar interest in those names versus it being a millennial market.

Regardless, it'll sell boatloads. And if it doesn't, then they'll 3DS it ...

Edit: Re: time to launch, I imagine it might feel short for some of you, but the NSW2 was the worst kept system launch in a long time. The leaks, including hardware pictures, have been happening a good while before the official announcement.

While I agree that time flies when you're worried about the fall of democracy having fun discussing the new toy, it's definitely been a long time coming.
 
Who knows if it actually will sell out or not though. Past precedent aside did any other video game console launches have a situation currently like this one? They may very well between the economy and possibly getting ahead of it have already stocked a surplus. We also don't know if it's gonna be a ps5 situation where there's very few exclusives to it specifically. Signs thus far point to still supporting the switch 1 what with it having a huge install base, for a few years at least.
