Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Disclaimer: This list is intended to help all guide hunters. Please feel free to print yourself a copy and get what you can find. Thank you

Master list in post 2

We had a 'R Zone meeting yesterday. Selling penny items will get you written up and fired on teh second offense.

So don't bother trying the Whitehall/Egypt, PA TRU anymore. Even in the off chance you find something you're not leaving the store with it.
Yikes. Fun while it lasted I guess.

Is that corporate-wide?
Looks like we can all kiss getting guides like Conker, GT 4, and God of War goodbye.

Friedle did say it was an "R-zone" meeting. There's still the chance of finding a guide and taking to a cashier at one of the main registers. They may not care (or know)...

It was an R-Zone meeting. But the front-end staff (aka the cashiers) had thier own meeting where they got the same warning.

I don't know if this is corporate, region, or district-wide, or if it's something my store director is doing. As I said before, she's been pissed at us in the past for selling penny stuff.

Looks like I might've scored the last penny guides in the St. Louis area last night at TRU, if it seems like a company-wide thing.

i would sell them for 2 pennies then go Cant fire me . I sold them at 2 cents you said i couldnt sell them for a penny didnt say anything about dont sell at 2 cents

Maybe you'll get fired twice for trying to be a smart-ass! :D

There's no manual price override -- it requires the key of a supervisor aka the s-key.
There's no manual price override -- it requires the key of a supervisor aka the s-key.
Best Buy does it this way for any price adjustment, CC does it for any price adjustment that's not a PM, Walmart does it this way for any price adjustment, and so on.

It's either sold at full price or not at all ($0.01 -> trashcan), under the current system. Something in-between the two extremes would be a nice thing.

They didn't say anything about selling xbox's for 50 bucks either, but I think that would get you fired.
Looks like we can all kiss getting guides like Conker, GT 4, and God of War goodbye.
There's always Best Buy. They have the guides laying out and priced at 1 cent in Louisville and Elizabethtown.

If the stores are going to start a penny guide/merchandise policy they should have it in large print on the store doors or at the register that all items that ring up at the register for .01 are not allowed to be sold under any circumstance.

Either that or they need to get on top of pulling the penny guides and not be lazy about it, if they got a list of guides a few days ahed before they were pennied then they would have time to pull them by the time the penny date was reached.

The average customer is not informed about the policy of penny guides or items, and if an item is brought to the register then it is to be sold since all merchandise on the floor of a store is fair game to be sold. If a store wants to operate this way then they need to put the policy in public for all customers to view. If they do not do that then i consider every item priced at a penny fair game to be bought legally. There should be no dispute at all, if it rings up in a register as a penny and its on the store floor then it should be able to be purchased.

If there are problems i would talk to the BBB or some other organization or call a local "action" news station and explain the problem, i think this is something that needs to be resolved and if someone doesnt get on the retailer's case about it then it will never be resolved. It is definitly an unfair business practice in my opinion if they do not sell you the penny merchandise, when it is sold legally to a customer from the store floor.

No, it's not fair game.

See, every store has the right to refuse any sale for any reason.
No, it's not fair game.

I thought there was laws against that kinda thing?
I mean aint that like bait and switch or maybe it's some other term?

If you bring a guide up to a register, it scans for a penny, don't they have to sell it for a penny?? I mean you cannot just change the prices on the fly like that.

You could apply this to anything. Why not start telling customers who go to ring out that new $3000 hdtv that it's $5000 instead even though the computer says $3000.

That DVD you got. Computer says $14.99, but I think i'm gonna tell ya it's a computer mistake and if you really want it, it's $24.99.

Even if there are not laws against this kinda thing I think everyone would agree it should not be done if you have any sense at all. I mean no faster way to loose customers. Escpecially with so much competition. That same hdtv can always be bought from CC, wal mart, etc.

That would be false advertising, and they are not advertising the guides for a penny. I've been denied before, but I didn't call shenanigans, I just try later when someone else was working or a different store if it's one I really want.

And Freidle is right, every store has the right to refuse any sale for any reason.

I myself will miss getting guides from TRU, since it's the only place I've had success aside from 1 time at circuit city.

Unless it's marked on the shelf/guide as a penny, or advertised as a penny, then no, it's not bait and switch. Same goes for other merchandise.
well, if we know it will be pennied, can we still buy them ahead of time (like a week) and price adjust them?
Again I think yes, they have that price match policy.

But realistically you'll just get some jerk manager who will turn you down.
I would not try it cause then you are gonna be stuck with a bunch of guides you paid $16.99 for.

As far as the guides not being "advertised" for a penny while they might not be in the weekly ad, many are often on the website and as far as I am concerned when I see it pop up on screen for $.01 looks like the computer advertising it to me for a .01

Again these companies fail to fess up to their mistakes.

My whole point was, and you would have to go back to the post I made on the last page, was if you fucked up live up to it and learn from your mistakes.

I did essentially the SAME THING as I explained.

Double sold a game but basically forgetting to pull it (i.e. pulling penny guides to be trashed) from half.com

Instead of making up lies, and i'm sure I could have came up with some good ones, I went out and bought another copy of the game NEW and made good on the sale. Did I take a loss? Hell yeah. But I won't likly make the same mistake again.

I don't care what they technically can do, there is a basic right and wrong here.
Dont make some customer waste their time and gas coming to the store then because you were lazy and forgot to pull the guides you have to make up lies or refuse to sell at the register.

Learn to be a gracious looser. The customer beat you fair and square.
They did their research (the internet[here]) and beat you at your own game.

Live up to that instead of trying to get out of it. BB managers or TRU, whoever are like the people that log off of xbox lives games to avoid a loss. They sore loosers plain and simple. All i'm trying to say is man up and do the right thing.

I mean again if they wanna pull them, pull them. I can live with that. I'm fine with that. But if you screw up and forget to then live with the mistake. I'm not complaining at all about not getting to get some guides. If I do great, if not nothing to me. I'm advocating the fact I hate how companies try to lie to customers and weasle out of their mistakes. That I don't approve of and I don't understand why some people here seem to. This fact should not be okay with you as a consumer. Again where does it end???

You get some manager who does not agree with [insert any item here] selling below cost or something and just decides "we aint gonna sell that" or claim computer error, or claim we can't sell it to you at $14.99, it's going to be $24.99, etc. You can't just make stuff up like that. Why do people seem to think this is okay? Unless you guys are BB/TRU corporate people ???
well, if we know it will be pennied, can we still buy them ahead of time (like a week) and price adjust them?
Tried that a couple weeks back for the Aug 4th TRU penny guide drops and was flatly denied on the PM's. Since they went to $0.01, they couldn't be PM'd down to that price and I either had the option of returning them or keeping them at full price.

Apparently, at least with my TRU's, that doesn't apply for penny items.

No TRU is going to do that. In fact, I'm sure no company would. Why would they take a hit like that on something they're suppose to destroy anyway?

I don't work at the service desk, but I'm pretty sure a pirce match is done by returning and re-ringing the item. (Not just refudning you the difference.) And since it has to be re-rung at a penny you're not gonna get it.

That's exactly why it didn't work, a TRU PM is a return and re-ring, while CC and BB do it as a similar process, though it ends up being a re-ring. Since it was a return and re-sell, it didn't work. Well, the store manager said it wouldn't work for the same reason.

A few times, back in the days when TRU did PM's to other stores, they sometimes would do it as a price adjustment, though now, with the 14 days on their own pricings only adjustments, it's a return and re-ring.

A fact with the penny guide showing a price in the system rather than something like NA, some huge price, like 99,999.99, or something other than 0.01, would make this whole process easier for them, rather than just blindly looking over the price of the guide and then finishing the sale.

I went to my TRU and talked to one guy I've gotten to know in the R-Zone (such a stupid name) who always lets me know when there is going to be a sale or clearance. He did confirm that TRU is cracking down on selling guides for .01. I found 1 copy of The Incredibles that they missed but who couldn't sell it to me. I also checked a second location and there wasn't anything there either. I'm surprised it took this long. Give it 3-6 months and they'll probably get lax about it again. It just sucks that they're cracking down at about the same time BB is as well. I did go to a BB today and they didn't have any guides from the most recent .01 list but they did have .01 price tags on display for Brothers in Arms, Doom 3 and Forza. I "liberated" the tags for future reference. I found TONS of guides while I was on vacation and I'll post my bragging list later.:D
Again I think yes, they have that price match policy.

As far as the guides not being "advertised" for a penny while they might not be in the weekly ad, many are often on the website and as far as I am concerned when I see it pop up on screen for $.01 looks like the computer advertising it to me for a .01
It's not unusual for a store to refuse to pricematch their own website. I've heard it from people on this site many times.
even the great walmart refuses to pricematch their website
This and the few other comments people made just fuels my point of why do stores have to lie ???

If you have a price match policy then to me, you have to price match.
If you don't want to price match then don't have that policy.

Or atleast change the wording to something like "we will sometimes match prices within 30 days" etc etc.

I'm not real familiar with TRU and wal mart but again BB does have a price match policy and they should honor it even though they often do not.

I believe BB's policy is something like if within 30 days you find a lower price they will match it and refund 10% of the difference.

So in all honestly that should make the penny guides free and you should get a full $16.99 refund. Hell depending on the exact wordage, which I don't have handy, you should get a profit after the whole 10% of difference thing. Again I think anyone has little chance of getting this to happen, I have never tried it, but to me you SHOULD be able to. It's a scam, cheat and lie that you can't.
Actually TRU doesnt allow you to return guides, so it doesnt matter
That's funny, they certainly let me do it when they wouldn't price adjust them.

My TRU takes back guides and magazines. As long as thye don't look read and are resellable. And we won't take back one that's shipped shrink wrapped and not returned that way.

You've gotta read the fine print of the price matching rules. Generally price matches will not be granted for online purchases, mail in rebates, and clearance items. Penny guides would fall under clearance.

Mine were in the bags I bought 'em in and weren't read. Any one that were sealed were still sealed.

Guess that's why they took them back, they were in the same condition that I bought them.

Trying to justify to me that a TRU should price match an item that should be destroyed and (partially) sent back to the publisher for credit seems insane.

Trying to actually do it is fine with me though :)

went to an EBGames yesterday, and suprisingly, there were a lot left, including nba2k5, leisure suit larry, DOA Ultimate (with no cds though), and some others. They were marked as 14.99, and when the guy rang them up, they showed up at 0.01. He told me that he wasnt supposed to sell them to me, but he did anyways. Overall pleasant experience. Scored 9 ! Thanks OP!

Also, I would like to contribute on finding new 0.01 cents guides in BB and EB as well. Any other way to find them except for looking at the tag at BB ( some of them are marked 0.01) or taking every single one of them to the register?(seems like my BB doesnt have a self-scan machine) And any info on which day of the month a price drop would occur? Thanks again!

EB is now my favorite place to score penny guides. Their selection is usually pretty good since they pretty much just keep them on some shelf and rarely (if at all) go through them to clear them out. Unlike Best Buy or TRU, I've also never been turned down.

I went to Best Buy and found four of them! But....the salesperson told me that they were only a penny if I bought the respective game.
...
I hate it when they make up stuff like that.
EB is the best place to find penny guides though ^_^ - I got about 20 different ones and instead of ringing them up they simply put them and a few more in a bag and gave them to me ' '

Two ways to approach that:

1) Ask them to prove where that's the case. The item description should show something like that. Otherwise they're making it up.
2) Buy game + guide, return game.

ah well, twas worth a shot. My BB doesn't even have guides anymore (other than for a few select games, and only in small supply then), my EB is really good about getting rid of theirs, and now TRU is crackin down. Oh well, there's always my good friend gamestop, who is not only lazy as hell when it comes to getting rid of them, and the employees sometimes actually help me look for them. I will miss TRU though, especially with the inevitable loss of the DMC3 and God of War guides.

This is still largely YMMV depending on location... talked to some people at the local TRU, and they said nothing like this was ever mentioned.

This may only be some TRU's where it's a huge problem. Since I'm generally the only one at TRU who gets these guides (I go right when they open, grab what I want, the rest get destroyed after I leave) it may not be as big a problem here.

And yes, let them change it nationally AFTER God of War, Forza, GT 4, and Conker get pennied out :D

i was doing my usual 0.01 game guides hunting at my local BB and found another splinter cel:chaos theory guide (0.01, which i already have 2, but one of them is kind of messed up and the other one i decide to give to my friend) and a ninja gaiden guide (which i didnt know the price), along with some other 0.01 guides and brought them to the cashier. he scanned them and found out all of them were 0.01 except for the ninja gaiden one(14.99)told him that i would take the others. I dont know what he was thinking (maybe it was cuz the Splinter Cell one was wrapped), but he accidentally sold me the Ninja Gaiden guide for 14.99! Although i didnt get the Splinter cell guide, it was still pretty good. And the guy also asked me "Are these supposed to be 0.01?" he sounded like he was gonna buy the rest! By the way, the store had like 15 Call of Duty guides and 5 Brothers in arms guide left, so if anyone is in Socal, you can try your luck there.

Again, the average consumer does not know about the policy of any store can refuse any sale for any reason, this needs to be posted in ads or somewhere in the store, if it is that store's policy. Even if its in fine print, if i am going to challenge it i want to see it posted somewhere, if it is printed somewhere and they show it to me then its all good and i will not contest it. Fine print does count, if you dont read the fine print, you are stupid.

Most stores have price matching policies properly outlined and printed, and most stores will not match website prices unless they specifically say they will match website prices, also they have disclaimers that say the price matching policy and return policy can change at any time.

I have never seen a policy saying that a store can refuse any sale at any time for any reason, so my thoughts on this if your gonna have a policy of any kind, it needs to be printed somewhere, and if someone contests it, some sort of documentation can be used to prove that is really is the store's policy. If there is no printed policy then i assume its the cashier making something up, such as some of the examples mentioned: aka you bring up item x and it rings up for 9.99 but the cashier suddenly states that oh thats a mistake in the computer, item x is really supposed to be 39.99, and proceeds to override the price for 39.99, yet there is no documentation about that in the store anywhere as a misprint. Usually if there is a misprint it is documented clearly on the store doors or the front of a store. Thats the same thing they are doing with penny guides essentially. When you try to contest the price the manager and just about everyone in the store tells you the same thing, there is a mistake in the computer and the price is supposed to be 39.99 instead of the 9.99 that the item rang up. So you leave the store disgruntled.

Rather then blaming something on a computer error, a glitch in the system, etc they NEED to have proof of policy x, whatever that may be, instead of admitting they have a problem with pulling penny guides before they are marked down they tend to make up a lame excuse as to why an item is priced a penny, and if there is no printed policy the item is to be assumed as actually costing a penny. If a guide is not pulled and it rings up a penny then as other people have said, they need to man up to it and just sell the items as a penny.

This whole activity sounds very illegal, and i am sure TRU or best buy could get in trouble for not selling the penny guides as they are supposed to, provided the policy is not in writing in view of the customers. Especially best buy who puts the 0.01 cent stickers right on the guides!!!

Honestly, I think anyone who makes a big stink about penny guides is just being an asshole.

If you missed one that you wanted, just do a trade . . . it has always worked for me.

Demanding that a store sell you (or pricematch?!) merchandise that we know they aren't supposed to sell in the first place makes no sense. Don't buy them in advance of a drop and think they should refund all but the penny.

Making a big deal about it and complaining to higher ups will only lead them to finding better ways to handle this "problem." Maybe they could switch the price to $100.00 to signal their removal? Then if a customer complained, they could do them the favor of lowering the price to $14.99 because the guide has yet to be removed from the shelf.

Please, no one make a stink about this . . . we have been lucky to get as many penny guides as we have. The stores seem to run hot and cold on enforcement and if your store sucks right now, maybe on the next drop you will score . . .

In the meantime, CML for trades if you missed something . . . :)

I agree. Getting penny guides is a blast. For me it's like crack. I'm hopelessly addicted. But, if I miss one, I just try again at another store. Since starting my penny guide hunts, I've found over $1200 worth of guides for less than $20 (including a few I've paid $1 each). I might never play some of the games, but I've got guides for games I own, I want to own and a few that made me seek out the game.

We have a great thing going and I hope it just keeps going. It's too much fun.

Reserving the right to refuse a sale to anyone is simply a legal right, it's not something they have to state in store policy.

At one Best Buy I went to, the girl rang up the guide as a penny. I handed her a penny and the receipt printed out. She was just about to tear it off and give it to me when some guy noticed it and practically came running over and said that was a mistake. Now, at this time, we had already made a legally binding transaction (They gave me the product, I gave them the money, deal is done). I could have made a big stink over it, but chose not to. I ended up getting the guide anyway.

These guides are supposed to be pulled from the shelves. We know this. And they seem to know it, at least at higher levels. Making a stink about it will only end the penny guides for everyone, so shut up. :)

Well said. Honestly, making a big deal out of it will just make store, district and regional managers get more on the ball in regards to removing them promptly and not making this problem for themselves in the future. Be nice and move on to the next store. Come back in a few months when new employees are around. Although it may not be 100% consistent, realize we've got a good thing going here and it's just not worth it to ruin it over a handful of guides.

I agree with everyone who says it's stupid to make a big stink about being denied penny guides. We're not entitled to them, we're just getting lucky and benefitting from store employees being lax/lazy/ignorant/apathetic/kind/etc. Be happy with what you get.

Except when nobody wants to trade / sell an extra for a CAG... hell, I even offered people 5 dollars for a Forza guide, and I still got no replies.

It worked for me the last two drops, doing trades, and Shrike is awesome enough to get tons of extras... but it seems so many people are scared of being called a hoarder, they just grab one copy for themselves and that's it.

Please, grab as many as you can when they drop to help out the less fortunate =/
