Well Nate, how was your skating session?
It was good. First thing I realized was how long it's been since I last skated (at least 4 years) and how much of a difference that makes when you're in your late 20's. It took me a good 10 minutes just to get my bearings and not feel like I was going to bust my ass. But by the end of the class, I was starting to put the pieces of my backskating together again (I was surprised the muscle memory was still there). I'm sure my technique was horrible, but for a first day back, what do you want? haha. Probably going to go again tomorrow since 8 free public skate sessions come with the class. We both had a good time though.

Oh, also, not sure if Ltor has checked in here since last night. But I took you off the team just as a joke, man. I mean, make no mistake about it, you absolutely suck at goalie and didn't even seem to care to try, but we're not COMPLETE douchebags. I will say though, while we have no problem with new people wanting to learn/try out goalie, we don't want the games to be a waste of time either. If we were boosting somebody to get their Legend card, yeah, sure, do whatever. But for regular private games we generally try to play well and keep each other sharp. Otherwise, what's the point of playing?

this is hilarious

Friday was fun, but I certainly am missing my high def TV. I'll be back to it Saturday night, though.

On a pudding-related note, this place here in Mississippi called Food Giant had Snack Packs on sale for a buck. They had 2 kinds I hadn't seen in California- blueberry muffin and lemon. I love lemon stuff, so I got that, and I wanted to see if blueberry muffin was as horrible as I've read in this thread. They also had cinnamon roll, which I've never had, but I can get that back at home.
Not a bad night at all. 3-1 for the night and a three game winning streak to end the night.
Nice job winning those games, guys. I played a little bit of Mafia 2, then started getting sleepy, so I just called it a night. I'll be on tonight though if anyone wants to play.

Look out, world! The CAG team is making a run again! I don't know what the hell is going on, but we seem to be back to our winning ways. I think it started Saturday night when we won our last 3 games. Then the group that played Sunday night went 3-1, winning their last 3 games. Then last night, we went 7-1, winning our first 3, taking a shitty loss (team scored 4 goals on their first 6 shots, so we quit), and then winning our last 4.

We did notice we were getting a lot of amateur/pro teams last night, but it's anybody's guess why that is. Was it because our record was that bad? (I think we were 1-11-2 at one point) Was it because it was a Monday night? Was it because for much of the night, we only had 3 people? Whatever the reason, it feels like some nights all we get is top 200 Elite teams, and then there are nights like last night when we actually get teams near our level. At least we're winning again though.

Sorry guys, my internet just up and died last night for about an hour. Lucky, I suppose, it came after I was done with work for the night.

It's cool. We crapped out in our last two games anyway. Got matched up with the 135th ranked Elite team, played them to a 2-2 tie into the 3rd period, then they just started glitching as hard as they could. Deking in the high slot, wristing the puck past the goalie short side...three times in a row. I sent them a message saying "nice job abusing shitty goalie programming" and got a "lol :)" response. After that, we got our asses kicked by a 5-4 Pro team and called it a night.

At least we caught up. You can tell when we get tired of playing. :p

Dear EA,

Can you please make my name not profane anymore? Oh and also, better collision detection because I poke check people a lot of the time to no avail even though my stick goes right through there stick or shins. Thanks

GARY RUSSELL

How? I know EA's filtering thing is strange, but I can't think of anything in your name that would be considered profane.

I tried to sign on last night, but while I could sign in to Live and peruse the dashboard, nothing else would work without disconnecting me from the internet. I'm guessing the storms might have had something to do with it, even though I wouldn't think that would cause problems on a cable connection.

Video games have role as teaching tool for kids

Not too long ago, the Kamloops Blazers of the Western Hockey League received a bit of attention for a post-game celebration that mimicked something from a 1994 hockey video game.

The stiff movements in that game from more than 15 years ago are laughable and kitschy today, especially when compared to today's video games, which look and play as real as the game on the ice.

So realistic, in fact, that some players and coaches have started using video games as teaching tools.

Younger players have gone from trying to imitate the moves they see Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin or Pavel Datsyuk make in highlight videos to trying to create them on games like NHL2K11.

"My son scored three goals this weekend with a move I've never seen him do," said Craig Wilson, a youth hockey coach in Maine who operates Maine Blizzard Hockey. "I asked, 'Where did you get the move?' He responded NHL11, when he practiced it on screen in the shootout."

The usefulness of video games as a true teaching tool is limited. It won't help a young player skate faster, pass better or shoot harder. However, vision, understanding of the game and creativity are among some of the things it absolutely can improve.

"My son scored three goals this weekend with a move I've never seen him do. I asked, 'Where did you get the move?' He responded NHL11, when he practiced it on screen in the shootout." -- Craig Wilson, youth hockey coach

"I don't think it's something (a video game) has anything to do with skills," Bob Nielsen, a long-time Philadelphia-area youth and high school hockey coach and operator of the coaching website IceHockeyDrills.info, told NHL.com. "If it has a benefit, it's maybe teaching systems and defensive-zone coverages, from looking at things from a higher perspective."

The default view for most video games is vertical, from a high perspective. It allows the player to see the entire width of the ice, as well as from above the blue line down to the end boards. Seeing more of the ice can allow a young player to see how action develops away from the puck-carrier.

"Maybe if they're running the power play on the game, you can see how the game goes for the four guys you're not controlling and see how the flow of some plays work," Nielsen said.

Nielsen also said the ages of the players changed what level of information they took from the games.

"The older players seemed to feel that they learned things about how the spacing on a power play works because they see the action from a high perspective," he said. "They had a better idea of the way a forecheck works and things of that nature.

"My surprise came with the younger players. A few of them told me that they learned moves from playing the video games. One player even discussed a specific move he makes often and said he picked it up playing one of the NHL2K-type of games. A few others said they have tried things on the ice in practice that they learned on a video game."

That level of creativity is one that should be cultivated, says Brian Yandle, a youth coach who operates Global Hockey in the Boston area. His brother, Keith Yandle, is an All-Star defenseman for the Phoenix Coyotes.

"I encourage it and tell them to be creative," Brian Yandle told NHL.com. "We'll be doing a shootout at the end of practice, and I'll say where'd you learn that, and they'll say I did with it a certain player in a shootout, picked it up on my stick or went between my legs."

It's all about finding another way to keep kids having fun and staying interested in the real game of hockey on the ice.

"Our players play against each other on NHL11 on PS3," Wilson said. "They play in between tournament games at the hotel. They play as a team and talk about the game as it's occurring on screen as if they were actually on the ice. The kids yell cycle, get on the post, behind the net, D-to-D pass and more."

"People once they play the game, watch the game of hockey, they gain respect for what these guys do," Yandle added. "I've heard from a lot of different kids, the one cool thing with the video games is they can go online and play against their friends. You might have somebody that's not that big as a player or somebody who plays it for fun and isn't that serious into it, but they're playing their buddies and finding competitiveness. They're gaining a knowledge of the game and it excites them a lot."

It's a shame that the youth of America is going to think that glitch goals are the way to score... :(

Hahaha, well that only works if the coaches also teach their goalies to fall on their ass at the first sign of trouble.

Or flop around like a dying fish.

jumped on to play last night but you guys were already running 6 and I didn't wanna mess up the club games.looked like you guys were still rolling.

Well, my MLB 2K11 order from Modell's got cancelled. So, I'm glad I decided to jump on NHL Slapshot when it popped up on Amazon Warehouse Deals yesterday. I've been wanting to try this game for awhile since I heard the mini-games are fun as hell and playing with the Pee Wees is awesome. After learning the controls (most of which are pretty intuitive based on NHL 11), I set up a quick Sabres vs Oilers game, and locked myself in as Derek Roy (wanted to make it Be-A-Pro-esque). And here's what I pulled off within the first couple minutes.

Look at that freaking AI winger crash the net! I didn't even have to tell him to shoot. It took him a second to break after I took out the puck carrier with that nasty hip check, but damn! That was the easiest single player cross crease I've ever had, haha. The defense was pretty awful getting back, but for little kids, that seemed about right. It's too bad the AI players in NHL 11 don't actually...ya know...try to score like that.

Thanks, Gary for those links. I don't know how the stiffness of the Bauers will suit me (long term though, it's probably the smarter move), but I do really like the Bauer line. If I got the Reeboks, I'd just be telling everybody to hold on so I could pump up every 5 minutes and that shit would get out of hand, lol.

Alan, that guy is amazing! "At the same time, that is when you pop the chain out of your shirt so it can flop when you run around the bases." So true. So true.

Well, not every five minutes. When I pumped up formy first game, I played 28 minutes of it (on and off shifts of course) and had to only pump up once when I was on the bench. It's a nice feautre but some woukd say it's stupid since you. Need your heel lose for the movement. The lace bite on the higher end models is much nicer as well. I just say, don't go cheap cause you'll just have to replace them in a year if yoou skate ay least twice a week. You can just take it as friendly advice, but it's worth it. But like we talked about, go to your LHS (local hockey shop people!) and try on different brands and stuff to get what you like. Once you find it, go up in performance and you'll be happy you did.

I'll be scarce this week (as I have been the past week) until next Tuesday when I take my licensing test. I'll probably be on more after I pass (hopefully lol).

I might be able to get on a little later. My Madden league game ran long, and I need to eat and do a couple other things.

Pretty sure I'm only 8 games or so away from 150. Just wanted to mention that since I could use some help from you guys to achieve the required grade to get my legend card once I hit 150 games played, if you're willing.

So, anybody able to play tonight? I could probably get on around 9 PM EDT if anyone's around. Otherwise, I'll probably just wait till 10. We made it back down to Pro last night! Let's shoot for Amateur! Yeah!!!

We're trying to get back to Amateur before the playoffs start. No one wants to play a douchebag, cherry picking, AI glitching, 50% shooting, lucky bounce, piece of shit, top 100 Elite team in the playoffs. There, I think that covers it, haha. :)

Oh, and Gary, I finally made my decision today. I ended up going with the Bauer Vapor X20's from www.icewarehouse.com. I appreciate you offering your coupon, but icewarehouse ended up being a little bit cheaper with their pricing + a 10% off coupon. Both websites seem to be great places to shop though. Even if they're a bit stiff, I just like the Vapor look better than the Reeboks, and hopefully it's something I"ll get used to the more I skate. Can't wait till they get here!

You could have just said Elite team and saved yourself 14 words.

Vapors are nice. If ya decide to do some pick up games and need a stick let me know. Not sure if your right or left. My brother sent me a couple Sherwood Carbon fiber right hnded sticks recently

I just got home, much later than I had hoped. Long day. I was really looking forward to playing tonight. I see you guys are still on and in a tie game... the comment about trying to get back to amateur wasn't serious, I take it.

EDIT: I messaged everyone who was online, waited a couple hours, but everyone signed off without responding. Just mentioning that for when somebody inevitably says "you haven't been playing".

That doesn't seem serious? As I told Sean last night, we're not TRYING to lose...because we don't want to take bad habits into the playoffs. But we're not avoiding top teams. We lost to the 90th overall team last night...and actually made the 400th overall team quit after we scored 2 quick goals in the 1st period thanks to their stupidity. Then we finished the night by beating another Elite team, so somehow we're back in Elite again. But the good games against Elite teams are rare, so trying to find 4 of them in the playoffs is just an exercise in futility.

Yeah, sorry. A spot didn't really open up. We only played one or two games after that and then most everybody was tired and decided to call it a night. I'll probably be on again tonight though.

That we did, that we did. I didn't talk much cause I was too busy getting yelled at by the wife for smacking the dog on the nose. Reason for me doing it? I tried to pet her and she fucking snapped at me for no reason. Go figure, the dog snaps and I get yelled at for it. I guess bitches stick together. Good for them, the couch is more comfortable anyways.

After looking at the team's record and division placement I figured you were just joking around, although I know none of us wants to play those types of teams in the playoffs. Also, thanks for not taking my comment the wrong way. Reading it now, I can see how it could come off as bitchy, but I really was only saying it in case the subject comes up later. I've just been wanting to play since I barely had any XBL time while in Mississippi over the past couple weeks. But then again, I wasn't able to make it home last night till 12:30 Eastern, so that didn't help things.

It's cool. I hear you. We've really been playing no less than 4 nights a week lately though. So, if you get on around 10 PM EDT or later, you'll most likely find some of us playing. Like I said, I'll be on tonight...probably playing MLB 2K11 unless people are on to play NHL.

Sounds good. I just messed around with the new Halo maps last night. I'll definitely be on later tonight playing something since my backlog is so damn huge now, but hopefully we'll have at least a couple more team members wanting to play.

Just wanted to comment on our games from last night. We got off to a rough start, but finally seemed to be putting it together toward the end. The last two games in particular I thought were pretty strong. The defense was really solid in that last game against the Elite team. I think we outshot them something like 26-12, and were really making them work to get into our zone. And even when they got past our forwards, Gary and Matt both seemed to be there for a big hit or pokecheck. I don't know if something clicked with you guys, but you seemed to be flowing really well together those last few games.

I'll be on tonight if anyone wants to play...probably around 10-10:30. I'm probably going to miss tomorrow night because the wife and I are gonna go by the ice rink and get our skates sharpened and test them out a bit. Can't wait to feel how much better they are than shitty rentals.
