Reduced Price Game Guides: Thread Seven
I think when this happens, it is usually a new media employee who thinks it is just a standard price drop and goes ahead and slaps them all with stickers.

It very randomly happens around here, usually around Christmas with the seasonal help.
Yeah, it was only on one guide, the other of the same title had a full price stickers.

Odd indeed.
The only problem I have with guides is that they are too damn expensive... you think when the internet got really huge, and everyone is exchanging their own free guides and tips, print guides would become cheaper to combat that, but instead they got MORE expensive. I'm all for Best Buy dropping guides down to $9.99... used their coupon to get Rogue Galaxy for $5 today. Would have paid full price probably if it didn't drop.
I really don't understand their flawed logic in RAISING the price of guides either, since I was kind of used to paying $14.99 a pop for guides back in the Silent Hill era and before that even.

I seriously don't know why they price them around $19.99 now, when as Roufuss even said, all that info is available on the net anymore.

Ahhh well, can't understand SOME business practices of companies...:whistle2:#

Oh and before I forget, when I was majorly guide hoarding still, the place I found with the most guides marked at a penny was North Jersey(in Seacaucus area to be precise).

Less demand means less profit per guide, but for those that want them, they'll pay.

Not according to Prima and Brady they're not, since they seem to pump out umpteen copies of each guide they put out, so much so that they are everywhere until they penny out.

I found a Mega Man ZX guide and Penny Arcade Vol. 2 at GS this afternoon. Of course, I was shot down. I thought about offering to preorder something as incentive, but I was pretty sure I wasn't going to get anywhere with two GS employees. One alone, maybe. Not two.

Oh Gamestop, why do you tease me so...

A little late to the party, but I got everything, except for the pokemon book. Thanks for the heads up once more. Got extra copies of Crackdown and Sonic for trade.
Megaman ZX got pennied at GS?

I guess I missed that one =/
yea that was part of that huge drop earlier in the year

Well, I guess they're technically reduced price guides. For a dollar each at Goodwill:

guidesjt0.jpg

All three are nice and minty :). I'm keeping DWVII and MvC2. Sword of the Berserk is going to the trade list.

Oh, and in case they disappear from the website this weekend, these are the current 9.99 guides at Best Buy:

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (Prima)
Pokemon Ranger (Prima)
Rogue Galaxy (yea, we all already know this)
You & Wii

Damn nice good willfind. I never stop into those shops cause I don't ever expect, and never have found video game or related items =\
Hmm. Is another drop to be expected on Monday? :whistle2:k
I don't know, but isn't Monday a holiday? I don't imagine they'd do that on a holiday.

You should always stop by Good Will if your passing by as while it'll be worthless most of the time I still remember the one time I was thinking about if I should go or not and did finding Dragon Force (missing the manual) for .79 on that visit. Since then I always stop by the one near the mall if it's open while I'm at the mall just incase they had anything good donated recently.

I just looked at the back of the guides and saw $3.25 price stickers on all three. I would have paid that, but the cashier only charged the regular softcover price of one dollar for each.

Ah, cheap guides and price mistakes. It's like the very best of CAG, all rolled into one find.

True. Stopping at Goodwill is mostly a waste of time, but you can strike gold every once in a while. That's where I found my copies of Earthbound, FFIII, and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.

Hmm... looks like the GamePro coupons expired today? Guess I'll have to wait on Rogue Galaxy after all. Hopefully the June GP coupons show up before it gets pennied.

Nearest Goodwill to me is Shamokin area, but I have hit that one before, on one of my many treks. LOL That's where I found the Zelda sword/shield replica for $8 and the Star Ocean guide(which went out in a massive trade deal like 2 weeks later).

And.....this week......my one friend wants to do her 'Christmas shopping'(I know, in MAY, I was like WTF?!?!?!?!?!), but I'm not gonna complain because it ain't on MY dime. :whistle2:D I'm a total cheapass.

Not at the Salvation Army stores round here. All our Goodwill stores closed up a while ago and the SA stores charge $5-6 per guide, if they get any in that is.

You should give them all your extra guides. That way, when they don't sell at $5 to $6 they'll lower the price in general for game guides. Then, when the rare Final Fantasy Tactics or Suikoden 2 guide comes in, it'll be marked at $1 to $3

I should, really, since the extras of the dreck guides I have aren't selling at ANY price on my TL. Of course, anytime I've been grabbing RPG guides lately, I've been holding them aside and trickling them out, since people did a mad dash for them all the LAST time I found a bunch.

My one local Salvation Army has a copy of the Resident Evil Nemesis and GTA III guides for sale. Funny thing is, I wanted at least the GTA III, but ended up trading here for it when I couldn't find it 'in the wild'.

So, anymore I'm no longer stupid and don't trade games or guides, since some are near impossible to find anymore.

God, I miss the days of EB selling used guides for $1-3.

I was looking for old PS1 RPGs games on eBay and stuff and noticed that the guides often sell for more than the games! It's funny how they're in such high demand

I went to one EB Games yesterday in Baton Rouge and picked up Popolocrois (PSP), MK Shaolin Monks (PS2), and Hunter: The Reckoning Redeemer (XB). Later when I went out to pick up dinner, I decided to check at another store to just see what they had in the bins. I decided to pick up a Logitech DriveFX Wheel for the 360 for $49.99.

Youve never heard the phrase "Christmas shopping in May, it's the cheapass way"?

Nope, but hell, since we're going to an area I haven't been to in a while(or at least been able to stop at any of the stores in the area), I'm gonna hit every fuckin GS and BB in that area.

I'm normally down that way for business about once a week, but the person I work for doesn't believe in stopping for a bite(specially since I recommend the one exit with 3 GS stores and a BB and they know I like to look for guides, etc).

Picked up the Rogue Galaxy guide for $10 today. There's one left, which might still be there when it gets pennied, but I'm not bothering with the chance at this point. Unfortunately my expired coupon scanned, but they would have to override it, and they gave me some BS about it not working because it was marked down from $19.99 to $9.99, but I wasn't going to argue. Good enough deal on such a monstrous guide.

finally found 1 Disgea 2 at EB. they were nice about it since it was only 1. also, are ..hack // GU vol1 and SMT: Devil Summoner pennied yet?

yeah, like Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 guide for nearly $100.. complete BS. yet it sold for that much.

I recently bought the Devil Summoner guide, it's still $5.
Saw 2 Rogue Galaxy guides today. I almost bit for $10 but I left them. I'm hoping I'll find one when it pennies.
If BB does GamePro coupons in June that have a $5 off guide coupon, I'd recommend picking it up at $4.99 + tax. They may not last long at a penny, plus you're likely to be paying that from a CAG if sold with shipping figured in.

Yeah, if you are interested, pick up the Rouge Galaxy guide now while you can. The days of penny guides are pretty much gone, since there is no forwarning anymore. That and stores generally seem to be cracking down. At the last penny drop almost no one was able to find anything.

Where is Shamokin? I think I drove by it and someone made a just like, "Shamokin cock." We thought it was funny at the time. Please don't take offense, playing in a band I have some friend with a "different" sense of humor.

I got a penny guide from Game Stop today!!

NBA Street Homecourt =\ They had Tales of Abyss which I thought was also a penny but it came up at retail.

Shamokin is down by the Frackville exit of I-81. They closed a Kmart down that way about 6 months to a year ago when Kmart did their restructuring.

BTW, I stopped in the Frackville(Schuylkill Mall) Kmart and was shocked to find it's open now. Last time I was down that way, there was brown paper on all the windows and the store was dark. Only found a copy of Rumble Roses there, but no one around to PC it as usual, so I left it.

And I havent seen any Double Jump guides pennied. They seem to do a more typical markdown scheme with thier guides...$10...$8...$5...might get it for $5 but gosh if it's a guide you want, why wait it out to save $5.

I've gotten Disgaea 2, Phantom Brave, Castlevania, Makai and Genji pennied but it was pure look. Pretty much found em all at a hole in the wall store no one visited.

FYI double jump doesnt decide how their guides are marked down. Thats up to the store.
Where have you BEEN?!

Sorry for the extended absence folks. I'm hoping to be able to be active again around here fairly soon.
We were wondering where you went. Good to hear from you.

Insanity overtook me. I hit the open road with reckless abandon and tried to sneak into Mexico. They sent me back so y'all are stuck with me.

Give 66 a hug for me. =)

I guess you didn't bribe the Mexican cops, huh? That's pretty much all it takes ;)
She'll send you a message soon.

For the first time, I got a huge number of guides from one store. I stopped by Gamestop to check out the buy 2 get 1 promotion and there were several stacks of guides by the bin where the sale games were. I saw that some of them were guides that I thought had been pennied, so I waited for the store to quiet down a bit and then asked if they were on sale or something, and they said they were free -- take 'em. I left some, since they had a lot of multiples and I didn't wannt to look totally greedy. Here's what I got (the ones with asterisks by them I have multiples of for trading):

*Star Ocean: Till the End of Time
*Guitar Hero II (is this the most useless guide ever or what?)
*Xenosaga II
*Perfect Dark Zero
*Tony Hawk's Project 8
Super Dragonball Z
NBA Live 07
*Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops
*SOCOM US Navy Seals Combined Assault
*Superman Returns
*Reservoir Dogs
Justice League Heroes
Lord of the Rings II: The Battle for Middle Earth (One for PC, one for 360)
NCAA Football 06
Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime
*Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
The Sims 2: Open for Business
Xmen Legends II
Neverwinter Nights 2: World Editor Guide
Dark Messiah of Might & Magic
is valkyrie profile 2 pennied yet?
It's an awful guide.. but i dont think there's another one out yet!

There seems to be a lot of "items" missing, and the explanations are so so..

Going by the usual $9.99 price reduction that occurs before a guide drops(most times, though it ISN'T always an indicator), the following are good candidates for pennying(if we have a drop this month).

Rogue Galaxy
You & Wii(already pennied @ GS)
Pokemon Ranger(Prima Games version)
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue/Red Rescue Team(Prima Games version)

My gamestops scan the guides and they ring up as "no sale" or something similar. They don't let me take them. It sucks really.

My GS never has any guides mentioned in this thread. They either pull them really fast or I'm too slow. I never have any luck with this stuff.

But this whole penny guide stuff is awesome. I had no idea that this even occured until I read this thread
