SOCOM: Confrontation *General Discussion Thread*

FYI....when you have a weapon silenced and you come around a corner and pull the trigger you don't hear gun fire...you hear the sound of human flesh being penetrated...that is the best fucking sound ever in any game ive ever played
How does 10:30pm EST work for everyone Sunday Night?
I will be there.

It turns out I had an outstanding invite to "smiggity" and already had smogitup as a friend. :dunce:

Damn...it's like the game doesn't want me to play, I just installed the data and when I try to download the update (1.10), it either stays on "Please Wait" without even downloading, followed by :

An error occurred during download operation.
(80710723)

OR

It get's into the percentile bar, but doesn't load and after 2 minutes gives me the same error message as before. I did notice though that right before I try to download it, it randomly signs me out, but I doubt that has to do with anything.

Thanks in advance, guys

the server is down for some reason .makes me wish even more there were some single player missions. hopefully in a dlc

Here we go....

I have 0 PS3 games, and no PS3 headsets so this looks like a great chance to get a very good ps3 headset for next to nothing. My question is this, does Socom have a rank/level up system? Because I dont see a single review and the game is already out

Yes it does. Alright 10:30 tonight!!! I will get Starkkat to update thread title.

And who in the hell has Smiggity as a PSN name? Thats weird, considering it is a word I made up.

It is probably because their servers are down

Yes it has an extensive ranking up system, but you need the guide to see the requirements.

The server was up around 130-2am EST last night. I will give this game some more time, I know that they rushed the game out, but because the game is online it at least gives them the chance to eventually fix the wrongs of this rushed release, and I hope they will do it.

I had some problems with SOCOM this morning. Lots of lag and two hard freezes. I then quit to play Resistance 2. Later I saw that SmogItUp was playing SOCOM (got a message) so I left Resistance 2 to try SOCOM out again. I accepted the clan invitation but then could not find how to join the game SmogItUp was in. Any one know how to find and then join a game of a friend?

I played a little bit of this yesterday, and it has the potential to be one of my favorite online games behind Warhawk and Burnout Paradise. Though I did kept getting killed alot, I wasn't exactly terrible, especially since I'm not familiar with most of the controls yet. Haven't experienced any freezing yet, though.

I'm going to wait until trophies are released so that I can start this game fresh, I guess.

i am seriously thinking about trading this in.....pretty pissed about the lagging and overall quality..i was playing and my wife walked in and was like "call of duty looks WAY better than this"

I used to have this problem when downloading any update on my PS3 (why I didn't play PAIN for like 3 months) and from research in the official playstation forums found the source of my problem was with the Media Server connection. The system apparently tries to reauthenticate and hoses your net connection so I just disabled it. I can't browse videos/pictures/music on my PC anymore but at least I have not gotten disconnected since disabling that functionality. Hope this helps.

This is one of my biggest complaints about this game b/c there is no way to see what channel and game your friends are in but there is a menu in the game that goes so far as to show you they are in fact online in SOCOM. Me and the friends I've been playing with just send messages back and forth via the XMB to coordinate where to meet.

That is also my biggest gripe. Yeah I have been using the XMB method as well, but it seems after they updated the servers the other night the in-game invites work now.
While in the lobby of a room, go to your in game friend list. Click on the friend you would like to invite and an invite will be sent to their in game message box. The invitee will then check the message and then click Join Game and it will send you into the room. Very complicated but it works.

As it can some times be difficult logging on, I suggest people start a little earlier so that they are in the game and online. This way Smiggity can send the in game invites as he sees people (and possibly others in the lobby can help?).

Sounds like a plan. I am hoping we can just hijack one of the official rooms, but if not I will try to host. Anyone here have really good upload speeds?
Most likely the game will be in one of the Clan Game servers.

I haven't played SOCOM since PS2, so how is this going to work? Will this be strictly a CAG game, or are we gonna get random people in there? I hope we get enough to have a CAG only room. Loved it when it was all CAG in the R6V game nights.

I am hoping for 8 people so we can have a CAG only room. I was thinking some 4x4 medley or something. Any suggestions/requests?

If you guys need a fillibuster, I will play with you, just send me an invite and let me know you are from CAG. I should be on in a few minutes. Davestation is my name, I will join.

I will be sending out Invites through the game. Just check your in-game message box. I will also post the Server/Room here and can send a PSN message if anyone needs it.

Anyways I gotta study from now until 10 so Davestation I will add you as soon as I boot up.
Can I get a clan invite? My psn is filler2001
You finally get it? Hopefully I was of some help! I even stalked you on your blog!

im gonna try to get on but between the playoffs and my chick being over i might not dont mind her on the headset if i do get on

I'm gonna keep trying to get on guys. Anytime I open up the game invite, I get the following error: "An operation could not be completed because there was an error communicating with the server. Community features may not be available. Game rankings and statistics may not be recorded."

Ugh. So you're telling me, for an online only game I may not have access to the rest of the community. Bravo, Sony. Bravo. Oh, and your "friend list/invite" integration. Absolutely atrocious. So I get a fucking invite. I have to crawl out of that menu into another one to get to it. Yeah, that makes plenty of sense. What a cluster fuck this is.

Oh snap, I think I figured it out! After doing the ingame invite thing, join Clan Games 2 and just hit Join Game and it automatically puts you in the room you were invited to.

Those games were fun! :D
Hopefully a patch gets released soon to get all these problems fixed, because it's ridiculous how hard it is to join a game you've been invited to. :\

I enjoy Confrontation, but switching weapons is a giant pain the ass. I'm trying to select my frag grenade not my pistol, damn it. :bomb:

That was fun. They need to iron out invites though. Once you get an invite, it should take you straight to the lobby. Not all of this non-sense. And this error I kept getting was annoying, too. Once we get a bigger group of CAGs though, this should be lots of fun.

Good games, really enjoyed playing with you all! Reminds me of how much fun I had with the first two SOCOM games. I'm sure it'll definitely be great when we get more CAGs joining in.

I got kicked out to the XMB twice, hopefully they fix that soon. Didn't notice too many other bugs, but I'm sure they'll be working on them.

Chase I've found lately that hitting L1 auto switches you from primary weapon to grenades, or whatever you select on the wheel.

That was fun. Hopefully we can get more people on next time.

I found out what I was doing wrong. After Accepting the Game Invitation I kept getting an error (Community features may not be available. Game rankings and statistics may not be recorded.) so I thought it was not working. The one time I simply ignored this, and went directly to the "Briefing Room" after the error and I was then offered a choice to join a Lobby as the Game was in Progress. I said yes and was immediately in a Lobby with a bunch of CAGers. Surprised the hell out of me as I had not even selected a Channel (I certainly never joined a Clan Channel).

Any idea how this Hostage thing works? When my team was Mercs, none of us seemed to know what was going on and what our obectives were.

It would have been nice to be able to talk with you to coordinate what was going on in the game - wear your own headset next time you play with CAG members.

They were all grayed out. Anyway, it should automatically send you to the lobby when you accept an invite instead of having to jump back to the main menu.

I didn't get the hostage thing either. I only saw one the whole time and everytime I tried to go after one on the map as either Commandos or Mercs, they wouldn't show up.

And m_d_amore's gal was talking all sorts of shit. I found that hilarious.

Hey, it was really fun playing with you guys last night and hope to join you guys again in the future. I actually have been trying to play more than just the scheduled CAG nights so shoot me a message if you see me on SOCOM so we can play. I was having dreams of that one claymore kill I got at the bomb plant site. ;)

Also, next time we should play some bomb planting (I forget what it's called) and breach both with respawns (limited).
Chase I've found lately that hitting L1 auto switches you from primary weapon to grenades, or whatever you select on the wheel.
With respect to the L1 quick switch, I use this all the time in battle. Apparently there is still a bug with that because the 2nd weapon you equip when you hit L1 is pretty random at the start of the round. For instance, at the start of every round I'll hit L1 to check what it's set to and sometimes it's my grenades, sometimes my handgun, sometimes claymores, etc. So, it's probably a good idea to set your quick switch at the start of the round so you're not in for a surprise (basically, when you have your primary gun equiped use the circle button to select the other weapon you want selected with L1 and then you will have your primary and this 2nd weapon as the 2 L1 quick-swap options). Now, if it were smart and just remembered the last thing I had set it to in the previous round I'd be happy but it's never reliably the case. So, anyway many times I will set my 2nd weapon to the handgun in the cases when in a close combat gunfight and run out of bullets in my primary since pretty much all other cases don't require such a quick switch (i.e. grenades, RPG, claymores, etc.).
Any idea how this Hostage thing works? When my team was Mercs, none of us seemed to know what was going on and what our obectives were.

I didn't get the hostage thing either.
OK, if you are playing the Hostage game type where both teams start off away from the hostages then Marines need to try and capture the hostages and airlift them out via helicopter and Mercs need to keep the Marines from capturing them by hiding them or killing the Marines. Also, neither side is supposed to kill the hostages as I found out in the Beta or else you lose.

Then if you are playing the VIP extraction the VIPs look just like the hostages but the Marines start out with 3 VIPs at their spawn and they are supposed to airlift >=2 out or they lose. The Mercs either kill 2 or more VIPs or all of the Marines to win.

Yeah it was mad fun and actually I was surprised at the turnout, especially considering how gimped the game is still.

Yeah I was spectating that. I was wondering why you weren't shooting him then bang, shit blows up. Nice one.

Yeah I was just trying to get a feel for what everyone liked. There were definitely too many hostage/vip games. I will set up Demo and Breach with limited respawn next time.

My Mic was cutting out when we joined the 420 room because I was torrenting Entourage. My bad.

Thanks for showing up everyone it was good times.

So how does the claymore work? Is it like a mine, self detonating, or does a person detonate it manually? If it is manually - how do you detonate it and how far away can you be. I tried it once in the demo and just killed myself. :)

Unlike COD4 there is no proximity/self-detonation for claymores in SOCOM. You have to look down to plant them. It will be set to blast away from you the way you plant it. To detonate it you have to select the detonator from the weapon select window/wheel and it's that switch looking thing on the left-hand-side just below your grenades. Keep in mind that if you select the detonator immediately after setting your claymore and use the L1 quick weapon switch you'll end up holding a claymore instead of your gun.

Blog Update

Hello,

I wanted to keep everyone up to date on where we are and what we are doing.

The consumer response to SOCOM: Confrontation has been huge. We are consistently seeing almost 100,000 people log in everyday with peaks of 25,000 simultaneous users. On average, you are playing about 3.1 hours per person with a total of 300,000 player hours everyday. I would like to thank all of you for helping to make SOCOM: Confrontation such a great success.

As I'm sure many of you are aware, the launch has not gone without its share of problems. Unfortunately, the server environment is not holding up during peak loads. We've made many changes and improvements to the server to improve the issues (the first few days were really rocky) but we are still seeing server issues when we get up to around 25,000 simultaneous players during peak hours. Our primary focus at this time is to resolve these server issues. We have all available resources looking into the issues and we are trying to resolve them as quickly as possible. It is not as easy as adding more servers, we have to identify and fix the bottlenecks in the system which are preventing the servers from scaling properly. The servers should continue to get progressively better as we roll out server side updates.

As a reminder, our scheduled daily server maintenance is between 5am and 8am PDT (8am to 11am EDT). We bring the servers down during this time to roll out updates. The servers will usually only be down for about 20-30 minutes but some updates may take longer.

In parallel to the server updates, we are also working on a new client patch which resolves some client side stability issues. These issues include getting booted to the XMB, large number of players getting disconnected from a specific game and other issues. We've been working on and testing this since the game launched and we should have a final version ready for release in the next week or so. It is hard to provide an exact date or timeframe as we need to make sure the patch is thoroughly tested and does not introduce any new issues.

We are also working on a patch to enable trophies and address various user feedback but this will be after the stability patch. Our top priority is getting both the servers and client as stable as possible before making any changes which could possibly cause other issues. Please continue to provide feedback in the SOCOM: Confrontation PlayStation.com forum. We do read it and use the feedback to make further changes and tweaks in future updates.
