Official Gears of War 2 Discussion Thread
I wish I hadn't traded my Gears 1 away.

Gears 2 is a game designed to be a "stop and pop" game that has devolved into a shotgun rush game. I haven't even bought the new maps yet because I'm not sure I can stomach any more shotty BS.
Have you played Gears 1?

i just jumped on some horde mode today and i noticed they added a leveling system. is there any perks to that or is it just to show how long youve been playing. would anyone be intrested in going through the entire game co op with me? i want to do it on insane. and i wish they sold the deleted scene by itself for like 100 points or something. i really dont want to buy all the maps to play it

I'm somewhere in Chapter 4 and I'm on Hardcore difficulty. Question: If I wanted to do co-op, could somebody join me from where I am or would I have to start over?

If they can just join in on where I am, would anybody like to play through the remainder of the game with me? I'm not very good and I'd love some help. Not sure why I chose Hardcore difficulty. Haven't played in months but I'd love to get back into it.

Somebody could join you if you set it to be that way. You can set it to open or you can invite a friend.

A bonus for Gears 2 is that while you play on Hardcore, someone else can play on a lower difficulty.

Horde Mode Update:
- Allfathers Garden Wave 30 (10,000 XP from Lv. 30)
- Flood Waves 5-10
- Gold Rush Waves 6-10
- Way Station 1-20
- Nowhere 28-50
- Memorial 14-40

If I remember right you can host a game and start from where you left off.

Tons. And the shotgun was a problem there as well, now that I think about it. But for some reason it's "problem" is more obvious in Gears 2.

I think, in Gears 1, the shotgun has even more range though.

I need to get a group together to do 1-10 on Gold Rush, 1-20 on Way Station, and...25-30 on Allfathers Garden on Horde. Who wants to play?

I would do it if they brought back double XP for horde.

Does anyone want to run through the co-op campaign guns blazing right now?

So here’s a question, maybe one of you can help answer. I had something happen to me last night in a game of Guardian that I don’t understand. Both leaders were dead, and we were down to 2-on-2, on the River map. I was holding a Lancer, and I saw one of my opponents, holding a shotgun. I was next to the little house where the grenades spawn, on the grassy side, he was on the street-side. I saw him head towards the house, presumably to get to me. So I held down B, revved up my chainsaw, and walked around the corner into to the house, expecting to run into him, and either get one-shotted by his shotgun before I could make contact, or else to chainsaw him. Instead, *I* got chainsawed, without even getting into a chainsaw duel. Obviously he switched weapons on me, but if I’m holding and revving my chainsaw, how do I not at least get into a duel before I get sawed? And no, he didn’t get me from behind, it was a standard front animation. Maybe he or his partner managed to shoot me one time, that I didn’t even notice, before he got me with the saw? But it happened too fast for him to have done that. Any ideas? That death cost me the match, and it bugged me a little… Thanks!

I'm thinking about purchasing All Fronts collection, but I'm looking for 4 other players for Horde and one other for coop in Road to Ruin chapter. Anyone interested?

I've got all the achivements for Dark Corners except the co-op deleted scene. Well, that and I'm not level 40 or 50 for the other two (level 31 for the record), so I'd be willing to help anyone who would also be interested in running the game co-op style (casual would work just to rush through it), I've actually gotten past the worm on co-op, so we can start there if you're already done. Let me know, send me the friends request and mention CAG otherwise I may ignore it. I'm off next week, so I've got time.

I deleted my cache from my hard drive because I wanted to see how bad the smokes were before the recent update. So after playing a few rounds in horde I was like "Smokes kill Sires?". After remembering how cheap the smokes were, I updated GOW2 and then the worst thing imaginable happened, my rank...it got reset...to LEVEL 1! I thought it was some glitch so I played a match online, thinking my rank would go back to normal afterward, but at the end of the match I was a level 2. I thought the reason was because of the update. So then I erased the cache again, played a game with bots, updated GOW2, and I was a level 1 again. That sucks because I was a rank 43 or something and now it's gone. I think I'm done playing this lame game.

Got from wave 1-50 in a public game of Horde last night on the No Where Map and was hoping I'd get the cheezmint, but remembered I had to be on level 50 to get it (only on 34). Getting the horde achievements are going to take longer then I had first thought.

Hah I'm level 49 and am 2000 points away from 50! Can't seem to find the time to play though. I'll be looking for some partners for Nowhere on Monday, though.

Oh man... so many wonderful people to thank and so little time to punch all those responsible for delaying the following news: Execution and Warzone have finally been isolated and added to the Map Pack rotation!1!1!11!!!

WIN-fuckING-RAR.

Not sure why,but last night. It normally shows Combustible/Snowblind/Dark Corners under the game mode. Last night it showed Dark Corners. Like I didn't have Combustible/Snowblind when I do. Also played one game, and got 0 points for it which was awesome... :bomb:

Yup, there is no longer a dedicated Flashback, Combustible, or Snowblind playlist, but there ARE new lists for Annex/KotH, Guardian/Submission, and Execution/Warzone on Map Packs. Also a list for Annex Achievement, which is Flashback and Combustible only Annex. I suppose that's a good way to change things up, and make it easier to get the game type you're looking for. Personally, I'm not a fan of Execution, so this makes it easier to avoid. What would really be nice, though, would be a dedicated Submission playlist, to make some progress on the achievement for 10 meatflag captures. Everyone almost always votes for Guardian (which I enjoy a lot, actually), but it's difficult to get a Submission game going.

Yeah I noticed that last night. I wish they would have kept it the way it was. I was starting to enjoy those snowblind maps.

what the hell Epic? they keep messing with the playlists. okay to please everyone, there should be the old playlists, playlists for each map pack, and playlist for each gametype.

I don't think it's a great idea to have "achievement" playlists since they'll be empty once every gets them. or people will abuse the fact that new players want to get achievements so will farm wins/exp against them :D
Same thing happened to me but I didn't even clear my cache. Recovered my girlfriend's gamertag on my 360 and in the first match I got her level 25 achievement and after we turned it off and came back to the game I was back at level 1. Stupid. I was only a level 18 or something when it happened but I can't even imagine how pissed I would be if I were a really high rank. :bomb:

Hi got a quick question,

GS just sent out an email concerning the GoW2: Goty edition.

http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=75730&affid=3000&WT.mc_id=082509nl

http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/g...-9115-d8024d53082d/?p=1&of=3&bt=0&sb=1#offers

Does this edition include everything currently on xbox live? Anything new?

Thanks alot!

Edit: Looking at the box art from gamestop looks like the extra maps/downloads aren't on a disc but on a download card. Too bad this GOTY couldn't be like Oblivion GOTY.

It looks like it includes all the map packs and the deleted scene. From the description though it doesn't appear there is anything new being added. Not sure they will release any new content at this point for Gears 2 as they have maxed out their achievement point allotment of 1750 but anything is possible.

Thanks I know nothing about Gears of War 2 but this GOTY edition looked tempting. It looks like it includes everything but Dark Corners. The back of GoW2 : GOTY edition said the download would be 825MB through xbox live. I believe the Oblivion GOTY you downloaded directly from the disc but don't remember.

I really never was a multi-player type person until a little over a year ago. I bought Gears 2 on release day, and beat the campaign. Then messed around with multi from time to time. I even quit playing it for a few months, but now I play it almost everyday, and its easily one of my favorite games no doubt. All the new map packs don't make it seem like a whole new game, but it does refresh it and make me want to play it that much more.

Has anybody noticed a difference in the connections since the new play-lists? Maybe its just me, because I don't remember there being an update, but it seems like they did something to reduce bullet lag. Its almost like they made it so it would look like you weren't lagging even if you were--or something. I keep playing in games where it seems like I have a good connection but my shotgun doesn't do crap--even when people are standing still it does 1/3 to 1/2 normal damage. I was reading something on epic's Gears forum that there might actual data loss and not just bullet lag from a bad connection....so essentially it might seem like you're getting off a really good shot but actually only a few if any of the bullets might actually be firing off at all.

I just played a game of submission where the meat shield glitched. I saw when he glitched too, I shot a boom shot at him that didn't down him and then right away my teammate somehow glitched a chainsaw battle with the meat shield and the meat shield guy was using his shotgun in the battle =P After that you couldn't down him.

Im really hating some of the decisions that they made in this game. Like i just went 23 kills and 8 deaths and i ended up getting 0 points because i was host. This after having countless rounds of lag, and me getting hardly any kills during those rounds. This isnt the first time that happened either. It makes leveling up harder. Then i get -1500 points sometimes because my game freezes, or my internet stops and i get disconnected.

I absolutely hate smoke grenades. I hate how they make you freeze defenseless for easy kills. Why didnt they keep them the way they were in old school weekend. That was way way waaaaaaaaaaaaaay better.

Really? Does the host always get 0 points? I rarely bother looking at the points I receive after a match.

I'm getting pretty tired of the lag in this game. Probably half the games I play I run into the situation where I shotgun people at point-blank range to no effect, then they blast me right back at the same range and kill me. Last night I shotgunned a guy in the back three times before he reacted, then he turned around and downed me with a single melee. I'm assuming that's a lag issue, but I also get the more traditional lag where the game stutters and my character teleports around the board as the animations catch up to what's going on.

People keep yelling about lag switches when it gets really bad - is there any way to know when a lag switch is in use, or are they just guessing?

Lag switches come in all colors, flavors, shapes and sizes nowadays. Unless you've been victim to it on multiple occasions or pre-updates you probably aren't going to notice or even know what the hell you're talking about until it's too late. Cheaters have naturally almost turned the damn process into an art as they've grown more smooth and that much more irritating. Not every laggy game is victim of a lag switch though - it could just be a shitty host connection.

The classic lag switch was usually done by the host (which probably bridged to get it in the first place) enacting a sort of 'time stop' in the game where it appeared you were the only moving player on the map at the moment of activation. Everyone else was stuck running in place when in fact you too were sucked into it. Soon after the perpetrator would run around the map killing off the entire apposing team then turning it off on their modded Xbox to let the game end the round as if nothing happened. Usually this bullshit stunt then would enact a permanent spell of horrid lag for everyone (their team included) except them for the remainder of the game afterward.

Unfortunately those lag switches are few and between as again the damn cheaters were forced to evolve as more updates and patches were released to the point where that version in particular is nearly extinct. Now cheaters can pull them off so smooth where you'll barely notice unless you KNOW your team is hosting thereby usually ruling out a shitty host connection. They mainly lag just enough either freeze the game for a few seconds to score a free kill (or they screw it up entirely then turn it off but still end up lagging up the game) or to enact bullet lag so most of your shots miss them while they frolic about the map demolishing everyone else. Regardless most of the time no matter the type of switch you could count on the game lagging from then on for both teams except the culprit until now.

The most sophisticated lag switch I've come in contact with was so damn smooth only my team was effected while our opponents ran on a near LAN-tier connection. His/Her lag switch lagged out everyone in our team so while we could run, shoot and roll with very little lag we couldn't actually hit or chainsaw a damn thing to save our lives. You could imagine how frustrating and blatantly obvious it was considering we were playing a damn Annex match to begin with. Every respawn the lag got worse and any time we got near a ring if the opposing team wasn't already there it took all of us to capture it because of the LS. It got to the point where even the chainsaw vacuum was completely nerfed because a guy from our team stood next to one of them saw revved for a few seconds and nothing would happen. Even our melee wouldn't hit them. Total f*cking garbage.

Needless to say we cussed them out afterward and reported everyone on that team multiple times. Unless it is an extremely poor switch (and therefore obvious) or you've been a victim of it in the past you simply just aren't going to know. You just have to either guess or pay attention to the rest of your team and how they're fairing in the game. Most of the time it's just a shitty connection hosting. Best way to tell is if a poor player who has been getting smacked around is suddenly omnipotent and now shots are going through him, but the connection is fine and he isn't host then I would start suspecting a lag switch.

I think it would also help if they implemented two things that COD has:

1. Ping indicator in lobby and in-game (maybe they don't so people are less likely to know they are host if they ignore/don't know the other tell-tale signs)
2. Search for games in your local area (probably not too great since sometimes it's hard enough to just find an opposing team "with similar skill").

Also, I find it strange that I only occasionally end up host given that I have a 30Mbps down/5Mbps up connection last time I checked. I haven't played any GOW2 in a while and damn do I feel the itch now but it'll have to wait until after PAX :D

Why does the game give you 0 points when you're host sometimes? That has definitely happened to me, I wonder if its related to the connection of the host. Usually my connection is 16/2.5 but I know a few weekends ago my upload was only around 1-1.5 for a day.

Seems like when I do really well. It gives me 0 points, and I don't do anything different. I'm not sure why that is.

The game has a mediocre lag detection system that's why. If while hosting your connection is severely lagging other players the game will assume a lag switch is to blame and refuse to award you any points. The problem is it sucks. Frequently it seems unable to differentiate between actual lag switching and poor connections. That's why some of you are getting short changed out of the blue when you aren't at fault. I've only had it happen once.

I think it would be cool to have a hardcore mode. To cut out all this cheap bullshit this game has.

No Chainsawing
No Meatshield
No Smoke nades that stun
No Planting frags
No Melee attacks

Thanks for the detailed reply!

I had something like this happen a couple of weeks ago, in Annex on River. The other team got a perfect 180/180, and we were nearly unable to damage them. Our team ended up with less than 10 kills total, and that was including a couple of spawn kills when one of their guys stopped playing for a couple of minutes. The only kills we could manage were an occasional chainsaw from behind. It was extremely frustrating, needless to say.

Excellent! I'll be up for playing some matches. I still need alot of the map pack achievements, but the grind is too much at times at the base exp levels. Anyone, feel free to invite me. I'm willing to boost.

Also the clear cache thing didn't glitch on me. I cleared my hard drive a week or so ago, loaded up gears on another gamertag, got the update, back to dash, powered off, turned xbox back on, loaded up my gamertag, loaded the game, and my level 42 with all the achievement progress were still there.

500 XP is a nice bonus but I just got 4000 XP in a game of Guardian where most of my team intentionally avoided killing the leader and we let them tie it up 2 - 2.

In theory it'd be nice to have a more sophisticated method of deciding a host, but the problem is that a lot of people would never get to host, and people that could afford $100-200/mo internet would almost always get host except for possibly cheating, and there would most likely be even more of that. Really though they should just stop connecting people from different regions of the world. Basically any time the host is in Europe, Asia, or South America I lag.

Cool, looks like I'll be playing some this weekend. If any CAGs want to play hit me up with an invite. Still need meatshields/guardian/wingman and level 50 achievements.

I'd also be down to do the 1st round of security on Insane to get my 500 xp in 30 seconds to boost levels.

Hmm, 400 XP per round of public horde...

So, who's up for some Horde this weekend? :D

I might have heard wrong...but I think Hardcore Horde will yield the same amount of xp as Insane would. so basically double xp Hardcore will equal double xp Insane for this event.

Glock, I'm down for some of that Security Horde. I have you added so will just invite/join if I see you on

anyone have exact times for the event?
