RPG Thread XVII - Talk of RPGs past.
I don't know what it is, but when people do this I can never find it to be clever.
Wheres a Leda gif when you need one?
Finished the first 'dungeon' in Persona 2 IS. Pretty darn easy. Did they tone down the difficulty for the PSP version?
I should have picked this up when it was on sale, let me know how it goes! Just got FFIV on psp so that ought to hold me off for a bit.

Traveling a lot for work recently, so tried diving into some "classic" RPGs I never played.

Breath of Fire 3: I tried, I really did, to like it, but just couldn't. Soooooo slow and boring. BoF4 is a fave of mine, so I'm sad I can't enjoy 3. Stopped after ~ 10 hours

Grandia: Similar to the above. I find the graphics more charming, there's more plot/characterization, and the music is great, but it's just boring dungeon slog after boring dungeon slog. Also stopped after ~ 10 hours (enjoyed more than BoF3, but...). Also like BoF I greatly enjoyed Grandia 2 (3 was total crap though).

On to Parasite Eve! Hopefully this goes better...

I loved Grandia back in it's day, so I replayed it when it was first released as a PSone Classic. Slower than I remember and way too easy. Even bosses were a joke (I was over leveled) Still it was nice to play through it again, however it took almost 2 years to complete my second playthrough. I felt like I was forcing myself to play it half the time. Slow burn.

Agreed, Grandia 3 was garbage. It's only saving grace was the battle system. Sorely disapointed in the story.

Maybe it's just the main series SMT games that start out being difficult. I remember having trouble until I at least leveld up out of the single digits in Nocturne.

So maybe I forgot, but a 30 Seconds to Mars song plays during the credits of Dragon Age, and that's kind of weird.

Also, letting Loghain fuck Morrigan is also kind of weird.

I think I'm going to skip getting Etrian Odyssey 4 and Pandora's Tower (and probably Class of Heroes 2 if it's also too easy) because I just don't want to play easy games. Even Star Ocean 2 and Chrono Trigger and Tales of Graces F might ruin my patience like Xenoblade did, and there are probably some hard indie games that would be just fine anyway.

Or maybe games like Legend of Grimrock and Elminage Original spoiled me XD.

Also, is it bad when the newer Tomb Raider games interest you far more than newer Zeldas?

Not really playing any RPGs right now (unless 10000000 counts-- it's fantastic, BTW), so sorry I haven't been here much lately :p

wat.

You know, just because EO4 has a separate "casual" difficulty mode doesn't mean the normal one is any easier...

I preordered my own copy yesterday, but still don't know what type of 3DS I'll get. I'm leaning towards the XL, but am worried that EO4's 2D art will look like ass on it.

Since when is any Etrian Odyysey game easy?

I remember playing Breath of Fire 3 like what, 15 years ago? Couldn't beat the final boss.

I know about the casual mode. It's just that I've constantly read that the normal mode is the easiest in the series. Granted, it didn't sound like there was anything
like Torpor or Immunize or Warrior's Might
, but I was not at all impressed with hearing things like "random encounters are easy".

It could also be that everyone was using one of two classes and unlike EO3 it didn't take as long to figure out what really worked...IDK.

Sadly, I don't know which 3DS it would look better on and I can't seem to find any information on it for you.

Huh? Have you never played EO, or CoH?

2D art? The map?
Huh? Have you never played EO, or CoH?
Yes, and EO1 and EO3's difficulty are considerably different...mechanics aside. This is assuming that you consider use of the skill guide "map" on the net as NOT cheating though.

BTW, I misread the 2D art part - totally my bad. I'll edit the above post, but I still don't know either way.
The character art, specifically. I'm not too worried about the map.
There's very little character art. Most of it is monsters, rendered in 3D.

That is cheating, lol. I never used the maps for EO1-3 until I go back through and make sure I missed nothing.

Plus, other than EO1, none of them have been that hard. I think people just got used to what to expect. Like most games, they're only hard until you know what you're doing.

I used the wrong word earlier, again totally my bad.

It's the skill simulator that was wonderfully created for EO3 and EO4 that shows you the effect and cost of each move. I only use maps like you do elessar123 (and in EO2 especially I sure did miss stuff all right LOL).

I found many parts of EO2 needed good bit of thought and I agree about EO1 even though you-know-what ruined it after the 2nd stratum, but EO3 seemed to have very few puzzles or tough fights at all in comparison.

If I can play a somewhat decent party in EO4 without it being a cakewalk, I will get it no questions asked. I just have doubts.

didn't even have a remote interest in Tomb Raider until the reboot was revealed, which i'm thinking of grabbing day 1. the new direction looks great and maybe Lara will be an actual human being this time round.

I know the monsters are 3D this time, but it looks like character art is still used in at least the battle menus and cutscenes. I really love the character art, which is why I want it to look good :p

Ah, gotcha.

The problem with the Etrian Odyssey games is that they're only difficult if you havent maxed out that certain skill set that gives you an overwhelming advantage.

If you put all your skill points into something useless in combat (like, say the Farmer class) or worse, spread your points out evenly ( I've got 3 points in Fire, Air, and Water slash!) you're doomed.

You hit it right on the head. In EO1, I did just that -_-. In EO2, I had access to high damage moves late (Gunner then Ronin very late) but had nothing worse than that and it was mostly fun. In EO3 I used a Farmer in the main and they weren't this "awful" character everybody made them to be and I was still doing well.

If I have to make my party worse than that to have fun with EO4 then I don't know how fun that will be.

Farmers are usefull as your spare party for gathering resources, but I couldn't imagine doing a whole dungeon with them. Or those wildings/beast summoners.

I got to the "true" end boss of EO3 and couldnt beat him, mainly because you're really only supposed to be able to tackle him no your second playthrough.
You know, just because EO4 has a separate "casual" difficulty mode doesn't mean the normal one is any easier...
I'm actually kind of interested in the casual difficulty, I mean I've struggled through a decent amount of the Etrian Odyssey games and I usually really enjoy the part I play but I always seem to reach this point where they introduce something about them that just becomes really annoying to me so I decide to put them down and never finish them. I remember it happened in EO2 when you start getting to the floors filled with trap squares everywhere and having to either walk through them or bring along a more useless character to help disarm them. Also some of the quests in EO2 were really annoying like stay on a floor for a really long time, haha. EO3 did seem a fair ways easier and but I think I just got a bit tired with the game, but I might look into picking that one back up at some point.

Well... Parasite Eve sure as fuck was short, haha. Not bad, cool to play something a bit different. Honestly if it lasted any longer I'd probably have given up (terrible level design and tiny "hit boxes" for clicking to investigate/open things).

Is BoF3's desert worse than BoF4's? Cuz if so, fuck that noise so hard...

In more important news: Project X Zone coming to the US!!!!! So fucking HYPE!

I'm glad they included a casual difficulty, myself, even though I won't use it. The game's challenge aside, Etrian Odyssey is a really great franchise that I'd love for more people to get into :)

As for Project X Zone, glad it's coming out here; looking forward to it!

Which one are we talking about here?

fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuI need to get a 3DS
Which one are we talking about here?
First one. Will prolly pick up 2 eventually (though I hear it's not really an "RPG", not that 1 was too much RPG honestly). I think my final time clocked around 5.5-6 hours (and I have no interest in the NG+ or whatever, I'll just youtube the alternate ending eventually).

@eldergamer - Even though I was using one as a main, I did get through a first playthrough only with it. I want to give another party a spin and then I will tackle the postgame and such.

Don't get me wrong or anything - I'm not complaining about casual mode at all. I do think it's a good idea and I want each game to get better for everyone. I'm just used to getting my butt kicked? :D

Still, I think after a few posts here if I could have used the Best Buy coupon earlier today I would have pre-ordered it...so I guess I'm in (just like I will be for Project X Zone).

(and I just couldn't force myself to stay in B4F for three days)

EDIT: no...maybe it was 8...my goodness I can't remember.

There are way too many RPGs being released on the 3DS this year. That's awesome though. I'm glad they were able to bring over PxZ. Didn't it sell poorly in Japan? Maybe I'm thinking of another game.

Yeah, and my regular DS backlog's still enormous ;_;

At least I'm almost done with the PS2 backlog, though-- only four left! However, they're all RPGs, and I know at least one of them's going to be a huge time sink (Persona 4).

Wow, so right now on my to get list is

Ni No Kuni (Shipped from GS.com)
Etrian Odyssey IV (preordered)
Pandora's Tower (preordered)
Shin Megami Tensei Soul Hackers (preordered)
Project X Zone (Waiting on Amazon for preorder)

and maybe Fire Emblem. This is the first year I can think of where my JRPG list (that's not even including the new Castlevania 3DS or Suda game) is bigger than my Western list of games I want (GTA V, Sim City and Bioshock Infinite).

P4G is pretty boss status. I can see why you wouldn't want one though (Vita).

Just make sure you get to that game though. You must. ~_o

Finally wrapped up my first PT of Torchlight II. The game is such a blast to play. Looking forward to starting New Game +. I couldn't have done it without fire glaives and my trusty badger.

god damn siegmeyer walked in front of me as I was trying to kill a chaos eater now he's dead and his cunt daughter won't give me a titanite slab to upgrade my lightning washing pole

Been wanting to play Tales of Graces f again recently. Beat it twice when it first came out, platinumed it, and sold it. I still have a sealed copy, but I don't want to open it...

Then again, Ni no Kuni, Fire Emblem, and Etrian Odyssey will keep me busy for months.

Played P3 last year and loved it (well, except for The Answer), so yeah, P4 is definitely on the agenda for sometime this year.

OMG, someone in this thread has beaten Torchlight II besides me! What class did you play? I went with a male Engineer, since it seemed closest to my favorite class from the first game (Destroyer) + dat monocle. That said, naturally I had to pick the bulldog as my pet :p

Hmm, I beat it months ago, and started NG++ before stopping. =P
