RPG Thread V is really...grindy
Yeah, the PSP game was an SRPG. I'm actually looking at it on eBay right now. I didn't have a PSP when it first came out.

Wild ARMs is one of my favorite RPG series. For rating, I'd probably go something like 1>4>5>3>2, but it's all really close.
Apart from XF, the original and 2, I'd rate them as 4>5>ACF>3. And WF is one of my favourite as well.
I will say I love the dungeon puzzles. I wish more RPGs would do this today.
Yeah, unfortunately dungeon puzzles seem to be a thing of the past. Which is quite a shame because when they are done well, they really shine.

What are some of your fav RPGs because of the dungeon puzzles?

I know I'm beating a dead bush but in recent memory WA5 had some of the best puzzles ever. They even turned off random encounters while you were in a puzzle room so not to distract you. I was actually stumped on a few and had to use my trusty guide. Besides that I can't recall any besides the Zelda series.

While not exactly an "RPG" in the strictest sense of the word the PS1 game Alundra has some really great puzzles... and at the same time some that I thought were just insanely confusing, haha. That game also had a great story too.

I don't think that I've played any RPG from this gen with any good dungeon puzzles, which is sad. I'm glad a lot of RPGs are getting away from the block puzzles tho. Those are totally unimaginative.

As much crap as Xenosaga Ep 2 gets for being the worst of the trilogy, it did have some of the best dungeon puzzles I've played in a long time. The first Baten Kaitos had some frustrating dungeon puzzles if I remember. The puzzles in Skies of Arcadia were fun, and I also fondly remember some of the puzzles in Tales of Symphonia. For being as popular as it is, the Final Fantasy series is very lacking in puzzles.

I really like the dungeon puzzles in Wild ARMs 3 and 4. I really can't think of many other good ones.

Rodimus, the dungeons in WA 4 are best when you're freezing time and platforming. It felt like what the Xenogears team was going for when they did the whole platforming dungeon thing. I'm definitely picking up WA 5 thanks to this thread.

Yeah, Alundra was great... but I've never needed to resort to a FAQ for that type of game before so damned often! The puzzles are often highly illogical, and you rarely have a strong sense of where to go next. Still enjoyed it, but it really pushed the limits of my patience.

I looooooooved the dungeon puzzles in Tales of Symphonia. It's part of the reason why Tales of the Abyss was such a huge letdown for me. I really liked the sphere puzzles in FFX, too.

The puzzles in Tales of Legendia were pretty basic, what with their square rooms and block pushing, but got a little tough in the character quests, which I liked.

Don't know if this counts, but I've always loved the Mario & Luigi games for the ways in which the characters' abilities affect how they progress through the field.

For the most part, though, RPG dungeon puzzles tend to be simple, so they don't really stand out in my mind. I enjoy puzzle platformers (like Portal and the Klonoa series) a good deal, so that might have something to do with it.

How could I forget this, I just beat Superstar Saga a few weeks ago. The puzzles were fun, same with the entire Paper Mario series.

So instead of starting one of the Wild Arms games, I realized I had Odin Sphere in my backlog. So far I've played about 4 hours, and I love this game. The artwork is amazing and the battle system is fun. The only annoying thing at the moment is the lack of item space. I hope this story stays as interesting as it has been.

Note to self: Play Odin Sphere this summer.

Finally started Monster Hunter 3 over the weekend. Almost done with the 3 star quests. Great so far, though I can't wait to get to some bigger hunts. Seems a bit of a slower, more gradual start than on PSP, but still great. Hopefully my new apartment will have faster internet, cuz my Wii doesn't like to play online at home :(

I attempted to play Odin Sphere way back around the time it came out. Not that fun after awhile because it turns into going through the same areas and the same bosses over and over again, it seems.

I started Odin Sphere last night. Set it to "easy'. Still got beat by 'raging dragon belial' 3 or 4 times until I made it past him.

So, I'm about an hour or so into Wild ARMs XF and I'm really enjoying it. It has a very FFT vibe to it, with a class system and world map. The only thing that I'm a little sad about is that every class only has 4 attack skills from the beginning and never learn anymore apparently. Instead the classes learn passive abilities as the level up.

I couldn't get into Odin Sphere. I played about 4 hours and found it to be very boring. But I loved the graphics.

I'm about 8 hours into Wild ARMs 4. I said some negative things about it several posts back but I've warmed up to it. I found the strategy guide relativity cheap so I went ahead and ordered one. I see what you mean about the villians ChibiJosh. The rouges gallery looks like an interesting group.

I started up a game of Ys III a few months ago. I'll complete it someday since I beat Ys Book 1 & 2, and Ark of Napishtim. Like you I really didn't enjoy them when I was younger, but they seem more enjoyable as both the games and myself got older. They don't make these kind of games anymore, maybe that's why.

How long of a game is Ys III?

I think I beat it in 3 hours, but that was with emulator speedup.

I don't like busting out the SNES anymore... no speedup makes some things take way longer than they should -_-;

I'm playing the remake of Ys III (Oath in Feleghana PC version) and am at the final boss. The timer says about 13 hours. However that's with me taking my time, grinding, and getting everything. I'm not sure if that also includes game overs.
Anyone else picking up Hexy Force? Put in an order for it, I think it looks very interesting.
I want it, but I have so many things to play right now that I'm going to wait for a sale/price drop.

I'd like to, but I might wait for a price drop too, as Record of Agarest War will keep me busy for at least a couple of months.

Just went through White Knight Chronicles in 15 hours (some of those hours were spent idle). Overall... I was underwhelmed. Story was the simple "princess is in another castle" bit. The gameplay isn't all that great. My main gripes was that the fellow AI was stupid (cannot buff, debuff, do combos), melee attacks hit you from far away (no kiting), and the horrible monster variety. I swear there were like 5 monsters throughout the game not including the bosses. I am glad I waited to get it used. Definitely not a great RPG, very mediocre.

Though prior to this, I was having a blast with Sacred II (PS3). Game is glitchy online at times, but it seems like a solid Diablo/loot game.

I just can't get into Sacred 2. I've put about 2-3 hours into it so far, and its got me feeling underwhelmed. My major gripes are the tiny text, the inadequate camera, and the overall generic feeling.

I have to admit, the game looks cheap as hell and corny to boot. But there's something about the loot and huge map that's hooked me. I must have bad tastes in RPGs.

How is that, anyway? Besides the fanservicy bits, of course.

I've played it for like 3 hours and I'm just not feeling it. I might keep the pillowcase and mousepad and just put it up on 'teh bay.

Looking forward to playing Hexyz Force and Arc Rise Fantasia.

I'll have to look into it, as I too tend to like the RPGs nobody else does

Does this mean you like Unlimited Saga?

About 10 hours in Tales of Destiny 2 (PS2). Kind of strange to play a tales games with only 6 playable character. Even the original has 9 (+1 with gameshark)

Not all that strange. Phantasia & Abyss only had 6 playable characters.

With that said I didn't know you could use Chat or Max until I was near the end of the game.

Nevermind I'm an idiot. The 13:XX was the computer time...I thought something was fishy.

Finished FFXIII on the PS3,I was hoping to get all the trophies on it for this console, but I just don't think I have the time to deciate to that again. I already have 1000/1000 on my Live account. Now I can finally start Resonance of Fate.

EDIT: I managed to get Hexyz Force for $22 using Gamestop codes, so hopefully it's worth a shot.

What is Hexyz Force about? I have been taking a slight break from RPGs. I recently beat Assassins Creed 2. I might be going to play the last part of Dragon Age and possibly start replaying Mass Effect. I was wondering to anyone: Is Final Fantasy 1 really that good. I was playing the Sony PSP version and it is better in graphics than the nintendo version. I am wondering how can people possibly play through that. I guess I can also talk about how Zelda 1 was pretty awful looking too. I did beat it and somehow through some miracle in the last part of Zelda 2 I beat it too.

So for Odin Sphere, I would recommend easy if you just want to enjoy the story. That is the way I am going. Or go for the hard difficulty for an actual challenge. I found normal too slow to get through for the purposes of story enjoyment, but it definitely wasn't difficult enough for a challenging run.

Great news, hope we will see Ys Seven and a real The Legend of Heroes (the LoH we got are port made by Bandi)
I'm in for Legend of Heroes games. Even though they're generic, they're fun.

Looks like I'm in for Hexyz Force day one, I ebayed RoAW.

For anybody who's interested in Arc Rise Fantasia, GS has a pre-order bonus where you get an animation cell.

Yup, playing on easy. Really liking it so far. Interesting story (though a bit cliche so far) and the graphics are just gorgeous. I'm almost done with the first story. I think what I'll do, to avoid getting burned out, is to play a characters story, then play something else for a while, then come back. That way the repetition of areas/bosses shouldn't be as bad (I hope). Also, my anal retentiveness for inventory stinginess (the reason I can't play survival horror games too) is really taking a beating with this game, lol.

Sora no Kieski Trilogy is a bit different than the Garghov Trilogy (sp?) that was released here previously. Better game this time around hands down and easily worth a day one purchase unless they put them out at exorbitant prices.

Regardless, it's good to see the PSP getting some RPG titles that aren't just ports.

The inventory thing drives my crazy too. I am just about finished the second character story, and I spent most of my money on bags and an anti-flame charm.

So I'm at the last dungeon in Strange Journey. I'd really like to finish it by Wednesday, but SMT final dungeons have never taken any less than 8 hours, so this might be tough. To save myself some stress I might just buy some password demons for the last boss, because it looks like a real pain.

That's what I ended up doing. I bought the 2 demons that were listed in the FAQ on gamefaqs (they were both level 80 and one was Alice). I had another demon that I got from finishing a quest that was in the 90s (Seraph, I think), and he was only doing about 500 damage a turn while the other two level 80s were doing a couple thousand. Needless to say, the battle went pretty quick.

How long did it take you to grind up that high, levels and macca-wise?

Edit: 600,000 macca? Jesus Christ.

I ran around on the 2nd-to-last floor of the last dungeon for probably 4 hours to get up to around 70 to 80. As for the macca, you can sell some forma for a lot which is what I did.

I'm still on the fourth dungeon of Strange Journey. Haven't been playing it much recently, but I do need to jump back into it.
