RPG Thread XVII - Talk of RPGs past.

So hey, Fortune Summoners is half-off at Steam as part of the Holiday Sale. One of the best JRPGs I've played all year. Y'all should buy it.

Also, thinking of starting SMT: Devil Survivor while I'm away for the holidays. Not very Christmassy, but that's okay

Nah Xenoblade is the best jrpg by far. I liked it even better than Skyrim in fact, and I played it about the same to completion and in about the same amount of hours too, something I rarely do.
Skyrim isn't a JRPG.

Nothing you say makes sense.
I'm saying I liked a jrpg so much I enjoyed it more than a wrpg (which are arguably better imo)

So yeah, it makes perfect sense.

No but seriously, I keep reading more about "Black Isle" and the state of Interplay and all this just seems like a just fuck you. To me. The Crotch.

What about Lucas? How does he feel?
You're taking me down a rabbit hole full of contradictions and non sequiturs.

I cannot say that I am enjoying the trip.
I think you must be trolling me to say something actually stupid because I am confounded as to what game you think is better than xenoblade.

Every single thing that xenoblade set out and did is literally more fun than past games.

Better characters, making backtracking not a chore, fast travel, real time combat, combo systems w/r/t other party members, a queue system are all mechanically better than pretty much 99% of jrpgs out there, and frankly quite a few wrpgs.

Aesthetically and setting wise, with how much it pushes the wii hardware are also all things that it excells in for a game released in 2010 on aging wii hardware. Emulated on a PC, it looks stunning. Sure it's not ff13 or killzone 3 in terms of graphics, but the wii couldn't play either of those so that line of arguement is moot.

The only thing I'd dock it on is being too tropy w/r/t women and too anime or predictable in places, and the sidequests needing more variety in the mechanics other than the actual story of the sidequests. That being said, the sidequests and story tropes are pretty much on equal footing with quite a lot of jrpgs out there.

In the end, because of everything it does it simply stands out as the cream of the crop of (j)rpgs pretty much since the first "rpg" released for digital media. There's some areas it can improve on, but it'd be nitpicking past what I've already mentioned. It'd be like complaining your cake only has 1 cherry on it, instead of 3.

I gave!

Also, I adored Xenoblade. Easily the best "JRPG" I've played in a loooong time (off the top of my head since Lost Odyssey, not counting older games I've only played for the first time recently).

Can't believe it's been 2 years since it came out and hardly any jRPGs have come to consoles since (Tales of Graces F, Last Story (blech) and FFXIII-2 off the top of my head, though tons of great portables)
you should get the second opinion from crotch first, just how things work here
no i will not play PST yet

also i will destroy him at brood war
no i will not play PST yet
But what will you do if a wizened old crone approaches you on the street and demands to know what can change the nature of a man?

Srsly though, while I'm not a fan of the Tales franchise, Xenoblade is legitimately really good. The all-English voicework is charming, combat is solid (though it would really benefit from a simple pause and the ability to switch characters on the fly), and most of the sidequests aren't terrible.
also i will destroy him at brood war
Truth.

Finally caved in and bought Dragon's Dogma. Not that I didn't want it but Capcom would not drop it in price. Got it $23 used at GS.com with PUR, Cag16 and Saver.

Also preordered Etrian Odyssey IV and SMT Soul Hackers.

You know what's good? Dragon's Dogma.

Well, maybe it's not. I don't know. I probably like it waaaaaaaaay more than I should.

GOTY.
I literally have not played a Tales game since Symphonia.
Tales of Graces F is pretty good but what always ticks me off about tales games is the item limit. 15 items? uh. Buy a dlc item to raise it to a shocking 30??? items? *sigh*

Soul Hackers is making me want a 3DS. Bad. With SMT IV, Soul Hackers, Etrian Odyssey, and Fire Emblem being released next year, I might just have to pick one up. At least they finally have a purple 3DS, so I don't have to be stuck getting a dull colored one.

Completed The World Ends With You. I'm not sure how I should feel about it. I want to say I liked it a lot, but the ending seemed to just cut off? I haven't bothered collecting the necessary reports for the secret ending, so maybe that's what I'm missing. The final boss fights were pretty difficult, but fun.

Tales of Symphony was the shit.

time to buy graces F and xenoblade after work...
parking lot too full

i just went home

So 2 Worlds 2 has a Geralt sounding protagonist (default character even looks like him) and a similar attitude. It has textures that continuously pop in and out during cutscenes some of which are beautifully well done slow motion action cutscenes with fantastic writing and vocal delivery. There's a part where two characters pause in the middle of their sentences like they're putting on their sunglasses and are about to deliver a punchline for no reason.

There's a jump button that works all the time and a running animation that puts ME3's to shame. The menus are well layed out and do not allow you to use the d-pad to navigate them cuz that's why you have a analog stick. The combat itself is super solid and every hit feels very loose and randomly thrown as you pull down the R2 button/trigger? to unleash them.

Did I already mention the great writing? The prologue involves you having to escape a prison, a breath of fresh air compared to other games, and the person leading you out tells you that the only escape is through a portal in the throne room. When that plan fails, she informs you that there is actually another portal in more less conspicuous room in the dungeons (where you started). This is plan b. Did I mention that the girl helping you is an attractive orc? Cuz female orcs are attractive apparently.

Anyways, this game is fuckin great and everybody should buy it.

Final boss was tough as balls imho. I don't know that it's worth collecting all the reports just to see the bonus ending stuff, but it's definitely worth reading/watching the reports and the extra day. It explains a lot. fucking love that game...
TWEWY was the shit. Soundtrack is amazing.
This.
So 2 Worlds 2... Anyways, this game is fuckin great and everybody should buy it.
This game is simultaneously terrible and amazing. Reminds me I stopped playing. Gotta get back to it one day. I really think these guys could do great things with a bigger budget.

I might be the only person in the world that thinks TWEWY's soundtrack is hot garbage. It's what made me have to play the game with the sound off. At least the battle system pretty interesting.

The combat in TWEWY just felt like "scribble as fast as you can". Game was fun, though and a refreshing change.

I think the prologue was all I played of Two Worlds when I rented it from gamefly. I did purchase it last night. Might not get around to it for a while. Currently working on Saints Row 2. (Instant Game Collection!)

Didn't claim it was. Just is what I'm currently playing.

-On Topic Currently Playing-
Yggadra Union on the :psp: at battlefield 35 or 36. Only about 10 or so left.
Nah Xenoblade is the best jrpg by far.
I haven't played Xenoblade, so it's literally impossible for it to be "one of the best JRPGs I've played all year"

Anyway, Fortune Summoners is great and totally worth picking up.
Also preordered Etrian Odyssey IV
I need to do that, and get a 3DS while I'm at it...

You're further than me. I stopped around 20ish.

Speaking of Two Worlds 2, the GotY edition is on sale for $10 on PSN, $5 for PS Plus members. Yes the disk version is just as cheap, but MSRP of the expansion is $30 and that's free with this version.

Edit: You also get that $3 MP DLC for free with purchase of the Velvet Edition.

It's not just scribbling, you should have seen the strange looks I got back in college from my roommates when I was blowing, yelling, scribbling, and tapping the hell out of my DS. The blowing especially, at times it looked like I was trying to give my DS CPR.

Played the game almost exclusively on the train. Let's just say I usually had plenty room around me to stretch... lol.

started fortune summoners because of blueshinra's recommendation, had the game sitting on steam because i bought it in the last steam summer sale.

it's decent... the cuteness overload is a little too much though.

the cuteness overload goes away though when sana keeps dying when i need her to go through water areas. fuck.

maybe tonight when i go to gamestop the parking lot won't be full and i can get xenoblade and graces f.

So gog.com has a big-ass D&D bundle (Neverwinter Nights, Planescape, Baldur's Gate, Temple of Elemental Evil, etc.) going on for the next 20 hours or so.

Great savings can change the nature of a man.

Dammit, no NWN2. Lost my copy (with both expansions) in a move. Never got around to playing the expansions either... Mayhaps time for a D&D nostalgia trip though with BG+mods, NWN, NWN2...

Started Breath of Fire 3 on PSP... Very meh so far. Really love BOF4, so I'm trying to stick with it...
