Kotaku new a new article up with some nice quotes from Keita Takahashi's GDC session:

Noby Noby Boy may be a little bit "crazy," but its creator says he's very normal. "I don't use drugs at all. I don't drink," game creator Keita Takahashi contends. "Please, don't worry about me."

The man behind Noby Noby Boy and Katamari Damacy delivered one of GDC's most fascinating sessions this week, full of behind-the-scenes insights into the creation of the PlayStation Network game and off-message rants.

Let's take a look at some of the most enjoyable quotes that will likely have Takahashi meeting with his more buttoned down superiors at Namco Bandai when he returns to Japan.

On his early concepts for Noby Noby Boy: "I showed one programmer [my drawings], and he said ‘Yes, I've been thinking about these kinds of things as well.' He showed his wife, and she said ‘You should work on this as though your life depended on it.' We have a collection of crazy people working on it."

On Noby Noby Boy's design: "I wanted to show an ironic point of view about our consumption-based society. But I wanted to make more objects. If [the game] were empty, I would feel empty or lonely. When I made Katamari Damacy and objects were rolled up into a ball, they were gone. I felt empty. I feel this way about our disposable society."

On disappointment with games having rules: "Katamari Damacy had rules, meaning you wanted to have a huge katamari. So there was a size goal and a time limitation as well. I didn't want that. The stages increased in size [as the game went on], something I didn't like."

On unforeseen Noby Noby Boy development: "I wanted to create a game where even the developers couldn't see what was coming. Of course I wasn't thinking about debugging at this point. The people who did the debugging asked me what was a bug. I couldn't answer that."

On players on a train: "In Japan, everyone on the train is playing a Nintendo DS or PSP. They're always looking down at their consoles, bleeping and blooping. Of course, that's good for the people who make games, because we make money from it. But is this how we want people to look?"

On users versus players: "Hiyao Miyazaki, the film director, says that children today are not playing, they're consumers. I think that's true. In Japan, people who play games are called 'users.' I think games should be played. Perhaps it's minute, but that bothered me. We just throw around the term users and that bothers me."

On workplace violence: "People who come to the company call them users and I that makes me so mad I want to bonk them! Sometimes I think they should die."

On sales: "Maybe I should make sure that Noby Noby Boy should only be available on PlayStation 3 and only available by download. That way, maybe it won't sell that much. It's only been available for a month or so, but I was right! It's not selling that much. That's probably not a good thing."

On Noby Noby Boy's homegrown physics engine: "I was going to use Havok physics, but I if you use it, you have to show their logo. I didn't want to do that. I thought it would be awful to have to put a logo on the game every time. We used physics from SCE instead. But I still had to put the Namco Bandai logo [on it]."

On the game's long development cycle: "People higher up were really mad at me. Some of them really glared at me if they saw me in the hall."

On goals in Noby Noby Boy: "Despite the fact that I said there are problems with having definite goals, Noby Noby Boy has a definite goal as well. That goal is to take this character, this space Girl, this huge character and make her longer by communicating to her the size of the Boy. The goal is to connect the solar system. Why did I create a goal like this? Because it's such a huge goal, I thought it might be hard to reach."

If you go to the PSN store's Spring Fever section you'll randomly see a better photo of the Boy scarf on the left! I wish I could take a screenshot.

54 B-B-B-B-B-BILLION MORE METERS!??!?!?!

Good gad. SeinfeldImOut.gif

When does the multiplayer update drop? If that will allow for 4x multiplication of stretches then I'm back in the game. Damn I want to hit Mars.

Also it it just me or does Keita seem really depressed?

Well, let's see- he makes Katamari about ramapant consumerism... and we rush to buy it and demand sequels and soundtracks and merch. He makes a largely goal-less game, to try and get us to just 'play'... and most people either don't get the point or just grab it for easy trophies.

I can understand why he might seem a lil' down about all of it...

Exploit? If that exploit helps us get to Mars and other planets a lot faster, than I suggest you spill the beans. We must get Girl to Pluto!

Its on my blog. Hold on.

The Auto Method

This was actually discovered by someone over at GameFAQs so I can't take credit for it. Make sure the controller auto-off function is disabled, PS2 sleep mode is disabled and your controller is plugged in via USB. What you want to do first, and this is important, is find a level without a lot of moving objects. Keep regenerating repeatedly until you find a calm level. Mushrooms, tops, robots, cars, Katamari, etc. are all your enemy. You don't want anything in the level to be smashing into you and breaking the stretch.

Once you have a good level generated pick a spot near the house. Get some packing tape and tape down the L2 and R2 buttons. Once they're taped, press in and hold down the right analog stick. If your legs are spaced correctly then the game should make you snap in and out of shape repeatedly, driving your length up like crazy. I leave my controller propped up against some scrap wood with a heavy book on top. Make sure you go into your house every other day or so to store all of that length if you don't want to report it all at once. This method nets me roughly 860KM per day.

^ i should have thought about that when people did this sort of stuff for Super Paper Mario (running the damn hamster wheels to earn money).

His interview was great, as always. Sounds like version 1.1 was closer to the version he actually wanted, but ran out of time in implementing. Can't wait to hear the new soundtrack tonight, farting Japanese and all!

wow!

this game went from me liking it to me loving it.

IMHO all sites that reviewed it need to re-review it now. It use to be kinda worth the $5 and now more than worth it.

The new music options rock as well...

so far noticed:

-People actually talk now
-signs... alot
-when you eat phrases or words when you "fart" them out the game says the word or thing
-music options (start+left) rock... was sorely needed
-Music can be muffled if you eat boy or girl speakers

still alot more than that but great.

i forced my mom to play 2 player and she was too weirded out by it but it was awesome.

Sooo glad that I can hear that amazing Noby Noby Boy song during gameplay. When you uhhh... "fart" things out, does it actually say what the item is or is it just giberish?

It actually says it even though is sounds like gibberish.

Well I played around with this a while tonight. I like a lot of the new features but I'm not really so happy about the length exploit being taken out. Without it, I can safely guarantee we'll never reach Mars so there's no point in that goal anymore. It's time to just have fun.

For those wondering, Synchro Boy is activated as follows:
Enter the house
Press and hold R1 and L1, then press R2 and L2
It will spit you back out along with another boy

Some little bastard (kidding) at Gamespot discovered my method for growth in the new update. Before you go accusing me, keep in mind that my numbers can be tracked at the evilrobot apps site and I showed big numbers before the kid posted this morning.

Anyways now that it's in the open here's the new method:

Start a new game. Make sure your house's hairstyle is NOT the angled ring sticking up. This comes into play later.

Find a level with lots of different objects. Get fat. I'm talking so fat you're eating clouds, buildings and rainbows. Then stretch until you're at about 1200+ meters long. Easy enough, right?

Now just keep regenerating levels until you have one where NOBY house is on the edge or corner of the level. Once you have one just press the triangle button and you'll burst out the top of the house. A good chunk of your body should fall off the side of the level, dragging you into oblivion. This will yield huge results...roughly 70k per hour or about DOUBLE the automated method being used before the update. You read that right. DOUBLE.

Make sure you don't get a level that's too small or that's long and skinny. I got a moon level once that was a single block. I kept falling off too much and not getting enough grip which meant very little growth. On the long and narrow levels you'll just keep straddling the level and either not growing or snapping in half.

That's it. If anyone tries this with Synchro BOY or Multi BOY and gets better results, let me know.

One more thing. Some guy over at NeoGAF is claiming he got a message saying we have about 77 million meters more until Mars. Much as I'd like to believe him there are no other corroborating reports. I wish Takahashi would just tell us how much further we have to go.

Keep up the good work! Hehe, what's your length now?
What's the gap between you and 2nd place? I'm assuming you're still NUMBER ONE.

About 20 million or so. Unfortunately I wasn't around today or will be tomorrow so I'm losing out on a lot of potential length.

However I should be able to babysit my machine a lot this weekend and hopefully put up some BIG numbers by the end of the week.

The final multiplier is 108 million. If you're looking to add some serious length to your total today is the day to do it.

After today we should should be about a third of the way to Mars. Hopefully this will get Keita to add in some bonuses permanently.
