Ugh...not a great night of hockey last night. I don't know why, but we just seemed flat most of the night. We ended up finishing 6-3-1, but we were fortunate to play some really bad teams (though I think we only won one or two games by more than one goal). Part of it was crappy goaltending. There were several times when we'd score, then the other team would come back down the ice, take a shot, and the goalie would just miss it.
But we fell back into some bad habits as well. Alan mentioned some of it, but this is what I noticed.
1. Forcing plays that aren't there
This means both cross crease attempts and just charging the puck in. If either of these are going to result in a turnover that gets us caught moving the wrong direction, get more creative. In the end, a bad shot is always better than a bad turnover.
2. Passing
Passing in general was mostly terrible all night. We struggled to stay at 60%. This also has largely nothing to do with how many points you have in this area. Think about what you're doing and make sure your aim is right. This goes for both forwards and defensemen, but a lot of the time, the reason we have trouble getting a rush going is because a bad outlet pass is made. It really sucks to make a great defensive play only to erase it by making a shitty pass.
3. Holding onto the puck too long
This can be forwards in the offensive zone just skating the puck around looking for a pass, defensemen at the point taking too long to shoot, or skaters in our own zone letting opposing players get too close before getting rid of the puck. We need to do a better job of seeing what the right play is and making it. Again, anything is better than a turnover...even icing.
One more thought I had about passing that everybody needs to remember is just because a teammate is doing something that WOULD be a good play doesn't mean it IS a good play. If the other team knows what they're doing on defense, there's a good chance they're covering it (cross crease, long pass up the boards, etc). If I'm crashing the net for what could be a cross crease (or streaking up the boards) and there are two guys on me, don't give it to me. But having two guys on me is great because it means someone else is wide open. We just gotta be less predictable and make the smart play.
