people getting all emotional. you not answering the phone means you are not doing your job and being rude to someone because it bothers you that people would call to ask if you are going to class is not the way to go about it. I've called a few times to hasting's to ask if there are more sales on games or if it's still 20% and I ask politely and they tell me in a nice manner their answer. so why is it that gc employees should be any different or special? just let it be already and move on. I don't get employees at hasting's being rude, disrespectful or anything negative to me because the store is closing. It's a job, not a career and it is not the end of the world. Wake up to the real world and look at how the U.S. economy and all is affecting everyone. Don't get so touchy on a subject, it's just a matter of having the right to say and do as you please. I sure as hell am not going to drive 20 minutes to hasting's or gamecrazy just to find out if they're going to close or not. I can just call and that is what I do. I'm being smart and saving time+gas. Looking forward to the sales now..

Okay, since I'm pretty sure this is directed at me, I'm sorry if I was getting "emotional." I know some great guys at Game Crazy, and it would be a HORRIBLE shame for them to lose their jobs- but that's not what I'm emphasizing the calling issue so much for. Of course not answering the phone is impolite, and if you work at a store, you wouldn't be doing part of your job if you never picked up your phone. I'm sorry if I made it sound like I was condoning rudeness. Being able to call is your right, and if gas money is that important to you, by all means, don't let me stop you.

Just think a bit about this, though, guys- GC employees are going to have their phone ringing off the hook, and they're going to have to constantly remind customers all day long every day that they won't have their job much longer. I'm not talking about store closings at this point. By tomorrow, or Saturday at the latest, there will most likely be a master list of all the closing GC stores in the U.S. Use that to find out if your store is closing or not, and go in if you want to get in on some deals.

Bottom line, the point I'm trying to make is be polite. I'm not asking because I feel like Game Crazy employees deserve special treatment or anything like that. Just keep in mind that they're people, too, and the way today's economy is, this kind of thing could happen to many of us. And if that day were to come, would you want people calling all day getting excited for 10% off while you were days away from losing your job? I don't think so.
 
I was just speaking in general to all and to the guy who stated "no one cares.", then why are there so many responses? Think about it. I agree that if they do call and ask over the phone, be polite and all but there's always 2 sides to every story. Not everyone lives down the street from gc or has one within a 5 minute distance to drive to. Everything varies. But to be honest, not all employees deserve to be treated wrong and just because corporate sucks doesn't mean they should take it out on customers or anyone else. You know what you are getting yourself into when you take a job and if after awhile you know how corporate is and how they treat people and you stay that is your choice no one is forced in. Also, my local gc closed and they deserved it honestly for being dicks and not caring about customer service or anything else really. Now they're all working together again @ a gs not far from me because their old manager got hired there and he rehired them and guess what? I'm staying away from that store as it is my choice. It just sucks that some good employees have to go through crap I agree but some don't deserve to be working in another game store again and if a store is closing then there is a reason behind it and i'm guessing that is mainly due to sales and the economy. Be polite and patient people..

Just to note, Gamecrazy credit is good for standalone Hollywood Videos as well, so if you still have any standalone HMVs or Movie Galleries nearby, GC credit should be valid there. The game selection isn't as great, but it's something.

Scorch, do you know if these clearance sales tend to have a bad game selection at the beginning of the sale? I'm not looking for brand new titles or anything, but stuff like greatest or platinum hits that are in new condition for decent prices.

I completely agree that being human works on both sides of the coin. The economy is going to take out far more then a few GC stores before it's all over.

Sucks that you can't go to the GS anymore. But at least you have alternatives. If my GC closes, it's Wal-Mart or Fred-Meyer or a 20 mile drive to Best Buy.

Quit or got an early retirement Scorch? If he out and out quit, that's really bad - like Gamecrazy may cease to exist bad. If they offered him a severance of some sort, that may not be as catastrophic.
 
Just did some research. Apparently the first motion hearing on the filed bankruptcy is today at 2:00 p.m. 805 stores are planned to be closed.
 
If you look on the HMV store locator, it will tell you which HMV stores (and thus Game Crazy stores) near you are closing.

Thanks, I think, for the info.

While there are no longer any GC's anywhere near me, I saw that my local HWC and the one near my work are closing. That really sucks for getting any more game deals. I'm not going to travel a half hour just to see if a store has any deals. I did notice that the closing stores were all HWV's and not the few Movie Gallery's scattered around here.

Only one (Buffalo & Lake Mead) out of the three remaining I see will stay open here in Vegas.
 
Well, of the 16 HWV closest to me (all within 22 miles), just 5 are closing. Unfortunately, one of them is my local store - just 1/2 mile from my house. Another one is one of the better ones from the last $4.99 sale. I don't think any of them are Gamecrazy stores though.
 
According to the store locator, there is a HWV(stand alone) and a MG that are closing that are not too far away.. The HWV that has a GameCrazy attached is not closing according to it..
 
Hmmm, my Gamecrazy (stand alone) doesn't show up on the HWV store locator. It shows up on the Gamecrazy site, but not the HWV. Also, my last of 3 HWV's is now closing.
 
All the HMV and GC stores near me are closing (4 in total). There are still a few scattered around, but the nearest one will be about 10 miles away now rather than just 2 miles away.

I really preferred GC to GS, since they had cheaper (IMO) used games and better trade in values. Now it's going to be tough. (There are like 2 Gamestops 5 minutes from away -.-)

Sad to see more people losing their jobs. The way Scorch is describing it, though, it sounds like those that are staying open are merely a casualty to occur in the future (instead of now).

And that's exactly the way it feels. They posted this little Chapter 11 FAQ on our intranet today, and I read through the wording for the ones dedicated to stores not closing, and it told managers to say to their employees, "Our store was not one of the ones effected, but there will be more closings to come at a later date".

I don't think this clearance sale will last long. They literally took almost every single used 360, PS3 and Wii game that we had, but they left a lot of new ones. It's weird. They even took every copy of shit that's bottom of the barrel like Beowulf.

Any word on the closure list that was being put together by corporate?

I'm sure you've already seen it, but the store closings are now on the site. Just search for your local store and it'll say "Store closing - savings storewide" or something to that effect.

Oh - there has been NO communication on any clearance %. Early paperwork suggested that clearance sales begin tomorrow, there was a note that stuff needed to get shipped out TONIGHT.. but nothing further.

There are a few deals to be had, if you get there early, but nothing special. They left a lot of new copies of older 360 games. Lots of Wii games, but nothing first party.
 
It looks like the only Game Crazy remotely close to me is staying open according to the store locator. It'll be nice too, since it's not far @ all from where my new job will be. If they have better TIV & deals than GS, then I'll be more than glad to give them my business.
 
Wow, there are only 3 standalone GameCrazy's in all of LA County, and about a dozen total for all of Southern California. It doesn't specify if any of them are closing or not.

It looks like the only one anywhere near LA proper already shut down - that was the ghetto one by the Crenshaw Plaza. Hmmm, I wonder if this location just got locked out of the store by the landlord, because one of the Hollywood Video locations, they told me last week they were NOT closing, and I went by there a couple of days ago in the early afternoon and the lights were off but it looked like stuff was still in the store. And that HWV location doesn't even show up in the HWV store locator at all.

I think the landlord changed the locks or chained the doors shut on that one, LOL. And in some of these neighborhoods, that is just asking for a brick to go through the window/glass door and the place to get looted.

Last year, Circuit City was being liquidated about this time, now GameCrazy/Hollywood Video.
 
Will the remaining stores be around long enough to get to the Splintercell date? Or should I just cash out now? My store's not closing, but I am worried.
 
Absolutely unbelivable.. all HWV's are being closed in San Diego. The only one being about 30mins East of Downtown San Diego.

This is really a shame. End of an era. Good luck to all those affected.
 
My local store (that is closing) is not a GC location, but the story I got today from the shift manager working there (and he told me all this on his own - I didn't even ask about it) is this:

They have a 4 week "rental" period which means they continue to rent as usual. Then another 4 weeks of clearance with no more rentals and then they shut down. The store still looked like it always has. This is a "budget" Gamezone location and they still had the same games for sale as before - so it doesn't appear that they have shipped anything off yet, though I suppose that may change shortly.
 
Closest ones to me are staying open (for now) but there are a few I can get to that are closing. I will probably check out the Bridgewater, NJ one which is toast. (edit: evidently Bridgewater is only Hollywood Video and it does not appear any Game Crazy near NYC is closing.)

My condolences to any board members losing their jobs, but you will get something better soon enough.

been eyeing the hwv near me since thier gc closed...been telling me they werent closing...called today and guess what...they are now in my cross hairs...will someone post if they find out how Hollywood video runs there liquation sells and how much the clearance will be.
 
A friend of mine called the other day and told me that she would pass any information of the liquidation on to me. Hopefully her boss doesn't can her before any of that is able to happen.

no pre-order bonus for Bioshock 2 or what? I just called my local gc and the guy said they have nothing yet until it arrives and that they won't do any trade in promotions until the day that the game is released.
 
I went to my GC and they still have a good amount of games, but on the counter was a list, I peeked at it when the dude answered a phone call and had to check something in the back, and it seemed to be an order to ship back games but to not send them if it'd leave onhands at 0. So I'm really not sure if they're closing. Any ideas when a list might get released?

I was going to pick up NHM2 to burn some of my credit but they didn't even get any in. The clerk said no one pre-ordered it, so they didn't send any at all! Amazing.

Thanks Ray2dee, but I called and they said they didn't have it. Neither did Blockbuster, Wallmart, Target, TRU, or Stop & Shop (mine has movies). It was the 10th one subtitled The Great Longneck Migration. I broke down and ordered it used from Amazon. Like I said, I appreciate your offer though. My son has been following me around the house for 3 days tormenting me to get it for him (it's in the previews of one of his other LBT movies).

..that's generally how it works. What did you think pre-ordering did? The company's not going to order copies for every store if it looks like certain stores have customers with no interest in the title.

The 20% off is scheduled to run through the end of the 28th, but we'll see if it goes up or not.

By the way, whoever hired an outside company to come in and tell us how to liquidate our own product is a dumbass. It's a useless waste of money (one of the many) and it's stupid decisions such as these that brought us to this situation.
