Any time someone starts talking about how the transformers movies are dumb, that they objectify women, that they're racist, etc., it's pretty clear that person is a fucking retard and doesn't understand that transformers movies are made primarily for an audience of teenage boys. Not every movie has to be some Oscar winner that's trying to send a fucking message. Sometimes I just want to see robots smashing each other and hot chicks running around a war zone with hardly any clothing on.
It would be a wrong assumption to say that I want a lesson in movies. Oh how I hated that in TV sitcoms. ASS-U-ME.

true christmas story: as a kid my parents had gotten me the transformers set that had bright green construction vehicles that assembled in to a big robot of some sort. at some point I figured out where they were hiding presents, so I would sneak in there in the morning or late at night, carefully take all of them out, play with them (complete with making sweet sound effects) and then carefully put them back in the box.

my mom eventually figured it out and I think she had every intention of punishing me, but I don't think she went through with it. at least not completely. so I did not learn any lessons at all! a merry christmas was had by all!
That was back when toys didn't have 8 billion twist ties in every box.

Fire Phone is pretty cool so far. The Amazon AppStore seems to have a good amount of apps. And you can't use the Google play store, but you can sideload a lot of the stuff on there. The Playstation app is t on amazons store, but I was still able to get it installed.

I picked up my Kmart order.  Lord of Shadows looks cool in the box.  I felt bad that it appeared I was the only person in the store that could afford deodorant and shampoo.  Then I saw a woman with a brand new Iphone 6 pay for her stuff with an EBT (food stamps) card.  Obama phone?  I didnt feel bad anymore.

She probably pushed the cart out to load up the stuff into an Escalade on 30s.

If you can't tell the difference between HD and SD, then that's probably something with your vision. Lossy and lossless is probably something with your hearing. What would you say is going on with a person if they can't tell the difference between something being "good" or "bad" (in your opinion)? Dumb may be an oversimplification of your context, but you're still positioning yourself as being better than others and coming off like a douche as far as I can tell.
Just as with visuals and hearing having objective standards, consistent characterization and plot does as well. Deciding whether something is good or bad is subjective, yes, but you can absolutely point out, objectively, inconsistencies with the way characters are presented or problems with a story's plot. It can absolutely be objective to say "This event does not lead logically into this event," or "This event conflicts with an earlier event in the show."

Somebody who can't tell between HD and SD does not apply a sufficient level of differentiation to what they're looking at. The same is true for lossy vs lossless, and the same is true for not seeing inconsistencies in characterization or plot. Granted visual and hearing can have a physical limitation at fault, but honestly I'd say it's more likely that most people who don't notice these things simply aren't paying that much attention to the subject matter. They might be watching television while playing with their phone or computer, thinking about other things, etc.. That doesn't mean the person is dumb, obviously, but it does point to differences in interest and focus.

Another good analogy to how people watch TV/movies very differently is to look at people's driving. I know we all constantly see people drifting in and out of their lane, not using turn signals, showing inconsistent speed, etc., and when we drive past those people we see that they're texting or singing along to the radio or talking to people in the car/on the phone. People drive with varying amounts of attention on that task, just as people listen to music and watch TV/movies with different levels of focus. Obviously driving with little attention is problematic, but people enjoying media do so in all kinds of manners and there's no real expectation of how closely they'll follow the subject.

I've got bad hearing. As a result I've always had to pay a lot of attention to what people are saying in order to understand them. I'll hear somebody say something, but not quite understand what they said, and will go over the sound they made in my head and reconstruct it based on the context of the conversation. I'll pay a lot of attention to their face and how they're saying things in order to help understand what they meant. This level of focus carries over to just about everything I do--I'm constantly paying very close attention to how characters act and interact, how the story is progressing, etc., so that if I don't hear something I'm able to still understand what's going on well enough. This also leads to me being pretty good at spotting inconsistencies as a result--which carries over to games and reading and the like as well.

With my background I do tend to notice and focus on lots of small things that other people gloss over. The sequence of events and how a character is portrayed are things that have objective components. "The character said this," and "the character did that," are not debatable, nor is the order in which things happened, nor is the way one character responds to the actions of another. Some of my posts about TV shows, movies, games, etc., are in line with calling out these inconsistencies. We all have a tendency to assume that our perception of our experiences are shared by others with the same experiences (meaning that if I play a game somebody else who played it will perceive the game the same way I did.) With the number of times my perception of games/TV/movies has been questioned, however, shared perception didn't seem to be the case. My post earlier was from that perspective--I was asking whether people notice those things as well and just write them off as unimportant or if they just don't notice them at all.

I don't think there's anything in my post that indicates a problem with either of those two options, and honestly having re-read it several times now I think the perception you had of the post is something you brought to the reading rather than it being in the post itself.

Aaand that's my last post on the subject until it invariably comes up again.

My parents kept all the Xmas toys in a locked room in the basement. One year we, all of us, took the hinges off the door and checked out all the gifts ahead of time. I think we all concluded afterward that this was a bad idea even though it was exciting at the time. We only told our Mom about it a few years back. I think we are all kind of ashamed about it. Also it made Christmas anti-climactic.

Hey guys, when I was a kid I snuck out of the house a lot late at night.  I never told my mom and she never found out!  How cool am I!

Seriously though, funny stories all.  I wonder if Therm has a story from his childhood that he can critique.  Maybe he can point out the dumb things he did and say how it could have been so much better.

I can't tell if this post is more depressing, or Therms dissertation.

It's amazing how many people legitimately believe the free phone is an Obama thing. There's even www.obamaphone.com now. It's not official, but has a lot of information and links about how to get one through the Lifeline Assistance Program.

Pacific Rim was a fun movie. I even liked the non-fighting parts unlike most it seems.
I thought they rushed that stuff too much, especially the relationship between the male and female lead. They didn't really go much into the sync or the technology of how the robots worked or any of that stuff. They brought it up and tried to address it, but did so so briefly that it just made it stand out as not being handled well. It would have been better to not focus on that aspect of the movie at all IMO.

I kind of enjoyed all of this talk between objectivity and subjectivity, but should I really bother to read that extremely long post by Therm?

I've never cared about the surprise element of finding out what presents I got. I always wanted to know as soon as possible, and knowing never ruined my enjoyment of getting the gifts. Well...turns out my wife is the same way. We've been buying presents for everybody and each other for the past 2-3 weeks, but didn't really care enough to hide or have our presents from the other person hidden. A few days ago we just said fuck it and gave each other all our gifts early, no wrapping required. We'll still get stuff from parents and siblings and the like on Christmas day...but why wait on our gifts to each other?

So yeah, I've already got my Golds and a ton of games for anniversary/bday/xmas to enjoy. :D/

Man I really hope the new Star Wars is good  I realize it's just the inner kid in me and I'll be let down but still be good dammit!

Naa. It was all "I'm right and you're wrong!" and "Objectivity is real, bitches!" and "STFU!" and getting in the last word.

The lead actor was pretty forgettable, but I liked the other characters.

I love giving people presents and seeing their face when they open it. It's part of the fun :0

The hubs on the other hand tried to figure out all his presents before hand and usually knows what 90% of them are by the time he opens them. Drives me crazy. This is what your post reminded me of.

A co-worker just said "Sooooome" while trying to decide how to phrase a bug report. Almost instantly I started singing "...once told me the the world is kinda (foamy? stoney? Roney?). I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed." And now that (objectively) shitty all-star song is stuck in my head for like the 5th time in the last couple weeks. I hate when (subjectively) shit songs haunt you for weeks on end.

Also you're welcome for sticking it in your head.

It's like you all just got done with a Contemporary Media Studies class in college.

The Transformers movies are't "high cinema" and aren't meant to be analyzed as such.  They're popcorn fluff designed for mass audiences.

The debate as to whether that's "good" as opposed to true art designed for sophisticated folks has been going on since the early 1900s.

I dislike most art like paintings and sculptures because most of what is considered "fine" art looks like something a 3rd grader could do.  A cool photograph is almost always nicer to look at than a painting.  Especially if the painting is from someone like Picasso or Andy Warhol.  They just threw shit up on a canvas and somehow people are convinced they should spend thousands or even millions on it.  Same thing with those contemporary sculptures they like to put in art galleries.

Is the game not much fun? I actually considered buying it when it came out but didn't.
I'm afraid to call anything terrible now, but, well maybe it's not terrible, but it's kind of boring. And I like classic arcade games and updatings of them. This one I think is off the mark.

I've seen plenty of big dumb action movies that also manage to have characters that aren't terribly annoying. I don't think people who dislike the Transformer movies are disappointed in the robots fighting. It's everything that happens in between that is terrible and makes me want to kick a puppy.

Did you give it a listen? It's pretty catchy. :whistle2:
Yes I did asshole. Then I played the song for the co-worker that got all-star suck in my head. And then that baby monkey shit got stuck in my head. Asshole.

Im going to listen to the Sword & Sworcery soundtrack to cleanse my palette.

The action segments in those tend to be bad, too, though. Just as with Man of Steel and the like where it's just big explosions and overly-long fight scenes.

Amazon $25 gift card for $20, $5 Toys R Us Gift Card included, and free $5 Gyft gift card if you are a new member.

I just did this using google checkout. I then used the gyft $5 to buy a $15 amazon gift card. So for $30 I got:

$40 amazon credit

(2) $5 Toys R Us promo credits

So $50 for $30

The Gyft app is pretty cool, it virtually holds all your gift cards and it looks like you can add your physical cards as well. Best Buy, Gamestop, Target, etc. are participating.
