to backtrack... I feel creepy now... I know markman is older than me, but seeing how dedicated a Tekken player he is (and better than me, hands down) I feel awkward knowing I started learning high level play when Tekken 3 came out, way before Markman started... :( guess I'm slow

also, alot of people seem to forget Tekken has a counterattack/reversal system itself, but does nut dwell on it too much. DoA's only try at depth has been in the counterattack/reversal department of the series, but really they need to focus elswhere...

That's why I like the Tekken reversal system, you can counter the counters... :)

And VF was by far the hardest game for me to learn or even attempt to learn. I gave up pretty easily. It's definately fun though but lacks the competition. I threw a few SoCal VF tournies though and got to enjoy watchin some high level play, definately exciting.

And if anyone was at EVO2003 when all the Japanese players like Ohsu Akira, Chibita and them came along, that was madness!

Well, I just recently picked up VF4: Evo because it was only $8. I haven't gotten really into it, mostly because I don't know anyone that plays, but I also got it in preparation for VF5, which looks fantastic.

I find that there's a lot of memorization you have to do. In Tekken, you probably only have to memorize a handful of juggles per juggle starter, but in VF you have to take into account the weight class and stance and even counterhit properties. The other depth, I think, is how the speed of throws changes everything, but you also get to buffer throw escapes, and I like doing that =P

But I haven't gotten into the complex things yet, things like Sabaki, Nitaku, and all those other lovely strange Japanese terms, nor have I properly learned how to play against other characters.

However, there is a lot of stuff in VF that I think is misread by the general public, as the tutorial covers not only VF-specific elements but general 3D fighting lessons. Things like backdashing in frame disadvantage to bait whiffs. Things like taking advantage of frame advantage to pressure. Using moves with tracking to bait steppers... all of this is wonderfully addressed in VF's training mode and is directly applicable to almost any fighting game.

As for DoA: U... it is definitely less systematically deep than Tekken. You don't have to know frames, mostly, because you only have to distinguish between moves that are throw-punishable and those that aren't (and even worse, there are guaranteed throws on BLOCK). And on hit it doesn't really matter because of stun system. Sidestepping is only useful for positioning and not for evading attacks, something that all the other 3D fighters use. The ground game in DoA:U is painfully biased towards the attacker once he learns how to counter wakeup kicks on reaction. Poking in DoA:U is limited because there are very few moves that aren't string based. I don't want to debate the stun system but it adds a tad more randomness than what I'd like.

But those are only the limitations of the fighting system. Whether it is much deeper than that, I'm not sure. SF2 has a large following despite the simple system because people manage to wring more out of it even to this day. Even strange glitchy bugs like Roll Cancelling (CvS2) and Guard Breaking (MvC2) can increase the depth of the game.

Ah, but whatever, I've been talking too much... it's time to go and see the Tekken 5 doctor... for the fourth day in a row.
anyone reccomend me changing my avatar? I feel it's getting old...
nah, hell ive had mine since the first day i started here

I say the best way to play a fighter is to douse your friends in bacon juice, eat burnt hamster, and pour on the testosturone rage. From there on, you're on to a great start for a fighter :)
nah, hell ive had mine since the first day i started here
Me too. Just keep it, to much trouble to change it. But if ya gotta change it have Billy Kane in it, cause he's cool.

 will do :)

There's high level play of VF4 at my local campus, but I'm never around to be a part of it. I would love to watch it sometime though. I want to see some good Akira players since his moves are such a bitch to pull off.

(why the hell am I still up?... it's 3:30 am still... oh wait, I go to bed at 4:30 am...)

What do you guys think of the Street Fighter Anniversary Joystick by Nubytech? I have a few friends who are into Street Fighter and I'm trying to get some tournaments set up for us. Do you guys think the joystick will be good for tournament play/general play?

I'm mainly looking for a good solid joystick since I can not stand the controller s d-pad.

i haven't touched them because a long time ago i bought a nuby stick for xbox.

the buttons and stick felt REALLYYYYYYY GOOD. i came home..........OH it keeps pressing random buttons for no reason and glitches alot. i take it back for another, does the same. great!

MARKMAN:
yea those things are tizzight. i'm not sure if you go to evolution last year but neil "cigarbob" made a custom one that was used for money matches for super turbo. it works really well. lots of people want it but he refuses to make more.

Is it just me or does it seem like some fighting games completely change once you get to high-level play? I mean quality/fun-wise.

Ok, so which arcade stick would you guys reccommend to use when playing SF games? I don't really feel it is worth to pay $45 for a AC stick and then have to go through and mod it to make it better. It doesn't seem like a lot of people are impressed with it.

you can learn to make your own, but if you're not handy with tools like the majority of us.. you could always just buy one from a custom stick maker from shoryuken.com. if you hit up the hardware forums, there's some slick stickmakers there offering their services. i'm partial to dreadedfist's joysticks, but you can check out everyone elses.

btw.. having one made by a stickmaker is probably gonna cost no less than 90 after shipping.. the price usually builds depending on what hardware/materials you want used.

If you're not afraid to splurge a little, I'd recommend that you get a custom arcade stick. A great place for those is the Hardware forum at shoryuken.com. There are a tons of stickmakers there. I got mine done by Dreaded Fist.

Nevermind now, I just bought two refrubished sticks from nubytech on ebay for $90 shipped. So it comes to $45 shipped a piece. My friend and I went in on them. So I guess we are going to mod the stick since that looks like the cheapest/best way. I was mainly reading the about the downtalk on the controller pre mod, it seems to be pretty good once the mod is done.
Not sure if it was mentioned, but it fits here -

happier news would be mike haggar confirmed playable in street fighter 4

That's the first I have heard about that, sounds great. Hopefully this game ends up being good.
Anybody planning on getting this:
http://www.the-magicbox.com/0601/game060115e.shtml

I doubt it'll ever come out here, but I did play it while in Japan. Pretty fun. At least it's something new.

- Just got the greatest portable games ever, SNK vs Capcom MOTM and SNK vs Capcom Card Fighters for NGPC. I prefer these 2 games than anything out on both DS and PSP.
cosign on motm and cfc.. i think i play my ngpc more than i play the ds or psp

i've been drooling over spectral vs generation for quite a while now, but i've never gotten to play it.. i heard the break in nj has a machine, but i'm on the west coast.. how's the gameplay? i hear it's similar to guilty gear?

damn i seriously need to move to japan for my 2d fighting fix.. i'll switch my current major to english or something

I have a question. I was trying to figure out how much the parts were going to cost to do two joysticks and I'm not for sure which Happ push button wrench to get.

There are these two available.
http://www.happcontrols.com/pushbuttons/53800200.htm
http://www.happcontrols.com/pushbuttons/53800300.htm

I think the one in the first link is the one I need since I will be using competition buttons. I just want to make sure I'm getting the right one before I place an order.

*edit*

also, is it necessary to get the protective covers for the push buttons?

BTW, this is my first arcade stick and my first arcade stick mod(s).

Dunno about the wrench, but as far as I know push button covers are for filling button holes in the stick base that you're not using. I.E. if you modded an 8 button stick to just six button, you'd seal the other two holes w/ push button covers.

I am in the same boat, but I started when the NGPC was released here in the US for the first time. Both those games are THE reason to own the system, but the little handheld has some great other fighters as well. I was so hooked on MOTM for a year or so, and stil come back to it enjoying it as much. Personly it's my favorite 2d fighter to be released ever...

Now the one thing I was very happy about was the fact the Card Fighters Clash's sequal was comming out on the DS sometime... now that almost made me bust a nut (or whatever it's called) and light a squirl on fire...

The sequel to Card Fighters Clash is coming to the DS :D

Yea, I'm there every year, I help run the event :)

And I absolutely loved his cabinet. Very nice. I loved that he had US and JPN panels available! That was very innovative.

Which is better: The King of Fighters: Dream Match 1999 or The King Of Fighters '99 Evolution???

Also, is Vampire Chronicle for the DC worth getting?

dream match 99 = kof 98 with better music IIRC

99 evo= kof99 with extra strikers not available in the arcade version (vanessa and seth come to mind)

Yo markman, any word on the evo locaton for this year? I enjoyed Vegas but that put a huge dent in my wallet, $700 to be exact:cold: They should have in cali;)
The sequel to Card Fighters Clash is coming to the DS :D
So I've heard a couple months ago. Do you know if an American released has been confirmed?

BTW - KOF 98' > KOF 99'. Just cause it's got a bunch of diffrent charcters like Billy, Heavy D, and Orochi Yashiro. I never warmed up to the newer guys like K', and Ash. Just an opinion from a die hard KOF fan.

Agreed. The gameplay in '98 felt more polished, and I was never a big fan of the striker system.

However, I am a fan of some of the newer characters like Vanessa and Duo Lon (his '03 brokeness aside).
you guys are so lucky living in cali and getting evo there almost every year.
very hugely agree... evo needs to head to florida and get its freak on on all the latin chick down here... or something lower...

found an awsome old video.

The african/brit guy really puts what I think about the overall design of Tekken vs. Virtua Fighter when compared to each other... he's kinda funny too.

If you look around on ebay you might find a T5 stick cheap... Also EB/GameStop sells used T5 sticks for $49.99 if they have em in stock...

To be honest the T5 stick isn't 'damn good' but it's probably the best you can do for $49.99. Unless you find a sweet deal on a Namco stick or something.

Dude, comparing VF4 to Tekken 4? That's just unfair.

And I never knew the arcade version of VF4 was so clean compared to the home version.

I still think a lot of praise is heaped VF4 just because it is virtually impossible for a noob to beat a vet with button mashing, not just because of the gameplay itself. Even though the game is incredible, I still think the learning curve for the game is rather ridiculous.

The Street Fighter Anniversary stick is only 10 bucks more

I'm not that big a fan of the SF Anniversary stick either. Unless you change the stick/buttons with authentic parts. Easy to do though. :)

i still have to figure out if I want a stick like that or not... anyone have a good experience with the red octains? A freind of mine has a customized one that seems like it gets the job done.

and yes... the VF4 learningcurve is a little too damn high IMHO... at least they should simplify some parts of it such as ground recovery (one button instead of 3). You just have to think about alot more crap at one time than most other fighters...

As soon as Namco announces (if ever!) T5DR for PS2, I am officially their bitch.
