Oklahoma

nah, that's the best I could get from the newspaper classified ad with regard to the location. no phone number, either.

I tried looking it up on my mapping program, but I don't even know if there is a 12th ave in Moore.... but I could see how someone from the area might want to call Sooner Rd. something like 12th if they used to live in Norman or if it is just north of norman... (12th in Norman becomes Sooner Rd. as you head toward Moore).

As I have said, I just saw this sale in a local classified ad newspaper that comes to my house every week. I wish I could give you more info... Personally I know I'd love to go on friday if I had a better sense of where it was... There were at least 2 games they listed that I'd be interested it... I'd still suggest bringing an extension cord, truck, etc.. no clue if these items will work, if they can be plugged in easily, and I'm sure you'll need to transport them out of there as soon as you buy them... might consider bringing a strong friend too.. as noted in another post of mine, these things weigh a lot... picking up a dolly from Lowes for $19 isn't such a bad idea either...

I know someone who lives in that general 12th/Sooner area, I might be able to ask them what that storage place on 12th/sooner is called... my guess is that someone just has a ton of stuff in a storage container/garage location and wants to dump it all... as such, I'm expecting credit cards are out, and I'd probably rather pay with cash than a check (not to mention, they might want the cash for as-is games as well).

Oklahoma legislature passes games bill

Measure that would classify violent games with pornography passes the House without a single opposing vote.

While a piece of Utah legislation seeking to have video games with "inappropriate violence" classified under the same statute that applies to pornography fell into legislative limbo earlier this month, a similar Oklahoma bill has gathered a full head of steam.
Last week, the Oklahoma House of Representatives approved HB3004 unanimously, with 97 Representatives voting for it, none against it, and four excused from the voting. Utah's bill faced slightly tougher opposition in its House of Representatives, passing by a vote of 56-8, with 11 legislators absent or not voting.
The Oklahoma bill makes it illegal for stores to sell or allow minors to view any game with inappropriate violence to minors. If passed, retailers would not even be able to display the games for sale unless the bottom two-thirds of their covers were obscured by "blinder racks" in the same way that adult magazines are.
While the bill's formatting on the matter is a little different, the text bears a striking resemblance to that of Utah's piece of legislation when it comes to defining inappropriate violence. According to the law, that term would be defined as any depiction in a game that, when taken as a whole, has the following characteristics:
"a. the average person eighteen (18) years of age or older applying contemporary community standards would find that the interactive video game or computer software is patently offensive to prevailing standards in the adult community with respect to what is suitable for minors, and
b. the interactive video game or computer software lacks serious literary, scientific, medical, artistic, or political value for minors based on, but not limited to, the following criteria:
(1) is glamorized or gratuitous,
(2) is graphic violence used to shock or stimulate,
(3) is graphic violence that is not contextually relevant to the material,
(4) is so pervasive that it serves as the thread holding the plot of the material together,
(5) trivializes the serious nature of realistic violence,
(6) does not demonstrate the consequences or effects of realistic violence,
(7) uses brutal weapons designed to inflict the maximum amount of pain and damage,
(8) endorses or glorifies torture or excessive weaponry, or
(9) depicts lead characters who resort to violence freely"
The bill's definition of inappropriate violence specifically mentions games, so similar depictions in books, movies, or music would not be covered. If passed, store owners caught selling such games to minors would be charged with a misdemeanor and fined $500 on a first or second offense, and $1,000 on future offenses.
Having passed the House, the bill has now moved to the Oklahoma Senate.

It really doesn't shock me too much, but like most Oklahoma bills presented under the guise to try and 'protect minors', I'm sure it is faulty. Lawmakers in this state have often thrown out bills to curb underage drinking, etc., without any real thought as to the flaws of said bills and whether the bill actually is doing what they 'think' it is doing... Certainly, no lawmaker in this state wants to walk back to their voters and have someone claim 'hey, these guys are pro- violent games', which you know is what would happen in a bible belt state. Rather, I'm sure those who are against the bill are just passing it hoping that someone will challenge it later.

For these bills, the key issue in my mind that really will come into play is in the 'artistic' merit of games... clearly, lawmakers are too afriad to attack violent mainstream movies (i.e., the Sin City sort) or music (heck, most of it) because they know they can't avoid the nightmare that is that these media are viewed as 'artistic'... To me, there is nothing additionally 'artistic' about most graphic movies and the better-made graphic epic games like God of War. Both cost millions. Both feature just about everything on those above lists... but since one is a game (which is rooted in historical figures, and prominantly features the violence and sex that mythology has often been associated with), it gets treated like porn, while the other is considered 'art' despite being 100% fictional. Sorry, I don't buy it.

In my mind, the real issue is and always has been the rating of games versus the rating of movies. Parents understand the Movie rating system... To me, instead of covering up violent games, why not change the ratings to those comparable to movies... We've tried the whole 'MA' thing... it doesn't register. If a game like God of War was an R-rated game (which I believe it is), there shouldn't be any confusion... To me, I've only known of 2-3 games that really ever pushed the R-rating limit in my mind, and one of them, Grand Theft Auto: SA, was still only pushing it because of the 'Hot Chocolate' game that 99% of all owners would have never even been able to access anyway... and even among those who did, they were SUPPOSED to be MA game players anyway!! So a whole bunch of lawmakers got upset about a group of 17+ year olds playing a hidden mini-game that they really never even played anyway because they couldn't readily access it! No kids should have been playing this game in the first place...

More to the point, the issue shouldn't be coving games up and going after any game with a drop of blood, it should be enforcing that MA games should not be sold to minors. That's it! And if that means calling MA games R-rated games just to make sure parents understand, fine... What bothers me is that plenty of games fall under these 'guidelines' and are clearly not 'bad games'. Does anyone honestly believe a game like Diablo on PC is similar to porn? Probably not, and if Diablo were a movie, it'd probably be an R-rated movie (no swearing, and just killing arbitrary monsters, say as in Army of Darkness)... and as a game, it was MA... but does this game really need to be covered up where as any kid in the world can look at any R-rated movie?

And hey, the other thing to keep in mind is that I wonder what this means for something like Ebay, e.g., what is stopping kids from buying violent games from the internet? And what about those who sell violent games over the web to minors... how exactly can a store verify age of a child other than to ask they confirm? Kids are smart. They'll figure out ways around this if they really want to buy these games...

Some decent games for $4.99 at Best Buy in Norman, especially for XBox owners. NFS Underground, Medal of Honor Rising Sun, a decent number of other EA games... Seemed to be plenty of the two I mentioned, so no real need to panic. I think they will honor that price for the PS2 versions as well.

Had my GF run up to BB on May with a list since my car was broke and I was stuck at work. Was unable to find anything except Max Payne for $2 and they kept trying to act like it should be $19.99 instead of $1.99. Even the manager was no help on helping her find others so there may or may not be any. I know there aren't any Radiata Stories though :( Has anybody seen an extra somewhere I could snag?

I'm not sure Radiata Stories is even worth playing for that price.

It's not that the game is not worth the price, but your time is better spent playing something else.

well, I usually buy anything that is cheaper than its IGN online review score if it is a genre that really interest me...

I am enjoying Medal of Honor: RS. I don't know if I would have wanted to spend full price on it (graphically, after playing Call of Duty 2 for example, it just seems limited and flat, but hey, that's what you get with a 3 year old war game.. I'm sure if I hadn't played some of the newer stuff, this would be great in its own way), but for $5 it wasn't bad. But I would agree that even at $5, sometimes these games are just best to pick up and use as trade items...

With Radiata, almost any RPG IMOP is usually worth a pickup if on the cheap from my experience with game trading... someone almost always wants RPGs, especially an unopened or excellent condition (i.e., once or twice played) RPG, even if the score is modest... I know on gametz I could easily turn around and sell the game for shipped without even thinking. Smallish profit, to be sure if I wanted to turn around quickly, but say $5 net or so per every game... usually I'll use the profit to justify the puchases of my own copies of the cheap games that I'll keep.

I hit the Norman BB this morning and only found Medal of Honor:RS for ticketed for $1.99. However, there were many signs for it and NFSUnderground for $4.99. They had tons of each.

I'll have to check the Crossroads location tomorrow when I pick up KH2.

yeah, I was thinking about buying KHII. Reviews have been pretty shaky on the difficulty side, e.g., far too easy... the Tron, Steamboat Willie, and Pirates OTC levels sound great, though...

OTOH, something tells me this will be GH eventually because I have no doubt it will sell regardless of the reviews (anything square, as well as most things disney), and I would probably be best suited holding onto my money for now, buying SOTC when it goes GH, and then buying KHII a year or two from now when it is GH... I'm also interested in buying a DS anyway, and I'm guessing I may want to trade for/buy a copy of Kingdom Hearts on GBA first before I play KHII since the stories are all linked...

oh well, $1.99 for Medal of Honor:RS isn't too shabby. I guess I'm upset I overpaid for it a few dollars.. heh. Though you are right about gas money nowadays... going from OKC to Norman would probably be about 40 miles round trip which for most cars can be almost 2 gallons...e.g., at current OK gas prices, you are looking at $4-5... that doesn't even count the effort on your part... It really does hardly seem worth most trips unless you were planning on buying several games or knew it was a crazy deal that was going to save you upwards of $15 on something you wanted...

Quail Springs Best Buy:

NDS
Sprung $1.99 (3 copies)
Ping Pals $1.99 (3 copies)
Madden (didn't catch the price)(5 copies)

NGC
Geist $5 (3 copies)

XBox
Matrix: Path of Neo $24.99 (many copies)

PS2
Enthusia Racing $1.99 (2 copies)
NBA Street Vol 2 $19.99 (several copies)

Several PSP games but I don't have one so I didn't notice any prices.

ugh! I was just at Gamestop on Memorial. Decided not to go to Best Buy.

Luckily, the only game I want or have any interest in is Super Mario Strikers. I have gotten all the games I have any interest in.

I have not played it, but I've heard nothing but good things about it.

I jumped on the FSW 10 hammers deal at GS/EB. The manager at the store call all the other GS/EB's and told them to put up signs saying not to accept them sorry FSW fans. (non existent?)

for those that don't know, the quail sam goody store is closing. wasn't listed on the original closing list from a couple of months ago. games and dvds were only 25% off today which with their prices aren't that great, but they had some hardware 25% off also. saw a gba sp for 59.99, nintendo ds for 97.50 and a ps2 for 112.50

I went by there last weekend, they still had GBA SP, DS, and PS2.

The games selection was weak (as usual), and over priced.

As the end draws near, I'm sure the prices will get better.

I wouldn't mind getting a cheap ps2 slim or a cheap gba sp... though I'm thinking for either they'll have to drop below $50.

Thanks for the Sam Goody Intel. I've waiting about 2 months for my DS Lite to get here and if the DS's get low enough, I just might pull the trigger.

The Target on NW Expressway has one more Trace Memory for $7.48. While it's in the main case marked at 30, it'll ring up for 7 @ the register.

Oh, and I tried to scan it on the customer scanner and they have it cleared out of their system.

I hit that store this afternoon and was unable to find the Trace Memory at all. I did however pick up the last Meteos for the same price. Thanks for the heads up!

I'll have to try another Target for the Trace Memory.

Alright, which one of you city dwellers want to pick up Meteos and/or Trace Memory at those prices for me? Gas is rediculous! $2.58 per gallon! In return, if Hastings ever has a deal here I'll do the same. I'll pay shipping of course + total cost and maybe something extra assuming we're still talking a good deal for me.

BTW, I got a job, doing software development, in Stillwater, and graduate in May. Yippee!

I had/have another option in Dallas still which I can still persue, but I like it here. Travel is easy, the city is, well, small relative to "Big Cities" and I know quite a few people and feel comfortable here.

At least we get a new Super Duper Jumbo Size Wal-Mart in a year or so. Woohoo! (um, that's sarcasm)

well, cagcast was reporting ds lite in may (though delay is possible).. I really won't worry about such deals until then, but from everything I hear, I might just want to pick up meteos anyway if I know I'm going to get a ds eventually.

So that Target had Meteos? Wow, I didn't even see it there, it must of been right under my nose. You're talking about the newest Target on expressway, no the one on May where they remodeled right?

Brings my DS game count up to 5. Man this is fursterating.

Oh, and congrats on the software job! Sounds like you're set.

Say, you ever listen to a Minnesota Public Radio station called 89.3 the current? That station plays some awesome tunes and they'll occasionally have some great in stuidio appearances.

Doh! I went to 50th and May. They built that Rockwell and Expressway store right after I quit working for them and I always forget it's there. I'll have to check it out.

Thanks for the info, again.

someone on another site was posting that hastings had a used game promo going (I think perhaps a B2G1)... don't know how worth it this will be locally... did notice the last time I was there that they had restructed a bit and also had a few other cheap games...

Does that mean you're going to have to sign a Bush loyalty agreement to attend graduation?

When Bush was having his "town meetings" everyone who wanted to attend had to sign a loyalty agreement to get in. This is why most every question was, "I just want to tell you how great a job you're doing."

I don't know who is talking at OU this year, though if they have to compete with Bush, it'll obviously be someone better... heh.
