Salty I need to re-do my profile in CAG4.0
As the original deal morphed into a game deal and guitar advice thread, I decided to place the original BB deal behind spoiler tags for a reference point. And I listed the current deals below. The guitar purchase is the most difficult part for us beginners, so read the advice in the thread

Too busy to read the entire thread? Then try these following posts for the guitar advice. Thanks to SmileyMcSmiles for all the help :applause:
>>guitar advice, initial posts #26, 34, 35
>>guitar accessories, initial posts #49, 51, 56
>>learn about Rondo Music guitars on post 642
This should help get you started.

Guitar+Bass Version*****

Original Version*****

Original DEAL behind this Spoiler
Bestbuy has a separate, two week flier for music gear and they're advertising Rocksmith game bundle+ Epiphone guitar for $199.98 and you get a $50 giftcard with purchase of the game/guitar bundle.

Ad is a bit odd in that they only list sku's for the game bundle and standalone guitar (#2633103, 2633149, 2273055), so they may be doing in-store bundling. Plus they list the game + guitar bundle as a 10 savings over buying everything separate

I'll let the musician CAGs speak to the quality of the guitar;)

UPDATE: Bestbuy finally got the site updated with the offer.
Link Dead
Like I said before, seems like they are doing an in-store bundle instead of selling the official Rocksmith guitar kit. Won't know for sure until it's bought

UPDATE #2: deal is definitely an in-store bundle of standalone guitar + game bundle. Guitar is an Epiphone LP jr with a cherryburst finish and no strap or picks are included. Asked about substituting a different guitar model but bundle price won't activate if you switch it out

The game comes with the necessary cable. So no need to buy extra cables unless you want to extend the cable length. And if that's what you want, then the simpliest and cheapest way to go is with a USB extension cable (female to male ends)

USB maximum length is 15 feet, unless you have a powered hub. Something to keep in mind when you look at extension cables.

So if I'm just starting out where is the best place to find on-line lessons, etc.? I used to play a lot about 10 years ago but I was never that good - I could play along with a bunch of 90s grunge albums but that was about it - and Stairway, of course. No solos though. Anyway, I'm starting to get back into it but I think I'd like to develop a solid foundation and an understanding of how the guitar actually works (scales, etc.) this time.

If you are looking for free lessons, there is no better then http://www.justinguitar.com/
They are all video based lessons and there are TONS of them.

I am going to throw out one more recommendation for a good beginner amp...
The Roland Cube series
They start at $99 for the 15 watt and go up from there (the sweet spot IMO is the 20 watt for $159 since it has more built in amp models and effects), they also have a battery powered version you can take on the road.
They sound pretty good for a solid state amp, and they have built in BOSS effects.
The kicker though is the "power squeezer" button which runs the amp at around 1 watt. This means you can turn up the gain and distortion for a full sound with out very much volume. For those who don't know: when you turn the master volume and gain down on an amp it not only gets "quieter" but you lose the fullness of the effects and tone. If you live in an apartment it is a MUST!

Really? Because I always found solos way easier than cords. Solos just require fast fingers and picking. But chords require spider hands and precise placement.

True but you shouldn't need anything too long since the pack-in cable is about 11ft.

The alternative is buying a 1/4" barrel adapter and a 1/4" instrument cable
Still no Rocksmith deals?
Check the OP. Only stand-alone deal was at Gamestop. But it's been a few days since anyone has mentioned buying it for $50. And GS website shows that the price went back up to $80, so the same thing may have happened in-store.

Alternative deals are the multi-purchase game deals at Amazon or TRU.

If you're comfortable with only having 1 pickup then I'd suggest going for it. Make sure to play it at a local guitar shop first before taking the plunge, though.

Bought it at Gamestop on Saturday at the Crossroads Mall for $49.99. I have a couple of guitars I never managed to learn how to play before laying around. Liking it so far.

You missed a lot of good advice. We all picked up your slack - no worries ;)

Just a quick game FYI - if you're like me and want to unlock everything in the game, make sure you aim to unlock the six double encore songs early! The encore system in this game is borked, and unless you feel like mastering every single arrangement of every single song, you will have a very hard time getting double encores on the later venues. I unlocked Star Spangled Banner just now after event 16, and I was lucky to do it. The game is evil, or Ubisoft is evil... probably both.

Unlocking the songs is worth it for Space Ostrich alone.

While in Target today, I saw that the temporary price cut to $69.99 is still holding and it's suppose to be good 'til 12/10
The game is evil, or Ubisoft is evil... probably both.
YES! x100:lol:

As for the double encores, I'm thinking of just erasing my save and starting over. But only once I get thru the entire Journey. I'm curious to see how well I can do on the 2nd go round

Not sure on the yamaha, but schecters are niiice guitars. Same goes for the Fender Tele. But, if you seriously just want a cheap, good beginner guitar, grab yourself one of these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001L8NFZW/ref=mp_s_a_1?qid=1323172676&sr=8-1

I've had mine for a while and I swear they're worth at least $200. Just whatever you get, change out the stock strings when you get it.
PS - Guitar Center has a coupon for $10 off or $50 off a $299+ purchase - http://www.guitarcenter.com/Promos/ClaimDiscountCoupon.aspx?pid=4363
LOL, that coupon sounded too good to be true, and sure enough, Ibanez, Yamaha and Fender guitars are excluded. In fact, I'm not sure what guitars would be included:
http://www.guitarcenter.com/couponexclusions

And if you don't mind a few minor cosmetic flaws for the Ibanez: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ibanez-ART100-Artist-Electric-Guitar-WHITE-SET-NECK-/130611659901#vi-content

Yeah ... figures ... I like how they hide it on another page too. Dunno, I get this sort of shady vibe from Guitar Center ... like it's the Best Buy of music stores and they probably never have the best prices ... but then I can't really say for sure. Maybe I'll stick to more local music shops instead.

I'd get a used guitar on ebay, buying really cheap new you will be getting a guitar with cheap tuners that may go out of tune easily. And may have a laminated body of wood.
Schector and ibanez are choices i would go with
I've been hooked on Seether recently. Really thinking about picking us the Shaun Morgan edition Shecter... I love that damn guitar. It's only $600 and Shecters seem to be really well made at that price...
No such thing as a bad Schecter.

From experience though, I wouldn't buy any guitars modeled after anyone. They tend to be made with lesser quality, because the company knows that the unit will sell because of the name alone.

Guitar Center has another coupon good for 15% off all Music Man guitars and basses. But I could've sworn that it used to say good on seven selct brands, including Schecter. Only stuck out to me becuase of all the recent talk on Schecter guitars. Guess they did a quick change out
EDIT: ok, just realized I saw the 15%off Schecter guitars at Musicians Friend. It's good thru 12/08

Could use it on the Dean XMT. And GC at least has a model for $99 instead of $139
For those who bought the Dean Vendetta XMT what gig bag have ya'll been buying?
I can tell you about 3 different bags.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002NZP1T0/ref=oh_o00_s01_i00_details
The On Stage Deluxe has decent padding, with interior lining and the straps seem strong. And the front pocket is actually big enough for use. This is the one I use when I put the guitar away for the night.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004BIUCN2/ref=oh_o00_s00_i01_details
The Bursewood is just like one reviewer said, a dust cover. Picked it up to use with my guitar stand. Basically no padding, no interior lining so the guitar can still fit on the stand while it's in this bag. Gonna have to get to a craft store to buy some felt or something to line the inside. Use this one for those times where I may stop playing for a bit but think I'll come back later in the day.
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Kaces-Electric-Guitar-Bag-101242311-i1171432.gc
My friend bought the Kaces bag at the same time she bought her SG junior but I tested it out with my Dean and it still fit. This bag has padding but it was less than the On Stage Deluxe. I'd guess it was half as thick. And the front pocket is pretty much only useful for papers. Straps were strong though

If you can go upwards of 400 you can snag a used carvin on ebay. They are custom guitars that rival prs made in the U.S. And are upwards of 1000 when ordered new. That would be the best quality for buck out of anything.

I have only played mine twice, and left it alone for awhile. I just start it up again and get a lot of feedback when playing. In between loading screen, they let I can play the guitar and there would be no feedback, but when I'm in the actual song, there's a constant feed back noise. Anyone know what's going on?

Don't know which system you use, but Disconnect any extras like Kinect or PS eye. The built-in Mics can really screw things up. Also make sure the break-away cable is properly seated.

Has anyone tried to return a guitar to BestBuy? I looked through their policy and non-returnable items include harmonicas(#-o), earbuds, mics, but not musical instruments in general. And they're not listed in the 14day policy so it should fall under the regular category of 30 days I assume.

They have these Dean XMT guitars for $99 which sounds like the one you guys recommend. Although I should have jumped on the $65 Jay Turser at Amazon. How are these for Rocksmith?

My only worry would be how well they pack it for shipping.

This next deal will probably only help SoCal CAGs. Found a craigslist ad for Schecter Warehouse sidewalk sale. Happens this Saturday in Burbank, CA. They're also clearing out Seymour Duncan and Daisy Rock stock

If you go, come back here and gloat about your finds:p

That looks to be the same guitar. Also Guitar Center has the XMT in satin natural for 99 and you can use the $10 cpn on it.
Try finding out if Best Buy carries it in-store. That way you can check it out before buying.

As for packaging, the box that my Dean was in had virtually no packaging. Just some extra cardboard in the corners and around the headstock and the guitar was in a foam sleeve. But the guitar box was shipped inside a larger box which had a whole bunch of padding. This was ordered thru Guitar Center and I had it shipped to store.

Does anyone know if the cable that comes with rocksmith will work for powergig? I know it isnt the best game. At four bucks at newegg its one a buck more than one dlc song for rocksmith.

I don't think so... Power Gig didn't use a real guitar - it was just a fake guitar with some crudely functioning strings.

Guitar Center and Musicians Friend are have competing sales right now. They each have a 16%off one select item sale (select brands), with Dean included as one of the brands. I'm including links so you can see the eligible brands.
GC http://www.guitarcenter.com/Promos/ClaimDiscountCoupon.aspx?pid=4417
MF http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pages/hohoho?icid=111209_001_hphf2_p2

And remember that the Schecter warehouse has the sidewalk sale today

Think crazedracer is right. Looked at gameplay vids and the game doesn't even try to track the string you play, just the fret you're holding. So the game essentially dumbed the guitar down to Guitar Hero play style of 5 frets instead of doing what Rocksmith does
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lVEFhP39Ws
Found it sad that the demo guy was more interested in showing that the guitar could plug in to an amp than showing gameplay.

But this vid cheered me up.

Sucks to hear. I'll update the OP.

Looks like the only remaining deals are Amazon, TRU and Target. And those deals are set to expire today, 12/10.

Wonder if we'll see any other deals before Christmas

You must go down there just to gloat at what I missed from living on the other coast. I was so tempted today at the Shaun Morgan Schecter with that 16% applied. I tried stacking the coupons on the off chance that it would work, but it didn't.

I'm not worthy!

But i'll camp out this time next year. Tailgate party!

I tried searching this thread, but I am most likely an idiot and could not find the answer. Does this game support acoustic electric guitars? I assume so but would like to know if anyone in this thread has tried it. Thank you, CAG community, for any answer.
Ubi Officially says that you can, but it may introduce feedback that you would not get through an electric. If you watch the videos, though, I saw a girl play one of the songs at 100% on an A/E guitar and it was fine...
See the post above and the following link to the RS forums.

Seems like it'll work as long as the guitar has a pickup and 1/4" jack.

Don't remember any CAG that used an acoustic electric. But hopefully they'll speak up if they did.

It worked fine with my acoustic electric. One thing I didn't like though was hearing the acoustic sound while also hearing the electric on the game even while using headphones. I ended up buying an electric to play the game and to keep my wife and child from hearing me late at night.
