I am wondering if Fushigi Yugi is good.

I read the reviews and details of it but I want peoples opinions on it.

whoever saw this anime tell me :D
My cousin said that the whole first box set was iffy... he wasn't sure if he liked it or not. Then he watched the first episode on the second box and knew that he absolutely hated it.

So based on that, I'd say it's not so good.

My wife absolutley loves it. IMO, it's a little too "soap opera-ish". There's a ton of (melo)drama in the show; a lot of "oh no, she can't be with him because of X situation, I wish they would just talk & resolve it. Oh great, they finally settled everything for 2 episodes, but now something ELSE has come up...". Don't get me wrong, I didn't hate it - one of the characters in particular (Chichiri, I want to say his name was) I really enjoyed. But it was a bit much for me, all said & done.

I guess it would really depend on what your stance is on "relationship anime". If you like them, this is probably one of the best I've seen.

Fushigi Yugi is Ultra-Shoujo... ultra-ultra-mary-sue-shoujo. Like Harem Anime for girls.

This is a pretty vauge description, but I'm spolier-tagging it anyway, just in case:
Basically, annoying teenager falls into world in book, becomes a 'powerful' priestess (powerful in title only, no holy magic or nothing'), and has to collect 7 warriors to save the kingdom. Did I mention the 7 warriors are attractive men covering the full range of boy-band stereotypes?

But wait, Shoujo needs angst! Let's throw in the disgruntled former best friend as a rivla priestess, some sexual assault for shock value, and start bringing up sex in general to make things more 'dramatic'.

Now we need to wrap everything up, so... well... let's go a lil' shonen here and kill most everybody, then tack on a "happy, romantic" ending where the survivors work everything out. Yay for them!

Can you tell I'm not super-fond of this show? I should warn you, tho', back when I watched this one, it had an odd effect on me: I couldn't stop! Me and my friends would go through a disc, groaning and WTF-ing the whole way... and then just put in another one at the end and do it again. It's like a train wreck... it's fasinating in its awfulness. ;) I've even toyed with the idea if buying it... but that's mostly for Chihiri. I liked him. He's silly.

I liked Fushigi Yugi it was pretty damn good. The thing I remember the most is the Bird's soundclip is the same as the one used at the begining of the Silverhawks' cartoon. Surprised not many people are all over Giant Robo... damn waited almost 7 years to see the conclusion to that anime.

Fushigi Yugi is the BEST TV & OVA show. Yeah, I got Season Set 1/2, OVA, OVA 2 & the latest graphic novel version. I remembered i pay $95 each season 1/2, $45 for OVA and $25 for OVA (Eikoden). Lucky u all now you can get it for cheap cheap cheap ass!
The pacifism got annoying because it was basically a blatant rip off of what Rurouni Kenshin did... except Kenshin actually did the "no kill" thing without pissing me off. Vash absolutely refuses to lay the smack down on anyone and he's a complete pussy for the entire show. I'm not saying that Trigun needed to be a straight up action show like Hellsing -- I just think that they could've handled that aspect of the show much, much better. As in, if they had changed anything, it would've been better than the dreck we actually got. Vash is potentially the most annoying character in any anime ever and the way he goes about being a pacifist makes Trigun feel like a shitty attempt at copying the superior Rurouni Kenshin.
don't you think you're being just a BIT TOO bias?

Twelve Kingdoms is well worth the 120 for the entire series, although the CAG in me would prefer to see it in the 80-100 range at least. I hope they produce more episodes someday though weird situation with that.
don't you think you're being just a BIT TOO bias?
lol, not when he's just giving his opinion. You care too much about what other people think. ;)

Having said that, I've never seen Trigun.

I would really like to get the X series set, but I don't really have the money right now. Eh well, I have so much I want to play/watch right now as it is. ^_^
I ended up getting Vandread. I've been eyeing the Sakura collection for a LONG time now. I will probably either get it in a month or 2 or it will finally be sold out.
Just keep in mind that Geneon's losing the license for the show soon. So if you want it, you'd better pick it up ASAP. It's damn good stuff, too.

I love Fushigi Yuugi. Love it. The OVAs are terrible, but the TV show is absolutely fantastic in its dramatic-but-frustrating soap opera-ish-ness. I was a bit skeptical after the first few episodes, but it quickly won me over with quality storytelling and engaging characters.

Also, I'd say it's grossly misrepresentative to characterize the show as "harem anime for girls." That would imply that the show is overly-simplistic and vapid - it's actually the exact opposite.
So , what did you guys buy from rightstuf deals?

im going to wait til dec 21-23 to buy em and still thinking :D
Yup, me too. I'm tempted by Giant Robo, but if I get it I'd like to get something with it to grab the free shipping. Is Vandread more of a comedy? The description makes it sound like it, and if so, it may just be my kind of show. ;)
Yup, me too. I'm tempted by Giant Robo, but if I get it I'd like to get something with it to grab the free shipping.
I'm going to wait also. I want Giant Robo, but I'm not sure what else. That Vandread set is tempting, maybe escaflowne.

Y'know, that Shingu kinda got glossed over here, but I looked up a review which gave it a glowing recommend & watched the trailer on the official site, and it looks really good. Can anyone tell me if price-wise, that's a good buy on that set? I need more anime like I need more holes in my head...but.... :whistle2:?

I placed an order for Patlabor 3 and Chobits.. but.. I can't believe Chobits was back ordered so quickly! I placed my order right after I got the email, too.. and just got an email saying that it didnt ship to me. Does anyone know if they're ever going to get any more and if so, when? I'm not sure what this means by "Reserved for Order". I hope they'll get more copies to fulfil most orders..

1 - pd12452 - Chobits DVD Box 1 (Hyb) - 0.00 - On Order From Manufacturer
1 - pd12453 - Chobits DVD Box 2 (Hyb) - 0.00 - On Order From Manufacturer
1 - bundle071 - Chobits Mini Box 1+2 DVD Bargain Bundle (Hyb) - 39.99 - Reserved For Your Order

Reseved for Order means that yours is waiting to be shipped.

My Noein Vol 1 shipped; but Paranoia Agent & Saiyuki Reload Boxsets are On Order. I just hope it doesnt take a month like they did with the Geneon sale.

Heh, I thought Fushigi Yugi was pretty good. Although there were so many WTF moments in there, it got a little ridiculous. I have a hard time with what happened with Yui. I just don't believe it. And Miaka was just so STUPID. Seriously, she could be one of the dumbest anime characters ever. The things she does in that show make me want to punch her.

But, that's what a soap-opera is supposed to do I suppose, and it was enjoyable. I reallly didn't expect it to be as FUNNY as it was. There is a lot of humor. It got a little bit more serious during the last half, but there are a TON of laugh out loud moments. And for that I'd recommend it. I'm a fan of Studio Pierrot too so, that's a bonus.

I'm tempted to buy the OVA set for $25, but honestly that's just a little too expensive for me. This show has been out for years, it should be obtainable for < $20.
LadyS, you write a darn good review from a sane and rational point of view.

I think I love for " But wait, Shoujo needs angst!" alone. =)
how do I check the order status?
On Rightstuf's frontpage, there's a link in the upper right area of the screen that says "Where's my stuff."

Ordered Vandread for my BF from the weekly specials. Though before christmas is over I hope to pick up Votoms and volume 1 of Stellvia.

That's a really good price IMO. I picked up the first disc and artbox last year from the 12 days of Christmas sale for $15 I think. I watched it and rented the other discs, then bought them from DDD during the last 20% off sale.

BTW I love this series, partly I think because it was such a sleeper (as in, I didn't see anybody talking about it). I love the characters, and the story, and the art style. To top it all off it has a good ending IMO, which is something most anime sorely lack in my experience. Oh, and the opening theme song is awesome too! :)

ordered Samurai Champloo Complete Collection and my Basilisk Vol. 1 LE (the last copy on RS) shipped a few days ago :whistle2:D unfortunately i won't be watching either of them until i get back from my cruise :( ohhhh welllll. hopefully it doesn't take a month to ship out my samurai champloo collection!

And if that link isn't there, click on the 'Online Store' link. There's a small sign-in link underneath the 'Shawn's Deal of the Day' logo.

(And thanks to Drahken for mentioning the $18 Excel set... mine came in the other day. Now I have the artbos and all the funky freebies that came in the singles releases! Yay for me! :D )

they had problems verifying my mailing address with the CC since it is getting ship to my job. had to call them and take care of that. now the item is on backorder and they wont be shipping them out until next yr.

wow, Elfen Lied for $25 is a steal. Admittedly, it's more cheap thrills and fights with less emphasis on story. though the story is good if you can make a pretty big leap of logic.

And if you don't mind forcing yourself to tolarate some of the most annoyingly stupid characters this side of Trigun. But we've been down this road before...

Larger-than-expected paycheck + knowledge of upcoming Christmas Money= Ordering the X Remix set, the Shingu set, and Kaliedo Star: new Wings vol.2 (from the weekly sales), just because I can. :D

(I have far too much anime now. ;) )

Ended up pulling the trigger on Samurai Champloo. Too good of a deal to pass. Also picked up Record of Lodoss War for $23.99.

I ordered Escaflowne since everyone had good words about it and I got the Boogiepop Phantom + movies set as well. I'd been wanting it for a while and got free shipping. :D

Thank God someone bumped this up. I nearly forgot about it. I'll place my order in the morning. Till what standard time does this go to i.e. PST, EST, etc.?

Woot, seems my Paranoia Agent & Saiyuki Reload boxsets shipped on Friday. Hopefully through all the last minute christmas mail i'll get them at least by Thursday.

I ordered

X TV Series Remix DVD Set (1-5) (Hyb)
Votoms, Armor Trooper DVD Collection (S)

I'm pondering the CCS set since it's going out of print and the price ain't bad for 1760 minutes of Entertainment but that's still alot to spring on a blind shoujo buy.

Allready have Giant Robo, Escaflowne and Outlaw Star or I would have jumped on those.
Thank God someone bumped this up. I nearly forgot about it. I'll place my order in the morning. Till what standard time does this go to i.e. PST, EST, etc.?
Whichever one Iowa's in... I know it'll end at 10 Pacific Time.

I ordered the full CCS set (my other set was a HK set, and I needed to replace it with the "real thing") along with Giant Robo.
Whichever one Iowa's in... I know it'll end at 10 Pacific Time.
Iowa is CST.

BTW people, it's not on sale (I don't think), but Fighting Spirit makes a great Christmas present for yourself or anyone who's not a moron.
And if you don't mind forcing yourself to tolarate some of the most annoyingly stupid characters this side of Trigun. But we've been down this road before...
Well, the stupidity of Elfen Lied is made up by the pure hillarity of watching a character with false body parts constantly falling off.

Went with Paranoia Agent, Elfen Lied (my two wants for the sale), and Genshiken (after reading everything posted here about it and elsewhere).

Really really really wanted to grab Vandread and Cardcaptor Sakura after they screwed me the first time it was on the weekly deals (they had it in stock, but canceled my order and then when I called them to see what was up and to place an order for it again, they outright denied me for some reason).

I'll try to get Excel Saga from BB and hopefully it will come in good enough condition. I'm sure there will be other deals on it either studio or through GCO or something else. Same thing with Escaflowne and I'm in no rush to see it.

X TV series sounded intriguing, but I spent enough as it is this season/year and I don't know too much about it. Same thing about Full Metal Panic Fumoffu even though I hear nothing but good things about it, but I don't want to come into the series in the middle of it.

Edit: Going back for Kamichu because it sounds awesome.l

All my stuff is backordered which doesn't bother me one bit. It'll probably be till early/mid February when they ship out/arrive at this point and that's fine by me. That's actually part of the reason why I ordered on the last day.

well i guess i spoke a little too soon :whistle2:D my order is currently processing and my CC has a pending charge for $79.99 SWEEET! hopefully ill get it before i have to go back to school next week...
