Matt doesn't need to sit in a tree. He's got a key to Gary's back door.

I'd be up for some games tonight if anyone wants to play. I'll probably be on around 10 PM EST, so just send me a message if you feel like playing.

Ha! Tested out my Under Armour Compression shorts and hockey socks. FREAKING AMAZING! Not an ounce of sweat and I played hard today. Was really warm while playing also. So don't worry same amount of clothes, just a better brand. I'm up for 10pm!

I like the Bazinga reference! :D

Should be on around that time, wife is currently watching Fringe on the PS3, but it should be over by then.

Also, apologies for leaving almost in the middle of a sentence. I was exhausted, and I think my brain was just shutting down, as well as the xbox.
I don't know how many of you guys are on facebook, but EA asked what improvements they could make in NHL 12. What's sad is that I saw GOALIE FIGHTING at least 5 times in a quick scan.

http://www.facebook.com/easportsnhl/posts/183388808365084
Ooh! Thank you for posting that, stat. I doubt they'll actually read it (considering there's already almost 1500 comments), but I added my two cents.

Needed Improvements: AI players who know what they're doing and possess basic hockey fundamentals (positioning, passing, know when to shoot, defensive awareness, etc), a better understanding of the rulebook (icing, interference, etc), stop rewarding bad, selfish play (cherry pickers score, teams with 10:00 ToA and 40 shots do not)

I like the suggestions of goalie fights, KHL teams, Winter Classic, etc. but those are superficial things. For that matter, I'd like a better replay system, a la Madden, allowing us to save any play from the game...or at least any play that was in an end of period highlight.

Well, thankfully, not EVERYONE is an idiot. Here's some good suggestions I've seen:

Chris Tennant ‎1) Stamina during fights so people can't press ^^^^^^ 2) Better AI players in eashl especially goalies. 3) "no human goalie" option for drop in games. 4) First person goalie view similar to "mirrors edge" where you can see your limbs.
Brandon Daley The only change I feel necessary is the CPU AI needs improved tired of losing games in the eashl do to the CPU turning the puck over ....also I would like to be able to switch to goalie mid game if someone is using a glitch to score goals.... the CPU never adjust to stop that same shot also change the fighting its very boring and sometimes u can't punch
Eric Dufresne Make the goalie a lil transparent so that u can see where the puck is when its right in front of u as goalie locked. And ill be the only one who doesn't say put the winter classic in the game, because 2k has rights to it, and everyone here is a moron. But it shouldn't stop ea from making a outdoor area. Could easily take away the fans and have a hockey pond setting. I also want computer d to step up their game. There should be no reason why a lone forward can get around 2 d.
Dave Pryber How bout you give people an INCENTIVE to play defense. Everything is always tailored to the offense so people can score more goals. Enough. How bout a leaderboard for defensemen, right now it's only for goalies and forwards. How do you know... who the best D men are to recruit to your EASHL clubs? How bout an option to switch positions during OTP intermissions or if that's not do-able, then at least during EASHL Club games. If a guy drops because of his connection, it would be nice to re-balance the lines. How about making EASHL Clubs a tad more realistic, and by that I mean, once you sign on (join) a club, you're locked into playing for that club at least for the month until playoffs are over; then maybe to get around this you could give club GM's the ability to make trades. Would make the EASHL a heck of a lot more interesting now wouldn't it.
Dylan Ardis ‎1.) Goalie Fights or at least goalies can pust guys by the net. 2.) Glass breaking. 3.) Outdoor rinks. 4.) Old teams/jerseys like the mighty ducks or the fishermen islanders. 4.) More brutally in fighting and gameplay. 5.) Advanced fighting. 6.) 1st person be a player. 7.) Be a ref mode. 8.) Better computer players in EASHL. 9.) More game misconducts.
Rich Adrian Better CPU goaltending, banning online players for abusing glitches. No one is good enough at a fundamental hickey game that should have 2000 plus points in 300 games. I've seen it online. Goaltending should be number one priority for EA programmers to work on. If someone keeps doing the same lame deke time after time again the goaltender should adapt to that players style of play.

Thanks for the updates, Nut and Nate. By the way, I'm going to play tomorrow. Had a busy and hectic weekend along with the aforementioned Xbox issues.

wow, some of those suggestions are laughable, Faster gameplay and less tuner sets which "ruin the game"? give me a break.

Good suggestions. I like the first player view mode. I also think if you get a game misconduct you have to watch from the locker room on a monitor. I had some other suggestions but I totally forgot them. More gear and your option to change the colors any way you like.

I was actually surprised "Be a Ref" mode came up several times. Oh, crap! That reminds me of our "Be the Organ Player" mode with Rock Band keyboard support that we came up with. I have to go suggest that right now!

How hard is it to have actual team masks as choices in be a pro? Using a generic mask kills the mode for me...

I do like the goalie fight option and the ability to push people away from the net. And number one over everything else, fix the AI!

I can't see a first-person mode working too well. You'd have to have separate controls for head movement and body movement, which logically would be mapped to the two sticks, but what about aiming, checking, stick control, etc. that are currently mapped to the sticks?

I do wish they would make your avatar's perception make a difference though. For example, a player with his back to the puck, looking straight ahead, and skating full speed, should not be able to better receive a pass than the Defenseman back skating and looking at the puck.

Yeah, I wonder how many of those suggestions they're going to take seriously and really look at. My gut tells me that they'll definitely take the most common and easiest to implement (ie. goalie fights, glass breaking, Winter Classic) and we'll see those in NHL 12. But actually making the game play better is a more challenging task and will take a lot of effort on EA's part. I don't know if it's because we've learned how to handle all the bullshit, but I do think NHL 11 is better than NHL 09 or NHL 10 were though...or at least I'm enjoying it more anyway. I could easily see myself continuing to play this until the next game comes out.

I guess no one heard me, but Nate was saying to look at give/take for that game. That stat isn't in the postgame menu, so where can I see the team's give/take?

Tonight was not the greatest. We faced tough competition and had those blowouts, and then the last game ended badly. I felt like a dumbass for making the wrong move when I anticipated a deke or pass on that first goal. not much I could do as a defenseman on the other two. I was the only defenseman back when all 3 goals were scored.

Anyway, as of now I will be on Friday, but hopefully we can play before then.

couple rough games I played, most people were playing a different position though so it happens...

Is my mic picking up lots of sounds that are not just me? my wife is usually next to me when I play, but we definitely don't fight lol she found that funny, I told her after Gary asked that. I'll try to do a better job of not getting other stuff through.

This Friday I think I'll be out of town, but the Friday after I will be able to play from start till finish (or I get tired) hopefully I can also get some games in in between the time frames.
I guess no one heard me, but Nate was saying to look at give/take for that game. That stat isn't in the postgame menu, so where can I see the team's give/take?
I answered you, but I guess my mic was screwing up or something. It's in the Recent Games Details when you look at who the club has played and press A on a specific game (Club Info -> Recent Games). The reason I pointed it out was because it was way out of hand in that last game (and in a few other games). Gary had 8 giveaways/1 takeaway, you had 7 giveaways/1 takeaway, Sean had 5 giveaways/1 takeaway.

Not saying it to be an ass, but that's why we lose games. We have too many times where people just don't know what they're doing with the puck. We pass to nobody or backskate holding the puck out in front of us with the defense charging at us. There's no point blaming the goalie or bitching about EA when we play like shit ourselves. Yeah, we maybe played one or two good teams. But for the most part, people just sucked at the game. If at all possible, it would be great if we could try to suck less.
Is my mic picking up lots of sounds that are not just me? my wife is usually next to me when I play, but we definitely don't fight lol she found that funny, I told her after Gary asked that. I'll try to do a better job of not getting other stuff through.
Well, we hear her fairly often, but it's not like she's loud. I guess it's just because she's right there with you. If my wife watched me play, I'd probably only get to play 20 minutes before she got bored and wanted me to do something else, haha. That's why I make sure she has plenty of TV shows to catch up on or a book to read or something whenever we play hockey early.

You need to step your Defense game up also Nate.

Couple of other games I didn't bother to point out. But those were the most noteable.

0-3 Game we lost - 6/1
0-9 Game we lost - 11/2

sure my G/T might be bad, but normally we win 60% of the time. Chemistry is the Key to winning. No offense to Matt but I know where Alan is going to be 3/4th's of the time and no where to go. I also know where Rob and Brandon and Nate are going to be. If you don't have Chemistry in this game, It's hard to make it come together. Not saying it to be a douche but it's true. You play with people long enough and you know there style.

Your mic had been cutting out a lot, at least from what Sean and I could hear. I agree that most of us didn't play well. Give/take has always been bad for me, but it seems like I personally am good or bad the whole nigh. One night, I'll be great about taking the puck away and making good passes, and the next, I'll be turning it over and not getting any takeaways. Last night, though, probably half of the giveaways were when I was just trying to get the puck out of the zone on penalty kills or when I had 2 guys ready to slam into me (TWSS). I was probably worse than normal from not playing for a week. I don't mean that as an excuse, but it probably didn't help. That was mainly due to my Xbox malfunctioning rather than choice.

I figured that was your wife, Destro, but but I didn't know since Nate and Gary were in the party as well and I don't know what anyone's significant other sounds like. I could definitely hear her clearly on several occasions, but it wasn't like she was loud or annoying. It can be amusing sometimes.

EDIT: I agree on the chemistry between defensemen, Gary. I seem to know where Alan will be and where I should be in relation to receive or dish out a pass, but last night, I had no idea what you were doing or why. I understand that works both ways, though. The one thing that had little to do with chemistry was the fact that I was left facing odd man rushes because you didn't get back in time or kept taking penalties.

Maybe we should have a team meeting in a party chat before playing the next games. It would help to discuss this stuff, but at the same time, I don't want things to be misinterpreted by someone reading what someone else wrote and taking it the wrong way. I am guilty of coming across as a douche on the forums when I don't intend to, as well as thinking someone else is sounding like a dick when they're really not.

I do agree that everyone should be held to the same standards, but I will say that if Nate is anything like me, it can be really hard to adjust when you switch to a different position after being used to playing another position most of the time.

haha yeah I'm sure my wife being heard is good fodder for the conversations for later, but I don't want it to be a problem for anyone. Our main problem is, we only have the main TV in the living room, and a TV in the bedroom we basic cable, no DVR, and you have to just watch it sitting in bed. She usually plays games on her computer, next to me. In hindsight, I should have got her Plants VS Zombies for the PC because she'd always be on it, she plays more Xbox than me at this point right now.

When she goes back to work, which she has to basically within the next 5 weeks, I'll have more free time alone.

As for the game play, Gary is totally right, there is definitely a reason why the team got MUCH better with Gary, Alan, Nate, Darktower and Stat playing... when you play the same 5 people, you play like a total team and know the other players. I have found the team still wins, and I get good amount of points when I step in for stat at LW and the same other 4 guys are playing. That's because it's just one person stepping in for another and as long as I don't play horrible, just play fundamentally, you can keep some of the same stability.

But, when we jumble it up quite a bit, with me at RW (i have a real hard time adjusting, I just like the off hand cause I pass a lot when I'm about to get crushed) and someone like Nate or Dark on D when they are clearly our best scorers, it's just going to happen.

One thing I have to bash EA for is the fact they no longer let you run 2 teams at a time. We would be better served having a total second team with me, my brother when he can play, Sean, Matt and Shady all playing the same positions all the time. I know why they got rid of the feature, but it just doesn't make much sense.

At this point, they might as well have line changes. It wouldn't be too hard, just make it like be a pro. I know it's not the best scenario, but at least it gives everyone a chance instead of having to play practice mode or ranked private games.

So I basically agree with all points made. We have made huge strides just from the start of this game. Light years ahead of the last two seasons as well. A lot of that has to do with continuity and having a core group. Like Nate has always said, you get what you put in, and this year especially, if you know hockey fundamentals, and just follow that, you increase your chance at success in this game exponentially.
Ff you know hockey fundamentals, and just follow that, you increase your chance at success in this game exponentially.
If that were true, I'd be playing Right Wing alot more since I play RW in my Rec league. Instead I play D and my Real Life backwards skating is medicore at best.

I wasn't trying to be a douche either Nate. Was just trying to point out, we all will have bad games and great games. It's just a matter of "If your on your A game" really.

Wait, is that MY G/T? I know I had some games where I struggled, but I didn't think I put up any numbers like that. As for my defense, I can say without question that I feel I'm at my strongest at center and when I can trust our defensemen enough to get a solid forecheck going. Honestly, I thought we did the best last night when Sean was on wing, and he and I were able to work the forecheck.

It's not because "we're that good" at taking the puck away, but when we're able to hound the other team a bit, it forces them to rush passes, dump the puck, and generally make mistakes. In short, it takes pressure off our defensemen so you guys aren't having to do everything (this is basically how Brandon and Rob play as well...and we usually have a good mix of having two press and one drop back so we're not overcommitting). The games before that, we were letting them breeze down the ice into our zone and the difference in ToA illustrated that.
Give/take has always been bad for me, but it seems like I personally am good or bad the whole nigh. One night, I'll be great about taking the puck away and making good passes, and the next, I'll be turning it over and not getting any takeaways.
There's really no other way to describe that other than rust. The more you play, the sharper you'll stay. But we need to be self-aware as the night goes on. It's no fun having the same problems for 4 hours. Recognize what you're struggling with and try to adjust.
I do agree that everyone should be held to the same standards, but I will say that if Nate is anything like me, it can be really hard to adjust when you switch to a different position after being used to playing another position most of the time.
I wasn't even considering any of the games when people were playing different positions. Gary started the night mentioning that he wanted to play forward for a few games, and I was more than happy to jump back to defenseman to give him a chance to do that. I don't think he scored any goals while he was there, but I didn't think he did bad. My gripe is people playing positions they should be well used to by now and still making the same mistakes. At some point, you have to learn.

Chemistry is chemistry, but getting the puck taken from you, passing the puck at an opposing player, and not knowing what you should be doing on defense is basic stuff that has nothing to do with who your teammates are. I don't want to use you as an example, Matt, but you're a defenseman who doesn't hit and who is reluctant to flip the puck out of the zone because you have a hard time not getting Delay of Game penalties. That skill set kinda puts you at a disadvantage. I will say though that you're always in position and hardly ever get beaten down the ice. I just think learning to be a little more aggressive would make you a better player.
One thing I have to bash EA for is the fact they no longer let you run 2 teams at a time. I totally agree. It's just hard getting "the 2nd line" (and I hate calling you guys that because it sounds belittling as hell) together as often. I know we had a few times last week when most everyone was on, and we tried playing private games pitting the regular playoff line against the new playoff line, and it seemed like those games became more joking around than anything. I know that becomes easy when we get a 3 or 4 goal lead, but the point was to let you guys get some chemistry and face some tougher competition (which is what will happen in the playoffs).

Ultimately though, I think we just need to get everybody on the same page with HOW the team plays and the things that we've added to our game. If we can do that, swapping people in and out shouldn't be as big of a deal.

I actually scored one goal last night on wing! But I agree with everything you said Nate. Some times with me (no excuse really) I get off my game for some reason and I usually need that slap in the face (usually alan or some other teammate telling me I'm doing something wrong). Sure we bitch and stuff, but we are a well oiled team and all good friends. So I don't take anything to heart anymore since It's just friends trying to help me improve my game for this year and next year. But I just thought I'd point out the G/T's as well. Nobody is perfect we know that.

Well, the 9-0 game, I think I played defenseman, and we had a human goalie (and wasn't that the Elite banner team too?) If I'm remembering that right, that would definitely go along with defensemen having a tougher time with G/T. But I think that's where the forecheck will help out too. I know the games I did play D, I felt like I was needing to just flip the puck out constantly because they were always pressuring our zone. Forwards doing more to alleviate that is a definite need.

Also, I should point out, even after last night, our season record is 31-20-6 and we're still an Elite team. Destro was absolutely right talking about how far the team has come this year alone. It says a lot that we're playing to this level and still trying to improve. The stronger each individual player gets, the stronger the team gets. We've still got a banner to win.

I truly believe we can win a banner, with the way that we've played. Obviously I wasn't with you guys last year, but there's been a huge difference just in our play from September to January. It's amazing really.

Whoo, I get sick and I miss a boatload of stuff. I hope I didn't salmonella from getting raw chicken in my cut. You know who I'm going to blame for that. Anyways, I'll probably be out of commission tonight and tomorrow night. I'll try to make it Friday night but it depends how I am feeling.

I'm not sure what to do about the hitting and being more aggressive. When I try to be more aggressive and the guy gets around me, I can't turn around and catch up to him, and then I get criticized, so between that and the fact that I just bounce off guys when I try to hit them, there's never been much incentive to take those risks. I have gotten better about dumping the puck. The rust, like I said, was mostly due to my Xbox not working.

I know what you mean, Matt. At times, it probably feels like we're asking you for both sides of the coin. But in truth, playing it safe, not going for hits, etc. is kinda how we tell rookies to play. As you get better and gain better control over your skater, it gives you more opportunities to be aggressive. Most of us have been able to add some of those facets to our game but still keep that balance so we're not out of position all the time. As far as bouncing off of people, you probably won't have enough points for hitting unless you have your guy set up as a Defensive D-man. I thought we helped you with your stats though, so hopefully that's not the issue.

It's really about knowing WHEN to hit though...and as a defenseman, you guys do have to be really careful about it because you are the last barrier before an easy score. But if you've got the other d-man back AND the center back to help out, or if we've got both d-men back and they've only got the puck carrier charging down one side, there's no reason to not go for a hit (as long as both of you aren't going for it at the same time). The incentive to hit is probably just that it can be a lot more effective than poke checking depending on how close you are, how they're turned, etc.

I wouldn't want you to switch up your game entirely because going for hits all the time is probably worse. It was just something to think about adding to your repertoire. I know most of us have evolved a lot and added different things to our game just in this year alone (one timer, hitting, flip dump, dekes, outlet passes around/off boards, etc). Really, none of us play the game the same way we did as when it first came out.

I remember early on, our great plan for defense was to dive on the ice to block shots. We have made great strides since that time. I figured we would get better as we played but I never expected any shot at an elite banner.

As has been said here before the best way to improve is to play consistently and recognize what your strengths are and what you need to work on.
I remember early on, our great plan for defense was to dive on the ice to block shots. We have made great strides since that time.
Haha, really. Imagine if we had all just stood pat and didn't bother to learn any new techniques. Pack it in, guys!

Wow I've missed a lot over the last couple days. Time for a numbered list...

1. Tuesday was rough. We had a bad night and a lot of breaks that went the other team's way. I think a lot of it came from others playing out of position along with just running into really good competition.

2. I was the goalie in the 9-1 drubbing by the Elite Champion. I've never seen one-timers like that before and I had no shot. I think I'm going to take a break from goalie till March.

3. Nothing wrong with your wife Destro. Any fan of the CAG hockey team is ok in my book (even if she doesn't watch).

I know I can't really speak for the nhl 10 season, but I do remember the 09 season and how incredibly frustrating it was. All of the glitchers and primitive goalie AI was enough to drive you crazy. From Crotch Sharks to Sex Panthers we've greatly improved since our first game. It is great that we are having conversations about becoming better and talking about the playoffs, and not about trading the game in and looking forward to the next NHL game.

My strength and checking are higher and are at the same levels I set them at a couple weeks ago, but on Tuesday, I was bouncing off everyone, it seemed. I tried defensive D-man, and my player controlled like a tank. It was more expensive to boost the areas that needed to be boosted. The areas I need to improve in on re more costly with the defensive d-man setup as opposed to the 2-way defender style I have now.
What is your player's height and weight?
Come on, Rob. That info is in the OP now. Just check his hockey card, haha ;) He's 6'2" 187lbs, which to me seems a bit undersized for a defenseman. I don't know how much that really affects ability (as opposed to strength, balance, body checking), but it doesn't seem made for knocking people over.

I started to set my guy up as 2-way defender the other night, and thought it looked great in terms of distributing points. But then I got to the defensive category and saw how limited my body checking/d awareness/discipline/stick checking numbers were, so I switched back to defensive d-man. I don't really get the "controls like a tank" thing. I just boost the acceleration/agility/speed to around 80 and it's fine.

Haha, ooops. That does seem a bit light in comparison to both Alan and Gary, whose players are over 200 lbs. I think it has some impact, so Matt, you may want to try bumping your players weight up a bit.

What card do you have Matt? And what are your checking/strength/agressiveness rating?

Also, if checking isn't cutting it, use board play to tie up a guy instead to halt their progress and have a teammate help you dig the puck out.

I have whatever the last card is before legend. I will increase my player's weight. I'll have to get back to you on the stats, but my body checking and strength are in the 80's now and I have the setup that was "supervised" by Brandon and Nate for maximum gains. Stick checking has never been a problem for me. With a defensive d-man setup, acceleration/agility/speed cost much more.

With the last set of attributes (it's Off/Def/???, im talking about the ??? section...I think it's called Athletics maybe?), first beef up your strength to 99, and speed to 70. Throw the rest into agility. Don't even touch acceleration. Speed/acceleration don't make enough of a difference to invest too many points into. You won't get injured a lot, so durability is worthless. You generally don't need to use the hustle button a lot, so endurance is not that important unless you get beat a lot, which you don't. Balance again is worthless as a d-man.

In honor of the CAG hockey team, and my sore throat, here's some [poorly made] Crasin and rice pudding I cooked up earlier:

Yeah, those numbers should be good enough to knock a lot of people over (my body checking is 85 and strength is 82...as a 2-way forward). Maybe Rob is right and your guy isn't heavy enough. I mean, there will always be some players who you can't knock on their ass, but 80 checking/strength should definitely be good enough to make people lose the puck. Maybe the next time we have enough for a private game, I'll clear my attributes so you can try laying some hits on a weaker skater. Are you still using the ice or classic camera? Cause I know it's easier checking people with those too.

Get your rice out of my pudding! I do not enjoy white rice at all unless it's blended with meat, and the meat:rice ratio is at least 3:1. I think I'll go have a Snack Pack while watching this Kings game, though.

I'm still using the camera you guys suggested long ago. I think it's "classic".

I haven't seen crasins in years! I used to snack on those in my younger days. Guess they never caught on in western PA.

As for the rice pudding...no thanks. :)
