Official Gears of War 2 Discussion Thread
^ This.

Gears has more emotion in its soundtrack than Halo has in any medium of its franchise.
If we are talking just strictly music, Halo's music is much more memorable and awe inspiring than that of Gears 2.

When it came down to it, Halo didn't have that good enough of a narrative or overall musical experience. The hype and overall wow-factor filled in those gaps though. And let's face it, no one at that time would admit that.

Beat the game on my solo play through on normal. Phenomenal from start to finish. Seemed easier than the first (as has my on-going co-op playthrough on Hardcore with my friend), though it may just seem easier after playing through the first one on Insane over the summer.

But in all, it was definitely better than the first. Much more epic, with a lot of kick ass sequences. I loved the
Brumak section
toward the end.

Now I'll give the online modes a shot as I just played a bit of horde and online last weekend, along with getting my buddy over to finish our hardcore playthrough and eventually get through it on Insane as well.

In a way im glad the online in gears 2 is so broken, i never feel like playing it and have been going through my backlog to catch up. Thanks for sucking epic.

Patches are definitely coming, but still. Why did they not beta test this game? It is a necessity for every game that has a strong multiplayer component.

lag is unbelievable... it really makes me wonder if my shots are hitting. i miss melees because of lag. come on now.

still waiting to find a good team though
really tired of people not knowing what it means to flank.

Does anyone else hate using the fucking A button to pick up guys for shields? I keep getting killed as i dive past them instead of picking them up. I can't rely on it during a firefight.

Stop moving.

Man, Horde is pretty damn fun, but goddammit each time I play alone I'm stuck with dumbass teammates. It's like I literally got to save their measly carcasses, while they run in and try and chainsaw someone with a shotgun. That or when I do need them, no where to be friggin found.

Though I do feel good about myself when I score over a 1,000 some compared to their 100 or whatever.
Stop moving.
What? When I am rushing to pick up someone downed while under gunfire, "Stop Moving" isn't an option.
What? When I am rushing to pick up someone downed while under gunfire, "Stop Moving" isn't an option.
Yes. It is.

Your only option is to stop moving. The meatshield will protect you from the gunfire.

If you keep moving, you'll roll and get shot and die.
I'll try it. Wish I could re-map the button. Then I would complain about something else.
I know you can remap running and wall grabbing to a different button, I'm not sure if that would change the situation, but you might want to look into it.

Finally gave MP a go last night. Well one match, I gave up after 10 minutes of the second match not loading. What a broken P.O.S.
That is an opinion, so everyone should stop trying to say which is better...
Thanks Mr. Obvious.

Got to the first retarded part in Insane co-op last night.

First, the mother of all aggrivating glitches. In the tunnel part with the Tickers in the middle of Landown. When we reloaded, I had no enemies, no cars for cover, and the tunnel wasn't even dark. I could see the teammates and see them shoot, but nothing else. I couldn't see Betty or the lights, but it didn't matter as the tunnel was completely lit. I could still be killed by the Tickers though and by rockets from the Reaver.

The next part where you split up, we must have died 15 times because Tai ran out ahead and died and then crawled away from me and I'd get 1-shot bashed from a grunt while trying to revive him.

I really hate Meleeing in this game now. Half the time I do it auto orients me and I get disoriented.

For example: If you melee someone running past you, you will automatically face him until your melee animation finishes. Don't like that.

On another note, I've decided I'd rather lose than use the chainsaw, so I'm a hammerburst guy now.

No idea what I was thinking playing Wingman all this time. Everything Else > Wingman...I opened up to playing different matches last night...absolutely love Annex, Guardian, and Submission...and of course Warzone and Execution. Had some good times last night, but I am starting to see that the chainsaw is pretty much unbeatable, I've noticed this by doing a melee and then immediately being chainsawed by the other guy, and I experienced this when somoene shot me with a shotgun and I was still able to saw.

I told you that a long time ago.

I know, I remember you mentioning it...should have listened.

I guess I liked the idea of a good partnership team going up against everyone else, but the spawning points are horrible. Those who spawn next to good weapons tend to win the match everytime.

They apparently didn't fix the overly aggressive squad AI from the first Gears. Your squad dudes run out way too far ahead of you, block your shots, and get killed. They should be there to support the player and not get in the player's way. In fact, the AI needs to be simply hard-coded to make sure that they are always behind the players when possible.

Take the right path. I found it much easier to take out the Brumak that way as it was harder for him to hit me.

Eh, I am starting to feel other modes than wingman, too, as it is much easier to own people in the elimination playlist.

Ranking system explained by Epic staff:

Let’s take a moment to look over the ranking system in Gears of War 2, to make sure everyone understands what they’re looking at when they check out other players online. Your rank in Gears of War 2 multiplayer is based on your TrueSkill rating, which calculates the relative strength of all players on Xbox LIVE.

GearsofWar2_TrueSkillRanks.jpg

There are five ranks total, and the first rank is achieved after you play your first multiplayer match. The more Gears 2 matches you win, the higher your rank will be, and your rank will go down when you lose matches. Rank is not affected by Horde Mode and private matches. The ranks are displayed in game using the icons to the left.
TrueSkill is like the chess ELO system, which tries to predict who should win the match based on the skill of the players. If you were predicted to lose and your team wins, then your TrueSkill goes up more than if you won and you were predicted to win. This holds true for the inverse scenario: If you were predicted to win and you lose, then your ranking drops more than if you were predicted to lose.
Rank is not a constantly increasing value, such as is typical in role-playing games (RPGs). Your rank may plateau or even drop as it closes in on your correct and accurate skill level. It will probably take tens of Public Xbox LIVE matches for your rank to move in one direction or another, and it may even take hundreds of matches to achieve a skill with the highest rank we offer, assuming you are good enough to get there.
Also, keep in mind that each rank icon represents a specific range or bucket of TrueSkill values, so while your skill is fluctuating in very small increments from match to match, your rank icon will only change when your skill moves from one bucket to the next. Therefore, your rank is not just about number of kills or experience or the amount of time played. It's an aggregated representation of your skill level based on your wins and losses during Public Xbox LIVE matches. And yes, quitting will lower your rank.

I've played in Public Matches...4 times, and Public Horde 12 times. Needless to say, I've won 2 Public Matches, and 0 Horde Matches. Yet when I look at the Gears Stat page, I've clearly gone 0-12.

Yeah...system broken.

Really? Well I guess they updated it. They're still counting Horde matches though. I haven't played that many Public Matches.

anyone have some online tips for a noob?

i get chainsawed about 90% of the matches i've played, sometimes die from a single shotty shot
i shoot people like 3 times with the shotty and dont even down them, once in a while i'll have a good game and get some kills(most likely playing other noobs)

also beat the game on insane, one of the best campaigns i've played this year

Currently the chainsaw is overpowered. You can't really knock someone out of it like in gears 1. Your best bet is to keep diving back and use the shotgun. Or just equip your chainsaw and duel it out.

The shotgun is a little inconsistent for me. I honestly haven't figured out how to use it most effectively. aiming helps, but most don't and just blind fire.

Played through the training modes and trying to hop online. First time I've tried solo, the other times I accepted invites from CAGs.

10 minutes and counting and still not in a match yet. So I see what all the bitching was about. This is lame.

If anyone's on add me (dmaul1114) and send me and invite, most on my friends list are playing CoD: WaW.

The best strategy in most online shooters is to hang back. Don't rush into the fight, you will be picked off easily by more experienced players.

1. Don't rush in. Hang back and try to follow someone and act as backup. Also, if you are downed, they may easily revive you.

2. Learn the maps in practice mode with bots. Learn where the special weapons spawn.

3. DO NOT use the chainsaw unless you are alone with a single player. If you chainsaw and enemy, chances are his teammates will be close and chainsaw you right back.

4. Learn how to use the shotgun without aiming with L.

5. Use cover and when in tight corners with an enemy bounce from wall to wall while shooting the shotgun, this will make it hard for them to take you down.

You can still set people back if they're revving up their chainsaw, but I found out it only works best with the Hammerburst and any of the pistols. Shotgun is very inconsistent in offsetting the chainsaw, but not at all as a close-range weapon. People aren't adjusting in using the new shotgun and use it as if it was the one from Gears 1 (either in blindfiring or quick-aiming with the shotgun). The best way to use the shotgun is to aim, and keep aiming. The whole hold-LT-for-a-second-and-fire doesn't work in Gears 2 butif you aim, your shots become waaay accurate. One active can down someone and it works wonders in mid-range battles. Shotgun in cover is really strong too.

Umm I would ignore everything here except the follow your team part. This is Gears 2 not 1 wall bouncing/shotgun hipfire do not work well at all and the Chainsaw is great even when the other team is around unless your solo.

Finally finished the game.

Loved the blood spray from chainsawing iron cables in the last act  . Kind of sad that the hammer of dawn is a no show for 95% of the game too (same with multiplayer). And I only saw one seeder, at the end.

Seeders were definitely in the tank areas, and you see lots of Nemacyst (which come out of Seeders butts).
My biggest miss is no more BERZERKER! :( :( :(

Great game, but I guess the folks on my friends list just aren't into it. Two nights in a row from 8-9:30 EST, nobody is playing. I was able to get into some random Horde matches, and they were great, but I want to play with people that are willing to organize, form a plan, etc. Anyway, if you aren't on my friend list, send me an invite and look for me just about every night at the time set forth above.

That's because multiplayer is beyond broken. Who wants to sit and wait for a match for 10 minutes?
