RPG Thread V is really...grindy
But seriously, can't wait to play this game. Anyone have/recomment the classic control plus or whatever it's called? I have the regular classic controller, just wonderin if the handles make it significantly more comortable.
I have both the regular Classic Controller and the Classic Controller Pro and I will say that it is more comfortable for me to hold, and also the reconfigured shoulder buttons (i.e. basically the PS2 shoulder buttons versus the originals tiny circles for the z buttons is also nice though I don't think Tri really uses them). I guess having the cord come out of the top instead of the bottom is also nice, it never really bothered me but it keeps it with standard controller conventions.

Also I managed to get some more time into it today and basically am now out of the Tutorial phase and it feels just like the PSP game now, though I will say that I miss the training area that the PSP version I played (2/Freedom Unite) had where you could test out all of the weapons, though it seems like the weapons they kept are all fairly similar to what they used to be and they just got rid of the ones that were really confusing. Right now I'm rocking a medium Gun Bow and it is a blast to use, though you move kind of slow with it out.
I wish I could beat RPGs rather than play 30 hours and move on.
I seem to have the same problem, except I get around 40 hours into it and just kind of dwindle down. I haven't picked up Persona 4 in a few weeks and I'm about 40 hours in and I'm almost down with ToV with about 50 hours in.
It just seems harder and harder to just turn on an RPG and just play. I feel like I need time to relax, kick my feet up, and really dive into the game.
Ahhh ok. Thanks for the clarification on that. I remember playing the import Demon's Souls and someone 'invaded' my game. I was scared as all hell, figured the guy was going to obliterate me and steal my meager crap I had, then leave. Instead, he was like a bull in a china shop and annihilated almost every enemy in the world, then he just disappeared and left me to pick up all of what the enemies had dropped.
Yea, you'll be greeted with a variety of black phantoms. Some just want to kill you no matter the cost. Others will help you by killing all the monsters (as you mentioned). And some, actually want a fair duel (typically by bowing before attacking, etc). It really all depends. One thing though about being summoned as a blue phantom is that some Hosts mayl 'work' with the black phantoms and will try to get you killed as they summon you so they can get souls. Every time I'm summoned i always have my shield up & check my surroundings.

Bah, I'm used to the dreamcast :D Though those corrected triggers sound nice. I'll prolly pick one up on sale some time.

Also might look into bowguns. I always used the giant swords (don't remember names) due to their damage output, but were just too damned slow against some of the enemies.
How do you guys feel about Magna Carta, is the deluxe edition worth $15?
You mean the first one, right? Even if you hate it, you could probably sell it for twice that much. My local Mega Media wants $70 for it.

I saw that video for the first time a few weeks ago. Hilarious. Too bad about Arc Rise's voice acting. It looked fun, but the v/o just kills it.

Yeah the first one. I was reading some stuff about the game and it seemed good for $15. I wondering if anyone here had played it and had impressions on it.

Anyone know if there would be a way to turn off the VO in Arc Rise Fantasia? The game looks promising, but if there's one thing I can't stand, it's a bad dub.

Is anybody else gonna pick up Record of Agarest War? I like the limited edition bonuses, and the reaction of people on my friends lists when they will say, "What the fuck is that?"
The wedding scene (and the pre-wedding ones right beforehand) in DQV made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside :)
I still need to pick up DQV. Might tackle that one after I finish with Strange Journey.

I'm taking a break from Strange Journey after around 4-5 hours of grinding since I made it to the final boss.

I'm starting The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road for some light hearted RPG fun.
I still need to pick up DQV. Might tackle that one after I finish with Strange Journey.
Do it :) It's shaping up to be the best DQ I've ever played.
I'm outside the first boss in SMT: Strange Journey. Do any CAG have any tips for me before I start grinding?
The game isn't all that difficult until around the second half of the game.

I grabbed a Wii points card when they were on sell from target for 17 last week and picked up a rpg I have never played and one I loved. I grabbed Ogre Battle 64 and Super Mario RPG. I loved Super Mario RPG as a kid and it was my gateway RPG. I started playing Ogre Battle first since it was the new game and I am really enjoying it so far. I first heard about this game on RPG Backtracks podcast and it sounded really fun. I have gotten about six or seven missions in so far and want to keep playing it. The good thing is you can play it in hour or two hour chunks so far which fits my schedule.

Very similar to me. I used to think RPGs were dumb, but I just didn't give them a chance. Then after a friend let me borrow his copy of Mario RPG I got hooked. Then came Chrono Trigger and I had found my new favorite genre.

Still playing Persona (PSP) Snow Queen Quest. What a grind-fest. Not that it's bad, sometimes I like grinding. Sit back with nice glass of Black Label, listen to music, It's actually very relaxing. It makes my downtime at work less boring.

So, I was staring at my ever increasing backlog and other games I wanted to revisit and play but it's just so hard to decide and get motivated to chip away at it. I was thinking of like a community playthrough? We could argue, bicker, and decide a game that's in everyone's backlog or that everyone wants to play and play through the damn thing. I know most of the time these things fall flat on their face but I thought we could give it a try. Anyone interested?

^ What the hell, that's what these forums are for. My back log of RPGs isn't too big. I have Tales of the Abyss (about halfway through), Xenosaga (again at the halfway mark), & SMT: Devil Summoner 2 (about 20 hours in). All three have been sitting there for the past few months. Not really sure which one to start up again. I want to beat the entire Xenosaga series so after I finish the first one I'll be heading onto part 2, even though I hear it's boring.

The General Gaming Board actually did this a while back. I don't think it panned out.

I loved Jeanne D'arc. I've been stuck on the same mission for years, the one where
It's just Jeanne and Roger against all the evil furries, when you first get Jeanne back after her "death."
I could be wrong, but I remember DDS being easier than the rest. I think I did a lot of grinding for fun, though.
No you're probably right. You didn't have to worry about fusions or capturing demons.
^ I'm confused, so you think it's a dumb idea? Or it's the greatest thing you've ever heard?
Maybe I worded it wrong, but thought it was a fine idea.

DDS2's boss was a bitch. I got to it way under-level and it kick my ass.

I thought the boss right before the final boss in DDS2 was worse, frustration-wise.

I'm down with the community playthrough. I have Lost Odyssey, DDS, Tales of the Abyss, Shadow Hearts, and Rogue Galaxy in my available backlog. I'd also consider a playthrough of Grandia III, Suikoden V, or Shadow Hearts Covenant.

I got to the second disk of Lost Odyssey and of coursed stopped. I am currently in one of those internal debates over whether to start over or just power through and finish it even if I can't remember what is going on.

I put Nocturne on hold to try and finish up FF13, but I'd like to finish it before moving on to the DDS series. I still need to pick up DDS2, and I should probably do that soon before that reprint they released not long ago starts getting hard to find. In Nocturne, I was just doing the Amala Network dungeons and just got to the part where you
have to chase Dante around.

Still slowly working my way thru FF13 tho. I've been stuck on Chapter 11 for about 3 weeks now!! I just haven't had much time for gaming recently and I really hate that. Man, being a grown up really sucks.

Anyone play Knights in the Nightmare and have an opinion on it either way? I'm thinking of picking it up before it disappears.

I'm also thinking about Knights in the Nightmare. Didn't really care for the other Dept. Heaven game I played (Riviera was interesting but got tedious quick for me) but this looked cool. Any word on a US release of the PSP port? Might hold off till then if there are significant additions and the controls aren't broken from lack of stylus.

Edit: While I can't find any confirmation on a US release, apparently the PSP port is good, but not a huge departure? (taken from 1up.com's info from Famitsu
(8/8/7/8, 31 points): The PSP port of Sting's Nintendo DS original isn't much different from before, and the scores also went along similar lines. "It's not a game for everyone," one reviewer said, "simply because there's a lot to remember and the gameplay's complex. Learn everything, though, and you'll get addicted to the unique charms of this game."

"You have to give it several tries before you learn the tricks involved," another added. "There is a tutorial, yes, but it's incomplete and hard to follow -- I wish it offered more practical hints to gameplay."

Did the controls suffer any from losing the Nintendo DS's touch screen? Not really: "You wouldn't realize the controls had changed at all if you haven't played the DS version. It does make item management a bit trickier, though."

Finished Strange Journey! I grinded for like 2-3 hours straight today to get up to 80. I sorta cheated though, by summoning 2 demons using the password system. Oh well.

Damn, I didn't even know there was a PSP port. I would love the improved graphics, but it seems like it would be a lot more fun with the stylus.

I'd play if I had the game you guys chose, but I don't have any of the ones mentioned so far, I think.

Was grinding actually helpful? In P3 & 4 I always found it better to fuse higher level demons than to level up the ones I already had.
